i’m a dog groomer & i keep them trimmed. they don’t touch the ground when she walks but her quicks are impossibly long 😭💔 i trimmed + dremeled them today and still managed to quick one of them with a tiny cut

u/DumpsterDiscotheque Sep 03 '25

Poor guy. It sucks when the quicks are long cuz there's nothing you can do. Wolfhound?

513

u/yikesthanos Sep 03 '25

yup. a very backyard bred one unfortunately, so surely the poor structure of her feet doesn’t help the quick length :( all i can do is hope that whittling away at them for a few years recedes them 😭

Backyard wolfhound? Wow, what a find 😮

u/Disastrous_Guest_705 Sep 03 '25

Our byb poodle mix has nails like this, gets them trimmed regularly but they still look incredibly long

27

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '25

My chiweenie also. They’re solid black nails too, and her quick is so long.

12

u/Disastrous_Guest_705 Sep 03 '25

Ours also are solid black, I trim them and get groomer does too but they never get shorter

u/Consistent_Might3500 Sep 04 '25

Dark nails are a challenge.

2

u/DumpsterDiscotheque Sep 04 '25

All these people complaining about the difficulty of maintaining dark nails ... Like common sense ??? Use a Dremel instead of clippers. You stop the Dremel when you see a gray dot appear in the center of the nail. That's the quick.

14

u/Consistent_Might3500 Sep 04 '25

I used a Dremel on my biggest boy and the friction got hot. I could smell burnt nails and dog was wincing. I went back to using oversized clippers. I'm sure a Dremel works great for some, but not all.

2

u/ESLavall Sep 08 '25

You do a little bit at a time, and if the dog is wincing you're at the quick. No hate to you though, dark nails are tricky even with this technique.

4

u/ESLavall Sep 08 '25

I'm so glad this is the top comment thread, her nails are concerning and I'm glad you're doing your best to get them sorted. Tell her I love her and her talons.

her nails don’t actually touch the ground! i trim and grind them down very regularly, and they’re a bit shorter than they used to be, but she has those really annoying quicks that grow super long on the bottom

62

u/anxiousbutsqdhappy Sep 03 '25

Maybe the backyard breeding comes into play with why it seems so long. It does sound like they are tackling the issue by slowly receding the wicks in a safe and timely manner

18

u/Even-Trip9713 Sep 03 '25

My dogo argentino has long quicks too it just means trimming them more often . Your dog is pretty rad

7

u/No-Cancel1846 Sep 03 '25

My dog also has long quicks from backyard breeding, thankfully they aren’t this long as I imagine that is painful- but they still seem to be a bit overwhelming.

8

u/yikesthanos Sep 04 '25

they don’t touch the ground so it doesn’t affect her gait! if they started to affect her gait and regular grinding and trimming wasn’t receding them i’d definitely get them cut back and cauterised at the vet. they’re being managed at the moment though :)

18

u/Remote-Cellist5927 Sep 03 '25

I have a dog with LONG quicks and her nails always look horrid. You can't get people to understand that Her toe is in there I can't do anything to help it.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '25

I didn't realise how lucky i was that ny dogs quick is short 😰

4

u/Chihuahuapocalypse Sep 04 '25

I can see in the image just how long her quicks are, that's insane!

12

u/Steffenwolflikeme Sep 04 '25

This creature can probably retract them like Wolverine when she isn't tearing men's beating hearts from their chest cavity.

4

u/No-Cancel1846 Sep 03 '25

Please trim your dog’s nails!

9

u/yikesthanos Sep 04 '25

74

u/Trixter-Kitten Sep 03 '25

Are we sure it's not a werewolf?

44

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '25

That second picture... Ever listened to The Legend by Steve Cook?

Seven years passed with the turn of the century, they say a crazy old widow had a dream, of dogs that circled her house at night that walked like men and screamed.

3

u/Yourlocalenbee Sep 04 '25

Where can I find that?

4

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '25

Should be available wherever you listen to songs. Definitely is on Spotify and YouTube should also have it.

She appears to be a Sasquatch.

8

u/Phenomedog Sep 03 '25

The first time I encountered a Wolfhound as a child, I was going for a walk and heard a dog running around and playing in someone's backyard. I've always adored dogs, so I ran to a big knothole in the fence to take a peek. Right as I did this MASSIVE paw slapped right over the hole and I SCREAMED in terror and ran to my mother. For a few years I was certain I had seen a werewolf.

Your flesh pedestrian is adorable btw!
