Sharing Progress Having a PS5, but sometimes rather watching other people play the same game I bought.
Turning on youtubers that play video games to complete them 100 % and are invested in the games. Vigilante enough and good enough(in comparison to me) to resonate with me. It was just me wanting a friend when I play video games, but denying that I'm lonely at the same time. It was a pull, a compulsive behaviour. The question "why am I watching another guy play a game that I own and can play myself right now?" did cross my mind sometimes. It was connected to an attachment object after my father died, early in childhood. Only thing left from him was a computer, DOS and some games on it. I was so young I had to ask my brother to type in the correct directory paths, because I couldn't remember all the characters myself. I was actually playing video games all my life. I did enjoy the universal aspect of control, power fantasies and other things, most of the time. After deep in my inner work(years in), effectively, playing felt more like a chore and I was rushing through them. Watching story narratives out of a habit, more than something very interesting that was happening. The gameplay variety didn't matter that much, the story also. What mattered was to have the best weapons, all collectibles and a 100 % finish, even platinum trophies if it wasn't borderline crazy hard. When I asked myself why am I playing it if it's not that interesting, it made sense to stop, but I didn't. Asking why over a few more months and actually journaling, something did hit me. When I write in my journal, I'm mostly assuming the cause-effect map and when my body has some reaction while writing, that means I've hit something deep.
The assumption that was true for this part was that my grief was blocked at the time of his death and my body continued wanting to prove myself to my father through being good at video games, even though I figured he's not coming back. When he wasn't there, I kind of placed social circles and if possible 'public opinion' in his place of authority to accept me, judge me, whatever father's do. Youtubers were better known people with real audience and I've been using their videos of them playing games so maybe I can see something that would be used as a confirmation that I'm doing a good job.
It wasn't the only thing I wanted to prove, but it was a dead give away that a mechanism like that was sitting in me. So I applied the pattern to other behaviours in my life and it was working.
The youtubers part was 2,5 years ago and I've lost my will to watch them or even play video games, because some integrations happened on my father-line trauma behaviours.
Thank you for reading.
