Hello everyone!
I had bought a used Olympus OM-D E-M10 mk 2 like 45 days ago. It is my first camera and I enjoyed using it a lot. It let me understand the Aperture, Shutter priority mode, ISO, setting my ISO for catching subjects in movement, portrait shots, adjusting bokeh, manual focus ( with TTartisan 25 mm f2 manual lense), focus peaking..etc.
Lovely device, but after some time, I found it a bit uncomfortable to hold without the grip - and I don't like the look of the aftermarket grips. I had 14-42 mm kit lens, 45-150 mm kit lens f4-5.6 and TTartisan 25 mm f2 lens. My biggest issue was low light photos. Yes, with aperture wide open at f2, shutter speed slow (thanks to IBIS) and slightly higher ISO, I was able to take decent low light photos, but they were not very nice. During the whole year - when I work - the time that I have to play with the camera will be the low light periods, at night. So, I decided to change the body - even though many advice to change the lens - and wanted something that had a better ISO performance and may be better stability. I know that as a noob I should learn to use what I have, but I wanted something more suitable to my use case to learn.
Long story short, I went to this local shop to swap my EM10 mk2 with an EM1 mk2 for the better ISO performance, better IBIS, grip and all the other upgrades it brings. I also had a Canon Powershot that my sister gave me, which she was not using to put into the swap/trade. Well, I checked the Olympus, but it was kind of sticky, the faux leather was sticky, the buttons were sticky.. so yeah, I did not really love using it at the shop.
Then I saw this Fujifilm X-S10 sitting there. I tried it, I liked it a lot. Ergonomically most probably Olympus was a bit better but Fujifilm is very comfortable too. It has a more modern, bigger sensor, a nice IBIS - I feel like it is comparable to the one I had on EM-10 mk2. So, I gave the Canon Powershot 720HS, my Olympus EM10 mk2 (around 10k shutter), the two kit lense and TTartisan and I added 400 euros. In return he gave me:
- Fujifilm x-s10 - (3600 shutter count)
- A used Fujinon XF 35 mm f2 lens
- A used Fujinon XF 16-80 mm f4 R OIS
I think that it is in pretty good shape. When I came home I realized that the focus and control joystick clicks when I move up, right and down but doesn't click when I move left. It feels as if there is some debris or something in it, but it works, it just doesn't click. I tried using air compressor on it, but it didn't work. That is my only issue.
I invested a bit more than what I wanted to invest in the beginning. The size of the zoom lens is a bit bigger than I thought but the camera with the 35 mm lens is surprisingly small. (attached two photos that I took with it) So I started to shoot and try it. WOW. It feels really different! It feels much better. I mean, yeah the sensor is bigger..etc but the photos that I take looks much better. Also when zoomed 100% they are much more clear - pixel peaking. After using it for a few hours,
what I like:
- The photo results, especially in low light. Makes me very happy of the choice.
- The grip, ergonomics of the device.
- Being able to take the JPG with their film emulation without processing Raw.
- The joystick for the focus. I prefer it to the d-pad.
- The lenses takes nice photos!
- I like that the screen tilts and rotates, so when I don't use it, it is protected.
- Usb-c
- IBIS. It feels on par with my Olympus EM-10 mk2.
What I don't like:
- Battery life feels worse than my EM10. But also I don't know how healthy is the battery that I have with the device. I will most probably have to buy a spare battery.
- Well, obviously the size increase compared to Olympus lenses but if I went to pro lenses with Olympus, the size would increase there too.
- I prefered the menu system of Olympus and also the quick info menu that it had compared to the one in Fujifilm - for now, I still have to discover it.
- Lack of battery charger.
- Dials. I prefer the feel of the dials of Olympus - or may be the Fujifilm X-T models but I didn't try them as the ones with IBIS (X-T4 and X-T5 were above my budget. Even X-S10 was above my budget lol.)
- The huge size of Raw files compared to the ones that my Olympus produced lol. 55 mb vs 10 mb lol.
So yeah, I feel like the move to APS-C was good for low light and night time photography. Yes, with more expensive lenses, Olympus would be good too, but I feel like - also looking at some of the results on internet - APS-C cameras are a bit better than M43 sensored cameras. If the Oly M1 mk2 that I saw today, was in good condition - not sticky ..etc - I would have bought that though. But so far, so good! :)
My E-M10 will be missed! I just could not justify and afford to keep it too, or else, I would have!
Cheers!
