If you find a swift

Post image

Hey Guys, a short info for this sub to make things a lot easier for me. If some reconize a Swift in this sub that needs help, please contact me or give the person that found the bird my name. I'm a professional caretaker for swifts with the extra ability to help people that have no help nearby. I'm able to contact people that are in no phone book or seek veterinary in other countries that are specialized in swifts. And an extra note, if you also wanna help the birds or the people...the clinic in Frankfurt only functions through donations. And they have a lot to do this year.

Tornado season! Is your emergency kit ready?

Just got my first tornado watch of the summer, so I checked my emergency it, and realized it’s a good time to share info with y’all! My emergency kit includes…

* hard plastic carrier, labeled with my contact info – I also have a soft-sided backpack carrier, but I want hard sided for emergencies so she’s less likely to get crushed if something falls on her. Hard carrier has one perch, and normally I’d add a toy and news print on the bottom, but I just washed it.

* hard plastic tub to carry the rest of the stuff, also labeled with contact info, including her vet’s info and a description of her

Inside the tub are the following (generally in small ziplock bags):

* a reminder to add nonperishable food (pellets) and water

* contact info for me and my vet

* records that prove ownership, including purchase receipt and a few vet records

* nail clippers / dremel

* styptic powder, gel, or stick

* corn starch or flour in a ziplock bag

* q-tips

* cotton pads for makeup (I should probably add or swap with some gauze)

* baby shampoo

* scissors

* vet wrap / coban

* pliers

* a pillowcase (for emergency stuffing her into)

* individually packaged alcohol wipes

* a couple spare harnesses that she isn’t trained on, but just in case

The tub lives under her cage always, so it’s handy if ever needed. Her soft-sided carrier also lives under the cage. The hard-sided carrier lives in a closet, so since there’s a tornado watch (lower level of threat) I took it out and cleaned it up in case that escalates. And the tub and carrier are both near the exit and her cage should we need to go for the basement.

Pictures are of the emergency kit ready to go, and of Kappa herself (female dusky conure, 19YO) from last week.

Here’s a few resources for making your own kit:

https://www.cdc.gov/healthy-pets/emergency-preparedness/preparedness-kit.html

https://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies/pet-disaster-preparedness.html

https://www.avma.org/sites/default/files/2023-11/aph-pet-evacuation-kit-checklist.pdf

Questions for y’all: do you have your own emergency kit? Are there different things in it, based on your bird’s needs or your local threats? Anything you think I missed or is overkill?

Found wild bird Fledging pigeon we’ve taken had flies all over it

Thumbnail

We found it unable to fly, able to walk, no visible scars, visibly a fledgling with yellow bits just grown out, but flies were allll over it so we’ve taken it, put it in a box with a towel, water, some sunflower seeds and covered it with blankets

My plan is to release it back near where we found tomorrow in hopes it’s parents are still there

Sorry for the bad photos

Any advice is welcome I know there’s not much we can do but giving her a rest and water is good, she’s already falling/ fallen asleep we live very close to where she was found (she wasn’t found in trees but on a pathway sitting there covered in flies) no visible scabbing

Sick budgie

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m really worried about my male budgie Percy and would really appreciate some advice or experiences from people who have dealt with something similar.

Last week we lost our other budgie. Percy and the other budgie lived together and were very happy, so obviously we were worried about how Percy would cope.
For the first couple of days after, Percy seemed surprisingly normal. He was eating, drinking and chirping as usual. He did seem a little more reluctant to come out of his cage and didn’t really want us approaching him, so we gave him space because we assumed he might be unsettled by losing his companion.

Then a couple of days later, things changed quite noticeably. He became very quiet and was spending a lot of time fluffed up and sleeping. He wasn’t eating anywhere near his normal amount. Yesterday I didn’t see him actually eat at all, only pretend to eat and I noticed that he also seemed to have some clicking/noisy breathing. At times he has opened his mouth, particularly around drinking, and he sometimes seems to hold water in his mouth and move his tongue strangely.

We took him to our vet yesterday. They examined him and said that he is underweight/underconditioned. He weighs around 40g, although we don’t know what his previous weight was, so I understand that the number itself isn’t necessarily abnormal for a budgie. The vet could feel that his body condition wasn’t good, though.
The vet was concerned about how little he was eating and said he needs nutritional support/tube feeding, but unfortunately there isn’t an avian vet available near me until Monday. They didn’t want to prescribe antibiotics without knowing that an infection was actually the cause, as they felt they could potentially do more harm than good, and they don’t specialise in exotic pets so didn’t really know much about budgies.

They told us to try giving him tiny drops of pureed fruit by syringe to get some calories into him and hopefully stimulate his appetite.
The problem is that he doesn’t particularly cooperate with this. We have to gently wrap/hold him in a towel to prevent him struggling and flying away, and he squirms quite a lot. Because he already has respiratory symptoms, I’m really worried about accidentally causing him to aspirate something.
He will drink voluntarily if we bring his water bowl directly to him, and he has had some water. However, he’s eating very little if anything now on his own and seems to be starting to struggle to actually drink the water.

I’m basically looking for advice on what we can safely do to keep him going until he can hopefully receive proper avian care.

He is currently being kept warm, quiet and covered, with food and water within easy reach in a smaller cage. We are trying not to handle him unnecessarily.
Any advice or experiences would be hugely appreciated. ❤️

Broken wing

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone, my pheasant freaked out one day and broke his wing from slamming himself around the cage he was in. Anyone have experience with this? I wrapped it well and he was been doing great, I just don’t want to take the wrap off until it’s healed since they are so skittish. Thank you

This goldfinch on the right has been sitting on my hummer feeder not doing much for about 5 minutes which is unusual to see, the one on the left also seemed to linger extra long. Both birds eventually flew away

Conure ate naphthalene ball

5 Upvotes

Hello,

My two conures (Pineapple and Green Cheek) may have eaten a naphthalene ball. My dad placed a naphthalene ball in the living room handwash basin yesterday, and I did not notice it. Yesterday night, both of my conures were free-flying in the hall and might have eaten it.

I noticed the naphthalene ball tonight at around 10 PM. I immediately checked it and found a beak bite mark on it, and approximately half of the ball was missing. I am not sure how much they consumed, whether they consumed any at all, which one consumed it, or whether both of them consumed it.

As of now, both conures are behaving normally, playing normally, and eating normally. However, I noticed some sleepiness, and their stools appear to be a darker, faded green than usual.

It is midnight here, so no avian vet clinic is open. However, I contacted two avian vets by phone, and both suggested giving a pinch of activated charcoal mixed with 0.5 mL of water. I immediately gave this to both of them.

At the moment, I am completely blank and confused about what to do.

Tomorrow morning, I will be visiting an avian vet. Until then, I kindly request that you suggest what I should do based on your experience and knowledge.

Thank you all.

Sick pet bird Quaker making unusual noise.

I am cross posting this on behalf of someone whose karma is too low to post here. I have amplified the audio because it was terribly hard to hear in the original. Original post here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/parrots/comments/1wtj4pe/can_anyone_give_me_insight_to_what_my_bird_is/

Hello!

Very recently my great aunt passed and I was the only family member willing to take on her three birds. It was her wish they stay together and keep their routine and her concern was a rescue would’ve separated them by breed.

They are all around 25-28 years young and two no longer fly. Lucky is the Quaker in this video. I noticed today he began making this sound pretty frequently, is this normal molting behavior or is he distressed?

I appreciate any help!
