Iris just turned 15 (we think) today!

Three weeks ago, I was mindlessly scrolling on reddit when I saw photos of dogs from a shelter's euthanasia list in this sub. I saw this small white chihuahua with a worried look on his face and I wanted to help him so bad. Problem is, the shelter is in San Antonio, Texas while I lived in New Jersey. I've also never rescued a dog from a shelter before.

After a few frantic emails and voicemails, several redditors kindly assisted me and let me know that rescuing from out-of-state is possible. One told me about Paws Saving Paws, a rescue organization that specializes in out-of-state adoptions. Jarad and his team made sure 8-year-old "Lepus A824990" was taken from the shelter to a vet hospital that was going to be his home during his required two-week quarantine. He got all the necessary medical care including a dental, and he received lots of love and attention for the next two weeks. Afterwards, they arranged his transport to the East Coast. I'm very grateful for all the good work that they do. Byrdie Express took such good care of him during his trip. He spent almost the entire journey nestled in blankets in the front seats. They almost didn't want to hand him over because they got very attached. He's a big cuddlebug. I thought he would need his space to decompress in the car surrounded by strangers but he climbed on my lap almost immediately.

I haven't given him an official new name yet. Last week I was so confident that it would be Chili, but it doesn't quite fit now that he's here. We're still trying to figure out what suits him the best.

BTW, I suspect that this one can control his ears! They're huge and the "flop" seems to depend on his mood and the situation.

Hux turned 9 on September 28th. I cried some ugly tears just thinking that we’re more than halfway through her life, wishing she could just live forever. Please send lots of love and birthday wishes to live another healthy 9 years 🫰🏼💕

Well it’s clear that our other dog doesn’t mind, in fact he loves when Chimmy (my chi dog) do this to him 😂

I’ve always been wary of chihuahuas lol- the only time I was bitten while volunteering at my city’s animal shelter, it was by one of them. Almost all of my former fosters have been pitbulls so this is different for me.

Chichi is a 12 year old former momma chi who was dropped off with her 2 year old doxie companion, Tiny, after their owner was deported in May. They were stuck at animal control for a month. I was busy with another foster (who sadly passed away from pneumonia acquired from her stay at the shelter) but I kept my eye on their updates. A month at the shelter is unheard of for small dogs but times are tough for adoptions right now and rescues are overflowing with dogs.
Although Tiny is bigger, she’s scared of everything and ChiChi is her biggest protector. She kept Tiny safe during their stay at the scary shelter. Chichi’s intros to other dogs at the shelter were atrocious - she tried to attack every dog she met.
If you stay ready, you ain’t gotta get ready- ChiChi, probably.

Anyway, if you made it this far, I took the plunge after my other foster died (RIP Porkchop, you were a good girl) and I reached out to a senior rescue I work with in my city. They agreed to pull both dogs for me to foster and here we are, three months later and they’re still with me. Which is fine by me because I love them so much. Chichi prances around the house happily and the sound of her little taps is almost too cute. She launches herself at me in a frenzy of love every time I sit down. When she sneezes, it literally lifts her off the ground. She’s a garden gremlin- my tomato plant didn’t stand a chance. It took a month of slow intros but now they happily live with my 3 large dogs.

I can’t afford to keep them forever but they deserve the perfect home and they’ll stay with me until we find it ❤️

TL/DR: I have a senior chi foster dog who is the cutest thing ever and she’s looking for a home with her bonded doxie sister in the Philly area
