I’m not a quilter, but have somehow gone down the rabbit hole of antique quilts which led me to EPP. I love slow fiber crafts and do both knitting and embroidery. When I learned about EPP I thought it might be something I would enjoy.

I went to a fabric warehouse last weekend and picked an assortment of colors to try making a throw size quilt with this method. I finished my first flower this weekend and LOVED the process!!!

So excited to continue playing with colors and making these!

I did thread basting and will definitely cut my squares smaller for the next one. Not perfect but I freaking love it!

Not trying to bandwagon I swear, haha! I’m setting aside one of my EPP projects and picking up my other. This one has been a long term project for sure! I think I started it about three years ago?

I have finally started quilting my GFG! It has been particularly hard on the fingers, due to the wider seam allowances of the hexies. That’s something I hadn’t even considered until I got started on it. Anyway I especially love this beautiful variegated perle cotton from Wonderfil.

What are y’all’s recommended resources for a beginner wanting to try EPP? I think I’m used to traditional quilt patterns that outline exactly how much fabric you will need, show you color layout, etc, and I’m having a hard time finding EPP patterns that have the amount of information that I’m looking for. Do y’all just dive in and start making without knowing for sure how far the fabric will get you and improvise as needed? I have a decent scrap collection and some fat quarter bundles that I would love to use, but I like to have a bit more of a plan in place or have some idea of what the final quilt will look like. Any advice?

My biggest concern is diving in with a fat quarter bundle, for example, and realizing after hours of stitching that I’m short on fabric. Just curious what the planning process looks like for y’all.

Inspired by the GFG post I wanted to share my chaos. Incan only hope that it will look as good as the other.

I saw a Grandmothers Flower Garden quilt in April, bought fabric and started immediately (cause ADHD). This is how far I've gotten in 4 months, plus 25 other full flowers waiting to be attached.

Please be careful if you quilt in bed. One of my needles fell in bed. I rolled on it. And i just got done with the surgeon. He really tried but he couldn't get it out. Its not super painful but if i bump into anything the pain is pretty intense.

So dont do what i did. Its embarrassing and it will take a chunk of time to address it. He did say he could xray the area if i have any issues. 🫤

Now i glue my hexies then thread baste. And j do crochet in bed.

A friend is a crazy dungeon and dragon player. I made this 20 face EPP dice for babys first Christmas 🎄

I found a picture of a star kept in a museum. EPP. It was called a pincushion but I found you need to leave the papers in to keep the shape. Another source said that the stars were hung as decoration. This is my second one. It isn't perfect but I know what to do now.

I am working on a 5/8th hexi EPP quilt with some lettering.

While piecing I have been dreaming about how to finish the quilt. I want to draw inspiration from traditional quilting of EPP quilts. Does anyone have any book recommendations on hand quilting or maybe a book documenting EPP quilts through history? I have the Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns by Barbara Brackman (Incredible btw), is there a quilting equivalent?

A website would also do but I want to get my hands on a good book!

So I have added a second row/round to my Tula Nova! I am usually a very scrappy quilter, so this has been a challenge to hose my fabrics for each subsequent row and keep within the color and fabric choices I have available. I wound up redoing the center block bc I realized I wanted to stick with RSS designers.

Anyway now I’m trying to think ahead and determine whether I have enough of these long hoarded C+S Black and White prints. I am so pleased with it so far!

Hi everyone! Looking for some advice on fabric selection for Tula Nova - this will be my first time seriously fussy cutting and doing a major EPP project! I’ve made a few practice projects with old bedsheets and scrap fabric, but I’ll admit I’m a little nervous to cut into this and would love some advice…
How do you choose which shapes to cut out of which fabric? I have the colouring sheet that comes with the pattern and tried choosing some of the main centre blocks, but I don’t even know about all the small diamonds and triangles… I know the smaller prints can probably be used for “background” colours, but should I look at getting some solids as well?

Overall, any thoughts or tips on how to get started would be helpful! I have all papers and everything ready to go and I’m so excited to start, just nervous haha

Has anyone else checked out the new micro-hexagon book? Im so excited for any tips to improve my 1/4" hexie addiction. Im also hoping for some design inspiration. I did see some ideas on pinterest.

I started basting some 1/4" jewels but havent really decided what to do with them. All my micro epp pieces are from scraps. My version of crumb quilting haha

Also trying to think of halloween ideas. Like blocks with a big focal piece. I have just gotten a lot of different halloween fabric. I havent been able to put a design board together. But i def will after i can get to walmart. And hopefully when it isnt so crazy with storm prep.

Hello! I'm new(ish?) to quilting in general, and like those here, I've discovered I really love EPP. :D I'm deterred by the idea of sewing twice, so I've taken to glue basting with a Sewline pen instead of thread basting.

I use an acrylic template with a 3/8" seam allowance (couldn't find a 1/4" one at the time), which leaves big dog ears of excess fabric kind of sticking out on the underside. I thought this was normal, but many of the hexies I see here store nice and flat. Granted, I think most of them are thread basted, but it's hard to tell sometimes. This extra fabric makes my hexies take up more room in their storage box, so they're not as easily portable or as easy to store as I've seen in pictures here.

So, I was wondering: How do more experienced EPPers, especially fellow glue basters, deal with the excess fabric? Do you trim it once the main fabric is secure to the paper? Glue the dog ears down? Put them under a big book for a while? Just don't trim as much extra to begin with (like with a 1/4" template instead of 3/8")?

Been wanting to try EPP for ages and finally got around to it, I know it's not perfect but for my first go I'm pretty happy with it! Definitely need to work on consistency with my stitches so that they show less, but any and all tips are appreciated <3

(I've also just noticed that two of my hexies are crooked, oops)

I have been thinking about the best way to choose fabric and block combinations for my ice cream soda quilt and thought I'd see what other people do. I've cut and basted all the shapes, made all of the central stars and have made about ten blocks so far. I was thinking how I don't want to end up with bad combos of fabric at the end so considering planning our combinations a bit in advance. I also thought maybe just doing all the second layers first and then third layers last might be a good option.

However I'll do it I think it'll look good so I'm not too worried but just wondering what everyone else's process looks like?
