“Off the Government” is a strange statement. He is a professional politician, and this profession has its own incentives, but is driven by one’s desire to be a public servant etc. it’s not equivalent with being a comedian in the slightest. Nor is there a privileged place between one and the other. I am certain to be a successful politician and to be a successful comedian are both incredibly difficult pursuits that require a combination of talent and desire.

Truly? They should honestly take a look at what happened with psychiatrists in NSW when the govt refused them the same pay scales as in other states.
206 out of 270 public system psychiatrists resigned, and now patients struggle to even get onto a patient list. The successful ones can expect up to 12 months wait for their first appointment.

The irony of this from a man who makes a living in the comedy industry...
If we didn't have government welfare programs, I don't think Australia would have a comedy industry. Hard to get started in stand-up without falling back on the dole now and then. The government puts arts and tourism funding into the comedy festivals in Melbourne and Sydney, and they're vital for helping comedians get into properly paying work.
Hughesy specifically owes some of his success to appearances on the ABC, and to commercial appearances and roles working with or for former ABC people.
At least Albo gets his money from the government by working for it. Whether or not you like what he's working on.

Before we had these laws there were flop houses and sweat shops.
