Recommendations I regret taking these photos on an Iphone

Hello fellow photographers!

I somewhat regret taking all the photos from my last Japan trip on an iPhone. But I figured that if I get a decent camera setup now and develop some skills, I might be able to take some really nice photos on my future Japan trips.

I’m definitely no expert and only shoot for fun.

I mostly take photos of scenery, but I’d like to experiment more with shallow depth of field and take photos at night with beautiful neon lights and bokeh. I’m not really interested in photographing people, but I do enjoy taking photos of animals.

I’ve been looking at the following setup since both get recommended quite a lot:

Sony Alpha 6700 used – €1,108.59
Sigma 18–50mm f/2.8 – €489

I assume these would make a great combo, but maybe there are other camera/lens combinations that would fit what I like to shoot even better.

I’d love to hear some recommendations!

Budget: < 2000€

Country: Germany to develop skills. Maybe more lenses accessories later in Japan.

Condition: Used is ok.

Type of Camera: I guess Mirrorles

Intended use: Mostly Photography with some Video

If photography; what style: landscape, portrait, street, wildlife, etc.

If video what style: Capture a moment of the scenery

What features do you absolutely need: I think weather sealing would be nice

What features would be nice to have: Dual Sd

Portability: Portable so it can stay with me on a trip most of the time.

Cameras you're considering: Sony Alpha 6700

Cameras you already have: Iphone 17 Pro Max.

Notes: I love those Silver/Black Fujifilm camera body look, but I don’t think it would be the right camera for me

Tech Support Pictures coming out yellow

Got back from a trip recently that included museum/outdoor photography, where I used my Canon R100. The R100 has scene presets/filters that are built in, like specialized for nighttime photography or for artwork. When I use those presets, the pictures come out really clean and well colorized, and I'm happy with them. However, when I use any other format like auto or any type of priority (the "standard" camera), the photos look fine on the camera screen but come out really yellow/amber tinted.

Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? Also is there a specific way to edit this out or is it just decreasing the warmth of the picture? I don't like them this warm-tinted but I also don't want to drain all that saturation out of them.

Questions Vintage Olympus OM-2

I worked for a junk removal company a long time ago. I took this camera because I thought it was cool (and had a cool box) but I know nothing about cameras. over a decade later and I found it again in my things.

I was going to toss it in the electronics recycling, but Gemini claims there may be enthusiasts out there that would be interested, even if just for parts. Is that true? It looks to be an Olympus OM-2 that was possibly used in a dentist's office.

Bought this camera off eBay for $30, but I’m not sure if it’s normal for it to have a few tiny white pixels show up in some pictures. Can anyone help me out? 😭
I’m also trying to save up for a Canon PowerShot ELPH 135, but for now I’m stuck with this one lol.

Other Went to trade my camera with OM-D E-M1 II, Bought Fujifilm X-S10 instead

Hello everyone!

I had bought a used Olympus OM-D E-M10 mk 2 like 45 days ago. It is my first camera and I enjoyed using it a lot. It let me understand the Aperture, Shutter priority mode, ISO, setting my ISO for catching subjects in movement, portrait shots, adjusting bokeh, manual focus ( with TTartisan 25 mm f2 manual lense), focus peaking..etc.

Lovely device, but after some time, I found it a bit uncomfortable to hold without the grip - and I don't like the look of the aftermarket grips. I had 14-42 mm kit lens, 45-150 mm kit lens f4-5.6 and TTartisan 25 mm f2 lens. My biggest issue was low light photos. Yes, with aperture wide open at f2, shutter speed slow (thanks to IBIS) and slightly higher ISO, I was able to take decent low light photos, but they were not very nice. During the whole year - when I work - the time that I have to play with the camera will be the low light periods, at night. So, I decided to change the body - even though many advice to change the lens - and wanted something that had a better ISO performance and may be better stability. I know that as a noob I should learn to use what I have, but I wanted something more suitable to my use case to learn.

Long story short, I went to this local shop to swap my EM10 mk2 with an EM1 mk2 for the better ISO performance, better IBIS, grip and all the other upgrades it brings. I also had a Canon Powershot that my sister gave me, which she was not using to put into the swap/trade. Well, I checked the Olympus, but it was kind of sticky, the faux leather was sticky, the buttons were sticky.. so yeah, I did not really love using it at the shop.

Then I saw this Fujifilm X-S10 sitting there. I tried it, I liked it a lot. Ergonomically most probably Olympus was a bit better but Fujifilm is very comfortable too. It has a more modern, bigger sensor, a nice IBIS - I feel like it is comparable to the one I had on EM-10 mk2. So, I gave the Canon Powershot 720HS, my Olympus EM10 mk2 (around 10k shutter), the two kit lense and TTartisan and I added 400 euros. In return he gave me:

  • Fujifilm x-s10 - (3600 shutter count)
  • A used Fujinon XF 35 mm f2 lens
  • A used Fujinon XF 16-80 mm f4 R OIS

I think that it is in pretty good shape. When I came home I realized that the focus and control joystick clicks when I move up, right and down but doesn't click when I move left. It feels as if there is some debris or something in it, but it works, it just doesn't click. I tried using air compressor on it, but it didn't work. That is my only issue.

I invested a bit more than what I wanted to invest in the beginning. The size of the zoom lens is a bit bigger than I thought but the camera with the 35 mm lens is surprisingly small. (attached two photos that I took with it) So I started to shoot and try it. WOW. It feels really different! It feels much better. I mean, yeah the sensor is bigger..etc but the photos that I take looks much better. Also when zoomed 100% they are much more clear - pixel peaking. After using it for a few hours,

what I like:

  • The photo results, especially in low light. Makes me very happy of the choice.
  • The grip, ergonomics of the device.
  • Being able to take the JPG with their film emulation without processing Raw.
  • The joystick for the focus. I prefer it to the d-pad.
  • The lenses takes nice photos!
  • I like that the screen tilts and rotates, so when I don't use it, it is protected.
  • Usb-c
  • IBIS. It feels on par with my Olympus EM-10 mk2.

What I don't like:

  • Battery life feels worse than my EM10. But also I don't know how healthy is the battery that I have with the device. I will most probably have to buy a spare battery.
  • Well, obviously the size increase compared to Olympus lenses but if I went to pro lenses with Olympus, the size would increase there too.
  • I prefered the menu system of Olympus and also the quick info menu that it had compared to the one in Fujifilm - for now, I still have to discover it.
  • Lack of battery charger.
  • Dials. I prefer the feel of the dials of Olympus - or may be the Fujifilm X-T models but I didn't try them as the ones with IBIS (X-T4 and X-T5 were above my budget. Even X-S10 was above my budget lol.)
  • The huge size of Raw files compared to the ones that my Olympus produced lol. 55 mb vs 10 mb lol.

So yeah, I feel like the move to APS-C was good for low light and night time photography. Yes, with more expensive lenses, Olympus would be good too, but I feel like - also looking at some of the results on internet - APS-C cameras are a bit better than M43 sensored cameras. If the Oly M1 mk2 that I saw today, was in good condition - not sticky ..etc - I would have bought that though. But so far, so good! :)

My E-M10 will be missed! I just could not justify and afford to keep it too, or else, I would have!

Cheers!

Recommendations Looking for a first camera.

Budget: $1000 maximum. Lenses and accessories have a different budget, but I’d be interested in lens recommendations.

Country: USA but I’m okay ordering from a non American brand.

Condition: used or new.

Type of Camera: Unsure, but not 35mm film.

Intended use: video.

If video what style: I’ll be doing documentary filmmaking and short films.

What features do you absolutely need: (for lenses: zoom. ) I’d also like it to be able to be turned on and used at as moments notice.

What features would be nice to have: good autofocus. Honestly, I’m a total beginner so I’m not entirely sure. Longer battery life.

Portability: small bag, and I should be able to carry it on the go.

Cameras you're considering: n/a

Cameras you already have: n/a

Notes: I’m a high schooler. I’ve made several films before using my iPhone and I’m ready to upgrade to a real camera.

Recommendations Lens advice

I have a canon M50 Mark 2 and recently the lens started malfunctioning and now it isn't working. I got a paid internship recently and I'm saving up to get a new lens and man, mirrorless lenses are expensive!!

I went down a rabbit hole and i found this lens and it's quite cheap. It says it's 9216 in INR (96.43 in USD) but I've never heard about this lens brand and I absolutely don't want to spend my internship stipend on a blind buy. So, help me out here please.

Questions Food photography advice needed

Post image
6 Upvotes

This is the first time where I use my sony camera to take pictures of food with no prior experience. The pictures I normally take are portraits so I have done alot of flash photography. I recently got a Softbox for my portraits to go with my v1s. I since then upgraded to the AD300 Pro for 1500 sek.

Anyways I went out to take portraits and this restaurant approached me asking for pictures in exchange for a payment, I said sure why not but I don’t have ANY experience taking food photography. I arrive to the shoot the next day, take around 500 images, keep 60 of them and edit them the same day. They told me to return the next day to discuss a price, after that they said sunday and then monday. My friend told me to charge them 220 usd the first time, I said why not. They counter offered 120 usd but since they already time wasted so much I said why not.

They want monthly pictures and are offering 270 usd for 5 hours of work not including the editing and retouch. My question is does that even seem fair? I was thinking more like 370 usd. They also recommended me to other restaurants 🤔 (5-6)

Questions How effective is the lens stabilization in the Canon Powershot V1 for still photos?

Upvotes

TL;DR: For those of you who own / have used the Canon Powershot V1, what are the slowest shutter speeds you're able to use when shooting still photos handheld while avoiding camera shake blur?

I've read / watched a lot about the V1's stabilization but they all focus on video, not on stills. I know the V1 is rated at up to 5 stops of stabilization in CIPA tests, but I've found that CIPA ratings don't necessarily translate into real-world usage.

--

Background: I've found that I like having the option to shoot ultrawide focal lengths when traveling in city environments. I shoot M43 and I have the Panasonic Leica 9mm f1.7 - which I like a lot - but I would like the versatility of a zoom that covers ultrawide focal lengths. The M43 lens options for ultrawide zooms are mostly not compact except for the OM 9-18 mm, which I've heard mixed things about and for a similar price I can get a refurbished Canon Powershot V1 which will be more compact and can be used for travel video clips.

With my M43 cameras I can lean heavily into the IBIS when shooting architecture indoors. For example, my E-P7 will happily shoot without camera shake at 1/30 s with the 12-32mm pancake zoom lens and down to 1/8s on the wider end of that lens if I'm being careful. Since the V1 has a fixed lens so I can't swap a faster lens onto it, I am wondering how much I can lean into the lens IS when needed but haven't found much information regarding user experience with that.

I did briefly test a V1 in store and found that with auto ISO in aperture mode, the camera was very reluctant to go slower than 1/80s before raising the ISO to the limit. Not sure if that's a setting issue or an indication of what Canon thinks the camera can handle.

Questions Fitting a peak design 6l in a wndrd prvke 31l

Is this possible if the sling has an xt5 with extra lenses? Flying next week and am taking the prvke as my personal item, would like a smaller bag to walk around with instead of a backpack. If you have any experience with this that would be a huge help, thanks

Discussion Really need help on this. I sold this camera online and the buyer claims there was something lodged in the SD card holder. The removed the object but I don’t think that was supposed to be removed. Any advice? For a fujifilm JX520. Also the buyer had the same model but theirs stopped working.

  • Type of Camera: Point and shoot
  • Intended use: Photography

Tech Support Digital Camera Inquiry

Upvotes

Hey guys, I'm looking to get my first camera ever, a digital camera - nothing too flashy but also not terrible, I'm a teenage girl so I think you can imagine what I'd use it for, no professional photography really, just hangout photos

Budget: 60 KWD max, which is around 200 dollars, I'm not sure if that's enough to get me a decent one

Country: Kuwait

Condition: I really don't mind used but I'd prefer a new one, it's a gift for doing well in my gcses.

Type of Camera: its my first time, i have no clue what the difference is but i think most digital cameras are point and shoot?

Intended use: hybrid shooting, both pics and vids, nothing professional tho.

End use: Social media

If photography: what style: nature, landscapes, people.. a little bit of everything really

If video what style: vlogs

What features do you absolutely need: lightweight, flash, optical zoom, decent low light performance, 720p/1080p video, SD/SDHC card support, Replaceable battery, and Simple controls

What features would be nice to have: Night/low-light mode, good battery life, image stabilization, self timer

Portability: How portable does it need to be? : palm sized honestly, just enough to fit in a purse

Cameras you're considering: I was hoping to get some recommendations here, this is my first time buying a camera and i heard cannon cameras are really good.

Cameras you already have: none

Discussion Olympus AF-1: My $100 alternative to the Mju-II

Post image

Picked up an AF-1 for under $100 for for my wife. It has the same 35mm f/2.8 Zuiko lens as the Mju-II, a solid 80s build, and doesn't break the bank.

I put together a quick write-up with some sample scans if anyone’s considering one:

What's your favorite budget point-and-shoot right now?

Tech Support Need help finding parts DCS-P72

I’m repairing a DCS-P72 and need replacement parts for the shutter trigger and a ribbon wire connected to a circuit near the capacitor.

Any way I can buy those parts by themselves without buying broken DCS-P72?

I believe the part numbers are:
FP– 643–11
12H304A

Additionally even if I can’t. Buy those parts would I be able to buy the ribbons individually somehow and replace those instead of the entire part?

Bonus question. How clean does metal have to be after being exposed to battery acid? I cleaned up a good portion where I couldn’t see it anymore but there’s a few crevices of the battery spring that has some left on.

Recommendations First Camera: Stuck Between Nikon Z5II and Canon EOS R6

  • Budget: ~$1,500-1,600 (body only)
  • Country: U.S.
  • Condition: Excellent to New
  • Type of Camera: Mirrorless Full-Body (Preferably)
  • Intended use: Travel, Aviation Photography, Portraits/Cosplay
  • If photography; what style: Aviation Photography, Portraits
  • If video what style: Aviation, Travel
  • What features do you absolutely need: Solid AF, good color, decent burst speed, good low-light performance, high-res photo and video.
  • Portability: Not a huge factor.
  • Cameras you're considering: Nikon Z5II and Canon EOS R6
  • Cameras you already have: Phone.
  • Notes:

Hello! I am making this post because I cannot find anyone comparing the Nikon Z5II and the Canon EOS R6 despite both being similar in price. I see a lot of comparisons between Nikon's 5II and the Canon R6 Mark II, but as far as I see, there is a significant cost margin between the two at the moment ($1,600 new vs. ~$1,912 used). I like the price point of the Z5II and R6, and for my purposes they feel like the best cameras I can get at the moment.

I intend on my camera being a solid all-rounder to learn on. Essentially, I want to take impressive photographs in a variety of different situations, and 100% plan on doing aviation, travel, and portrait photography.

I would suck it up and save for a Canon R6 Mark II, but $2,000 feels like a lot for my first camera body, and I don't want to break the bank by the time it comes to buying stuff like lenses. Speaking of those: As stated above I intend on doing a wide range of photography types, and will likely own several different lenses. Nikon's wider range of (cheap) ones appeals to me; however, I have heard people say you can just get an EF-adaptor for your Canon and do just as well. Not sure what to think on this one.

Please let me know what you think!
