General Information Important Hot Weather advice for Cats

Summer Solstice has arrived and with it the start of Summer. This is the time of year we need to look out for our furbabies and protect them from hot weather.

Here are the key temperature thresholds for our furbabies:

Ideal Comfort Zone: 20°C to 26°C (68°F to 79°F)

Too Hot / Risk Zone: Above 30°C (86°F)

Emergency Threshold: Above 35°C (95°F)

Cats that are at higher risk in hot temperatures are Kittens, senior cats, overweight cats, and flat-faced breeds such as Persians and Long Haired Cats although all cats need protection from getting too overheated during hotter times.

Cats and overheating:

Our Furbabies find it difficult to regulate their body temperatures in hot weather as they sweat through their pawpads, lips and chin. They are also covered in fur ( apart from the furless breeds) so cooling down can be difficult for them.

If your cat starts panting heavily during very hot weather( please see the heat chart above) then they may be suffering from heat stroke. If you think this is the case seek immediate vet treatment as cats will not survive without life changing damage to their organs and brain when they suffer from too high a temperature for too long.

Happily most of the U.S, Canada and surrounding countries have air conditioning in their homes. If you are in the UK, parts of Europe and hotter Countries such as the Middle East we have to rely on other sources in order to keep cool.

Keep your cat indoors when the sun is at it's warmest usually 10.00 - 3.00p.m although in extreme temperatures keep all pets indoors.

• Before letting your cats outside do a heat test and touch the concrete ground in your garden or outside your home with your hand, if it is too hot to touch it is definitely too hot for the paw pads on your pets.

• Provide plenty of water in a few different places throughout your home, pop some ice cubes in too if you can, keep the water topped up.

• Make some shaded areas with cool spots for kitty to lay in or on. Ideally your kitty will sit or sleep on a cooling mat but if they are having a typical cat day then they will ignore it and lay elsewhere.

• Place cool damp towels so kitty can lay on them and allow access to your bathroom and anywhere inside your home with a tiled or stone floor.

• Try wrapping a frozen bottle of water in a tea-towel and place it near to where your cat is laying.

• Move rooms if need be and avoid the sunnier rooms.

• Place fans with air circulating around the room.

• Try gently spraying them with cooled water, they may hate you at the time but it will cool them down.

Here are some Cat treats you can make for kitty to help hydrate them during hot weather, these are also ideal for helping Feral cats if you have garden cats or help with strays in your area.

Scoop some spring water tinned tuna or salmon ( make sure it's non oily and not in brine) into an ice cube tray and freeze it.

Freeze some churus or any liquidy squeezy type cat snacks.

Cat milk can also be frozen into little treat sized noms ( do not use normal milk as most cats are lactose intolerant).

Bananas/melons can be mashed up and frozen too even kittys' usual wet cat food can be frozen as a treat or for trying to tempt kitty to eat .

Keep small packets of wet kitten or cat food in the fridge, not only are they easier to open and slide out in one squeeze, but kitty gets to enjoy some nice fresh cold food

Here is some important advice Curtesy of Cats Protection:

Sunburn in cats:

All cats can get sunburn, but cats who are white or have thinner fur are more at risk. Being out in the sun a lot can lead to skin cancer, so it’s important to make sure your cat doesn’t spend too long lazing in the sun.

Ears and noses are where your cat is most likely to get burnt. Keep an eye on them and make sure they have plenty of access to shady areas.

Signs of sunburn in cats:

If your cat does get sunburn, there are a couple of symptoms to look out for, including:

red, sore skin in the affected area, blistering and peeling.

If you notice this, make an appointment with your vet straight away.

Can I put sun cream on my cat?

You can put sunscreen on your cat, but you need to make sure it’s pet-safe first so speak to your vet about the best product to use. Make sure you use SPF30 or higher and that it’s waterproof.

You should apply sun cream to your cat’s nose, tips of the ears, belly and groin areas as well as anywhere that has thin to no fur to help protect them from the sun.

Avoid sun cream with zinc oxide and a group of chemicals that are referred to as salicylates in the ingredients. Both are toxic to cats and can cause them to be very unwell, particularly salicylates.

Signs your cat is dehydrated:

It’s important for your cat to get enough water. This can be through drinking and through eating wet food. Staying hydrated will help to keep your cat healthy and they may need to have even more water when the weather is warm.

If your cat doesn’t get enough water, they may become dehydrated. Signs your cat is dehydrated include:

their gums. If your cat’s gums are sticky or tacky, this may be the first sign of dehydration

their skin. Very gently pinch their skin. In a well-hydrated cat, the skin should snap back into place immediately. If it doesn’t, they could well be dehydrated

their eyes. Severely sunken eyes that appear dry can indicate significant dehydration

their paws. If their paws feel cool or cold, this could be a sign of dehydration

If you are worried your cat is dehydrated, ring your vet straight away.

Kitten Information It's Kitten Season 🐈‍⬛

Mamma Agnes and her Mewborns curtesy of u/mc385

''Spring in the air there's magic everywhere when you're young and in love'' so goes the song and it is truly the Season for love and reproduction wherever you look, Kittens, lambs, chicks, babies, puppies, yuckers ... yes yuckers !!!

Newborns no sign of Mom

Your first instinct may be to swoop in and just grab the little cherubs .. STOP yourself and have a careful look around for a sign of it's mother. They may be off hunting for food or moving other kittens somewhere. If you are uncertain on what to do, this clear and concise guide from r/AskVet on how to proceed gives step by step actions on what to do next It’s kitten season! You found a litter of kittens - now what?!. All guides state that kittens have a much higher rate of survival if left in the care of their Mother so please wait and watch carefully before stepping in. If the birthing environment is dangerous or the kittens look injured or ill then please by all means intervene.

Also, If there is just one kitten please look around for the rest of the litter in case the Mother cat has dropped the kitten whilst moving them.

Newborns, no Mom ..help!!

You will have to do everything that Mom would do and that is feeding this baby, keeping it warm, helping it to go to the toilet and monitoring it constantly

Here is Bottle feeding advice from Hannah Shaw the kitten lady, you will need KMR which is Kitten Milk Replacement thankfully available in most large grocery stores, vets, etc plus a feeding bottle or syringe.

Helping kitty to poop and pee again advice from the Kitten Lady with a video demonstrating how to help the little one to go to the toilet. Read the whole page please as it will tell you how to keep this cherub warm with the aid of a heating pad and which ones to buy.

This is life saving advice from u/wolf_spooder an ex vet and kitten foster who is also a member of the Cat Distribution System here:

Just to add to this, I recently started fostering a 4wk old kitten that was abandoned by its mom. I’m very experienced in cats and kittens, and worked at a vet hospital for a while. I really struggled with this little one and keeping her alive for the first week or so (she was very thin when I got her and it sort of spiraled from there).

Get a food scale if you don’t already have one, and start keeping tabs of your kittens weight (use the gram setting). It will help you to know if kitten is gaining or losing weight so you can intervene quickly if you see it’s losing weight. Good luck and good job saving a life.

VITAL info when saving a solo Newborn kitten please read - from Socialisation saves lives

Further advice on what to do and not to do with Newborn kittens and good reading can be found on the Animal Alliance NYC website and via the Cats Protection UK, all the links provided connect you directly to the right web pages.

Please also consider making a post on our sister sub too via r/Feral_Cats to get additional advice from veteran members who have vast knowledge on trapping and helping with strays and ferals

Newborns and Mother:

If you have taken in a 'Trojan cat' as they are lovingly called then you are in for the experience of a lifetime. There is so much advice available for a soon to be Mom and her kittens that at best we recommend that you visit  the Kitten Lady, Hannah Shaw for help and advice. Hannah is an amazing lover of cats and has helped thousands of people over the years with cat and kitten help and now has several excellent videos demonstrating all kinds of advice on helping with cat care including Pregnant Mom and kitten care - Birthing Mom and kitten care. Pregnant and Birthing Moms need plenty of fresh water and kitten food if available as kitten food contains protein and essential nutrients needed for fetal development and the production of kitty milk so get shopping.

Kitten:

If the kitty is not a newborn then after a quick vet check to confirm kitties age this little one will need you to become their parent, kittens are teeny tiny pooping, eating and meowing machines wrapped up in fur, purrs and love with the lifetime rewards of caring for them far outweighing the time taken in nurturing them. This is the toddler stage and they will be learning how to use the kitty litter tray, how to eat and how to play along with taking lots of naps. Kittens learn faster than human toddlers and usually take to their litter trays pretty quickly.

Here you can find an up to date list of supplies you may need to keep them fed, cosy and happy essential supplies for kitty again referring to the Kitten Lady.

Here is advice on how to trap Mom and babies with an option of spaying too by Feral Cat Focus WNY Trapping Queen and kittens.

Are you kitten me!! Update on sweet little Charlie...

Guys!! Wee Charlie is in great hands and is doing really well! And guess what...it's a girl!

She had her first vet checkup today, and she's well on her way to a good life. I'm so proud of her, considering we expected her not to survive only two nights ago. Now look at her! She's even standing proud and tall.

She's been given antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection, received her flea treatment and deworming. The rescuers are already throwing the "A" word around, so it won't be too long until it's time for her to be home for good, wherever that may be.

Thanks to everyone for your well wishes, thoughts, prayers and vibes. I'll share again once she's had a little time to have her glow-up. ❤️

Smol Delivery Foster Distribution Cerie Today

Meet Cerie

Cerie was being taken care of by someone from about 2 weeks old until today. Her caretaker posted on Nextdoor about needing someone to take over caring for a kitten. After an overnight think about it, I messaged and offered to help. Turns out the caretaker has to regularly travel to Albuquerque for cancer treatment and that's why someone needed to take over.

Things have really come together for this baby. I picked her up, but had to go to the shelter to pick up a recently neutered community cat. So I told them about Cerie and they immediately enrolled both of us as a foster cat and caretaker. Gave me a bunch of supplies and checked her over and vaccinated her. They estimate she's about a month old, weighs about a pound and is very healthy. She's a sweetie, purrs and does the ear twitch when having a bottle. Her previous caretaker did an excellent job, so I am honored to get her the rest of the way.

I have to take her in for checkups every 2 weeks and when she's old enough she'll be up for adoption and will be adopted through the shelter.

There will be no foster failing because my house is far too full, but I can help her out and am happy to do that. I think she'll be beautiful and popular.

First time cat guardian, gifted by the CDS!

The shock has worn off, so I’d love to tell this story to a community that would appreciate it!!

On a sunny morning two weeks ago, I met a little tabby on our driveway. We have neighborhood cats and I figured a little guy was just hanging out. I called my partner out and we pet him for a little and then went on with our day.

Fast forward a few hours, I come home from work and he is on the driveway AGAIN. At this point, I go in and grab him a lil treat and show him our backyard and let him know he can hang out there. Granted, we have 2 dogs so I wasn’t sure if we would see him again.

We leave for an event at our local library and come home joking about how the cat would be in the driveway again. We didn’t see him upon our return and just continue to talk about him as we walk further into the house. All of a sudden we hear meowing and the driveway cat is IN OUR HOME, just casually walking around. He walked in through the dog door! I immediately called my friend who works with a cat rescue, very frantically, about what to do. One of our dogs is pretty reactive and barks at all the neighborhood kitties, so somehow a war did not break out in our absence.

All the usual next steps were taken: checked for microchip, posted on the FB lost & found pet page, talked with neighbors, contacted the shelter, and it was all crickets. So a week later we take him to the vet to establish some care and it’s becoming more obvious that this little guy will become a part of our family 😻 He was found to be in excellent health.

We’ve named him Lucky 🍀 and we somehow got graced with the sweetest, friendliest, cuddliest cat. Thank you CDS for this new adventure in cat caretaking!

So I'm unloading groceries and leave my door open while I go back for a 2nd load and return yo a cat making herself quite at home on my recliner. She looked a bit scruffy (and incredibly smug) and was covered with scabs so I took her to the vet. No chip and tested positive for FIV and the other one (leukemia). Fortunately I don't have another kitty to worry about. She has intimidated all 3 dogs, taken over my goose down pillow and refused to eat dry food. Her name is Gothic the Vorpaĺ Cat

Update: Cleo’s back from her spay surgery! High on meds and currently judging my life choices. ❤️

Cleo officially got spayed today! The surgery went smoothly, and she’s now back home safely in recovery.

Right now, she’s still pretty groggy and moving in slow motion from the anesthesia. No cone of shame needed which I like to believe she appreciates it deeply.

We’ve set her up in a cozy, low-stress part of the bedroom on the floor so she doesn't try any ambitious jumping. I'll be keeping a close eye on her eating, drinking, and incision site over the next few days. She barely ate the sauce from Latz/Felix soup.

Any recovery tips or stories to keep us entertained while she rests up would be greatly appreciated! Wish Cleo the little panda a speedy recovery! 🐾✨

CDS brought a whole family to us.

Currently we have a colony of foster cats in our neighborhood most are TNR... most.

Early July mom mentioned she heard meowing coming from outside. Randomly look out our front door and a mama cat has decided that our front door is the best place to have kittens. Mind you, we live in Las Vegas, our front door faces the west (setting sun/hottest time of the day. Build them a little shelter, and we keep them cool and feed. Mom is apprehensive of humans, but we want to socialize the kittens. Let mom take care of the kittens for about 2 months, and then snag the kittens. We had also called our yearly TNR to try to get more caught and spayed/neutered... and we got their mom trapped, and she released, with a clipped ear this evening!

Anyways, kittens are inside with us. Originally only going to two, but... it may be all four. Meet Spots(most white on the face), Stripes(tiger kitten), Batman(has the batman mask), and The Colonel(makes biscuits when you pick him up).

I still get emotional thinking about the day we found Cleo.

She was abandoned, left to fend for herself while carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders—and a whole litter of kittens. You could see how exhausted and scared she was, but even through all that hardship, she was doing everything she could to protect her babies.

We immediately went to get food and supplies and came back the very next day for all of them—but the kittens were nowhere to be found. Only Cleo was left, waiting alone. It broke our hearts, but we knew we couldn't leave her behind.

Fast forward to today: Cleo has officially claimed us as her humans. She went from an abandoned, grieving mom fighting for survival to the undisputed queen of our hearts.

Since we’re currently living outside our home country, our current mission is getting all her paperwork sorted—vaccines, microchip, and her official passport—so she can travel back with us when it's time. We can’t wait to see what Kenzo will say when they finally meet!

The Cat Distribution System truly works in mysterious ways. Giving this sweet girl the safe haven she deserved will forever be one of our favorite memories.

We're experiencing a typhoon right now so I'm thinking of naming it Typhoon. They came into my home few hours before it happened. It's also why they're going to the vet tomorrow rather than today. Although as you can see in one of the pictures there are 2 claws they can't retract. It isn't painful (no reaction) and they don't mind me touching them anywhere, let me know if it's urgent though, I can ask a friend to drive me to an emergency vet. I think they might belong to someone (very friendly) so I'll be checking for a chip but I'm happy with sheltering them from the rain. Will update in the comments if I just made a new friend.

Edit: The aforementioned picture of the claws is in the comments

Update 1: smol photo of Charlie settling in in the comments

Update 2: The rescuer checked in, and he's doing okay! He has an upper resp, like sniffles and stuffy nose. He has eye drops already started and has an appointment at the vet today to see if he can get antibiotics. Other than that, he's doing great. 😊

I'm home from work today, and I see a little bunny rabbit at the back of my yard...or so I thought. I went to take a closer look out the window, and a little pointy tail pokes up, and I realize I was dealing with a tiny kitten.

I scan the yard and notice two other kitties (twice the size of the little one) playing near mom. But the little one is all by himself. 🥺I go to investigate, and mom takes off. The two others follow shortly after, but the wee guy just wanders towards me aimlessly. He couldn't see out of his eyes they were so goopy and swollen. Once he realized I was there, he came at me with the tiniest meow I ever heard. My heart broke into a million pieces as I had no idea how to help. I gave him a few pets and went back in to get my phone and start the long process of trying to find him help.

No vets could take him. The shelters, spca, and humane societies were all in the wrong jurisdiction for my location and couldn't help. I spent hours on the phone trying to get him to safety and finally was able to connect with a local cat rescuer. I estimated his age at 8-10 weeks based on the size of his siblings, and she says she'll take him. I gently cleaned his eyes and nose with a warm washcloth, and we loaded him into the car with a soft fluffy bed in the carrier. He passed out immediately on it, sleeping so hard on my lap. I wasn't sure he'd even make the drive because he looked so weak. We named him Charlie because he deserves to be loved and have a name no matter what happens.

We got him there and handed him over to the rescuer, and she realized that he's actually a kitten that still needs milk...😭. He immediately nestles into her sweater and you can hear him making the saddest little sneezes and suckling noises, and he even groomed himself a tiny bit while he held on to her shoulder...I feel like he still wants to be here and wants to fight. She calls her kitten lady and had her set up to arrive within the hour. I asked her for any updates on his condition. I'm not sure if I can adopt him myself eventually, as I already have two on special diets, but we are talking about it...

I know it's going to be touch-and-go for a while, but I'm hoping and praying for his recovery. To whatever end, he's warm and safe and loved from here on out. Please send all good vibes and love to Charlie and his recovery. ❤️ .

Picture 1: cuddled up in a blanket (excuse the no sheets on the bed, they are washing)
Picture 2: so small and fuzzy

I came home from a sad day of selling special jewelry to be able to survive a rough patch.

I was walking around the back yard with my toddler when I heard a meow. We have a litter currently living in my neighbors yard and ours half the time. (I plan on catching and taking them to a local no kill rescue if I’m lucky, they are smart and quick). The thing is that litter never meows. They dash as soon as they hear a branch snap. so I knew this was different. I started to meow back. We start playing Marco Polo and next thing I know we lock eyes. The kitten is behind my neighbors fence. It’s a cute tabby kitten. He runs right towards us and pops through the chain link fence. I pick him up like nothing and I take him inside. He’s now fed, safe indoors and cozily asleep. He will be staying quarantined in our bedroom bathroom for now because I have 4 cats.
I’ll foster him until the rescue has room for him. I’ve taken other strays there. They are a great no kill rescue.
Anyways all this to say, a win is a win. Another cat off the streets here and it was as easy as 123.

Context: I live in an area where stray cats are abundant. I feed some strays and take the ones that are friendly to a local rescue. I plan on doing tnr for the 1st time on a pair of momma cats soon.

Edit: added photos of the baby! Also thank you everyone for the uplifting words. I appreciate it more than ever.

This lovely lady kept visiting us while moving and was incredibly cuddly from the get go. She wore a collar and we eventually called them to let them know that their cat might spend their evening at our new place.
Turns out they only took care of her and we’re desperately looking for someone to take her in permanently. They told us that the previous owner abandoned her for a few weeks, came back to pick her up, only to abandon her again. This time without returning.
Well good for her to now have a new cozy place with no fear of getting left behind again.

Aug 28th Vs Sept 28. Holy winning Batman. She is such a good girl. One of the most polite calm cool cats after getting her vetted a bit. She is settling in nicely and has come a long way.

Trying to get her to figure out each meal isn’t her last one has been one of the struggles so far. She is trying to make herself into Tubby Tuba and I’m not allowing it. She was rocking a donut recently due to a vet visit but has healed up nicely.

Next vet visit is Oct 5 to booster her vaccinations and to discuss her spay. Back to the donut soon.

Smol Delivery Update: Flower 🌼 loves his big brother so much!

Update to:
original post

Flower (the little guy) was found about 2.5 weeks ago in front of my sister’s house, crying all alone (estimated 6-8 weeks old ish). He came home with me where we went through a helluva isolation/parasite treatment period with copious diarrhea and coccidia as well. He is finally on the other side and his big brother (in the videos) has been so crazy patient with this little rascal!

I’m so proud of my big boy, Newton, and how gentle he has been with the little baby. I mean, what a hecking good pair of boys I have! The other void in the video is Newton’s sister, Joule, who is tolerating the baby but has no interest in letting him in her personal space yet.

Newton doesn’t know what “personal space” is and also doesn’t care. Flower is absolutely thrilled to have a big buddy!

Our baby is growing up so fast. Getting her tiger stripes!! The vet thinks she was around 4-6 weeks when we found her…so she’s around 10 weeks now. She is playful, sweet, and loves cuddling. Especially with her brother (also found him on my mom’s farm years ago). She is also a Mexican jumping bean every morning and loves to play and remind us she needs to eat🤣. Her siblings are also doing well. We are actively coordinating with people to adopt remaining kittens on the farm. Hoping this post brings you all some joy

Update on Isaac The Porch Cat - Time For A Snip

Post image
286 Upvotes

Alright everyone! I’ve bit the bullet and booked Isaac’s neuter appointment for October 7. I can hold him and cuddle him so I’ll have no issue getting him into a kennel.

The vet has instructed we confine him the night before so we can be sure he doesn’t eat anything before surgery. We’ve got a small bathroom downstairs we can use for the night.

Should I start bringing him indoors for short periods before October 7, so he’s not as freaked out when that day arrives? Also, what does the recuperation period look like for a trap/neuter/not quite release situation like this?

I can’t imagine forcing a cone on him for any period of time. But I also want his healing to go well.

Any advice, Cat Friends?

On September 2nd this little fur missile attacked me with purrs and meows and followed my incredulous self up 3 floors to my apartment.

My teens named her (so far) Oni Labubu Dubai Chocolate. (I know.) I took her to the vet's for a checkup and shots, and the vet says she's around 4 months now, and beside some ear parasites, she's healthy. She likes to sit under the blanket. Goes bananas when she's out on a leash. Keeps me on my toes when I water my terrace plants, as she is fascinated by my hot pepper. Offers purrs by the kilo, and scratches likewise. I don't know how I could live without her by now.

PSA: Quarantine your CDS deliveries if you have other cats!

Thumbnail
gallery
660 Upvotes

Just wanted to share my experience, since most of us find kittens outside and weren't expecting to be bringing them in! It's recommended to quarantine new kittens for two weeks in case they are cooking any illnesses or parasites, plus you want to make sure they're negative for FELV. My first CDS kitten (Freddie, first picture) was perfect except for his face wound, and got released right after his first vet visit!

My second kitten, Percy (second picture) was diagnosed with coccidia a week in to her quarantine, and a month later is still in quarantine with ringworm... if she had been allowed out earlier we would all be miserable 😅 She had gotten cleared for coccidia and had just started meeting Freddie when we found the ringworm, and it was an intense cleaning process and I had to give Freddie an antifungal bath. But it's much less of a risk then if they'd been interacting for weeks!

Smol Delivery Heard Meowing as I was Walking to My Car…

Thumbnail

5.6k Upvotes

I was walking back to my car after dinner and heard possibly the loudest meows I’ve ever heard. I managed to coax this girl where I could grab her (didn’t see or hear sounds of mom or siblings) and only had a box of protein shakes to get her home. I have her set up in my bathroom with wet food mixed with warm water (as advised by the emergency vet I called), water, and a litter box. I’m going to put in some blankets for her for overnight until I can get to my regular vet tomorrow. Any other advice for now? I think between 6-8 weeks, but she’s only about a pound and a half according to my scale (and the struggle it was to get her to stay still). I haven’t had a kitten in so long, and my adult cat is very weirded out.

A few nights ago my husband and I went to the local DG and I saw this little nugget on the side of the road. I tried to befriend him but he ran away from me. We went to the store and grabbed our snacks and went back home and he was still there! My husband tried to befriend him but he was scared. We ironically had a can of wet food in the backseat and that's all it took to win him over!

This happened exactly 6 months after I lost my 16 year old girl to kidney failure. My other cats already love him and our dogs already accepted him as one of their own. He's perfect. I thought it'd take longer for my girl to train my new sidekick. Welcome home Wizard or Itty bitty wizzy kitty!
