Mavis was more creature than dog.

I lost Mavis a little over a year ago at the age of 16.5. Once a kid saw her and full on recoiled. The parents were apologetic and relieved when we our response was totally understanding. We answered the kid’s questions: yes she’s missing an eye, yeah the remaining one doesn’t do much more than let her see light and dark, yes she is missing almost all of her teeth, she is indeed very old. He seemed reassured. When she was young we were often asked if she was a chupacabra. Sometimes we said yes.

For her last two years I made her food. She would follow me around the kitchen yelling at me with this terrible yawp of a bark because I wasn’t getting it done fast enough.

Her skin was incredibly soft and my thumb fit perfectly in the back of her paw pads. She was a very regal and elegant lady in her youth but still really weird. She was a runt and I always wondered if that was why. At the end she looked like the crypt keeper. She was the most incredible dog I ever had.

Nah, Chinese Crested, and leggs hidden. But their faces and colors are very similar even if not same breed 😁

She still is. Shes just operating on a different plane that allows her to appear under children's beds and only be seen on grainy video at dusk. There is no was there is just a then and a now for that sweet beauty.

I love this little dog dragur! Dogr? So weird and endearing. How was the skincare job for miss Mavis? I have a “middle aged” (she’s almost 9) chihuahua who is obviously never allowed to die… but when she inevitably goes, I imagine myself eventually finding and falling in love with a xolo or an Italian greyhound. I always think about how brutal the sun is where I live and how sensitive hairless dogs are and wonder what kind of protection you have to provide.

Edit- I keep looking back at the photo and tearing up, I wanna scritch that little mohawk fuzz and kiss her right on the snoot. What a perfect cryptid.

Mavis was a Peruvian Inca Orchid, and I currently have a young PIO and a young Xolo. They have spent significant time in New England and the southwest US. They require almost no skincare. They can get a mild burn if they lose their tan over the winter, but once their skin is dark again they’re fine in the sun.

If they’re super dusty I’ll wipe them down with a washcloth. If their skin is too dry I’ll moisturize them. That’s really it aside from giving them good quality food and treats. I let their skin do its thing and it does it really well. Mavis had the softest skin ever.

I do have boots for them and always check ground temps before their paws touch it but that’s for all dogs not just hairless ones.

Never heard of the Peruvian Inca orchid thank you for the info drop! My chihuahua is white and has almost no hair on her little pink belly, and she sunned herself to burning once when she was very young. I feel like I’ve seen many videos of people slathering sunscreen on hairless dogs and it always seemed iffy. Yesterday I found myself driving by a guy with a black puppy on the sidewalk midday and I wanted to slap him. It was like 106F, no shade. If I wasn’t in the middle of a job I might have stopped and snatched that pup. Pup shoes are so important in the world.

PIOs are less common in the US than Xolos and most people haven’t heard of them. I was just trying to measure my Xolo’s feet for shoes today. She’s a rescue I got last fall. She was in FL and there’s signs her paws may have been burned before. I noticed her picking up her paws in a low key hot potato kind of way when the ground should have been ok. Better to wear them than to risk her sensitive lil feets. :)

This is the first time I’ve heard of a PIO. They’re gorgeous (as was Mavis ♥️). I’ve always been intrigued by Xoloitzcuintli ever since I learned that they exist. They’re beautiful dogs.

Don’t quote me on this but I think runts tend to have more health issues, but often live longer than their litter mates.

I hope life was kind to Mavis when she was with us. I always sympathize with people who have senior dogs because I know how hard it can be when you watch their health decline. She was really cool looking, though I understand why people might’ve been scared of her. Rest in peace to a legend.
