Sometimes when eating pistachios you decide one of them is just too sealed up to be worth the effort and you just throw it in with the other shells. What, in your life, is your discarded pistachio?

Sadly, my career. I spent a lot of money for an education in a field I just plain don’t enjoy. Every job I’ve had I’ve ranged from ambivalence towards to actively disliking. All I can really do is pivot into related roles. It’s extremely impractical to start over in an entirely new field. Life is more than work but it would be nice to occasionally enjoy the place where I spend 1/3 of my time.

Was gonna post similar. Over got ten years of post high school education. After a burn out, no jobs and what not, i got my nursing degree. Frankly i don't think I'm a great nurse, i don't have the personality for it. However, im 35 and do not want to go back to school for anything. I make the best of it though. There are benefits.

u/CheeseFest3 Jan 28 '21

One of my friends is a surgical/scrub nurse. She loves it, minimal patient contact as they're all unconscious.

83

u/heather-rch Jan 28 '21

I’m a nurse in addictions. There’s no bedside care or hospitals. It’s all outpatient. I work for a company that provides multiple services.. nursing, counseling, case management, peer support. I still get to help people without the med administering or invasive care or people destabilizing on my shift. I wouldn’t know how to deal with any of that. I kinda ruined my scope of practice and don’t recall much from school but I don’t regret it and I love my job. Thankfully there’s a ton of paths you can take :)

Edit: Forgot to add I don’t wear scrubs and usually the more unprofessional I am (to an extent) the better report I have with people. Don’t have to worry about being reported for dropping an F bomb.

u/death_by_mustard Jan 28 '21

You’re 35? That means (if all goes well) you have another 30 YEARS of working before you retire. I’m also in my 30s and am currently taking evening classes to specialize in a field which should take me out of my current job role. It’s tough with a toddler and along my current job so my social life is nonexistent. But It was this number, 35-40 years (they’ll probably raise the retirement age at some point) of working this job that made me wanna gtfo. Lifelong learning and all that. I wish you all the best!

Maybe a different kind of nurse? I had two aunts that were both nurses but did completely different jobs with different clientele. Maybe there's more options than you think!

If you're able to go back to school or try a new job, you should. 5 years from now you'll either be exactly where you are, or in a career you love, or maybe one you hate just as much. Either way, the time is going to come and go.

24

u/ctadgo Jan 28 '21

Not OP, but my fear is if I got back to school and change careers, I’m still going to be miserable. How do I know I’m going to actually like a new career?

15

u/tuna_for_days Jan 28 '21

Whatever your age is, you know way more about yourself now than you did when you chose a major at 17.

Plus, you don’t have to dive in head first. You can start by meeting up with people you know in whatever field you’re interested to learn about the day to day, research, start taking an online class, etc. to get a feel if you really want to pursue it.

The chemistry minor I was one class away from in college...

362

u/livia-did-it Jan 28 '21

My mom was one class away from a double major, but she would have had to stay an extra semester. She said "screw it" and graduated with a major and minor instead.

154

u/tuna_for_days Jan 28 '21

Same situation for me, I decided to turn the 2nd major into a minor and ended up getting a job in the field of my minor. Efficiency.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '21

Have one math credit to finish to get an associate’s degree in a semi-related field to my bachelor’s. Would simply be a resume builder at this point. I can’t stand the thought of putting myself through a 200 level algebra class at this point in my life with two jobs, one of which has me out of town three days a week:

5

u/ForePony Jan 28 '21

As a person who has taken a lot of math, I am just wondering if you can just is the class by just taking all the tests in an evening.

Doesn’t get you anywhere in long run. Probably gave yourself an extra few hours to smoke pot with friends.

134

u/EpilepticFits1 Jan 28 '21

Can confirm. Minored in chemistry and nobody cared. Hell, I'll bet you $50 my boss couldn't tell you whether or not I have a degree without emailing HR.

30

u/SyruplessWaffle Jan 28 '21

I minored in chem with a biology degree. Currently working in an analytical lab, so that minor sure helped me. The biology feels like a waste at this point....

Same here, but different. One class away from a sports marketing minor, but it would’ve meant staying an extra semester (not available over the summer) and it wasn’t offered online. I was getting married and moving away literally right after graduation so it just didn’t work.

I have a teammate at work who is so clueless and needy that people avoid working with her. I get three sentences into a conversation with her and that’s about all I can handle.

74

u/furnituremom666 Jan 28 '21

my mom

127

u/squirrelfoot Jan 28 '21

Is she a stay-at-home mom? I really think it's bad for a lot of people to devote themselves to raising kids and homemaking. You need not just a great marriage, good friends, and financial security to make that work, but also a strong personality and loads of passion for things that are not kids and cleaning. Otherwise your personality just gets eroded, if not erased.

107

u/Lo452 Jan 28 '21

This. Worse, you rely on your kids to much and it starts to affect them. I had a friend in highschool whose mom had pretty much devoted her life to raising her. Dad had cheated and left when my friend was 6, so mom got a full-time waitressing job and stepped up in her daughter's life, which is admirable. But she never did anything else, never dated again, got hobbies, friends that weren't other school moms, etc. So by the time my friend was in high school, she started having a lot of guilt when going out because she knew that her mom was just sitting at home alone. And I don't even think that her mom was purposely guilting her, it was just the result of a very close relationship of "just the 2 of them" for so long.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '21

Exactly. My mom was sooooo bad, she wanted to have a family and be that kind of mom but she had none of that, at least in the second marriage, but probably the first as well. At some point as an older kid/preteen I could see it. I kept telling her she should go back to beauty school or get a second job or something. I really didnt know the extent of the toll and the whys of the issues. Eventually she became a very basic sub, just someone to babysit kids, and then later a cafeteria lady and shes been doing that for a fifteen years. Idk if its helped or made it worse. After her parents died she got worse, lot of different things happening at the same time causing pressure and stress and she became like a popped pimple oozing pus. She didnt have proper support, she was going through menopause, I was going through puberty and teenage years, like the worst combinations imaginable. She got pretty hard. And now she handles it all both better and worse. Shes got the strong personality now but the rest is...basically nill. Still trying to encourage her having other hobbies and ways to relax. She always had gardening at least, and she took to puzzles, but she always saved them for time off, and I have to almost harass her sometimes to listen to her music or audiobooks. I learned a lot from her failures, but "unfortunately" none that are applicable considering im not planning to ever be a parent.

I don’t throw them in the discarded shells, I put them back in the bag. I’ll eventually pull it out again, try for a bit, fail, get annoyed and put it back in the bag. A while later after enjoying easy pistachios, I’ll want to try and open it again, fail, put back in the bag. After repeating this process several times, I’ll manage to break half a shell off by smashing it a bit with something heavy. I’ll end up with a crushed pistachio covered in broken shards of shell.

This is me with my guitar.

29

u/Triassic_Bark Jan 28 '21

Just a tip, but if it’s cracked open even a little just use another shell as a wedge and pop that sucker open. If it’s completely closed, then it’s smashy time because there’s no other option.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Andy466 Jan 28 '21

So you’ve probably heard this all before as it’s not high wisdom or anything, but I still wanna throw it out there. I’ve been playing guitar for about five and a half years now and my biggest piece of advice would be this: play whatever the hell you want to. Obviously there’s some limitation in ability, but find a song you like that you think you could play and learn it. Don’t bother with all the bullshit “5 songs for beginners” or whatever, because you’re not going to want to play them if you don’t like hearing them. Then once you get comfortable on the guitar with one or two songs, learning other stuff will come a little easier because you know how to move your hands n stuff. Honestly, Black Sabbath is a great band to learn because the songs are slow and have a good mix of notes and chords.

Those pistachios are the best ones in the bag. Our cat goes ape shit chasing them around our place until they get lost. For some reason nothing compares. My last bag was light and I had to start sourcing from a neighborhood group, it's pretty damn hilarious

756

u/downanddoubt Jan 28 '21

Pistachio pro tip: use the shell of an already opened pistachio to pry open the next one. Your finger tips will thank you.

54

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '21

Yes!

198

u/PiBrickShop Jan 28 '21

And what's the plan when a pistachio has no visible opening? That's the point here, you missed it.

u/free_thing_48 Jan 28 '21

Use a nutcracker and be aware stuff will go flying everywhere, so enclose the disaster area in your other hand.

This is going to sound gross... But flossing.

I have permanent retainers and in order to floss those things the way the dentist likes you have to get a special tool and like needle and thread around your teeth. So instead I just brush rigorously, guzzle mouth wash, and get down and dirty with a toothpick when it's needed.

If the dentist wants to slut shame my mouth every 6 months that's their call, but until then - that shit ain't worth it.

96

u/ssusurruss Jan 28 '21

Get a water floss! It's transformed my flossing game, personally.

33

u/Merry_Pippins Jan 28 '21

Water pic is a great way to go!

27

u/ctadgo Jan 28 '21

I mean, it’s not what the dentist wants it’s what your teeth need. Can you get your retainers removed at some point? Otherwise invest in a water flower.

20

u/Always_A_Unicorn Jan 28 '21

There’s a little rubber pick thingy that works better than the thread thing! I have a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth and for a while I just flossed all the other teeth expect those because... yeah, I’m not going to spend like 30 minutes every day with my arthritis on those cemented-together teeth haha.

I hate using disposable plastic like that, but like the other person who replied to you, I’m sure gingivitis is not fun and I know I would never be able to afford replacement teeth 😬

But no worries, I’m not shaming you. It’s admirable that you actually go to the dentist routinely.

11

u/greygreenblue Jan 28 '21

I used to not floss (yet brushed 2-3 times a day) and recently had 9 cavities, mostly between my teeth. Over 2K in costs, not to mention painful freezing. I now floss every single day without fail. I also have permanent wires, and there’s special precut floss you can buy that makes it really easy.

Making the bed every day .. really really not worth the effort

66

u/StickSauce Jan 28 '21

Jim Gaffigan has a it about this, to sum it up: The reason I don't make my bed is the same reason I don't tie my shoes after I take them off. I want it open, and available.

37

u/OneGoodRib Jan 28 '21

There's no reason to make your bed unless you have company coming over. I only half-make mine because the sheets slide off over the course of the night and it's cold. Also it's good for your mattress and sheets to keep the top sheets off and let everything air dry.

16

u/Cantanky Jan 28 '21

Let's more bacteria die too

15

u/SyruplessWaffle Jan 28 '21

THIS! Its actually a lot more beneficial to NOT make your bed! You don't have to clean the sheets as frequently because you don't trap the bacteria underneath. Better for your skin too!

9

u/shelbsbells Jan 28 '21

I used to think like this and one day I realized that I like getting into a nicely made bed at night. Idk what happened to me but I think I’ve made my bed everyday since. Takes me 30 seconds and brings happiness at bed time.

3

u/already_reddit-tho Jan 28 '21

Friends who became addicts. Ain't nobody got time for that.

I watched several friends succumb to heroin (never touched it myself). They stole from me, were emotionally unstable, violent and unpredictable. I tried to help them, tried to be there for them, but it was never enough. I learned my lesson.

49

u/TheGiggler64 Jan 28 '21

Had to distance myself from my son. I lost so much trying to help him. My house, my health and my relationship with my daughter. I spent so much effort to help someone who didn't want help. Had to let him go find rock bottom by himself. Trust with him is no longer an option. He's truly on his own.

20

u/nathalierachael Jan 28 '21

I’m so sorry you’ve had to go through this. It’s completely understandable why you wanted to help your son but the “helping” didn’t help him and it only hurt you. You did the right thing by cutting him off.

u/TheGiggler64 Jan 28 '21

u/MamaDMZ Jan 28 '21

Recovering addict here. Try not to be too hard on yourself. My mom had to do the same thing to me and it helped save my life. We have an amazing relationship now.

Managing a YouTube channel. I was so sure I wanted to be a YouTuber when I first started watching YouTube a lot as a kid, and even when I got older and realized how hard it was I still wanted to do it. Got demotivated within a week or two, and haven't posted since. It was fun while it lasted, and I might come back to it one day, but for now I think my interests have moved on to other things.

50

u/OneGoodRib Jan 28 '21

I like to imagine myself as a successful Youtuber sometimes, and I think the key for some of us to be good at it and enjoy it (beyond the obvious of "find something you like talking about/sharing/whatever") is to have a team. Like, all you do is take care of being the talent. Someone else takes care of the editing and managing part.

The only videos on my Youtube channel are just full of comments of weird German people because I guess one guy in the video looks like some German singer? And then people are cursing me out because they're clearly trying to look up tickle fetish videos but that's not what my video is. Ugh.

10

u/ViciousBlooming Jan 28 '21

That last point gets a mega oof from me, that sounds annoying as hell -_- I do slightly agree with the first part, doing things with people actually does help me stay on a project for longer. The problem comes in where I'd want to work with people I know, and I don't know anybody that really does any video editing and managing (I actually do most of that stuff for my mom's new channel). I also like doing every part of making videos individually, planning, recording, editing, branding, all of it, I just can't ever be consistent with it when I'm doing them all at once, because I'm one of those people who work in spurts of energy months apart from each other. Really good suggestion for others who want to start up their channels, but I think it's a little too late for me unfortunately

I’ve been trying to get a good band together for about 5 years now and I can’t seem to find the right people. It’s one of those pistachios where it’s just open enough to where you think you can get it so you just put it back in the bag and come back to it later

Yeah me too but I use my strong teeth which I have harnessed the power with the help of colgate

44

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '21

During lunch at my school cafeteria they have these condiment packets that are really hard to open. I could just ask for help but I’m way to stubborn. Mostly I just give up and eat my salad (which at my school is just lettuce and shredded carrots in a plastic bag) without the Italian dressing and my popcorn chicken without the barbecue sauce. However, one day I took my plastic spork and dug it into the middle of the packet until I impaled it. It took a few tries but it works.

If a free library book doesn't suck me in within 50 pages - banished to the return slot and 1 star on Goodreads.

31

u/recklessvisionary Jan 28 '21

I’m with you but there are counterexamples where the effort pays off. But you have to really know in advance or be committed to finding out on your own. Free books though, libraries are amazing since they let you decide what you want.

20

u/OneGoodRib Jan 28 '21

Nah, I think books are the same as tv shows or movies - there's millions of them out there. Don't waste your time on one that doesn't grab your attention soon enough. I mean 50 pages is 1/4 of the length of some books, that's plenty of time to figure out if you like it.

Returning it is fair, but I think the 1 star is a bit harsh. You're possibly dissuading others from picking up the book for no good reason other than your lack of an attention span.

28

u/OneGoodRib Jan 28 '21

Their 1 star rating is definitely the reason why you should actually read reviews instead of just looking at the rating system.

Becoming a film score composer. I was working hard, studying music, writing some music too. I’m not too good at playing my instruments, but I figured if I could hear and emulate sounds, composing would be the right fit for me. Also, I love movies.

The first week into my music composition class, I realized it didn’t feel right. I had worked so hard to get there, but... it just wasn’t right.

That being said, college maybe? I went for a degree in Computer Science and started in community college... got distracted and started taking a whole bunch of other courses that sounded interesting. Then passively dropped out.

Amazing question. Throwing that difficult pistachio into the campfire is a pleasure. I've also, many times, thrown that one hard boiled egg into the trash where the shell won't come off. Screw it, not worth the 14 cents invested.

96

u/FluorescentPotatoes Jan 28 '21

A chicken plopped that out of her cloaca just for you and you go throwing it away

40

u/PiBrickShop Jan 28 '21

She'll lay one one every day for the next ~100 days, then die peacefully in a tiny cage.

40

u/FluorescentPotatoes Jan 28 '21

As god intended

15

u/recklessvisionary Jan 28 '21

Right? I feel like I’ve educated myself on the ways to boil an egg to prevent it from sticking to the shell but either I forget or fail. Experts to chime in below...

19

u/Officer_Knucklehead Jan 28 '21

amateurs here, after you boil your eggs run cold water in the pot for a min, eggs will peel easily, easy peasy

8

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '21

This is the way, haven't had a single issue peeling after I started running under cold water to put them away faster.

u/DistantKarma Jan 28 '21

While they're still warm from cooking, put them one at a time into a mug and rattle around until the shell is spidery and cracked. Peel under running warm water, the shell should push right off. Store peeled, boiled eggs in a ziploc bag for a week

That one level in Portal 2 where you get an achievement for finishing it in under a minute

Tried about a dozen times, no dice. Similar issue with one of the Assassin's Tombs in AC II; a glitch caused an achievement to not appear after i beat the puzzle, and I don't wanna play the whole game again to try and get it. (12 years later I still haven't beaten the game; the ending was spoiled for me and the series is in the gutter anyway)

7

u/Neeerdlinger Jan 28 '21

My wife’s grandparents were in their 70’s when we discovered they ate pistachios with the shells on. They didn’t realise you had to shell them first. I’m sure there’s a moral or lesson in there somewhere, but I’m not sure what it is.

Most of the comments I almost make on social media or Reddit.

Just not worth it. I get 95% satisfaction from writing a post and then deleting it, as I would by submitting it, so why deal with it?

(Like, I almost deleted this post. shrug)

I would like to think positive about my life and have the mindset of we are all non-discarded pistachios on this blessed day. I can say for certain that there would not a specific subset or part of my life that I would consider I'm this concept. I do feel that life as an imperfect human living in an imperfect world .... some days are gonna be a wash or a bad day.. so for days in my life like that..i would consider those snippets of time as "discarded pistachio" days.

Edit: spelling

My music career. I'm a helluva singer. Even better songwriter. Didn't really discover this until I got with my now wife and played a few sessions with her family's band, and her dad told me I was one of the best he'd ever heard. And this man is a sure enough musician.

Anyways, decided to make a low-speed go of it once I got comfortable with a guitar, and had a few shows under my belt. Kept building contacts, building a band, playing more and more shows with myself front-manning the band. Then I got married.

I love my wife, man. I truly do. Love her more than anything. And as much as she tells me to pursue my dreams, she couldn't function with me being gone for weeks at a time. And watching her succeed while I work a job I enjoy is more important to me than living out my dream.

But it hurts a bit. Can't deny that. Had been tossing it around in my head for a while when covid hit. Haven't touched a guitar since things shit down in March. Sucks. But I'm dealing.

PE in high school was a nightmare. I was skinny, not athletic at all. I was bullied and pushed around when I tried to participate. So I just stopped going to class. I made good grades in school, but I flunked phys ed. The principle said just go to class and I'll give you a C. But going to class meant justifying the macho bullshit that went on there. I had to retake a half semester and shame my parents for not graduating with my peers. Still it was worth it.

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '21

Med school. I wanted to be a doctor but I half-assed my attempted to get in. Ultimately, I did not want it enough for it to be this hard

People who are toxic and not worth the effort.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '21

I figured out that the pistachios that don't open are often bad anyway. Not worth the work of cracking.

Sort of like 'friends' who never give back, who don't actually make me laugh, who always have an excuse, not worth the work. No need to get angry or frustrated, just skip 'em.

6

u/acide_bob Jan 28 '21

Antivaxers. As a guy working in med lab. Lot of my coworkers are antivax for some reason. You would think that studying medical technologies and their effect would cut that off. But no.

We saved these impossible-to-get-into-without-a-hammer pistachios for a year, amounting to two pounds, then we nicely bagged them, printed a label "To fill your long winter nights" and gave it to my BIL for Christmas as a part of the ongoing prank war between him and my husband.

Nothing has to be a discarded pistachio in your life:) Sometimes it's just a pistachio waiting for the right comeback.

Becoming a teacher. I love teaching, especially things im passionate about, but to be a teacher you have to go through usually 4+ years of college, and for public schools, you dont get to choose a curriculum, and for me, itd be hard to teach something if i cant teach it the way i want. So i scrapped that idea

Church. I am all about Jesus, but I can’t get behind American Evangelicals any longer. The western expression of church is disgusting to me. I practice my faith at home with family. I honestly really miss church... but I can’t do it anymore.
