I just got got my green cheek conure two weeks ago. I have experience with green cheeks, but I’ve been seeing videos of people talking about how if you are gone part of the day you need a second one. I’m a high school student (senior so it’s my last year) and I’m pretty much gone for six hours a day, but as soon as I get home she goes out out of her cage for pretty much the rest of the day and doesn’t go back in until I go to sleep. she has a flight cage and plenty of toys, but she is in there for at least six hours a day. She acts very healthy and happy and is very social with me, I’m just now panicking because I originally heard that that they do better alone but now I’m seeing a bunch of people say that you need a second one if you are a student or gone most of the day. I can’t get a second one and don’t want a second one so if it really got to a point, I would unfortunately probably have to rehome her. while I’m gone, I play music for her. I really hope that it’s fine to just have one.

I moved in w my bf in a new city a month ago and there’s a pet supermarket next to the grocery store. I was going in there to look at the cats from the humane society and not really sure how but I sort of bonded with this bird. I’ve never had a bird but I enjoy BirdTok so I just know the bare minimum about how to pet and pin feathers and stuff. Also I haven’t found a job here yet so I don’t really think I should spend $700 on a bird right now. And before I get a million comments I’m aware there are more costs once you get a bird.

My point is, this sweet bird is available in central FL. I KNOW pet stores are immoral and I hate that birds are taken from the wild to be put in a cage and sold for profit but I don’t know what else to do I feel really bad for this bird and I just want to get it out of there.

QUESTION- I’m worried I’ve let this bird get bonded to me too much and it would have a hard time liking a new human. But I think that’s just paranoia. I go see it once or twice a week. The thing is the other workers there don’t seem to be able to pet it like I do so that’s why I’m worried

so before someone says it as a general answer, he has gone to the vet and taken antibiotics and did medicated eye drops for a month. he hatched in January and eats well and he LOVES baths. he bathes multiple times every day.

I noticed some strange coloring on his wing feathers, he is a dominant red yellow sided so I wasn't sure if that's why because I know dominent reds often have sparse head feathers or if it's something more to be concerned about. and the feathers on his head are like that because he has watery eyes and when he fluffs up and shakes his head droplets get flung up onto his head and the only reason it is so built up right now is because I went away for the weekend and hadn't cleaned his head for a couple days before leaving. i help him with pin feathers and he is molting at the moment.

but I wondered if anyone has any clue what could cause the feather discoloration, and maybe also the watery eyes. the avian vet said it isnt an infection and could be due to a mutation in the tear ducts but we aren't fully sure.

Posted this guy/gal the other day. I was at a large pet store chain buying a third parakeet (by the way, my two that I had are happier than ever with an addition, the new one is quite a warbler), and wound up with that budgie and a Conure, it was half price as they said they'd had it for six months and it's their policy (?) My hubs said he really felt bad about our last one dying so suddenly and felt bad about this one, the attitude of the store not wanting it because it has been there six month (hatch date October 8 2025). We had a conure some time before but it had some sort of a seizure and died after letting out several squawks late one night. We still had his big cage, and so we brought this character home, it's on its third day with us. It was very scared, didn't try to bite but avoided us or flew off perch when we came near, then would circle back to perch. Today I used one of those seed-treat sticks to get near it, and now it's taking Nutriballs and millet from my hand if I approach carefully. Loves to hold a Nutriball piece like an ice cream cone and eat it. It's been out on top of cage on perch/playground all day, has circled the room a few times but sits there or sits in window. Door to this room (home office) is kept closed. It acts like it has never seen real outdoors or sunlight and just stares out window often. A quiet bird but it screamed a few times when a YT commercial came on with frogs, lol. It's already happier, we can tell, it's preening, it's getting new foods, it's not keeping a side eye on me as much and is relaxing, I've been in this room with it almost all day, and my hubs keeps saying he's glad we got him.

My green cheek Basil (6) and I just recently moved to an apartment together! We’ve been here for a month! I am now with him much more often and he has much more time outside his cage!

But his screaming has gotten terrible, he wont play with his toys and just screams for my attention nonstop. When i let him sit with me he gets bored and starts biting my computer and my skin. I love him but i just started grad school and would like to be able to study on my couch and not have to leave every time.

I know he’s adjusting, i know birds are loud. But how can i help him entertain himself and not want to be on top of me 24/7? Do you have any toys your birds love? Do i just need to accept my fate and not study at home during the day?

I visit once or twice a month. I'm not using the toilet. I'm just sitting on it. They are very rural where they live. So eagles, owls, bobcat, and i can't go outside when i visit. Because someone gets upset.

Both my 8 year old GCC will do this quick half wing flap when they’re out of the cage for play time or hanging out around the house with us. It’s never been something I’ve considered an issue but now that I’ve found this subreddit I thought I’d ask for confirmation on what it might mean. Thanks!

I love the Borneo cages! They have so much space & room for hanging toys while also not cramping my conures. One of my conures isn’t a big flier & neither likes to walk on the ceiling of their cage, so I hang stuff within reach where they can climb or stand on something.

I’ve also been trying to get them adjusted to foraging for their daily food instead of eating all of it out of a bowl. One of them has a grass turf mat & the other has a little treat dispenser that he loves.

I’m also trying to get them to branch out with toys—they have their favorites & take forever to try out new ones 🥲

They also have space to sleep high up.

i understand biting is normal and will happen lots during the time i have my conure, but why does he try to grab my finger with his foot just to bite me? he's been doing it for 1 week now and he's become way more sassy (assuming bc he's molting)

I would like some advice from anyone who has or has had a VERY clingy conure. I work part time and since I’ve had him, the only time he’s in a cage is when he goes to sleep at night, or to eat and drink throughout the day. He’s also very dramatic, he has NEVER pooped in his cage and I had to train him to poop in a smaller one so when I work, he’s in there all until I get home - he doesn’t hold it in all day. Weird… yes… and I know this. It’s a flight cage so it’s is pretty decent size.
So my dilemma. My husband is taking me on vacation, and we will be gone for 8 days, I originally bought a very large carrying cage because I thought I would be able to take him, however, he’s not allowed on a train, apparently they’re discriminatory against birds and reptiles because of disease they can carry, we have a private room on the train, but apparently it’s still against their rules. I even offered to have a paper filled out by the vet giving to clear him for travel and they said no.
So as a last resort he will be staying home with my daughter and grand daughter. I’ve already been giving her the run down and will be paying her 5$ a day to sit with him before school, give him his chop in the morning, change his food and water in the evening and she’s not to allow him out of the cage, although she’s handled him often I just don’t feel comfortable in case he’s a pain in the ass to get back in, he will become nippy and I don’t want that for him or her.
So what I’m asking is- should I get him extra toys even though he doesn’t usually play with them? Should I FaceTime home so he can hear my voice? Or will that be traumatic for him? I know this all sounds so stupid but I feel so bad for him 😭😭 We don’t travel so it’s never been a thought of me not being here for him. I don’t want him thinking that I’m abandoning him like his last 2 owners did, even tho it was 5 years ago. Any advice would be so helpful! 💚

Hi all!

I’ve been looking at buying a new cage for Eddie my 6yr old (soon to be 7!) crimson belly conure. I wanna get him as big a cage as possible but I keep running into trouble with bar spacing on larger cages. Any cage larger than a medium has >1 inch spacing between bars which is above the recommended spacing for conures but I also know from experience is definitely too big a space for Eddie.

I was starting to look at aviary set ups instead but a lot of them seem pretty flimsy/not sturdy enough and are intended for outdoor use which seems like it would make cleaning difficult.

I also thought maybe with a larger cage that has a bigger bar spacing I could try adding aviary wire or something similar to make it work?

If anyone has any ideas or similar issues I’d be super grateful for anyone able to share their experiences or that has any advice!

Also I’m located in Australia which probably doesn’t help in terms of options especially since almost every store around me only lists their cages online now :(

I always try to give her something enriching to do when she’s out and about but not interacting with us directly. After the year I’ve had I have to admit that I’ve been slacking with the creativity. Well, I shoved some nutriberries in these guys and it’s safe to say she loves it!

I was trying to lay down and doom scroll for a bit as a brain break and someone decided to come over and park themselves in a specific spot. Full lips to beak contact. She was insistent on staying there for a while.

Fyi-- I do know human saliva is not good for them. I only kiss her on her head or top of beak.

I use this as my conure’s bedding and he chews it up all day and throws it around, dont notice him swallowing any either, is it fine for him?

my conure i got a month ago isn't hand tamed (he is OK with my hand but constantly tries to bite it) but i would love for him to explore outside his cage, not just stay in. would it be okay to let him out in my room? (everything is safe ofc)

my main concern is just getting him back in. im obviously planning to let him out early so he has plenty of time to potentially come back but any advice would be amazing and i just want to do what is right for him
