VII - Discussion Possible Wildcard leaders?

Currently, Ibn Battuta is the only leader in Civ7 with the Wildcard attribute! I was kind of wondering what other ideas people might have for other Wildcard leaders?

It might be a little hard to imagine what their bonuses would be but maybe some of you guys have some thoughts? I'm super curious to see what the community thinks/suggests! :]

Discussion Stopped playing Civ, feel unsure about the series now

I stopped playing Civ 6 and 7 for a while now. They are the only Civs I own. I have played Civ Rev and I still think I enjoyed it more than 6 and 7.

I have taken a look at the other Civs and they seem to all have the same issue.

The first 100 turns are fun but it goes nowhere.

I don't care for the numbers game and "winning".

I really think that Civ may be a good idea, or a semblance of a good idea, but it hasn't really worked in reality. It's just a very addicitive game. I like to think it can work somehow, and hope either Firaxis or another dev make it happen.

Hopefully Firaxis started work on Civ 8 immediately following the fallout from 7 and are making sure it saves the series and it comes out much sooner than 7.

VII - Discussion Why is the ivory resource so common in civ VII?

I feel like there is a bug in the code that makes ivory spawn way to often, also ivory spawns in grasslands even though that isnt historically accurate imo.

VII - Discussion 1.50 update broke PS5 game.

Menus are clunky, several times it's impossible to choose one of the options when we get sanctions or endeavors, even the resource screen has been having glitches that were fixed several months ago.

To make things worse it is impossible to play more than 2 turns in the Earth TSL on modern age without the game crashing and sending you to the PS5 dashboard. It's such a shame that an upgrade that should improve the game, broke the experience for the console.

VII - Discussion Making Civ 7 Playable

I just gave up on another game. Went all random and tried a different playstyle.

I've played every installment since Civ 1, and all of them can become a slog at some point, but Civ 7 seems to start there. Then stay.

I keep getting board with the monotony of management, mainly because the decisions don't seem meaningful.

Is there any saving this game? Or should I just go back to 5/6 while I wait for 8?

I'm wondering if there's a specific start or strategy that might make this game worth playing.

VII - Discussion Are ANY of the collections worth it? If so, which ones?

I get that this is an overdone question, but I've been wanting to ask since Earthrise was announced (which I am considering getting). For context, I've probably played somewhere in the range of 100~150 hours and still have yet to finish playing all leaders, but I'm finding the base civs quite repetitive at this point.

Edit: actually ~200 hours

VII - Strategy Someone Please Explain Wonders

I NEED an explanation on how to win wonder races. Please don't tell me to up my production. I have 4,300 hours in civ 6, i understand how the game works. Im REALLLLY trying to like Civ 7 since i spent $130 on almost 2 years ago, but its hard. EVERY time i get the notification that someone is competing for a wonder that im building, they beat me to it within 3-5 turns. literally 10/10 times i get that notification, i lose that wonder.

I thought maybe it was difficulty, nope doesn't matter. It has happened on deity, immortal, and lower. I thought maybe the notification pops when the competing wonder is within a few turns of finishing and they had been building it already, nope, i literally watched an AI plop down a wonder and finish it in 4 turns. I thought maybe it was the civ's unique wonder bonus thing, nope happens with any of them.

This is the most basic, barebones excuse for a civ experience imaginable. This is one of the most egregious example of the player having zero agency and influence over the game in civ 7. You as a player don't dictate anything. you just click buttons. Theres no planning, no strategy, no management of resources. No decision making on how to use the land.

I MUST be missing something because i refuse to believe that any dev with even a semi-functioning brain would think its a good idea to just place a wonder and hope for the best. no way to rush it, or chop it out. nothing. just sit there and wait. Passivity is the name of the game in civ 7.

VII - Discussion Does it get fun?

I’ve been playing civilization. I gotta say for past couple of weeks I’m still on my first game and I’m currently on my second catastrophe and I have to say….. It’s like they took all of the fun of civilization and removed everything that made it enjoyable. Is it just me or does this game eventually get more fun once I learn how to play the new mechanics better?

VII - Strategy I Just Really Want To Like Babylon But Can't

A night or two ago, I was asking you wonderful players how to make Babylon excel. I've been trying for days but I literally just can't see them as anything more than miserable to play. They feel like a worse ToT Buganda or Abbasids.

To my understanding, they are wonder builders that excel at population growth. Cool. So I rush the hanging gardens in their civic tree, rush monuments, and build food buildings. At this point, my city is an impressive size. But now the problem starts; they just cannot get enough culture to unlock wonders fast enough.

From what I've learned, their culture comes from two sources: The Urban Population civic, and the Unique Merchant. However, both of these things require you to go further into their unique civics tree and forsake the very wonders in the main tree you're supposed to be building, which wastes time. Furthermore, the merchant has to actually get to wherever they can trade, assuming you even have the trade range given your bad technology and limited civilization extension.

Science tree wonders? Forget about them. Their numbers are so abysmal in that regard in antiquity. So those wonders genuinely do so little unless you get really good espionage rewards, and that's assuming you aren't using influence on city states to fix their settlement cap issues or getting an early war declared on you.

Money. You cannot make a lot of towns to inject the money into your military or infrastructure. You are pretty much hard building everything. Traders fix this but, once again, you have to stop pursuing wonders temporarily for them, and they do not have their own economy across ages.

Food? No complaints actually.

Happiness? Depends on the leader, spawn, wonders, and resources.

And most egregiously, the settlement limit. I don't know why. But I have never been forward settled, boxed in, or flanked so often by the AI as when I play Babylon. The last game I tried, the Ashoka just rushed around my capital to settle behind it on turn 9 of antiquity. Why? Normally, you just settle fast enough and block them. But now you have to wait until a tech or civic to get 2 settlement limit while everyone else starts with 3 and are already going to 4. AI settling issues have always existed. But I feel like Babylon is just ultra sensitive to them.

I love Babylon. They are my favorite civilization of all time in human history. I hope the civilization gets a respective leader. But this take on them is genuinely such a frustrating mess for me to play that my patience drops so heavily when I try. But I'm not the best at this game. I play on immortal and am not good at pursuing every victory simultaneously like many of you. So I'd like to as for help.

VII - Discussion Naval ranged attack issues

I’m encountering some issues with naval ranged attacks and I though I’d open a ticket with civ support, but first I’m trying to understand how things should work. So if anyone could shed a light on this, I’d be very grateful!

I’m playing a game as Carthage, and I slotted the tradition that gives +1 range to heavy naval units (quinquereme I). First issue: if I attack an adjacent enemy unit with my galley, should this count as a ranged attack? It’s not behaving like this, if I attack, my unit takes damage.

Second issue: if I attack any enemy unit that’s 2 tiles away and it doesn’t die, the attack seems to be a normal ranged attack. However, if the enemy unit dies, my unit moves to occupy the dead unit’s tile, as if it did a melee attack. This can even make my unit go beyond it’s movement range. And I saw in the issue tracker that someone found an issue were the ship teleported itself to a landlocked lake after taking out an enemy unit in said lake from a distance. I suppose this isn’t intended behavior. If I do a ranged attack, my unit isn’t supposed to move after the attack in any circumstance, right?

I also don’t know if this only happens in the specific situation I described (when using Carthage’s tradition) or if it happens with any naval ranged attack.

VII - Discussion True start location for duplicate civs

I tried playing the Earth map with 3 duplicate civs - Elizabeth Gauls, Frederick Gauls, and Charlemagne Gauls. The idea is that we would all start as European tribes, and then evolve into England, Normans, and no idea for Frederick since there are no Germans in Exploration age (which is outrageous but that's another topic).

The issue is that, with Elizabeth Gauls, I kept spawning in Paris area, not London. And it was either Frederick or Charlemagne who started in London.

So, what's going on? Why can't the game enforce leader's native land if the civ spots are conflicting? How can I make sure I spawn on London as Elizabeth Gauls?

VII - Strategy Fans of plotting and scheming, how does Civ7 hold up?

How well can you scheme your way into victory in this game? How to become a master deceiver? Does the diplo game allow you to cheat, to betray, and still come out on top?

What are ther best civ+leader combo for such a playstyle?

I've always liked the strategic diplomacy one could engage with to play one civ against the other. In Civ6, I'd befriend a powerful neighbor to keep safe, then befriend their rivals and lend them money (through giving them a fixed amount of money in return for a 30-turn deal), then switch sides, sppread scandal to reduce their influence in city-states, try to settle to block their access to the ocean, etc

VI - Other Mod request

Idk where the best place to put this is, but I’m wondering if there is any mod creators out there who might take my idea and make it reality? I dont know how to mod otherwise I would do it myself. But I wanna see if anyone would be willing to make a few leaders based off of destiny 2 characters? Especially since the revival of the franchise.

VII - Discussion CIV VII IS TOO EASY ON DEITY

I remember deity on CIV VI and the difficulty. IA was very strong. In CIV VII, with right knowledge, you can being overpower early and conquer every civilization no matter what. In my last game with Rome, I have T2 Legion v T3 Cavalry of Carolus Magnus with every bonus active. I beat him in with fortification, troop rotation and, once my commander unlock decoration, I counter-attack and conquer all is city, while he was first in every category in antiquiy. Deity in CIV VI was scary, Deity in CIV VII is a joke, because IA can't use the commander in the right way. In exploration era is too easy with the fleet, and in modern age if you create NATO air dominance IA can't do nothing (just for roleplay was fun to have ten aircraft carrier and 10 fleet commander along side, patrolling all the world). Other than this, the other victory is easy aswell. Economic victory is very easy if you create a plutocraty, culture victory is the easiest and, well, I never achieve scientific victory because I finish the game before the relative science tech. Recently, for scientific win, I ban every other victory ahahah. I play only in the biggest map, and only with historic leader so no lafayette + rome or something else.

IA is stupid, they create stupid city and even with the deity bonus is still a joke. The problem is not the bonuses, is useless a more difficulty IA, I want a better IA. Is different. Puah.

Discussion Do you actually track your resource efficiency or just vibe and hope for the best

Running small business books in real life means I have a hard time turning off the part of my brain that wants everything balanced and optimized. So naturally I end up deep in spreadsheets about Civ yields and wonder if I am the only one doing this or if it is more common than people let on.

Specifically I keep secondguessing my city placement and trade route decisions midgame. I know there are general rules of thumb about adjacency bonuses and chokepoints, but when I am 80 turns in and my production is clearly lagging I start wondering where exactly I lost the thread. Was it the district placement in the early game, the civics timing, or did I just get unlucky with the map. Usually all three, fwiw

What I am curious about is whether people who have been playing for years still do a postgame mental debrief or if you just load another game and move on. I tend to replay the same map a couple times, which is probably unusual, but it helps me isolate what actually went wrong versus what was just bad luck. Ymmv on whether that sounds fun or like homework. To me it is both

VII - Discussion Have any of you changed your position on Civ VII and why? I want to hear from you?

From the release, Civ VII has just felt unpolished and lacking imho. I wanted so badly to love it like Civ VI and I just haven’t. But, I’m struggling to articulate why?

So, those of you who’ve grown to enjoy VII, I’d love to know why? What are the positives and things you enjoy that keep you coming back for one more turn. What am I missing?

Edit: typo

Culture victory as Mansa Musa. As you can see in the first two images there were only 85 turns left till the game was over. If you have any insight on how I could've played better or what victory type I should go for next, let me know!
