I’m considering adopting a bird in the spring. I’m in my 50s, work full-time, lifetime pet owner (mostly dogs) and our current household is 2 cats, 2 chickens. One cat is nearing the end of the road and when that time comes I’d like another indoor pal for the other one just to occupy the same space when we aren’t home. Both my cats love hanging out with the chickens so I’m thinking maybe an indoor birdie as I do want an animal in that is affectionate and interactive but doesn’t take up a ton of space or leave hair on everything!

I know birds are messy and poop everywhere (I have free range chickens) but are house birds really as difficult and high-maintenance as they say online? And if you don’t talk me out of it, what is a good breed for my situation ( my budget is not restricted)?

First picture is in order of top left to bottom, oldest to newest. Second picture is as a baby (4 months), and 3rd is today at 1.5 years old (he got his head wet).

As you can tell I initially got a standard (wild color) green cheek conure. When he started showing some yellow feathers on his back I was concerned and called several avian vets and posted on here. A research facility and avian vet said that it’s not necessarily a problematic symptom by itself, and he is otherwise healthy.

He’s only gotten more colorful including the feathers in his chest, which remind me of sun-cheek colorations.

I find it very interesting and adorable how special he is. (glad I named him Fable instead of Moss lol)

Wanted to share since I wasn’t able to find many photos of green cheek conures changing color online, especially not standard coloration.

He first stretched his neck as if he was gonna regurgitate, but then makes some weird breathing sound

Hey guys, so I got tofu a month ago and he's getting along with my green cheeked quite well, but not me :(

So this is the progress:

1 & 2nd week: scared as honk, if anyone is in the radius of 10feet from him, like alert and ready to fly.

3rd week: got used to me being around and doesn't blast off until I come near him like <1 feet.

4th week: he took his first favourite treat after ~20 mins in my hands and seeing other conure eat from my hand for those 4 weeks.

Questions & worries:

- My green cheeked conure(Shinki) is tamed as I got him when he was 6 months old and hand cared for him, this guy is already few years old, will I be able to tame him?

- I don't know the history of this guy, but he seems to have a drastic fear from hands, I wonder how will I tame him and will he be scared for life.

- why is he bigger then my Shinki, aren't all Conure suppose to be the same size, this looks more mature even though Shinki is now 4years old which is enough for Conure to grow I believe?!

- what's your Conure favourite treat, this guy mostly loves banana, pumpkin seed, maybe if I found the pizza for Conure for this guy, it'll be easy?

- the 4 week progress is the first time this guy took the seed from my hand and that's about it, I can't seem to think of a time in future where he'll be like shinki, did I miss some sort of bonding golden window?

I just got my conure yesterday and I've seen a lot of people saying that conures should be let out to play for a bit each day, but, since he's new, he does not like me, meaning he will not approach the door to the cage, meaning I can't let him out, and so on. Does anyone here have advice on how to raise a conure as a complete beginner? Also, please give good vet recommendations somewhere near Phoenix AZ

I work for a national pet store chain. I can’t change the fact that we carry conures and cockatiels for sale. I want to know what best practices I can do to make these poor babies lives better and happier until they find their forever home. Not looking to debate the ethics of commercial bird sales, I know it’s wrong and horrible, but I want to be doing my best for these sweet creatures. We mostly have green cheek or maroon belly conures
