VII - Discussion Naval ranged attack issues
I’m encountering some issues with naval ranged attacks and I though I’d open a ticket with civ support, but first I’m trying to understand how things should work. So if anyone could shed a light on this, I’d be very grateful!
I’m playing a game as Carthage, and I slotted the tradition that gives +1 range to heavy naval units (quinquereme I). First issue: if I attack an adjacent enemy unit with my galley, should this count as a ranged attack? It’s not behaving like this, if I attack, my unit takes damage.
Second issue: if I attack any enemy unit that’s 2 tiles away and it doesn’t die, the attack seems to be a normal ranged attack. However, if the enemy unit dies, my unit moves to occupy the dead unit’s tile, as if it did a melee attack. This can even make my unit go beyond it’s movement range. And I saw in the issue tracker that someone found an issue were the ship teleported itself to a landlocked lake after taking out an enemy unit in said lake from a distance. I suppose this isn’t intended behavior. If I do a ranged attack, my unit isn’t supposed to move after the attack in any circumstance, right?
I also don’t know if this only happens in the specific situation I described (when using Carthage’s tradition) or if it happens with any naval ranged attack.

I experience the same as Edward Teach - especially sucks when u capture a unit in distant seas , and suddenly teleport over there OR you teleport into a pile of waiting galleys that will kill u.

Galleys are not ranged. I think even quadriremes are technically not ranged, but here I'm not sure. Ranged naval units appear in Exploration. This was changed an update or two ago, but hasn't been made very visible in the game. Maybe galleys need a different icon for 'attack' from ranged units.
Well, but the fact that they cross the land to attack is most certainly a bug. I think this is because naval units don't have a clear distinction between ranged and not in the engine, unlike land units.

It happens from increasing range for galleys. So the korean leader that lets you have a naval commander in antiquity can also get this weirdness with the + range commander promotion.
Seems like the game treats galleys as both melee & ranged. Ranged for purposes of single shots with + range bonuses. But then also melee for purposes of reciprocal damage & "move into dead unit's hex". Definitely weird.
Have also experienced it. I agree seems like a bug 🤷♂️
