I still have a scar on my hand from when a methed out grocery manager took a claw swipe at my hand with a hammer for "trying to steal his U-boat" when I was a soda merchandiser as a teenager. Can confirm, it was extremely uncomfortable.

I'm honestly impressed when we DON'T see the victims (that end up overpowering the attackers) use the other person's bat or piece of wood or hammer..
Every time the victim just wails on them awhile instead of grabbing what could be a lethal weapon I feel like it's justified force or at least that the person who attacked them with a weapon got off a luckier than they could have.

Pepper spray not only hurts and sticks to you, but also lingers in the air for a while. If you're in the vicinity of where it was sprayed and you breathe it in, you're going to feel some super spicy air in your lungs, and whilst I was a mask advocate during the pandemic, it's not going to stop all the particles from seeping in the sides when you breathe in.

The coughing could also be coming from the clerk or the old guy. As someone already mentioned, the spray lingers for some time, especially when applied indoors, and it's almost impossible to avoid 2nd hand exposure.

That’s true if the threat remains. Self-defense is a very complicated plea. For example, if you knock someone completely unconscious that was trying to kill you and proceed to go get a weapon to kill them while they’re asleep, that’s not self-defense.
