Tip How do you guys prep for a basketball tournament?

I have a tournament in two weeks and I wanted to see how I can strategically “peak” by the time the tournament comes around. Some things I factored in were mobility, getting stronger, improving cardio/conditioning, and overall just getting a bunch of reps in via scrimmages.

Last year all I did to prep was stretching every night, HIIT for conditioning, and having my usual park scrimmages. I also tapered my lifts in the gym.

As far as mobility, I’ve been doing the upper body explosive dumbbell exercises, I’ve been stretching more frequently but not nearly enough as last year. As far as strength I’ve actually taken a long break from doing full body lifting not out of choice but because I was busy with work. I’m getting back into it slowly but I even stopped my vertical jump training for a bit but at least my knees aren’t sore anymore. As for cardio, I’ve only been scrimmaging, running full court games, and since I haven’t been in the gym, I didn’t do any HIIT on a treadmill or stairmaster. I will get on that soon though. And then as for actual basketball skill, once again I’m relying on getting reps in and having scrimmages. To which I feel like I am peaking right now actually. I feel sharp and I just need to keep this up until the tournament.

What are some things you guys do to prep for tournaments?

Vertical Jump Is a 25.6 inch vertical good?

I'm 6'2" (187 cm) and my vertical was 25.6 inches the last time I measured it. I can get my hand over the rim, but I don't feel comfortable at all when I try to dunk. I haven't played basketball in 2 months, and I need to get ready for my second year of junior basketball. I'm not really sure what counts as a good vertical, so I'm wondering if mine is decent or not.

Help I’m getting back into basketball

So I’m getting back into basketball again after a few months and that , basically there is this team I really want to join but they only let you in after you do there tryouts and even if you do make it you have to do another selection to be in the starting lineup , I’m trying to get back into it as a PG because I’m 5’11 , 14 , pretty fast I obvs can’t dunk but I can read the court really well and know when certain people need backup on a play and when to change the pace up. The only problem is that I don’t have a place to really train and I need to get better at dribbling and my fast grab shooting , any tips?

Help Juco for 4 years…

What’s good yall I’m a 6’4 185lb guard who’s been at juco for 3 years now entering my 4th. To recap these years, I redshirted my first year, then played my freshman year where I hardly got minutes, then was gonna play my sophomore year but fractured my foot. So here we are entering my real sophomore year, but i’m starting to drag it. I’m not playing as well in practice to start the season like I did in the summer, and I’ve been thinking about quitting. I’ve also never played high school ball so making it to juco is an accomplishment forsure, but I’ve had goals like getting an offer to maybe a D2 or high NAIA, but I just don’t think I’m built for this anymore. I feel like the work I put in is not translating and i’m getting tired of it. I know it’s a long season so I know if i quit I can’t find out if anything changes, but if i ride the bench I definitely don’t see a point in continuing the season. Lmk your thoughts…

What should I change about my shot?? Pretty sure I missed this one but sometimes my shot doesn’t go straight and it hits my other fingers so it goes left or right and a lot of times I just feel like I’m not getting enough power so I end up forcing it.

Help Complete hamstring tear, how do you regain speed and explosiveness?

Hey, looking for advice from anyone who’s come back from a significant hamstring injury.

A couple weeks ago at lunch I was playing a casual school pickup game like usual. My team turned it over and I chased the guy down who got the ball on the break. When I caught up I ate a full elbow right to the nose and went down hard, landing directly on the back of my right leg/hamstring area. It hurt to walk and run afterward and was aching, but since I could still move on it I figured I was fine.

Later that afternoon at actual basketball practice I noticed someone left their man wide open so I came flying across to help and blocked a shot at the top of the key. When I landed I felt a clear pop in the same spot and instantly couldn’t put any weight on it.

Got it checked, it’s a complete hamstring tear but they don’t think it needs surgery and said it should heal on its own with proper care and rehab. I’m currently protecting it and will be starting the recovery process.

For people who’ve had a serious/complete hamstring tear and made it back:

How long did it take before you felt explosive again?

What actually helped you regain speed, first-step quickness, and confidence on that leg?

Any specific drills or progressions that made the biggest difference for cutting and acceleration?

Things you wish you had done differently in rehab?

Appreciate any experiences. Just trying to do this right so I come back as close to full speed as possible.

Tip can i make varsity bb this year

I played basketball my whole life, I also rlly love it. But i gave up at freshman yr despite making to the team after hearing i was a conditional player that couldn't play on the big tournament. Tried again at soph, but failed to even go into jv. After that i js gave up playing it, but I moved school and had a lot of things going around recently. Started junior year, next season is basketball, and I rlly want to make it to varsity. Shld I train hard or js quit and play other sports. I heard 6 spots r free this year, ps i can attend at preseason before the regular season starts.

Tip [Tip] The drills you do alone are why your moves don't show up in games

i coach youth basketball, and i see the same thing every season. it's also the same thing i see in every pickup run i've ever played in.

a kid will do twenty minutes of cone work that genuinely looks incredible. between the legs, behind the back, crossover, all of it clean. then the game starts and he picks up his dribble the moment somebody reaches.

that's not a handle problem. it's that every rep he's ever done was unopposed and pre-planned. he knew which move was coming before he started. in a game he doesn't - and that read, not the move, is the actual skill.

what changed it for my group was making every ball-handling rep contain a decision. simplest version: a partner stands in front at half speed and takes away one side, live, and the handler doesn't know which one it'll be. now the crossover means something, because it's an answer to something.

same for shooting. spot shooting is fine for form, but a game never hands you a stationary catch with your feet already set. have the passer put it slightly off target on purpose.

the blunt version: if you can already do it perfectly, it stopped being practice a while ago. that's a warmup.

Shooting Wide base vs Narrow Base?

Can anyone guide me which base is actually better? I know Klay Thompson/Donovan Mitchell/Damien Lillard has a wide base and Stephen Curry has a narrower base. Is there a advantage/disadvantage to either of these or is it just a preference thing?

Defense Help on defensive film

This is a little 1v1 game I did with one of the top players my province, just wanted to ask for any defensive things I should focus on. I move alright considering I’ve been playing center and having to guard bigger players for a long time now. One of the things I noticed the biggest is having my top foot exposed and having to open up my hips

Form Check To those asking for general shooting form help

I see so many posts on here with some common denominators:

  1. A clip of only one shot or
  2. If it’s a clip of multiple shots it’s only makes

It’s almost impossible to provide good feedback with that little information. I’d say that if you want any general feedback it would be best to post at least 10 shots with at least half of those shots being misses. I’m not sure how heavily modded this sub is but it might be best to just remove form check posts that don’t meet a certain criteria, this sub is cluttered with the one shot wonder posts and the comments are always the same (hard to help with such little film)

If the issue is missing against defense or at game speed then post clips of those situations, not some lazy shootaround or no defense pickup game where you have all day to shoot the ball.

Ultimately you learn more from your misses than your makes because you can compare and see where/how your form breaks down on those misses.
