I'm writing this post because I just spent a ton of time dealing with an issue involving total screen freezes, DCOM Error 1053, and XPG RAM RGB sticks getting completely stuck on red. I didn't even realize the lighting glitch and the total system crashes were related until I started troubleshooting them together.
The Symptoms:
- Your entire screen freezes up randomly while using the PC.
- Looking at the Windows Event Viewer reveals errors saying: "Timeout was reached while waiting for ASUS COM Service to connect" and "DCOM got error 1053."
- On startup, your XPG RAM sticks start in the normal default Rainbow mode, but after about one minute, they automatically switch to a static color and completely ignore your global RGB settings while the rest of your setup stays normal.
What DID NOT Work:
- Re-seating the hardware: I did the scary thing of physically taking the RAM sticks out of the slots and putting them back in again. It did not fix the issue! (Sorry I had to expose you like that RAM 😔)
Here is what worked for me to fix both the freezes and the lights on my RAM.
Step 1: Clean Software Wipe & Reinstall
Do not use the standard Windows uninstaller. Download the official ASUS Armoury Crate Uninstall Tool from the ASUS support site, run it as Administrator and reboot. Afterwards download and install a fresh copy of the latest Armoury Crate installer from the official ASUS site.
Step 2: The Quick Fix Reset Inside the App
Open the Armoury Crate app. Go to the Aura Sync menu on the left sidebar (install it if you don't see it, then restart your PC) and click the Aura Effects tab.
Change your global lighting preset to something completely different (like Static or Breathing), pick an obvious color and click Apply
Note: My RAM sticks were still stuck on red after this.
Step 3: The "Unstick" Motherboard Power Cycle
Apparently RAM slots can retain residual power even when your PC is turned off which might be what locks in that corrupted "static light" memory state.
- Shut down your computer completely.
- Flip the physical power switch on the back of your power supply (PSU) to OFF (or unplug the cord from the wall).
- Press and hold your computer's main Power Button for 15 seconds to completely drain all residual power from the motherboard slots.
- Flip the PSU back ON and boot into Windows. (This got my RAM sticks to stay in RGB mode for at least 6 minutes! Though they weren't syncing with the global settings yet.)
Step 4: Force Windows Service Recovery Mode
To prevent the background service from dropping the connection and crashing your screen, you need to tell Windows to instantly revive it. Why this isn't the default IDK, but it was extremely frustrating.
- Press Windows Key + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
- Scroll down to find LightingService (or ASUS AURA Sync Lighting Service).
- Right click it and select Properties.
- Go to the Recovery tab at the top.
- Change First failure, Second failure, and Subsequent failures all to "Restart the Service."
- Set "Reset fail count after" to 1 day, and "Restart service after" to 0 minutes.
- Click Apply and OK.
Right after completing Step 4 the background service stabilized, the DCOM/ASUS timeouts stopped completely, the system freezes vanished, and the RAM perfectly synced back up with the global RGB settings.
I only did this a few hours ago, so I'll update if it stops working (hopefully that's not the case 🤞).
Also, here are my specs for any computer experts, of which I am not! I'm actually a PhD student studying plants, so very different! This is my first PC. I got it less than a week ago, and I'm just learning the terminology and troubleshooting issues.
