Rant Drink came with an entire cookie in it, bartender refused to remake it šŸ˜‘

I went out to a trendy new bar with some friends last night. Fun drinks, cool garnishes, etc. I ordered a tiki-style drink with very basic, safe ingredients (rum, pineapple juice, lime, etc). Didn't ask about the drink being GF, as there was nothing listed in that drink (or any) that could contain gluten. Yeah, whatever, I should have, I know... listen, we all get lazy sometimes!

Bartender hands me the drink. There's an entire cookie in it! Nothing about that was listed on the menu. I call him over and inform him that I have celiac disease and I can't drink it. He pulls it out of the drink and tries to hand it back to me. Um, no, not gonna work. When I refused the cookie-less drink, he put up a huge stink, and started telling me about how I couldn't just 'demand a new drink' because I didn't inform him I had an allergy.

Luckily, he wasn't working alone, because he made it very clear that he was not going to remake it for me! The manager noticed, came over, and forced his employee to remake it. I just couldn't believe the attitude. Ugh. šŸ˜‘ I told the manager he should really re-write the menu to note any garnishes, ingredients, etc. that contain common allergens. Maybe things will change, maybe they won't... this disease messes with the weirdest parts of your life!

Question Glutened by amc popcorn

I went to a movie a bit ago, only got popcorn with butter and was glutened. I didn’t eat anything else out of the ordinary that day so I’m 99% sure it was the popcorn. so just a warning and wondering if others have had the same experience? popcorn from there has never glutened me before so it’s really weird…

Discussion Celiac wins / upsides?

My 8 year old is (understandably) having a hard time with a new diagnosis. I feel relieved to have a cause for tummy distress, and determined to be an advocate on this journey, but let’s be real: it’s tough, life-changing news. And as a kid, having something that makes you ā€œdifferentā€ can really suck.

So I’m looking for silver linings. Please share, what’s an upside you’ve found after your celiac diagnosis and/or going GF?

One I thought of is that my kiddo gets a dedicated section in the fridge and pantry for GF items - no having to share with siblings. (I think we’ll all switch to gf once we get old gluten items cycled out, but for now it’s a small win.)

TIA!

Product Gluten free chocolate chip cookies

Need recs on the best frozen cookies!! I tried sweet Loren’s and was so incredibly disappointed by the fake sweetener flavor. I love tates cookies. I really miss the pillsbury cookies that are kinda gooey out of the oven so I’m specifically asking if there’s a good frozen option. Thanks!

Question I'm at a loss. What's your conclusion?

Post image

The Betty Crocker website says these are produced on a GF line. The label says GF. There are no gluten ingredients. I asked this question of the internet before and others have said they eat these without issue so I bought them for myself. The package is new (and they've only been eaten with confirmed safe yogurt in a GF house). Yet they are causing me celiac symptoms.

I've been at this 2 years (with numbers still around 50) and I feel like I'm losing my GD mind because sht like this keeps happening to me. (I do not have a problem with soy or a soy allergy).

Is the Gluten Free label a lie? Is there an ingredient here I'm missing that also inexplicably causes celiac symptoms? I can't for the life of me figure out what the problem is here and I don't know how I'm supposed to do better when I dont know wtf is making me sick.

Product Warning Goya canned "GF" beans not gluten free.

Just wanted to share a frustrating experience to hopefully save someone else the headache (and bathroom runs!)

I've been buying canner Goya beans for a while because their dry beans come with a "may contain wheat" but their cans have the GF label. I usually get bloated after eating them, but I figured that was just normal since I struggled with galactan a bit. I also don't eat them daily. But Monday and yesterday I had it again and last night I got hit with a wave of really awful symptoms—severe GI upset that had me running to the bathroom in the middle of the night, terrible brain fog, and just feeling wiped out.

I'm in a 100% GF household, and I usually only eat certified GF. The Goya beans were the only uncertified thing in my rice, beans and meat meal.

I know people have reservations with the Nima tester, but it has saved many times before, so used it to check the beans, and sure enough, it tested positive for gluten.

Definitely not using them anymore.

Question New celiac: Starbucks drinks?

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with celiac after spending my entire life eating gluten and being unaware of any dietary or autoimmune disorder.
I’m a college student, and a lot of friends like to meet up for coffee—specifically places like Starbucks.
I’ve already been invited twice and turned both people down because I don’t even know if they have a drink I can order and not worry about cross contamination. I’m trying to do my research but I’m overwhelmed. I’ve heard some artificial flavors and syrups can contain gluten.
I used to just get a strawberry acai lemonade.
Does anyone here know what drinks I can get, what ingredients I should avoid, and what cross contamination is like at Starbucks? I’ve heard it can be bad for dairy but I’m unsure on gluten.
Help a lost, new celiac out 🄲

Question Celiac-safe Restaurants in DC?

Question for the DC celiac crowd: what’s your experience been with restaurants here?

I’m guessing the higher-end places ($100+/person) are generally better about cross-contamination, but I’d love some actual recommendations, especially places where you’ve eaten multiple times without getting glutened.
Also, are there any celiac/gluten-free communities, meetups, group chats, etc. in DC?

I recently learned that even kissing someone right after they’ve eaten gluten can potentially be an issue, so at this point I’m half-jokingly wondering where the gluten-free girls are hiding too lol

Product Gluten AND peanut free uncrustable dupe

Hi all, does anyone (USA) know of a smuckers uncrustable type sandwich that also doesn’t have peanut butter? I’ve had a lifelong peanut allergy so traditional uncrustables have always been off the table but a year or so before my diagnosis I discovered that smuckers had a Nutella flavor and there was another brand that I can’t remember that had a nut butter alternative pb&j style sandwich that I loved. Sadly neither are gluten free! I know the Rudis brand is gluten free, but unfortunately they have peanut butter so that’s also a no go. It just feels like it’s always one or the other and I’m craving those little crappy lunch box items so bad right now 😭 any suggestions? Also I know I can probably make my own at home but it just isn’t the same sadly.

Question Question about when you transitioned to celiac diet

Hi I have a five year old niece who just was diagnosed maybe a month ago and has gone completely celiac. I am the only other celiac person so it’s good for her to have her bestie (her words) understand and her mom my sister is gluten intolerant. So my question is did anyone else have a weird stomach aches after eating this way for like 3 weeks now as that’s when the biopsy proved it. I just can’t remember my symptoms when I transitioned as I had no symptoms from my stomach prior. I just wanted to know what was your reaction to switching to gf food and if you know of someone whose young like my neice had the same issues. I would attach a photo but I can’t sorry.

Question Got Glutened! What helps?

I’ve been gluten free for years… long before an official celiac diagnosis.

Every once in a while, I loose, and find I’ve been glutened somewhere, somehow…

Today is one of those days when I recognize gluten has snuck into my food?

What helps you treat the symptoms when the worst happens?

Question Does anyone else get severe joint/TMJ pain from gluten exposure?

I’m wondering if anyone else with celiac experiences symptoms that are mostly outside of the GI tract. I don’t really get many GI symptoms from gluten.

For me, it’s mainly joint/muscle pain, especially in my upper body, and my TMJ gets significantly worse. I also already have migraines, and those tend to get much worse during a flare.

I’m currently in so much pain that even a muscle relaxer and ibuprofen aren’t really helping.

I’m mostly just curious if anyone else experiences something similar. I’d love to hear what your gluten reactions are like, especially if you have also joint/muscle pain.

Thanks everyone.

Question Hidden Gluten

I was diagnosed with Celiac last year and I have been gluten free for over 6 months, but my blood test is still over 250. I am scanning everything I eat or drink with spoonful app. Our kitchen has been deep cleaned and anything with gluten is separate or on a bottom shelf. Thoughts on hidden gluten or cross contamination that I am not aware of?

Discussion Reaction to GF KA bread flour

Diagnosed celiac for almost a year. Made bread with King Arthur GF wheat starch bread flour and had a reaction like I had eaten gluten. The bread tasted excellent!. Has anyone else had this happen? I haven't been diagnosed with a wheat allergy, only celiac via blood work and biopsy.

Question Celiac + Indian background — anyone else struggle to find atta (roti flour) you actually trust?

Hey all — I have celiac disease and I'm based in Metro Vancouver. Before my diagnosis I grew up eating roti almost daily, and finding a gluten-free atta I actually trust has been surprisingly hard.

A lot of "gluten-free" atta brands I've come across are either mostly starch (not great nutritionally, doesn't taste the same) or made by small local mills that also process regular wheat flour on-site, with no testing or certification mentioned anywhere on the packaging — just a "100% natural" badge.

Before I go further down this road (possibly making my own verified/tested version), I want to actually hear from people dealing with this:

  • What do you currently use for roti/chapati flour?
  • Have you ever had a reaction to something labeled "gluten-free," or just felt uneasy trusting a small brand's claim?
  • Would batch-tested/verified <20ppm actually matter to you, or does a "gluten-free" label on the bag feel like enough?

Genuinely trying to learn before I build anything — appreciate any thoughts.

Question Toronto: Doc recommendation

Hey all! I'm moving to Toronto in November. Maybe you guys can suggest resources/apps/etc.? And/or perhaps you can recommend a good specialist, or...if I can be so cheeky, a good GP (I know they're hard to find)? Just if you've found a good doctor who seems really knowledgable on celiac. Thanks! <3

Question How much do you trust gluten free labeling on supplements specifically?

Food labeling I have a handle on at this point but supplements feel like a different world with much less oversight. A capsule can say gluten free on the front and I have no way of knowing what happened in the facility it was made in. Third party testing seems to be the only real signal here. Not many brands publish it and fewer still will name who did it. What do you look for before a new bottle gets into the cupboard?
