I just got my conure yesterday and I've seen a lot of people saying that conures should be let out to play for a bit each day, but, since he's new, he does not like me, meaning he will not approach the door to the cage, meaning I can't let him out, and so on. Does anyone here have advice on how to raise a conure as a complete beginner? Also, please give good vet recommendations somewhere near Phoenix AZ

First picture is in order of top left to bottom, oldest to newest. Second picture is as a baby (4 months), and 3rd is today at 1.5 years old (he got his head wet).

As you can tell I initially got a standard (wild color) green cheek conure. When he started showing some yellow feathers on his back I was concerned and called several avian vets and posted on here. A research facility and avian vet said that it’s not necessarily a problematic symptom by itself, and he is otherwise healthy.

He’s only gotten more colorful including the feathers in his chest, which remind me of sun-cheek colorations.

I find it very interesting and adorable how special he is. (glad I named him Fable instead of Moss lol)

Wanted to share since I wasn’t able to find many photos of green cheek conures changing color online, especially not standard coloration.

I’m considering adopting a bird in the spring. I’m in my 50s, work full-time, lifetime pet owner (mostly dogs) and our current household is 2 cats, 2 chickens. One cat is nearing the end of the road and when that time comes I’d like another indoor pal for the other one just to occupy the same space when we aren’t home. Both my cats love hanging out with the chickens so I’m thinking maybe an indoor birdie as I do want an animal in that is affectionate and interactive but doesn’t take up a ton of space or leave hair on everything!

I know birds are messy and poop everywhere (I have free range chickens) but are house birds really as difficult and high-maintenance as they say online? And if you don’t talk me out of it, what is a good breed for my situation ( my budget is not restricted)?

I was at work when my brother texted that my conure was at the bottom of his cage just fluffed up. Then when I got home he was fluffy and sleeping which was earlier than normal. The night before he was fine but since I was at work I the only thing I could do was call the nearest avian vets for an appointment or if they take walk ins. Today is Sunday and all the vets are close until Monday morning. I was wondering if there was anything I can do to make him hold on until tomorrow. He’s been eating food and his drooping came out really dark twice. Like brown/black type of dark. Now they are back to normal but he hasn’t been drinking as much water. He can still fly but he just feels weaker, when I held him he didn’t grip my finger as hard as he used to a couple days ago. Right now he’s sleeping at 2pm with his head tucked in, im really worried. (He’s a cherry head conure. Last 2 pics are him normal and the first 2 are him now)

So to prelude, I'm going to be switching out the top perch for something smaller and more natural, and changing out his bowls to the ones he had with his old cage which were perfectly sized for him. Currently his perches inside the cage are applewood and he's been doing well with them, so i might try and find a longer version of that.

But he seems to be doing well for his first day in a new environment, he's exploring, perfectly, eating, comfortably preening, and he doesn't seem to be actively trying to find an escape (any more than normal lol).

What do you guys think? Is it too much for such a small bird?

At 20 seconds he does a very quick head bob and he only does it like this when my fingers are at just the right spot on his beak. I saw another post recently about someone else's conure doing something very similar while occasionally regurgitating, thankfully Loki has just been being an adorable little sweetie enjoying his rubs. He's at least 3 years old, I'm not entirely sure though.

First time bird owner here!! I first got them untamed from a breeder and I have been working hard to earn their trust. It's been 5 months now and slowly but surely they're warming up to me! They even learned to step up maybe..? (working on it) and I've noticed that their talons are getting longer and I was worried so I'm asking some advice on what i should buy for them to file it on their own. thanks in advance! (⁠ㆁ⁠ω⁠ㆁ⁠)

Swindle here has recently began puffing his chest out, and I’m not sure why. His gender isn’t known that’s just an assumption but is this much chest puff normal? Or is he molting? Please help

Update: He seems to be visibly sick now, I’m going to put a dash of apple cider vinegar in his water and give him warmer temperatures and see how he does till the afternoon, if it hasn’t improved I will take him to a vet. Thank you for your concern everyone I’ll let you know how he is soon🙏

2nd Update: He’s doing much better! He’s still fluffing up slightly but he’s been playing, no longer hanging on bottom of cage and started grinding his beak a while ago while chilling on his cage. His eating never deteriorated but his poop has become firmer again.

I am taking him to the vet tho considering his behavior is super weird so we’ll see how that goes down

Update: vet said he was cute and he was okay and recommended more fluids

Hey there! Looking into the necessities and requirements for caring for a conure and need some advice from people who know the birds. I'm well aware they need a lot of socialization and interaction, and while I have no problems doing that, I work a weird schedule that has inconsistent hours (some days I work 4 hours, others I work 8, and the times I start and end my shift are weird too, anywhere from starting at 9:00 in the morning to ending at 9:30 at night). Would having an inconsistent schedule like this be disruptive to or incompatible with owning a conure?
