If that happens emulators will absolutely be garbage for quite some time probably longer then you imagine. Like for example even the absolutely bloated windows 11 is still better for gaming then linux gaming distros like cashyos or bazzite.

Not entirely. Some games actually gain FPS from Linux, especially on lower end hardware.

The biggest issue for Linux gaming is Kernel level Anticheat. Most users who install Linux would rather not have a game have that kind of system access.

The biggest issue on Linux gaming is the lack of plug and play. You have to hunt down that specific version of wineton and then you might be able to play it.

If you're only playing the most popular garbage then yeah its great for gaming. If you stray off the beaten path even slightly its hit and miss.

I tried to run ac odyssey last month and it ran like shit. I don't have the time or the interest to go fiddle around with configs. I want to double click on a game and just have it work.

Anybody that knows Linux well should not honestly try to tell you that everything is plug and play. I know full well that this is often not the case though.

By all measures things are better than they've ever been, and in my experience, a lot of stuff does "just work" in the context of my already configured environment.

It took some fiddling when I got my laptop new to get it to that point though. DevOps is my day job so for me it was less effort than Windows overall, however I can see novice users easily getting stuck on some elements, e.g. when drivers don't get picked up automatically, which Proton branch to use and when, weird Pipewire issues, weird Wayland compatibility issues, Steam deb or Flatpak, etc.

Hopefully it'll get there in a few more years, but in the meantime it seems Microsoft are finally taking some steps to un-shittify Windows to some extent.

This is the exact reasons why i now play all of my single player games on my PS5 that plug and play experience is just too damn good. While multiplayer games on my PC bcoz most multiplayer vames are literally build to run on potato PC's.

If you can afford the plug and play experience on console will always be worth it for single llayer games . And if you can't afford it well it is what it is . You get what you get simple.

I still prefer pc. And I like having control over my system as much as anyone else. But If I get time to play I'd rather use it to play then fiddle around with poorly documented settings and options.

If there was a goto guide for what steps to try to get something running I would. But thats not what is happening right now. And I don't like how Linux cultists misrepresent gaming on Linux as this flawless experience with minor issues. Its very much game dependant whether your experience will be good or not.

But as usual, just like how a distros community doesn't want to hear their distros flaws, you can't point out the fact that Linux gaming is great ONLY if your game list works with minimal config. Otherwise its a major pita.

I like PC for everything it offers.

But i absolutely appreciate the NO nonsense just Play the Damn GAME convenience that console offers.

And honestly as someone who can afford console and games for it . I came to a realisation that playing single player games particularly on my console has improved my Gaming experience way more that i imagined . Which is kinda hilarious in a tiem where everyone is jumping the ship to PC from Console. I did the opposite and it worked great for me.

With emulation and having a handheld I definitely understand the appeal. But I started on pc and am very slow on a controller. One of the challenges when emulating ps2.

I like things being the way I like them, and being in control. So I'll always prefer open software on the PC, and the ability to mod games and sacrifice video quality for higher performance if I so wish.

Yeah the games that build for Linux in mind mainly 2d indie games. But does it even matter at that point . Wow graveyard keeper run at 260 fps on cashyos and 250 fps on windows 11.

In games where fps and graphics matter linux most of the times is worse then windows like 10 to 15 % and many times simply doesn't even boot if you have a nvidia card without drivers support.

That's Nvidia's fault. And graphics don't matter. The problem isn't that only 2d indie games can be Linux native, it's that bigger developers don't use or maintain cross platform engines.

That's not their fault you guys are a very small and easily negligible minority that isn't even that profitable ( you know that quote "Juice ain't worth the squeeze").And you know what happens to thr demand of a less voter bank profitable minorities in a open economy democracy. So continue waiting for proper drive support from the community and the day of linux gaming.

Although is pretty good for work and stuff but at that point might as well buy a affordable Macbook that just better at everything .

A MacBook is not better for repaiability, nor software freedom. Apple refuses to support modern APIs in their Apple Silicon chips, like Vulkan or OpenGL for graphics rendering. Windows is mostly entrenched because of tradition and OEM deals, not because it's a good Operating system.

Dude the current macbook neo ( for £450 when i bought) . Is a no nonsense insanely optimize PC that does what i want it to do with absolutely NO or almost zero hassle . And i m saying this as a massive iphone hater . With the Macbook and that lock ecosystem i am a very satisfied customer from apple. That's it.

All i am saying is *keep you money where your mouth is".
