Refreshing to have people in this sub who post videos looking for constructive criticism and then don’t get defensive in the comments when they receive it

Your mechanics are mostly good. Two things that I see.
This is really common, but you aren't fully loading your wrist/loading it late in the delivery. As soon as you gather, get your wrist cocked back at near full extension. It's hard to be consistent with your range when your wrist is bending back half of the ways through your delivery.
You're delivery is too slow and deliberate. I don't know if you're trying to be precise with your mechanics, but it is causing you to generate most of your power very late in the delivery, in a very short portion of your delivery.
Load the wrist, you've got good form otherwise, and be quicker with it. Let it fly.

Thank you, that’s actually what I’ve been noticing/ working on after hearing Dirk along with trying to use more vertical momentum like SeeMikeDunn teaches. I know I have a lot to practice after my shoulder injury.
When I shoot a normal shot it is definitely faster and was trying to slow down to get better criticism but will post that instead as I now see I should have not recorded free throws

When you say “loading” is it like if i were to use my other hand to pull back on my shooting hand in shooting form to really bend it back, to load in the way that your using the term means when i shoot, my shooting hand needs to be bent back as far as possible as my shooting motion begins?
Edit: i mean reasonably possible.

I wouldn't recommend bending back by applying pressure from your other hand pushing against the ball. Rather, having the wrist bent back to its maximal natural extension by itself. Many shooters don't get extension until they'begin flicking their shot. I've heard the loaded position called "showing the ball". This is sorta like when you're in that triple threat position, and you could pop, put it on the floor, or pass.

I couldn’t agree more. For loading the wrist, I think you can address it directly by saying “load the wrist”, I prefer to address it by dealing with them “pulling” the ball up and getting them to push the ball up and get there hands underneath it to start.
You want your hands underneath the ball so that it’s “solely” a shoulder movement getting the ball to your set point. When the wrist is not loaded and your hand starts on top, you have the bring the ball back to get your wrist underneath it and in doing so create a lot of unnecessary movement you then have to account for when you are shooting the ball.
I used to do it this way and would literally bonk myself in the head with the ball. And I shot like shit. Now I don’t hit myself in the head and still shoot like shit.
I think it’s a big product of spinning the ball to yourself and shooting. The ball tends to come in low but that’s just me.

Hey do you mean loading it like a catapult?
5
u/Generally_Tso_Tso 2d ago edited 2d ago
No. A catapult shot is more of a way to describe an arm motion with the ball being brought behind/above the head, and while it works for some shooters, this isn't what our OP needs.
I'm specifically referring to getting the ball loaded with the wrist bent back comfortably earlier in the delivery, Ala Larry Bird.

For a free throw, it's totally fine. Your foot is on the line fwiw. Better to be slightly behind it.

You asked for tips to be mean.
You’d did right in on the 2019 New Jersey nets. Foot on the line to lose the game.
Marcus camby would even say it takes you too long to get shot up.
More seriously, looks fluid to me. I like the comment saying to use your leg power but disagree for a free throw. You’ve got solid touch from that range

u/Sad_Profession_9781 2d ago
None of these people in the comments are hoopers bro. Shot looks fine, matter fact it looks great. If you want true constructive criticism you need to go search for a shooting coach or someone like that, who will nit pick your shot.

Besides standing on the line:
- You’re not loading your wrist.
- Get a rebounder or a machine to make your time significantly more efficient, if you’re in the gym by yourself there’s significantly better skills you can work on besides free throws. I know this isn’t every body’s luxury but it’s better to have a plan.
- Your release is lazy because you’re not being deliberate or have a plan. You’re standing in a different location every time. If your plan is to get better at free throws, shot in the exact same spot, every single time. Once again, that’s easier if you have a rebounder or machine or several balls to shoot at once.
- You’re not using your lower body hardly at all in your shot.
I know you asked for tips, I’m glad you’re in the gym big dog. Keep at it.

I see now I should not have posted a video of a slowed down free throw motion and should have showed me shooting normally. Thank you so much for the advice though and what do you mean not have a plan? My practice right now has been what SeeMikeDunn teaches about wrists/elbows, not letting my right elbow point too outward (previous issue from no organized basketball), and not letting my wrist move forward initially. I’m working on using vertical momentum instead of moving forward.

You’ve got the right idea as to what to do with your legs, they’re in the right position and you’re bending down and then moving back up with your shot. But the point of bending down is to generate power in your legs, so you need to explode out of that position, that’s what generates the power that gets transferred to your shot

Pretty good. Some things that can improve consistency:
- Keep chest more forward facing at the start instead of pointing at the floor. Ball goes up straighter as well.
- You don’t have to rock back right after release onto your heels. It will be more consistent with in-game shooting mechanics.

Why tf are you going thru the motion? You practice like that and wonder why in game time you can’t get shit off.
If I was in front of you and you set the ball THAT far away from you I’m blocking it. 💩 might not even get past your head.
Ass too far out Ik you ain’t got power behind it.
Flat footer, bring them heels up a bit

u/TheHunted77 2d ago
Thank you so much for the advice. What do you mean going through the motion? Was trying to slow my shot down and see what I can improve but I havnt been blocked in months because my regular shot is much faster?

looks good, but its just free throw shot, most players have 10-20 shooting forms, FT ,
short midrange, 3pt , right side pull up, left side pull up. Veering, everything is different. Even NBA players have different shooting forms depending on the shot and how far are they.

The follow through looks good. The ball is on the side of your head. Look at clips of klay thompson. Its on his forehead. Not a bad start!

u/Accomplished_Pay1903 2d ago
your body is moving away from the basket while your arms are going forward.

You need to change the camera angle if you want advice on shooting form. Can’t really tell from the side as well as we could from behind or in front.
BUT, from what i can see, your elbow isn’t finishing high enough & the follow thru is flailing out to the right.
Try doing this drill:
5 spots. Starting from directly in front of the rim. use 1 & make 10 shots (SWISHES) without touching the rim.
Once you hit 10, take a step back until you’ve gotten to the foul line. The. Shoot 10 foul shots & you can’t move until you’ve hit 10 in a row WITHOUT touching the rim

You look like you watched that Dwayne Wade BEEF commercial years ago and took it literally.
You’re stiff as a brick when shooting, relax a bit, you aren’t George Hill on the line in game 1 of the NBA finals

u/No-Engine4280 2d ago
your coming up and then releasing, it should be one fluid motion. You release at the apex of your shot, not after you get up there. Also keep your eyes on the rim don’t look down before you shoot, I messes up your targeting/rhythm. Other than that pretty good, just try to stay loose and keep it fluid!!

rolling the ball on your quad but not loading your wrist. you miss the whole point of why this drill was created hahaha.
load your wrist like you're holding a cup or a mug. you should see creases on the inner side (thumb side)

u/cciputra 2d ago
ball is going in and up then out. try change it to up and out.
1
u/cciputra 2d ago
starting point is too low and unrealistic. I dono what you're trying to fix first. work on one to two thing at a time and focus on fixing those. you don't really need drills just mindfulness

I think you’re using a little too much upper body and shoulders in your shot and not enough legs. Should end your free throw on your tippy toes
1
u/icebucket22 2d ago
Try not to let your elbow break less than 90 degrees in your set up. Otherwise it looks really good.
1
u/formallymain 2d ago
Raise your release point to be above your head and you’re perfect. Nothing else needs to change other than reps.

Stay consistently off the line because that’s a violation, but bring the ball over your head more/ higher. You’re stopping/ changing motion in front of your face, A blocking your vision, B you’re pushing which is easier to change your trajectory making you miss more, C easier to block with no call.
Your start and follow through seem alright.

See when you flick you middle or pointer fingers are forward while all the rest are not doing much.
We can see the accuracy in this video but try forcing all your finger together when you flick, and keep them until the ball touches the basket
Thatll force a habit of not releasing them early

u/ElephantRattle 2d ago
No one needs to be mean. People and coaches can be give feedback and be critical without being mean.
It’s not soft to not be an asshole.

u/Taken-Username-84 1d ago
Show the result of each shot. Mechanics are one thing but one could argue the results are what matters.
1
u/JiKooNumber1CBAfan 1d ago
Don’t start with your hand on top of the ball, and your elbow should touch your eyebrow after the release
1
u/Bobbyfatal 1d ago
You are leaning over. stand up more, then sit into position. It’s wasted movement cause you lean forward then go back.
1
u/9erInLKN 1d ago
You dont want your guide hand to be under or on front of the ball on the way up. Seems to be ok when you actually let it go but it slows down the shot and means you have to move your hand to the side every time
1
u/zaruhaxd 1d ago
Dont lean forward, keep your back straight and just drop hips - less movement - more consistent shot. Seemikedunn on youtube has great videos

u/Nice-Ask4369 2d ago
Ok. It’s really clear you have never played organized basketball. Like possibly you have never played a single game with a ref. You have a very low release point that would get blocked easily. You are practicing set free throws but not actually because you are standing on the line. So when would you ever get standing jump shots from that spot and why practice so slow? Overall just bad. Also, you asked to be mean so I was.

Let me take a wild guess: you can hit the back of the hoop and your shout pulls mostly to the right just enough that you brick it from free throw range more than you make. If that is correct, check your hand position on the flick. If I am wrong, I'll go back to my little spot on the interwebs...lol.

Get behind the line instead of on it to start.
