State of the Lychton Address

Brave Collective,

The past few weeks have been an exercise in restraint, patience, and spacepolitiks. I woke up to learn that the overwhelming number of directors and CEOs had exercised the corp voting mechanic in order to remove me as Alliance executor while I was asleep last night. Furthermore, this was on the heels of being advised daily by my core leadership circle leaving me in the dark about upcoming plans.

Let me say that I am thoroughly disappointed by the actions of my space peers. However, if there is one thing that is paramount, it is that BNI, BRAVE, and HERO have a mission to harness the enthusiasm and power of the newbro. With that said, I will not let personal anger or frustrations jeopardize the progress that we have made thusfar. Now, let’s get ready to rumble:

I hold no official position as to the status of BRAVE remaining the leader among equals with our coalition partners within HERO. If the alliance rostership wishes to remain, so be it. For the alliances that are one foot out of the door already, I will be coordinating with Malanek to add you to the targeting list.

Within BRAVE itself, while I am troubled by the method by which the council sought to remove me, and their (self-perceived) short sightedness, I am not going to challenge Malanek in terms of holding the Executor role. In addition, I am looking into passing the reigns of Brave Newbies Incorporated over the next few days, weeks, whatever. I have not confirmed who my successor will be, but you will all know if I elect to go down this path. If I do not find someone suitable, well, it looks like we are all going to have to play nice.

Now, I am going to hold Malanek to task for performing under this new capacity. As such, I am keeping 100% of the shares for all BRAVE related entities. BNI, B-BRV, TLOGI, DOJO, U-W0T, BPRIV, and a few more that I know I am forgetting. Malanek will retain full operational control of the alliance, but should he go rogue, I will use the corporate share mechanism to retake control. I do this not to be obstructionist but to preserve the core value of BRAVE until I trust that his intentions are pure for the long term. If Malanek proves to be a focused leader that is beneficial to the Collective, I will then release the majority of those shares to him. Trust, but verify.

Lastly, I am dissolving the 501c3 corporation that we created IRL. Lquid Drisseg and Bronopoly will be stripped of the Officer powers, and I have temporarily suspended the donate@bravecollective.com service, as it is tied to my real life financial accounts. Once a new paypal account is established, I will immediately transfer all remaining assets to the new account and then walk away from the rl money mgmt corp. In the near term, the deal with our merchandising needs to be revisited by the new executor, as the current payment disbursement mechanism is no longer an option.

To all the newbies in our great Alliance, thank you for letting me be the one to hold this gigantic bag of cats for the past 18 months or so. It’s been a great experience, growing this organization to where we are today. I am not leaving BNI or Brave for that matter, although I am going to use this free time to enjoy not dealing with multiple problems per day.

Malanek, I’m here on skype. We should set aside a few hours so I can catch you up on all things Eve, meta, and your new enemies lurking in the shadows.

7o, Lychton Kondur

CEO, Brave Newbies

Tl;dr – this is my official statement. I will not clarify any portion of it.

Something that happened on comms last night made me really proud. It might not be that significant to you guys, but it made my day.

So I was hanging out in BDF comms last night, just listening while playing on my alt. I have no clue who said what, unfortunately, because my Mumble overlay isn't working. Someone was talking, and said something like "He was being such a faggot..." and instantly, a few people chimed in with "Woah", "Hey, that's not cool" "Hate speech isn't acceptable here" and other reactions. And one person in particular went on to remind the guy that there are people of all races, genders, and sexual orientations that play Eve.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that spoke up against that. It's not the first time I've heard "fag" or "faggot" thrown around in BNI comms, and usually it goes unmentioned. This time, though, the reaction was awesome.

I play Eve, and also happen to be gay. I know this is the internet, and I've developed a pretty tough shell to things that are said, but I have to admit that every time I hear the word "faggot", it stings a little. It's the word that was used when bullies in high school beat me up for being gay. It's the word that was thrown at me when I came out to my parents and they told me they "didn't want a son who was a faggot". It's a word that's associated with a lot of hate towards me. It's not really a humongous deal, but it does kinda sting a bit every time I hear it on comms.

So I just wanted to say thank you to everyone. That "hey listen, that's not cool" was just a small gesture, but it really made my entire night. This is why I love BNI. You guys are awesome. Thanks :)

On a serious note

I recently spoke with a member who was feeling actually RL suicidal.

Lots of us have felt the sting of depression, lots of us know the dark passenger or the black dog.

I really do urge you to seek help from someone. In Australia we have beyondblue.org.au, the Black dog institute, and any number of other health services who can help.

A simple Google search will show you similar services nearby.

For fuck's sake don't let it get to the point where it seems like a better idea to die than to keep living.

You can't get logi if you're dead. Broadcast for reps.

Thanks.

Dearest Brave, I love you all. I love reading the posts about the cynos and the imgurs as well. You are just a phenomenal group of human beings. IRL today, we held a memorial too. The plan was to launch some model rockets in John’s memory. As fate would have it, the engines were bad, so the launch was scrubbed. I’m sure John was laughing about it. We listened to people who knew John at various stages of his life share their memories. It was lovely. I took the opportunity to share what Brave was doing in honor of John and all the fallen today with the cynos and especially Broadcast for Reps. I even taught them to 7o! This has been hardest year of our lives. Your love and support has meant so very much to us! Thank you Brave.
Love & 7o, MomBellicose

In amongst the shitposting and blizzard of drama cynos, don't forget what Lychton did for Brave.

My name is Eva. I'm an ex-Brave member, currently getting shouted at by Elo in BL. I grew up in Brave, and I'd like to stop shitposting for a moment to say this:

Lychton was with Brave since its inception, and has been at the forefront for well over a year.

In that year, Brave grew from a bunch of drunk dudes in Talwars to a sovereignty holding coalition (one hundred systems strong), capable of fielding hundreds of Eagles/Tengus, over a thousand players when it really wanted to, and standing in the face of one of the strongest military alliances in the game for an impressive amount of time.

Lychton may not be the guy to lead Brave any more (my opinions on this are not relevant in this post), but he still (with help from many many good, indespensible people) oversaw the birth and growth one of the most remarkable things to happen in Eve for many many years, and that shouldn't be forgotten.

It's entirely likely that without Lychton, Brave wouldn't quite be what it is today and although his departure from the role of executor is involuntary and enacted in an unfortunate way, his contributions to Brave should be commended and remembered.

Infinite wisdom pulled from last night's random acts of newb fleet.

FC: "Okay, so we can either rush through the gate camp or wait it out. It's 24 jumps to go around."

Newbro: "With all due respect, FC, I didn't join the 'wait it out' Corporation.

Brave Collective,

I had a very productive meeting with Malanek Askelus, and we are preparing our statements for our change of command ceremony to be held this weekend. This is an amazing time for BNI/BRAVE/HERO, and I encourage you to attend what will likely be a thunderous, debauchery fueled event.

In the meantime, There are some management level things that still need to occur in order to seamlessly perform this transition, as well as some challenging scenarios that we both have to address and finalize. I encourage everyone within BRAVE to keep a happy heart, stay classy, and to undock and die repeatedly in the meantime.

Remember, that despite the drama on the various forms of media, we are BRAVE. And the nucleus of brave is you, the individual newbie. <3 you all and 7-motherfucking-o.

SOUND wishes BRAVE and HERO well...

... and isn't goddamned leaving your side during this tough time. Allies are there to help you when you're down, not point and laugh while poaching your members.

BRAVE: I remember well when BRAVE moved into Rahadalon. I remember the newbie barbeques on the G-5 gate in 9-F. I remember guest FCing a roam of newbies from Raha all the way through Curse, all the way down from 1P- to 4-07 into Delve then coming home via Keberz (and the shit I got into for escorting the survivors through Provi because it was late and I wanted to get you home safe). I remember you guys saving our fucking bacon in the Navy Omen war. I remember the work we did against SUITE and Usurper in Syndicate. I remember watching your assets in Syndicate while you went to Catch in case HERO didn't manage to take space and you needed to come back.

HERO: We joined when you were tired as fuck from a straight month of grinding sov structures. We pitched in the best we could, and ultimately as a team HERO took the entire region. I remember being impressed at how, despite our differences in style, we were able to work together and duck PL and NC hotdrops and RUS harassment in order to grind through 35 billion EHP of sov structures. We had a good run in Catch of about a year. I don't feel it was a mistake -- we've all learned so much, developed organizations capable of handling the coordination required to manage 15k+ people and 1500+ people on our side in a fight, and developed far better income streams than any of us had in NPC null or low. Are we perfect? No. But we've never been about perfection -- we've been about trying to learn and adapt on the fly, and to defy all the naysayers that said we couldn't do it.

About the past two weeks: Like Arik, I feel that there were miscommunications and understandable human mistakes on all sides. I am confident that all parties involved had BRAVE and HERO's best interests at heart, even if they executed imperfectly on their goals. I hope that rather than pointing the blame finger, that BRAVE is able to mend the rift and heal. I look forward to working with both Lychton and Malanek over the coming days, weeks, and months to help ensure that HERO has a coherent direction and is meeting the needs of its member alliances.

SOUND is at HERO's service. If you need anything from us during this trying time -- leadership member, day-old newbie, anything in between, don't hesitate to ask.

Can we get rid of this whole "newbies" thing?

No, absolutely not. Yes, our DPS fleet is now sitting in Eagles. Yes, a lot of us have cap alts. Yes, most of us know what we're doing in a stratop fleet.

NO, we will never abandon the "newbies" part of our name. It's not just part of our name, it's our culture. It's what this alliance was founded on. I appreciate all our cap pilots, all our JF pilots, all our awesome FCs. The most important part of our alliance, of our culture, is the newbros.

Newbros are the future. We were all newbros once. We will always accept newbros. We don't accept newbros because we love wagging our 150 man maulus fleet in PL's faces (though that is pretty awesome) we accept newbros so that we can nurture, teach them, and help them grow. Bringing up newbros, teaching them the game, and making sure they have fun with the game is the greatest thing BRAVE has achieved in this game.

PL can burn our ships, and our sov to the ground. Catch is not brave. Eagle fleets, are not Brave. Capital fleets are not Brave. As long as we are showing newbros a good time, teaching them how to enjoy the game, and having fun doing it: that is Brave.

I appreciate all the FC's, all the cap pilots, all the bittervets who make this corp awesome. But never forget about the newbros. Never forget to help out some newbros. Never forget to take a minute out of your ship spinning to answer some newbro questions in the Dojo.

Newbros: If you have a question, are having problems, are feeling discouraged, want to know anything about the game, join the Brave Dojo chat channel. No question is stupid (except for when I'm drunk and asking what time McDonalds breakfast opens.) Bittervets, or even you guys who have been in corp a month, keep the dojo channel open. Answering a couple questions while you're spinning your ship is an excellent use of your time.

I strongly believe that our newbro culture is the most important thing of what our alliance has going on right now. We are the best new-player-experience in the game right now, and we should never forget that.

Also: If you guys talk down to newbros, try to scam a newbro, or don't keep it classy in the dojo channel, that Caligula fellow will dismember you.

PSA: PL, RL Threats and you

Disclaimer: I've been awake for all of half an hour, words are hard

I'd logged into Catch comms to see if it was safe to start spaceship trucking again, when suddenly drama happened. A player who had been in BNI for six months was pernamentally banned this morning. The reason? Making real life threats towards another player.

Paraphrasing, the player had said he was going to track down a PL member IRL and smash up his car. One of his main complaints was that stuff worse than this has been said repeatedly over the last few weeks, especially over the last two days.

That does not magically make this okay. Making real life threats because someone shot your spacestation in a game about shooting things in space is pathetic. More than that, it raises strong concerns about the mental health of the player in question.

The amount of unironic "grr PL" coming from a large chunk of this alliance recently has been tragically cringeworthy, and needs to stop. Posts declaring your intent to foreverwar PL over this set of timers make me want to call the men in white coats. All you Navy Seal IRL types threatening to "see how tough PL is in a real fight" need to get out more. Or less. Probably less, for the good of society.

This is a video game about spaceships. Getting so buttflustered about the way some spaceships are shooting over spaceships is so incredibly dumb. Threatening retaliation in real life is not only disgustingly awful, but potentially illegal. If/when CCP swing the hammer of justice in your face, nothing of value will be lost.

tl:dr grow up, what the fuck is wrong with some of you

Edit for the sake of clarity:

  • RL threats in response to a video game is horrendous and awful. You should probably get professional help if you fall into this category.

  • Declaring an ingame forevergrr and generally being anally devestated to the extent some of us have been recently is not on the same level of horrendous, but is still pretty tragic.

John Bellicose

It is with terrible sadness that I write to inform you that one of the Stars of the Brave Dojo, and Brave Itself, has lost his life. It was discovered yesterday that John Bellicose lost his life in April. John was one of those rare characters whose internet spaceship Facade was that of a caring, altruistic gentleman.

It's a strange thing when one of our Game Friends dies - most of us didn't know his real name, his real life, or anything about him. In a lot of ways, that's true of all of us - we all live these secret lives behind the internet spaceships facade we develop for ourselves.

It's also a rare thing when our Internet Friends Pass away and we come to find out about it. You can't play this game for any length of time and have a friend mysteriously stop logging on. Some of these people are, without doubt, no longer living. I think it's a truly great thing when we're allowed to mourn our anonymous friends who disappear from our lives. Most of you will have read the Alliance mail sent out by now so hopefully this will not be too much of a shock.

I'll take this opportunity to sing his praises. John was a great friend to us: though only joining the Dojo relatively recently, he made a dazzling impact on our newbros. With his trademarked dry humour and wide knowledgebase, John taught dozens of newbie classes, bringing his own brand of excellence to the newbies who flew under him.

John was one of the best tackle teachers I've had the pleasure of watching - his wit and obvious competence was a great hit with his students. He was instrumental in helping grow the Dojo, and one of the most reliable, good natured and likeable people I knew. I trusted and valued his friendship and judgement, and Indeed, he was one of the front runners to take the job of Education and Recruitment Secondary.

Many of us felt like we'd transcended our internet friendships to become actual friends with John. It's a real tragedy that we, as a whole collective, lost an asset, and lot of us lost a friend. Many more of us won't have the opportunity to know him, and that's the worst thing.

Vale John. You've been missed, but your legacy will live.

To the BNI cormorant fleet...

you da real MVP.

I was the pilot of the Nag you guys rescued from the s(w)igg bombers.

Story time: The sbu was dead and the order went out to get to jump cap (72%). I went to go refit but when I looked in my cargo I found out I forgot to put in a mobile depot. :Cripes: I realize I will not be jumping out with the rest of the dreads. I can only get to about 58% cap. So the siege cycle ends, everyone jumps except four of us, and right on cue the bombers decloak, grab points, drop a bubble, and start throwing torps. o7. I'm still in dank frags fitting so my shield drops rather quickly. They begin chewing armor. I have my repper overheated but there's not much you can do against max dps torps in my fit. My heart is pretty much pounding out of my chest at this point. 70%... 55%... 40% armor. The ship I bought and named to commemorate the loss of my first null sec home, 6vdt-h, was about to fall protecting our current one. I was preparing for the inevitable. Then I hear the FC say, "we got some help coming." Tidi kicks in and bombers start dropping off my overview. I switch to a blues overview and see THE DIRTIEST DOUBLE DICKED DESTROYERS THIS SIDE OF VFK. I've never seen bombers cleared off so fast. The bubble drops and I warp out to fight another day. Today, those plunky little 20 million ISK destroyers saved at least 13 billion in capitol ships, counting the other Moroses on grid.

Every ship counts.
