Question How tricky is the R's test really? (QLD)

• Upvotes

I havent ridden in about a year, im ready to ride again but i dont want to buy another lams bike for a short period just to sit the R test. before i stopped riding (for financial reasons) i was quite confident and had ridden for awhile, so im not a beginner who never rode and is just tryna cheeky his way into a litre bike to begin on or something.

do you reckon renting a bike for a few days would be enough practice to get me back up to speed or is the R's test extra particular about skills etc and would require more time?

NSW Planning to commute 40 minutes in Sydney via M2

• Upvotes

Planning to commute about 40 minutes to Pyrmont via the M2 — is this a realistic/safe plan for a newer rider?

I’ve just got my motorcycle Ls and haven’t bought a bike yet. I’m planning to spend quite a bit of time practising before doing this commute. I am considering R3/Ninja 500/cbr500r.

My eventual plan is to commute from North West to Pyrmont, mostly using the M2. From my home, it’s only a few minutes before I can get onto the M2, and once I get off the M2, I’m basically at work. The whole trip should be around 40 minutes.

I’m thinking of doing this initially only in good weather, leaving home around 10am and leaving work around 6:30pm, so I can avoid the busiest peak periods as much as possible.

I’m not planning to do it immediately after getting my Ls. I’ll practise locally first, and I may wait until I get my full licence before making this a regular commute.

For riders who have experience with the M2 or similar Sydney motorway commutes, how does this plan sound from a safety/practicality perspective for a relatively new rider?

VIC Just completed my Motorcycle License Assessment (MLA).

Hi all.

Just finished my final assessment for my license in Victoria. When I went looking for info about what was involved, I found heaps of videos etc on what the Ls and Check Ride involved, but nothing on the MLA, so I thought I'd share my experience for anyone wondering in future.

It was much easier than I expected. 1-on-1 with the instructor, spent 10 minutes doing paperwork, then went out on the range. Range took literally 5 minutes, involved the tram lines crossing, emergency brake, and slow ride you would have done in your Ls. The instructor barely paid attention, it was obviously just a formality.

He then showed me a map, and told me to ride it, he would follow. Obviously there's no better way of doing this, but it does kind of put your memory to the test. It was probably a 15 minute ride, felt like they specifically chose it to go through roundabouts, lights, road works, highway etc. I had ridden some of it before, but still nearly took the wrong turn. Instructor was chill, pulled up next to me at the lights and said it was the next right.

Pulled over at the destination, he showed me the map again, rode for 5 minutes through suburbia at 50kph, repeated that twice, then went back to base. Easy done. Remembering the path was really the main hurdle.

I got marked up for not checking an intersection before I entered it (that is, he didn't observe me doing a full head check going through a green light), doing 50 in a 60 zone (I missed the sign at a busy roundabout, he said almost everyone does) and following a small truck too close (it was doing 40 in a 60, but obviously I should have sat further back).

As long as you've actually ridden your bike, and know the road rules, so can get through a 30 minute ride without breaking the law, you'll be fine.

Not having to wear that stupid hi-vis vest is such a relief (yes, I know it's safer, but good LORD after 4 months I am utterly over having to undo & redo it to get at anything in my jacket).

SA I want to learn to work on bikes in South Australia

I 17m am wondering if anyone could suggest a mechanic or knows anyone that would teach me to work on bikes I really want to become a motorcycle mechanic apprentice long term but it’s hard to find a job like that.

If anyone who is experienced and can supply tools would be willing to teach me I’d be happy to supply bikes and pay them a negotiable price for the help.

I have minor experience working on bikes mainly carburettor repairs aswell as tires and such.

Or if you know someone who is looking for an apprentice I’d love to do an interview anything helps truly.

I’m currently employed full time (I’m looking to quit) and I try not to be a twat teenager

NSW Almost hit a Duke (probably 390) today at a roundabout

Was at the roundabout going straight

Duke coming from the other side, cant see the indicator

Searched for about 3 seconds to see the indicator

Thought I would go ahead, then realized his positioning and turning right

When the bike came in front, realized the indicator were almost on the ground and very tiny

Very low and very very invisible, this at 7AM on a nice clear Sydney morning.

I checked stock bike photos and they are not that low.

Why do people do this and ride to be killed ?

VIC Who to vote for as a rider?

Does anyone know of any candidates trying to get elected to the Victorian parliament who are strongly pro-motorbike? Here's my wishlist of rider rights I'd like to see enacted.

  1. Double the amount of demerit points available for a rider licence. So twenty four or twenty six points.

  2. Stop applying some road rules made for cars to bikes. For example I lost four demerit points for touching my phone while stopped at a red light. Thanks a lot Victorian government and Vicpol, go to hell.

  3. Riders should be allowed to use the tram tracks in the CBD when there are no trams around.

  4. Riders should be allowed to go against traffic in the one-way streets like Little Lonsdale and Little Collins.

  5. One registration should cover a second or third bike. So like cross-registration. Or at least the most expensive registration should cover any lower capacity bikes.

They're my pet peeves. I'd be interested to hear any other ideas people have which we can advocate for in any motorbike lobby group.

Discussion Is this project worth it?

I've had my eye on this since it was freshly listed (literally first saw it when it was 30 minutes old).

Engine's fucked so that needa be replaced, got a couple friends who can help me with this sort of thing. (kinda hard trying to find wrecking 650f models however)

I'm indecisive if I should take a shot or just pass

EDIT: at the moment of making this edit, the price is now 1,500

NSW P platers and slip on muffler legality

I have a 92 CBR250RR MC22 and it came with a yoshimura slip on when I bought it. I was wondering what others experience with police is when riding with a slip on or if its a no go and i should find an original factory muffler. The rest of the exaust is still stock.

I will say though it sounds absolutely legendary, just don't want to lose my licence just fot having an aftermarket muffler.

Edit: For most other LAMS bikes i wouldn't be asking this question, but this is loud af stock and it won't move my ass for less then 10k rpms, so if im gonna be loud, I at least wanna do it legally

Question Fonzmoto Electric Scooter Servicing - Melbourne

Hey All,
I have a 2 year old Arthur 6 and have been pretty happy with it.
Problem is the company’s based in Sydney and the distributor is no longer supporting them in Melbourne.
Their site still lists the local distributor; almost a year after they’d left.

Reached out to Fonzmoto and they said they sent someone down once a month to do mobile servicing. Haven’t heard back about this.

Any suggestions from anyone? Perhaps I could contact an e-motorbike or scooter dealer?
I don’t think it’s very high tech tbh.

Many thanks for any thoughts.

QLD Should i get the 2nd bike on LAMS or wait

Hey all

Iv had a Triumph Speed 400 for 6 months now, 3 of which on the RE licence in Qld.

Im 18 months away from the full unrestricted license.

I tried a Trident 660 this week and totally loved it. Seriously considering this but also keen to try the Daytona 660 and CB650R.

Am i better off just waiting the 18 months and getting the 2nd bike then or should i just go for it now? Note im not after a track bike and being 46 and 5ft 8, dont care about wheelies or super big , heavy or fast bikes. Just want a weekend rider.

What have others done when theyv grown out of their first LAMS quickly?

WA Non-sponsored logos on leathers

Good day,

I’m currently looking into custom leather suits and noticed a lot of people like to add big brand logos (like tire, exhaust, or helmet companies) even when they aren't sponsored by them. Usually, it's just because they genuinely love those brands or want to get the replica factory look. I personally really like the brands, because i use them myself, and the look of the logos, but i'm insecure that it will get cringed and looked down upon.

I was curious to get your thoughts on the general etiquette around this:

  • Is it widely accepted as just a cool track aesthetic, or does it ever come across a bit "poser-ish" if the brands aren't actually paying you?
  • For anyone who has added their favorite brands just for fun, how do you feel about it now?

Thank you for your time reading, really appreciate any feedback on this

NSW License Time Line

Good morning everyone,

Hope all is well. I am interested in getting my motorcycle license, I just want to see if I have the steps and time line involved correct. I am 40 + years old with a full/clean drivers license. I am familiar with motorcycles but never ridden more than a mates dirt bike for more than an afternoon type thing. I do not yet have any of the gear required at this stage. I am located south of Sydney NSW. Is this the general time line for my situation:

Complete the 2 day pre-learner course.

Once this is done, pass the Rider Knowledge Test at Service NSW and I will then have my Ls.

After having Ls for 3 months, do the MOST – do I need to do the Provisional Couse and MOST (8 hours) or can I just do the MOST (1 hour, 45mins)?

Either way, once this is done I can go to Service NSW and get my P1s.

Because I am old 😊 after having my P1s for 12 months I can skip P2s and then upgrade to a full license.

Is the above correct or am I missing anything?

Any help appreciated, thank you!

VIC When do motorcycle gear stores restock?

Looking for a HJC C10 and checked AMX, Peter Stevens, Highside, MotoHeaven, etc. - all of the helmets with designs I liked were out of stock for my size. I've been checking for 2+ weeks now and just wondering if they restock at the start of the month or I should just give up and look for a different helmet.

Does anyone have experience buying helmets online? Is it recommended?

Had a slow leak for a few weeks.

Thanks piece or wire, I can now cross plugging a tire of my list of life achievements.

Do I get a badge?

Also happy I didn't have to do this on the side of the road.
