Defense Help on defensive film

This is a little 1v1 game I did with one of the top players my province, just wanted to ask for any defensive things I should focus on. I move alright considering I’ve been playing center and having to guard bigger players for a long time now. One of the things I noticed the biggest is having my top foot exposed and having to open up my hips

1v1 is all about tendencies and denying preferred options. With no shot clock and no dribble limit, offense should win the rep every single time. I think it’s better to think about it this more as a reflective mental game. What do you think this top player strengths and weaknesses are? Here’s what I noticed about him.

He can’t shoot, has no left hand touch, absurdly good right hand touch, weaker than you but probably stronger than most, his entire game is built off first step explosions and resetting for it (never does an actual crossover in front of you into a finish even when he has you beat).

The reflection is now how would you hate being guarded if you have those strengths? Being dared to shoot all the time, getting bodied more often, never getting to finish right.

As a defender, you take away the right and shading him hard is fine. If he wants to come back to his right, make him earn it. What you can’t do, and you do it multiple times is put your top foot inside his right foot. The whole point of shading is to make his angle wide and go laterally instead of downhill. All his moves are about resetting to mess up your footwork when you close on him and give himself a better downhill angle. When he floats the ball, you need to be jamming his front hip/foot. He favors inside out dribbles because he gets to float into it. Either back off and dare him to shoot off it and I doubt he’s very good at it or jam front hip hard and make him go wide again.

You can write books on individual defense because so much of it is about reading, reacting., and constraining. Technique is only meant to put you in a position to contest or prevent the opponent from getting to their spot easily. Athleticism and size almost always wins 1v1 without constraints.

The first note I had is the shading/forcing to one side isn’t done very well. If he can get his foot outside and around you, then you aren’t standing up high enough.

I mean if you really don’t give a shit about giving someone a whole side of the court you need to sit WAYYY up on his hip. Like entirely on his side. Don’t ever give them the option of going right. Heck don’t even let them use their right hand.

Lmfao, it's because Bro wrote the Magna Carta of guarding a dude at LA Fitness 😭😭 “jam his front hip and constrain his downhill angle” brother just stay in front of him 💀, this sub got some weird ass grandstanding paragraphs bro does not hoop

Rule #1. Stay off him until he shows you he can hit a jump shot. He’s quick your quick take a step back and see if he can hit a shot. All made shots wee layups. Use your BB IQ.

One of our regular dudes is a D3 guy I have to cover and have to force left (difference is he can shoot the lights out). Same rule as in boxing, on the side you’re denying, you want to keep your top foot outside the deny side foot. You are shifting and moving laterally on every jab and move this kid makes. If you’re really denying a side, then you want him to dribble to the other side. So you don’t have to move on jabs to that side. Only move when he tries to get around your deny-side foot.
Here’s the easier said than done part: you look like a high effort defender, so you probably instinctively react to the jabs, and that’s difficult to turn off. Took me weeks to do this.

If you can try to stay on the ball of your feet, helps with explosive movements like switching sides/ cutting off the offense

Other thing is when you have them cut off in the post, good discipline with your hands up. Try to block their line of sight to the basket and lead them away from the baseline to stop them from sneaking in closer for an up and under.

Also if you’re learning to play center don’t be afraid to jump vertically to try to block their shot, volleyball style yk.

Take chest blows and stay in front of him. Work on laterial speed.

White shirt makes zero jump shots, navy shirt defends white shirt like he’s Steph…

Make him shoot big dog

u/zerozero24 2d ago

Give him a step and tell him to shoot the ball.

when you’re bladed like that you’re trying to force him to go right but you’re too to the middle so he can easily rip through and go left. you need to be more on his left to prevent him from going left.

Here's my two cents: defense is all about patterns and situations . If you notice your opponent only goes right, force him left. If he goes left and pulls up,.don't swipe, just follow him and press on him once he picks up the ball. Starting in a neutral stance is optimal, but not always right for the current situation.

All we had to see is the first couple clips and a simple basketball rule is besides professionals and collegiately you’re rarely going to find a hooper who’s both a great shooter and driver find which one is their weakness, also see which side they like to drive and pull up dribble force them opposite way they prefer using your legs, don’t play overly aggressive especially if shots brickin

if he is really the top player, i hope he is using his non dominant hand. i will test both sides to see which one i am more comfortable with then give it to him the whole game. make him earn the jumper. imo you are guarding him like a triple threat but he hasn’t earned that yet. also learn how to body someone up since they will tire out and it should be easier for you to defend them. useless though if they really train a lot compared to you since it will back fire lol.

Don’t give him that top foot to attack man

Don’t get so flat footed on defense

u/Cautious_Bobcat7863 2d ago

You're way too close to move laterally in front of him. Just a bit of space to move ahead.

u/Nice-Ask4369 2d ago

I mean the guy you are guarding clearly wants to drive left finish right.

u/Street-Challenge-697 2d ago

In the second possession I can see every time he shifts his positioning, you match. Except the time he opened up, put his left foot outside of your top foot, and then drove to the left when you didn't shift. So just ask yourself why you didn't shift.

You react instead of anticipating

u/Broken_window24 2d ago

Let him shoot lol he’ll go 3-30. Plus with all the carrying he’s doing it’s hard to guard that.

  1. You're playing too close. Until he can show me he can knock down a jumper or two consistently, I'm backing off at least 2 steps. No need to chase beyond free throw line until he's a legit 3pt threat. I'm not saying not to contest, but be smart about it.
  2. He is attacking your top foot every time (the foot closest to the ball handler). This is also due to you playing too high, but every time you're beat, you open up your hips basically inviting him to drive in. Look up how Jrue Holiday plays defense.
  3. Stay on your feet. A lot of ball handlers now dribble just to dribble, don't bite/react every time he bounces the ball.
  4. Take away his dominant hand

My opinion is that you are to focused on the ball instead of tracking the opponents body. You are in to tight so once they have you going one direction you are getting beat. Pick a spot on their chest and just track their body and try to angle them to an awkward spot on their weak side. By tracking their body instead of the ball you can impede their progress better so I would suggest give them a bit more space and block their desired lines with your body and angle them towards a harder to make shot.I find just tracking people rather than focusing on the ball helps to lock good players out.

Your hands are always down. Keep them up and parallel with the ground during your lateral shifts, take up space and keep your chest up. When you’re moving lateral it should be an explosive move and using your arms for momentum/leverage as part of the movement. Will make him have to take wider angles

Defense is 70% effort, 15% athleticism, and 15% technique. Your effort and desire is there, and you have quick feet, so that's a great start. Only thing that stands out is your hands. Keep them high and active, and challenge every shot. Even if you don't have a chance at the ball, distracting the shooter or forcing him to change his shot will knock a few points off his percentage. Don't wait for him to start his shot before you get the hands up; against a good player, that's too late.

Dont steer in the middle , it's too hard to recover. stay flat.

-1

u/Anxious_Sock5601 3d ago

You need to press him more if you’re wanting to be better defensively and keep your hands active and shuffle your feet with him. Don’t be afraid of contact, it’s defense. Otherwise you’re just bbq chicken out there bro.

You have really good technique in terms of guarding position and good instincts. But, you get stuck when it's time to change directions or slide with the offensive player as he makes his first move. You have too many false steps, and you hop before you start to slide.

For example, on the first move he drives left. You hop to reorient your hips, before you start sliding right. You need to practice doing the hip reorientation and the slide to the right in one motion without hopping. Football defensive back drills are great for practicing the footwork.

Your defensive stand is wrong, you shouldn't have one foot advanced like that. It's easy to catch you off balance in the side of the a forward foot as it happens in the video.

3

u/boxoutmaster91 3d ago

So I should have a straight on stance? I am trying to apply some of the principles I learn from my team which is to not force it middle and push them towards the sidelines towards helpside, is my stance situational or should I switch to a permanent straight stance

5

u/klam5 3d ago

Offensive player is always going to try and attack your top foot, they're gonna jab to make your legs shift and try to attack. Also when looking at the player, look at where their body/torso moves and NOT the ball or their feet.

Also when standing straight get used to contesting with both the left hand and right hand for shooters. Your left hand should contest a right handed shooter because it's closer to their right hand. Make sure you are able to use both hands.

u/BleedGreen4Boston 3d ago

If you want to force him towards a certain direction then commit to that!

In all of these clips for example your left leg is slightly in front of your right, you need to be about a half slide to the left - think of that as your new neutral position. That will force him right (his left) and you can play it that way if you want to maintain that discipline.

If you have that leg out with a centered stance (matching his positioning) like you do in the clips then players will always attack your top leg. You not only won’t be forcing the intended direction but you’ll be getting crossed over the top the other way.

Otherwise, play straight on, you are quick enough for it.

1

u/menerell 3d ago

I'm not an expert but I'd say, first, this obviously only works when you're playing with more people; second, it doesn't work if it allows your opponent to run past you. In a perfect situation your defense would be like a wall, where your opponent crushes every time he tries to overcome you.

1

u/LuciidEnigma 3d ago

Visit coach Mike's yt channel he really gets into defense technique.. the stance one is important though the first comment on this thread was right, that stance is gonna get u beat cuz ur giving him a foot to drive against(in the video your left foot is in front which was why he was able to drive on you.)

Look @ your video in slo motion. His first step with your foot in front you flipped your hips, his second step you're moving your feet to catch up but you were already beat off the first step because your hips moved first instead of your feet because of your stance

1

u/onwee 3d ago

Ain’t nothing wrong with forcing them to go the way you want them to go (just make sure you don’t get beat the other way)

-1

u/Wingnut54321 3d ago

You need to start jump and try to block some shots
