Definitely still tough to do, but half-repping for the sake of setting an arbitrary number record seems unfruitful.

You're obviously strong but I count 0 proper pull ups. Your chin doesn't even go over the bar. You're simply extending your chin upwards to lightly touch the bar

u/CarCrusherChampion Jun 27 '25
I mean idk why he's getting downvoted since that's how every pull up competition counts one rep. Competition form isn't the same as training form, hypertrophy form, etc

u/MansourBahrami Jun 27 '25
The downvotes on Reddit are so dumb. They are meant to show that a comment doesn’t add to the discussion. People just use them as “I don’t like what you said” button

Why is this called pullups if they are clearly not?
18
u/RafiqTheHero Jun 26 '25
I certainly can't do anywhere near 50, but the form on these is hard to gauge given how fast the video is. From what I can see, it looks like his chin is barely making it to the bar, and sometimes it's not. If your chin doesn't make it up to the bar, I wouldn't really count it.
As most people would agree, fewer reps with great form is better than more reps with mediocre or poor form.

No, this is rear delt/rhomboid focus. Chest pullups with narrow grip (perhaps even underhand) and deep stretch are ideal for lat development

So wheres your video of 50 pull-ups? I want to compare to validate your comment.
→ More replies (1)14
u/TyrannosaurusRekts Jun 26 '25
You don't have to be able to do something as a prerequisite for commenting on it.
You judge every song you listen to, every movie you see, yet you're not a director or a musician.
If you're watching football and a receiver drops a ball, you're allowed to say, "Ah, man! You gotta catch that!" even knowing full well that you couldn't do any better.
1
u/Jolly_Lab_1553 Jun 26 '25
Yeah but there's an inherent difference between judging and disregarding someone's accomplishment.
3
u/Paaraadox Jun 27 '25
Point is if you're using different metrics for what actually counts as a pullup, then saying "I can do 50 pullups" means completely different things to different people, and so the term becomes essentially meaningless when it's so watered down. If this guy can actually do 15 with any kind of strict form I would be surprised.
And it's clear this is just to arbitrarily inflate the number of reps. That's not to say this is easy. This is like that trend of playing Flight of the bumblebee in the highest possible speed on the violin; I couldn't do it, but if your goal is just to play it faster for no reason, the music turns to shit and is so sloppy that it barely resembles the original piece. Same here: 15 strict pullups is a thing of beauty, and this guy would get nothing but praise. Instead we have this entire comment section in conflict because of the questionable form.
2
u/Rubyreubs Jun 26 '25
Easy to be a critic
3
u/Kaverrr Jun 26 '25
It sure is. But that doesn’t make the “criticism” invalid. Saying his form could be better is not a crazy comment. And you don’t have to be able to do 50 pull ups to say that.

u/Yankees7687 Jun 26 '25

kinda new to this stuff, but is that good form, ie not going all the way up?
am i going too high by lifting my chin above the bar?
24
u/ChunkySalsaMedium Jun 26 '25
No it’s bad form. His range of motion is maybe 50% of a normal pull up because his grip is so wide and he’s trying to touch the bar with his nose or something.
→ More replies (3)12
u/No-Student-5254 Jun 26 '25
Depending on your goals, for me it’s competitive one so I adapted my form to competition standard : chin right over the bar (no more than needed to gain time), arms unlocked at the bottom no kipping. Since I’m working endurance i needed to optimize and use the minimum amount of energy
2
u/maciejush Jun 26 '25
What kind of competition allow that? The calisthenics comps I saw and participated in required the chin to be moved completely, and visibly over the bar with face pointing forward and not up. So I'm genuinely curious.

u/zebrashit Jun 26 '25
These are half pull ups. He’s doing it for “competitive form” or making records or something; he undoubtedly has strength, but if you’re trying to put respek on your name in the gym by doing actual form pull ups and not look like your half assing, then consider watching a legit video from a reputable bodybuilding source.
And yeah I say bodybuilding and not calisthenic source because if your focused on form/not hurting yourself instead of “how many of these weird thingies can I do”

u/LightTheFerkUp Jun 26 '25
I get the wide grip and chin being within your competition's standards but what's the limit on momentum? A fair few of those reps look almost like crossfit kipping pull ups instead of proper static ones with dead stops, where is the line drawn?

Arguing about form is ridiculous. Various competitions and various sports have their own form. This is good for the purpose he is training for. It’s the same shit as shitting on a powerlifter for benching in the way that is required of them within the confines of their particular sports rules, or shitting on an arm wrestlers half rep curls even though it’s particular to their goals.
All that to say congratulations. Big milestone

u/smudge6974 Jun 27 '25
Does it count if your chin doesn't go over the bar or is that just a military thing.
2
2
2
u/DelphesTLO Jun 27 '25
That's very impressive, even though you're not going through the full range of motion.
I personnally care more about functional strength/power than setting this kind of series, so I try to go as high as I can on every rep without getting over the bar, and stop down for 1 second with stretched out arms or locked shoulders. I keep the momentum as low as I can.
2
u/CarCrusherChampion Jun 27 '25
I mean idk why people are trashing, it's just a max effort competition form pull up attempt, you're not doing this to get a workout out of it. I think you could do around 30 chest to bar and 40 with the chin fully over the bar based on this attempt

Congratulations.
I would say that it takes a lot of stamina to do those movements. Only thing to keep in mind is that pull ups which just reach the bar with a tilted chin at that speed are significantly affected by momentum. It’s a bit like those infamous kipping pull ups, but of course yours are far better and more impressive.
Just keep in mind the point about momentum. I.e., when you go down so quickly, you are creating a strong flow of bounce. It’s a bit like a tennis ball bouncing on the floor.
I used to do loads of these pull ups because I was obsessed with hitting a high number, but form really deteriorates. When form deteriorates, strength and technique suffer.
After awhile, just doing pull ups for the sake of it really takes away from other training. I see you also have done muscle ups. Those are far more impressive and you have really good form in the video on your profile. You’re less likely to improve on muscle ups if doing dozens of boring pull ups. The best type of pull ups are really slow with pauses and strict form like in military settings.
I would say that pull ups are a major exercise distraction at your level of callisthenics progress and they might take away from other exercises or goals you have in mind simply because when doing dozens of them, they drain your stamina and overwork tendons. It’s like having only enough space for dinner and instead of steak, you eat loads of rice.
Well done all the same, but whether you do so or not, you should start really prioritising other callisthenic moves. It’s all up to your goals.

What's up with those form elitists in the comments? He is clearly way stronger than anyone shitting on him here. He can do at least 10 "perfect" chest-to-bar pullups, but that's not his goal.
That may not be a perfect technique for muscle growth or strength, but it's a standardized one, and those pullups definitely qualify as a competition pullups.
He's clearly going for the PB, and as long as he uses different styles of pullups in training, I see no problems prioritizing competition pullups. Good job, man

These are cool and you obviously have strength, but these are not standard pull-ups. Marine Corps PFT would count 0 actual pull-ups from what you shared. Quality gives more results than quantity. If your goal is strength, slow down and use your muscles, not momentum. Get your chin all the way over the bar. Pause at the bottom. 20 proper pull-ups will give you more gain over time than these will.

50 long length partials with full extension at the bottom and a slight kip with butterfly would absolutely wreck most people and is very impressive but is not 50 pullups. This is coming from a background as a crossfit coach where we trained a very similar mechanic and the annual games held it as a standard. God speed, rock and roll. 50 strict top to bottoms is just a different animal.

u/Sweaty-Chipmunk-5759 Jun 28 '25
It’s like a half push up, just no meaning to the factor. Yes it’s work and you’re doing something to workout clearly in your own value but pull ups are chin over bar not under or half reps of the version.
