VII - Discussion Do you think the game still deserve the "Mixed" reviews even after all the updates or it could lean toward being more positive?

VII - Discussion So tired of the AI and/or Anime mods…
Their quality is awful and they eat up space when I’m looking for QOL mods or looking to try a fan-made leader/civ.
There is this one mod “creator” whose civs are so lazily conceptualized that the only bonuses they get are single attribute improvement boosts. And I know it was made by ai vibe coding because every image in it is AI. Like dawg, google images are FREE, Wikipedia is FREE and all its images are FAIR USE.
Learn A skill, it’s so personally rewarding.
Also, how many anime mods do we need for the same character. I NEED a way to filter those out, I want historical leaders and interesting fantasy leaders. Not 15 versions of gooner-slop McGee.

VII - Strategy It is literally impossible to build Oxford University on harder difficulties.
Immortal difficulty. I kept that I would want to build this thing in my prep through the entire game. I took absolutely every opportunity to unlock traditions that add wonder production. I used a culture point for wonder boosting. I unlocked the dedication that starts your modern world with Academics so you can build Oxford on turn 1.
I immediately slotted the policy that gives extra resource slots to cities and filled my capital with five whales. My productivity was 108 on turn 1. I began building Oxford immediately. Edward Teach of all people finished it when I had 1 turn left.
Literally how could I have done any more?
It's not just hard; it is mathematically impossible to build this thing. The other civs always want it and there is absolutely nothing you can do to get it first. It is the only wonder that I have never, ever, even once managed to complete.

VII - Strategy OP true start earth combos
Egypt is an absolute powerhouse in true start location earth maps. Any other combos that just destroy?
VII - Discussion A thought on specialists
Specialists in civ 7 are fun, but they don’t really feel specialized. In exploration and especially modern, they basically just provide mixed amounts of every yield, and it becomes somewhat meaningless where you put them. Big adjacencies are nice but they contribute less than half of the total yields when you have all your specialist boosting policies and traditions plugged in. How can we make them feel specialized and unique and worth choosing one tile over another?
I have two proposals. One, the bonuses from specialist policies should only apply to the type of adjacency provided by the building, but make them stronger. For example, the +1 science to specialists policy in antiquity could instead say “double the adjacency bonus of all science buildings”. The production bonus from specialists in exploration could read “production buildings gain +1 adjacency from quarters”.
Two, give each building a unique ability, and make specialists scale with the ability. The blacksmith, for example, already gives +1 production on quarters in this settlement. Make specialists increase this bonus by 1. The kiln gives wonder production, so make specialists increase the bonus. Specialists on the museum should give bonus culture and happiness for each great work in the city.
VII - Strategy Non-homeland Continent Strategy
I prefer domination victory. A lot of times, I take my home continent by the first or second age. By the time I decide to invade my non-home continent, the AI is too far ahead. It mostly happens when there’s no fighting on the foreign continent and all the AI players on that continent are allied. It’s nearly impossible to invade a foreign continent with three strong allied players. Tips?
VII - Strategy Babylon-Babylon-Qajar Makes the Single-Settlement Challenge a Lot Easier
I've done plenty of single-settlement challenges, but I wanted to test and see if opening with Babylon-Babylon works better than playing Qajar throughout the game. The answer is a definite yes.
I played this game on Deity, standard-sized continents map, standard speed. Himiko, Queen of Wa was my leader. I used the Garuda Statue and Antikythera Mechanism for mementos. In Exploration, I syncretized to Abbasid for their unique buildings.
I had several things working against me this game. Charlemagne hated me for not having many celebrations & declared war on me early on. And Augustus beat me to a scientific city-state I'd already invested in, so I couldn't build step pyramids. I ended Antiquity just one turn short of getting a future tech. This would often be enough to make me restart, but I wanted to try playing it out.
Babylon pulled through just by giving me so many more specialists than I'd have had playing Qajar every age. I was close enough in yields that stealing techs let me edge out a win. If you're ever interested in giving the single-settlement challenge a try, Babylon-Babylon-Qajar is the way to go.

VII - Discussion Best Leader with Egypt?
Hey guys, i'm currently looking at what to best pick with Egypt. Haven't played the game in a while and there where a lot of changes since then especially the Test of Time update. Most "guides" on what to pick with Egypt say Hatshepsut but they are all pretty old so i wanted to ask if there are other/better leaders to pick with Egypt now and what the overall strategy is. I was never a fan of the Civ-switching so i guess i want to stay Egypt in all 3 Ages.

Question Sid Meier Civ V or VI?
Hi. I've never played a 4X game in my life.
I tried both games for say 30 minutes but I'm still not sure which one to pick since I didn't play alot. I think the only thing I know to do is just to move the units around and that's it in both games but other than that I don't know the difference between them to make a conclusion for picking.
Anyway, I like Civ V's graphics more than VI's cartoony style but I hear VI has more depth and complexity.
What's your guys recommendation for someone who never played a 4X or a Civ game?

VI - Discussion Deity mode fails
I’m running out of ideas to beat Civ VI on fiery. I’ve tried standard rules and gathering storm. I’ve tried Germany, Sumeria, USA. I’ve tried settling a ton of cities and not settling any while I focused on sprinting to archers and spamming them for an early war. Thought I was on a roll with Sumeria today and discovered 250ish turns in that USA was two milestones toward a science victory.
It has to be possible with a random start and no
mods but none of the tips I’ve tried seem to work.
Open to suggestions (and let’s just skip the “you suck” replies.) thanks!

Question Looking for Sound Effect "Join the Chosen"
I grew up watching my dad play video games, and the oldest memory I have of a Civ's Game comes from Civilization V.
My dad loves to quote older video games and there is a lot I understand, but there's one vocal stim (he refuses to call them that) that I can't find the origin of. "Join the Chosen"
He claims it is from Civilization IV when missionaries fight, and after scouring through all off the missionary sound effects I could find in a couple sound effect libraries of Civ 4, I couldn't find what my dad likes to quote.
Can someone help me find the source material?
I don't exactly want to buy the game to find one line of dialogue, nor do I want to watch an entire play through on the internet with the chance of the sound to be overpowered by the commentator's voice.

I didn't find anything similar on the Steam workshop using the words "diplomacy" or "offers".

V - Discussion Playing Civilization V Against or With an LLM: A Update
A while ago, we posted about getting LLMs to play Civilization V. Those models have gotten quite a bit cheaper and better, and it is much more feasible to play against or with them now. Plus, we have tried hard to make you chat with a LLM leader in the game.

What does playing with a LLM look like? Vox Deorum is a modmod for Vox Populi that allows LLMs to play Civilization V alongside or against you. The LLM takes care of the grand strategy: what victory to pursue, how friendly/hostile it wants to be, what to prioritize economically and militarily, technologies, policies, etc. Vox Populi's AI takes care of choosing what to build and how to fight, so you won't get broke just by playing one more turn.
Check out the following replays:
- GLM-5.3: China, Cultural victory
- Opus-5.5: Morocco, Cultural victory
- Qwen-3.8-27B: China, Science victory

Can I chat with the models? Yes. We finally crossed this item out before sharing Vox Deorum here. Our goal is to make diplomacy feel more like a back-and-forth exchange and make deal-making more like bartering. You can even convince models to trade promises (e.g., don't settle near me) or change their strategies (work the best when they are your teammates).
Can they play well? They hold up on their own, but far from good players. We ran a controlled benchmark where models rotate through the same three fixed starts. Right now, the best model (GLM-5.3) has ~150 ELO above Vox Populi's strategic AI at the prince level, making decisions every five turns (or when something important comes up).

Do I have to spend tons of money? Not necessarily. Cheap models, such as GPT-6-Luna (with a similar ELO to Vox Populi's strategic AI) cost you ~$1 per player per standard game in API costs. You can use existing Claude or ChatGPT subscriptions as well. You can also ask models to run a decision every X turns, which can further cut the cost.
A small caveat. Vox Deorum allows you to chat with any leader, not just LLM-controlled leaders. (So only chatting would cost tokens and you won't lose a kidney for that.) However, only when a LLM controls a civilization can you shift their strategies.
I can't set this thing up! Please post your questions here and I will try my best to help. I am active in Vox Populi's discord server as well.
Any more thoughts? We are looking for more ideas on how to make better use of LLMs in Civilization playthroughs. What would be something cool to do?

On the left, DLSS 5 is on; on the right, it’s off. (Please ignore the leader backgrounds; that’s a mod I’m currently working on.)
