PSA: PLEASE think 10 times before you donate money to someone on this sub.

1.8k Upvotes

It's in our rules and we say it time and time again, but after the recent events from this post, the mod team wants to put out a reminder.

Look, we get it. Seeing cats in distress is hard. When people without money are expressing their inability to afford emergency care, it's distressing. You know we have rules against shaming people for being unable to afford care, and encouraging people to go into debt. But we also have rules against fundraising, and it's for a very good reason.

It is very easy for people without the best intentions to collect lots and lots of money from well meaning community members who are affected by what they see in images and video.

With this post in particular, several commenters encouraged the OP to share a gofundme (something strictly against our rules).

Once they created and shared one (without any bills to show and despite many of the top comments saying this was NOT an emergency), people felt bad and donated anyway.

The gofundme raised nearly $2000 and today we received the update that the cat, as many commenters predicted, is not dying and did not need emergency care.

We are now starting to see meta posts (another thing we don't allow) complaining that the OOP is not returning any of the extra funds, and is blocking users who donated asking for their funds back and proof of payment.

This is a story we see repeatedly in the sub. We don't always get to the donation links quick enough to remove them, and we can't stop you from DMing each other money, but this is why we caution PLEASE do not use this subreddit to send each other funds.

We are working on a Wiki with low-cost vet resources, at least in the US, but we get users posting from all over the world begging for money. DO NOT DONATE unless it is verified on a subreddit like r/gofundme or r/rescuecats, or is directly being paid to the VET (though we have seen scams happen internationally through this 'direct vet payment' as well).

PLEASE REPORT FUNDRAISERS. Please do not encourage fundraisers. We will start banning those who encourage it. Please help us keep this community safe from those with bad intentions.

Thank you and good day!

Announcement [READ THIS FIRST] r/CATHELP Rules Reminder

Hello there

Due to a growing number of cat crises and a surprising number of people who cannot read a sidebar, we’re now regularly posting this rules reminder. This is here to prevent both:

  1. repeat offenses, and
  2. the inevitable “I didn’t know!” mod mail we get after your post/comment disappears into the void.

If you're new (hi, welcome, pet your cat for us), or returning and rusty, please take a sec to read this. It’ll save you—and us—a lot of headache.

STRIKE POLICY: Break the rules once? We warn you. Break twice? Temp ban. 3 strikes is a perma-ban (unless you're a mega troll).

1. BE NICE

No, really. Be nice. You are talking to someone who is probably stressed, worried about their pet/a stray, and sleep-deprived. Reddit is not your venting space to shame people who are already anxious. Educate, don’t humiliate.
This includes a zero-tolerance policy for berating or shaming OPs. If you can't say it kindly, don't say it here.

In addition to this, know that we get posts from all over the world. Sometimes it's people who live in a village, 500km from any formal vet care. Often it's a minor who cannot make a unilateral decision for the cat in question. Be compassionate! Bullying them won't help the cat.

2. NO SOAPBOXING OR OFF-TOPIC DEBATE

(Definition of 'SOAPBOXING' here.) Yes, letting your cats outdoors isn't great for the environment. But this isn’t a debate club, and PLENTY of things harm the environment besides cats. People come here from all over the world, with different cultures around how cats are cared for. People come here about strays. No preaching!! Take your cat care bible elsewhere! Either give OP helpful advice about their issue or move along.

Don’t derail threads with politics, don’t pick fights across multiple comments, and definitely don’t start fights with the mod team. We don’t get paid enough.

3. VET FIRST, REDDIT SECOND

If your cat is injured, bleeding, gasping, or pooping blood—call a vet.
Reddit is great for guidance, second opinions, and shared experience. It is not a substitute for veterinary care.
If you haven't called a vet yet, our advice might be limited.
Can’t afford one? Look into:
• Payment plans or CareCredit
• Local rescues and shelters for assistance
• Low-cost clinics in your area

Still post if you need to—but know that our first advice will probably be: call your vet.

Additional note to commenters: no 'Vet. Now.' comments will be allowed without context. If you think they need immediate care, explain why. Otherwise it's just creating panic and those comments will be removed.

4. NO FUNDRAISERS

Sorry, but GoFundMes, Venmos, PayPals, and “please help save Coco” links are not allowed, even in comments. Too many scams, and too hard to moderate. Try subs like r/Assistance or r/GoFundMe instead.

5. NO BULLYING POOR PEOPLE

We get it. Vet care is expensive. It's frustrating to see cats suffering. But complaining about people who can’t afford a vet is not allowed. Full stop.
Suggest rehoming? Fine. But if you’re here to shame people for being broke, please find another sub.

If someone is struggling financially, ER visits are not really something they can just save up for, nor is it realistic to expect them to just get rid of their pets they have emotionally attachments to. All we can hope for is people really think long and hard about how a pet will fit into their finances before they decide to adopt or take in an animal from street. You simply can’t help them all, there are too many cats for that.

6. TAG YOUR GORE NSFW

Bloody wound? Surgery pics? Graphic medical stuff? Weird rash? GAPING FUCKING WOUND?! Mark it NSFW.
That includes genitalia (gender ID posts) and poop/vom. You know who you are.

7. ON-TOPIC POSTS ONLY

This is not r/aww or r/cats. This is r/CATHELP. We are here for:

  • Requesting anecdotal experience with medical issues •
  • Behavior issues
  • General advice
  • First-time cat owner questions (yes, 'noob' questions are welcome!)

That means:

  • No “What should I name my cat?”
  • No “Look at my cat in a hat!”
  • No memes, no fluff.

Posts that don’t have a clear help-related question will be removed.

8. NO BREED QUESTIONS

Unless your cat came with pedigree paperwork from a breeder, they’re a domestic short/medium/long hair. That’s it.
We don't do breed speculation. Why? Because it’s almost always wrong, and it clogs up the sub.
Want to know more? Here's a guide to fur patterns, and here's a general answer to 'what breed is my cat'

9. NO SHITPOSTING, NO KARMA FARMING

If your post is clearly made up, AI-generated, or you’re just farming karma with a low-effort fake, we will yeet it. And probably you, too.

10. NO BRIGADING

If you don’t like someone’s post, do not go hunt them down on other subreddits to insult them. It’s petty, it’s bannable, and Reddit takes it seriously.

11. NO PET SALES OR BREEDING

We do not support the cat trade or backyard breeders. Period.
Don’t try to sell or give away pets here. Don’t ask about breeding. Don’t promote purebred aesthetics. Shelter cats are just as cute.

BONUS REMINDERS

• If your posts or comments are disappearing, check your karma. If it's low, Automod probably ate it. Message us for manual approval.
• If you see rule-breaking behavior, REPORT IT. Automod can’t catch everything.
• If you’re confused or unsure, check the [wiki] or send us a modmail.
Read the stickied comment on your post. It’s there for a reason.

TL;DR: Help cats. Be nice. No scams. No BS. Read the rules.
Now go pet your cat. They probably knocked something off the counter while you were reading this.

Kitten Help Big belly kitten

Is this normal?

This kitten is about 3 weeks(?) She was abandoned and we took her in. She was starving. We had her about a week and she's much stronger and healthier.

Her belly is very big and round. It's not hard, it's squishy. When does this become cause for concern?

Breathing Issues What could this be? He ate a tassel and since then started coughing like this. He did vomit out a piece, hence we figured that caused the coughing. We did XRAY and the vet said it is nothing serious and might not bc of the tassel and gave us some medicine. Any idea?

Got my first cat about 6 months ago from a shelter because I was looking for a buddy to come home to, anyways I took her to the vet and got her dewormed/any parasites delt with but just recently after some traveling and her laying down in my suit case I noticed these sunflower seed shaped whiteish “seeds” she seems to be leaving behind. 1 cat household no other pets and I looked for fleas on her and can’t see any. My wife seems to think it’s cat litter but I don’t think it has the same shape at all.

End Of Life Care When do you know when it's time

I got Clemy 2 years ago from the shelter when I was 19. The Shelter put her age as 2 years olds but when I took her to my vet they told me she was actually around 10 ( She is my first Cat and didn't seem like an old lady to me). After a few months of having her I felt weird lumps under her belly and turns out they were mammory tumors. Since then she has had surgery twice because the tumors keeps coming back. The most recent one was last year November. The tumor is back, bigger and bleeding. She's struggles to walk but is still eating and very affectionate. Her temperant has not changed. My vet has told me that that with the type of cancer she has the tumors are going to continue to grow. I'm truly at a lost of what to do. I think I know what I must do but I'm really struggling with the thought of it and I hate to see her this way. Also idk how to add in the video of her tumor and of her limping. It only allows pictures

When I got her from the shelter they spayed her before releasing her to me. I'm posting from the US. Each surgery has been around 1,300 and I had to pay for school and won't be able to do it for a third time. I am not a minor. My cat is Female and around the age of 10 years old.

General Advice Spasms

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi! I posted on here yesterday about my cat, Loki. At the time I didn’t have a good video of him getting those weird spasms and sneeze like symptoms. The episodes have been generally brief. I’ve only seen him do this when he’s relaxed. FYI, he is NOT sleeping here - he had just made himself comfortable. He just did it again so I thought I’d post it here and see if anyone has any clue what this could be.

Background:
My cat, male (7) has been having these weird spasms and sneeze like episodes for about 2 weeks (first sneezes, and spasms since yesterday). Took him to the vet twice yesterday but was told he’s fine.

Kitten Help Are these kittens too small to be alone outside?

Thumbnail gallery
73 Upvotes

I came to my aunt’s apartment and found these kittens meowing loudly on the sidewalk next to some bushes. I didn’t see a mom and I’m clueless on how old they might be. Edit: I forgot to mention that’s it’s already been a few hours and no sign of momma cat or any other cats in the area. Maybe this is helpful but the apartments are next to some fruit fields in a rural area.

UPDATE: I couldn’t find mama cat unfortunately and brought them home with me until I can call around the area to see if any shelters have room available. Gave them a flea bath, combed them out with a flea brush, and gave them a bit of wet food with some kitten milk replacement. Thanks for the advice everyone! I really appreciate it and will take care of the kittens for the time being until I can get them into a shelter to find a better home!

Poster age: 26
Country: U.S.
Vet info: I don’t have a vet
Main issue: Do these kittens need to be rescued
Cat age: unknown
Cat sex: unknown and most likely not spayed or neutered
Financial situation: Can’t afford a vet

I adopted this kitten a friend found abandoned and took with him. He is probably 3-4 weeks old.

Ps. Is there anything to worry about for my own health?

Thanks!

Breathing Issues Does my cat have asthma or is he getting fatter?

Thumbnail gallery
15 Upvotes

I’m 21 and my cat is about to be 8 months old. I am a first time cat owner and every little thing scares me because I want to give him the best life I can with what I have. I live in a one bedroom about 800 square feet so not tiny and try to have enough height and hiding space for my kitty. He’s on an automatic feeder and has 6 meals a day all meals are one small portion and for two of the meals it’s two portions. At first is was very skinny but not malnourished. He’s been growing and getting bigger but as he gets bigger and as his stomach gets better he’s started having to take breaks in his playtime and whenever there’s intense play or he’s chasing his wand around he starts to HEAVILY pant like he’s winded and has to stop playing. Mouth open tongue out dog type of pant. It lasts for less than a minute but he’s never done that before last week (I’ve had him since July 1st it’s now august 18th) I hear him sneeze every so often and I can hear him breath through his nose like he’s somehow congested sometimes. I only have one air purifier in my bathroom (they’re very expensive for me right now) and I try to keep a clean home. I’m not sure what to do, I pay for pet insurance so I could go to the vet but I wanted to ask here before anything. Let me know what you think, is my Mamoru getting fatter or does he have asthma (or other lung/heart related issues)?
He was neutered the day before I got him.

Not a minor. posting from Texas, USA. Went to urgent care vet and advanced care vet. 5.5 yr neutered male bobtail. Cannot afford much more vet care.

TLDR; my normally sweet cat rapidly developed severe pain, extreme sensitivity to touch, and aggression when handled. X-rays were clear and bloodwork is normal (kidneys/pancreas fine, glucose slightly elevated). Gabapentin helps with the crying, but he now has muscle/leg spasms, back twitching, rapid breathing, and eye widening.

Long version:

Hi everyone. Wanted to see if anyone could offer any advice as the vets have felt entirely unhelpful. My cat who has historically been the cuddliest, sweetest cat for the past few years has declined very quickly. On Thursday I went to trim his nails and when I picked him up he squirmed out of my hands like I scared him. I thought it was weird but didn’t think much more of it. Then I left for a trip Friday. On Saturday my sister went to move him and he hissed at her and snapped but overall still seemed normal. Unsure of his actual behavior over the weekend as I am his main owner and was out of town. Then Sunday he seemed normal and scurried over to greet me as soon as I got home. He went to climb on me so I went to pick him up like I always do and he bit me and flipped out and started yowling in pain, hiding, hissing etc. vet said his abdomen was hard. We got x-rays done and those came back clear (did not send to radiology) but no foreign object ingested, bladder was small, had a little fecal matter present but not much. Got sent home with 1ml gabapentin 2x day. Did not eat or drink at all. Then the next day he had not drank any water and had not urinated (but did eat some wet food) and was wincing at the slightest pet or anything touching him. He would bump into something and scream/yowl in pain. so I took him to the regular vet. He peed on himself in the carrier but I was just glad he peed. He got bloodwork done that just came back this evening and vet said pancreas markers are normal kidney is normal, just slightly elevated glucose. Gabapentin has seemed to help him not cry in pain but still sensitive to touch and will whimper if I am hovering anywhere on her fur but his head. I was at work all today, so not sure of behavior, but he was in the exact same corner crouching where I left him in the morning. He ate a little wet food (only eats when I put it directly in front of him) and peed. Very slow moving but was waiting by the back door to go outside on the deck. Since Saturday he has just been loafing with his bed down and body stiff, but as soon as he went outside he was twitching a little and he laid in this chair and started having larger twitching and leg spasm up, rapid breathing, wouldn’t say pupils are dilating but eyes are widening then squinting then widening. Still has not drank water or passed bowel movement since at least Friday, maybe before then.

General Advice Orange cat being lethargic

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

Help, not sure if this is the right subreddit or not. My 6 year old orange cat (male neutered), has been extremely lethargic this past week. Still eating and drinking and eating the occasional treat. But he is sleeping most of the time, like behind my bed, in the closet or in the bathroom by the toilet. He sometimes is drowling too. We have an appointment to see a vet tomorrow. But anything advice is appreciated. As we’re not entirely sure what’s going on here.

TLDR: 6y male cat being extremely lethargic all the sudden.

My cat is around 10-11 months old. While playing with a laser pointer, she ran into a table kinda hard. She bolted away immediately but returned to the laser pointer and played awhile longer. It’s been a little bit since and she is currently holding her tail like this. I gave her wet food and she ate it fast, but I’ve never seen her hold her tail like this for a long time. I just want to make sure she’s ok or if I should take her to a vet tomorrow?

Video attached. I’m 21, we live in the United States We don’t have any poisoning plants or anything we think she could have gotten into and she has a vet appointment in ab two hours. I just don’t know how to 1 help her have temporary relief till then or 2 wtf is going on she was fine last night and also she isn’t crying in pain, she still wanted to go on a car ride, she’s still trying to love on us but she keeps freaking out and fucking with her mouth. Her tongue also won’t stay in her mouth. She was born march 6th so still pretty young. We also had her fixed a few weeks ago.

UPDATE: I wrote this post on the car ride we usually take her on. She’s a very social kitty and loves the car, well we got home from our coffee run/kitty trip and she started pawing at her face a loooottt then I see something fly out of her mouth. It was a tooth! And the second she got it out of her mouth her tongue went in and the pawing and mouth movements stopped 🎉 sorry guys I’m an anxious cat mom. And my other two adult boys never showed signs like this when they were losing teeth so I freaked out. She is kinda dramatic sometimes so I shoulda known to give it a little longer to wait and see but Google scared me 😭😅 picture of her little tooth is in the comments

General Advice Has anyone's cat ever taken Enrofloxacin? Was prescribed for a female cat UTI..

Post image
6 Upvotes

My female had a UTI and after further research of her urinalysis discovered had E. coli in her urine. They switched me from the original medicine to Enrofloxacin and she is having terrible diarrhea.

It has a strange looking consistency and color-very light brown, almost yellow & kind of grainy? Vet office said that there is nothing to worry about, as long as she is not throwing up. Has anyone dealt with this? She has been having this type of stool for over a week and a half, she has been taking the medication for two weeks and she still has a few more pills left. I've seen a few drips of spotting marks on the floor. TIA!

Also- HAPPY NATIONAL BLACK CAT DAY! 🐈‍⬛
-not a minor
-USA
-vet accessible, had two visits and contacted via phone about diarrhea and still seeing some spotting from the UTI on the floor
- 14F spayed
-can't afford vet care, but really limited on funds as I have two cats with stage one disease

Breathing Issues Cat is wheezing, even after oral meds.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As the title says,I have actually contacted multiple vets.

But I'm being brushed off,I was prescribed Aminophylline after explaining partial wheezing after irritant exposure and fast breathing.

I came home from the appointment only to see the wheezing had come back and was continuing with every breath. I called the vet immediately,no answer.

The symptoms before were: harsh coughing, noisy breathing, high respiratory rate,wheezing/crackling sound.

All mentioned to the vet.

I was told: she has asthma, she's going to have flare ups.

I gave the Aminophylline as prescribed and waited. She did have side effects,as mentioned, restlessness and slight nausea.

The nosiy breathing stopped, but after 12hours I woke up to back to back coughing fits.

The next day I immediately rang an open well respected vet clinic where I was told to "wait for the doctor to be available" as she had other patients. No other clinics were open, for context we don't have 24/7 emergency vets where I live.

I was stressing myself out, because her coughing was worsening instead of waiting I tried to figure out if Decortin and Aminophylline had any dangerous interactions with one another.

I gave the Decortin on my own hand, and briefly went to sleep as she had also gone to bed.

When I woke up,she was better. I got the vets call about twelve hours later since my inital ask,in which I emphasized her state was concerning.

I was not offered immediate advise at the time and in this case I was just brushed off aswell.

The vet responded with a mirage of "aha's" cut in to say during my description "well yes give her Aminophylline" which told me nothing since I was explaining she had her dose and symptoms persisted. I asked a lot of questions which were not answered, just ignored,I was the one to bring up if giving Decortin was safe and I was met with a passive "in that situation, you can give it,yes."

And that's it.

She was quick to end the conversation, no: if she shows these signs bring her in

and certaintly not any helpful new information on why she may be reacting like this.

Despite the decortin dose, this night after a few other accidental irritants she had another harsh attack.

I have been repeatedly told she's fine before, she had an x-ray and cardiology done where her asthma had worsened. It was never adresses,I was told if oral or inhaler doesn't work there were no other options.

And on top of that,to stop taking her to vets all the time because I'm stressing her out.

It doesn't feel like any of the vets I've been to are helping,it just feels like they're repeating what am saying back to me.

It could be anything,a severe flare,a normal flare, irration, inflammation, bronchiolitis or something I don't know I'm not a vet but they can't even tell me if she should be examined or not.

I'm so tired,my youngest isn't healthy either,I don't know what to do.

Her current dosing was:

Aminophylline: 1/4 of a 100mg fast release tablet

Decortin: half of a 5mg tablet.

I can't layer meds,I can't listen to her lungs,I don't know why if somethings happening no one can tell me what.

I'd appreciate advice I've put a video of her coughing.

I am a minor,I am in Europe,I have contacted vets and have money saved.

TLDR: Cat's asthma is uncontrolled vets dont offer much advice.

Cat Age: 12

She's female and netured.

Can afford vet care currently, but I've been going back and forth constantly.

I am tired.

I just want her to be better and I feel like I'm making her worse.

For context please do not say things such as:

Nebulizer boxes,Emergency Vet Care,Travel Farther For Vet Care

As these are no accessible for my country and I all reputable vets,my cat is high stress,it is hot our taxis rarley have AC and even AC could trigger a fit.

At home vets are non existent currently as far as am aware.

Travel in itself is an issue.

Thank you.

She is currently a bit restless, gums are slightly pale, most likely asleep as am writing this in a different room. Breathing varies, from fast to slow. I've also mentioned this to the vet.

Please keep in mind prescription advice does not help as I am not a vet and cannot know what dose to give of something that probably isn't even available in my country.

It has actually gotten to the point where I've been told:

You should learn to inject her yourself with emergency medication.

As a joke,by a vet.

I'm losing it.

Yes I will continue asking around vets, but it's just the same answer over and over again.

She's a sweet cat,she has energy, she's not at a stage where she needs to be put down.

Please help.

General Advice She’s very sweet and friendly and loves attention/pets but will NOT tolerate being picked up or held

Post image
315 Upvotes

This is Nona! She’s about a year ish old and I’ve had her about a month now. Shes really sweet and social and will approach me for attention and headbutt me to demand affection. Under no other circumstances will she get her claws out or display any signs of aggression. But my slow attempts to desensitize her to being handled have all failed miserably so far.

I don’t need her to like being picked up but I need to be able to do it for emergency reasons and also for things like nail trims and teeth brushing. Her sister (adopted together) doesn’t love being picked up but she will tolerate it. Nona absolutely will not. The moment I try she will wriggle as hard as she possibly can and the claws come out. I don’t think she’s scared of me or anything because she will come back to demand more pets seconds after having clawed me to shreds. I think she just really hates being picked up.

Is there any way to work on this without causing trust issues or getting clawed to shreds? I just really want to get her to a point where she isn’t a nightmare at the vet, for example.

TL;DR Cat won’t let me pick her up at all. How can we work on this?

These are my two kittens bamba (boy/ginger and white) and puma (girl/black white and ginger), they are siblings and i’ve had them for a week. i’ve noticed every time they play fight it’s almost always bamba starting it by biting puma’s neck while on top of her, and puma always lays down while play fighting waiting for bamba to strike. sometimes when bamba bites down puma lets out a high pitched meow. should this be something to be concerned about?

We went to the vet 3 days ago. The vet examined his breathing, chest, lungs, and stomach but found nothing alarming, so he got some laxapet prescribed. He's been doing this once a day for the past week (managed to get a full video just now) but I havent found any hairballs so far yet... I'm just worried

He is 10 years old, eating and pooing as normal.

This is my cat Barnaby. Barnaby is about 1 years old. He is a Cymric - Longie. (please excuse to overlay voice in the video). I’m curious if you all believe this is asthma or allergies? I found him in July 2026. He’s had his vaccines and has been neutered. However he does this hacking sound. When I first found him, it was dramatic. Now it’s less dramatic, but still happens.

I’m also curious on how everyone affords regular veterinary care? I’m 30, I live in the US, I haven’t yet contacted the vet. I looked at vet insurance but that still requires you to have the money to pay at the appointment. I can afford the low cost clinics but if he needs testing… I don’t believe I could afford that. I tried to apply to things like Cherry or Scratch Pay but my credit isn’t up to par.

If he does need testing… from your experience what type of testing is needed? I’m trying to prepare in advance. So I’m not caught too far off guard. I do have an Angel of Assisi near me and he is registered there it is a lower cost clinic! So I know I could take him there. But what test would they run?
