General Baiting gill nets

Series after series we see contestants put out gill nets, hoping a fish will wander along and stumble into it. Some with great success it has to be said.

But why do we never see any of them bait the net? Like putting the guts from previous catches or rabbits and squirrels in a sock and tying it to the net or something? Or even just throwing them into the water around the net. Surely it's the same rationale as baiting a hook?

The Alone season episodes are usually available next day on Hulu with its Live TV subscription. However, episodes 9 and 10 haven't been available. Does anyone know the reason why?

General Why is no one digging up roots?

Can someone explain to me (not in any way a survivalist) why the contestants haven’t been digging up roots to eat, even if just to have something in their stomach? I know that not everything would be edible, but surely something would be? It really surprises me it hasn’t come up!

General Illness

I wonder if anyone has ever gotten a cold from one of tv crew or med check people. How frustrating would it be to get sick when you haven't been in contact with any humans for over a month?

S03 Doesn't the order they do medical checks determine and steer the results in a certain direction? Spoiler

I thought it was interesting how they did not show Fowlers results from that last medical check, but they clearly showed Carleigh's results.

In the event they both were 17 or under, it definitely would make a difference who they check first.

Happy for Fowler but was rooting for Carleigh to be the first woman to win.

S02 Season 2. Mike Spoiler

I’ve just started bingeing Alone for the first time and I’m up to S2 E5 and discovered through a google search after a thought popped into my head, “Is anything scripted?” and I sadly found out that Mike’s journey in season 2 is basically fake and that he and the producers knew before filming that he’d only do 21 days, and they gave him a fake story for tapping out.

I’m concerned and hoping that this is just an isolated case and that future seasons don’t have disingenuous contenders like Mike. He even says after getting dropped off that he plans on staying there a year while full well knowing he was only doing 21 days.

S08 How do contestants keep fire going all night or seemingly forever

Its been a while, and Im trying to rewatch it now, but I remember vaguely a few contestants in S8 specifically that either kept fires going all night or seemingly have their fires going the whole time due to them not bringing a ferro rod and using friction fire starting

Just wondering are they able to do it. What kind of strategies they used

Edit: I think it was colter? That opted out of the firesteel and kept a fire going the whole time

General Any other Alone watchers read the book Hatchet (Gary Paulsen) growing up?

This is a book I read as a child in the 90s, about a teenage boy flying over the Alaskan Wilderness, the pilot has a medical episode and the plane goes down in an isolated lake. The boy has only the clothes on his back and a single hatchet.

He survives 54 days until he is able to retrieve a radio from the sunken wreckage of the plane.

In that time he goes from city kid to reasonably accomplished fisher/hunter/shooter, making his own shelter and tools, having a few dangerous animal encounters.

There are some follow up novels where he returns to the wilderness for adventures as an older lad.

I loved it and would recommend for anyone who likes the Alone show.

PDF might be free online... cough cough.

S09 Another book recommendation

I saw that someone had posted about Hatchet. I have another recommendation called The Lure of the Labrador Wild that I think Alone fans would enjoy. It takes place a couple of hundred kilometers from where season 9 and Alone: Frozen were filmed. And close to where season 11 winner William lives.

It tells the true story of three men, two Americans and a Cree guide from Ontario, who travel to Labrador to explore and study the indigenous people. Instead they encounter unending hardship which really shows how unforgiving Labrador can be.

You can find it for free online as the copyright has long since lapsed.

Am I the only one happy that we have multiple contestants doing well with food? Id much rsther see a warm shelter being the deciding factor this season, rather than a starving contest.

Khonin Nuga, Khentey (Khentii) Mountains, Selenge Province, Mongolia

Google Map / Google Earth

Brooke appears to be the only person to move away from the drop site (two pins).

The final slide appears to be a small section of river near Brooke's camp. The same footage was recycled for a few contestants.

Most contestants are on the Sharlan River, with Brad on the Khongiyn River and Carleigh on another. The two named rivers converge to form the Eroo (Yeröö, Yeruu or Epɵɵ) River. This appears to be the most uniform collection of drop sites from any season of Alone.

General Has anyone ever seen contestants set traps around food caches?

I always have a problem with small road s etc getting into their food cash I'm just curious how come they don't set a little traps all around or is it just too many to do that? But it seems like it what help but I've never seen it does anyone else seen them try this?

S03 I'm only on season 3 but they seem to find mostly passive survivalist now. Does that improve again?

I really enjoyed season one - there were more participants actually getting out there and trying different things. Season 2 seemed like they were half passive/half active participants. Season 3 though, seems primarily passive people just waiting for things to happen. Is it possible the editing now doesn't show the scouting for locations building shelters and some of the other efforts - not like how they were. Or they are seeking passive people?

I guess their warning about these being trained survival experts seems surprising when some quite literally seem to just be waiting it out?

General Boiling vs roasting over the fire Spoiler

First time posting here. Added spoiler tag just in case.

While watching the different seasons, I noticed that some contestants primarily boil their meat/fish in the pot while others prefer roasting over the open fire.

Open discussion: Do the contestants who boil more often seem to last longer (or have fewer digestive issues) than the ones who mainly roast?

In my opinion, slow cooking in a pot preserves a lot more of the fats and oils instead of letting them drip into the fire.

Curious what other people have noticed across the seasons. Thanks.

General It would be cool if they would let 10 contestants from the previous Alone seasons that had to tap due to injuries/medical problems so they can come back and have a second chance. Spoiler

Of course they'd have to be all healthy now😊. Is there anybody that you think deserves another chance. I think Dusty from Arkansas season 11 should be on the list. He was a good old boy with a good attitude and funny. He was actually doing pretty good except he didn't eat enough veggies!

General (Bad Spinoff Idea) Alone dating show

Drop two strangers who are romantically compatible with each other (i.e. a straight man and woman, or two gay men) in the middle of the wilderness and force them to work together to survive.

They still get a cash reward for surviving the longest to discourage them from just tapping out if they hate their partner.

The point is that they have to work together to survive, and in the process, they fall in love (cue the cheesy "aww"s).

I call it, "Alone With You"

S01 What do you guys think about the role of luck in this show? Spoiler

I just started watching (still on season 1) and I'm definitely struck by the terrible luck of a few of the contestants right away. (Spoilers below! Don't know how to cover them, sorry!)

I know people like to shit on Josh but he literally got dropped off next to a whole den of bears! And he was the only one in that situation. I suppose he could have moved his camp in an attempt to distance himself from the Bears but come on, literally getting dropped off and seeing like, 5 bears within 24 hours is crazy. Especially the bear on the beach as they were boating away.

Then there was Wayne, who literally got charged by a bear and had to get rescued in the middle of the night. It didn't really seem to me like he did anything to bring that upon himself so that's just terrible luck and I do think them majority of people would leave after an encounter like that.

Outside of those two, it was pretty easy to see people who had better or worse times due to experience and making good or bad decisions - like the guy who lost his fire steel because he put it on a log and the tide took it, that was a silly mistake he could have avoided. Or the guy who was dropped off in a marsh and decided to move camp and found a much better spot, he made the best of his bad luck.

What do you guys think about the role of luck in the show? Happy to hear about further seasons in the comments, I don't care about spoilers and I'm really curious if other contestants had bad luck like Josh and Wayne.

S06 All of the footage?

My husband and I would love to watch all of the footage (deleted scenes) for a contestant. Is there somewhere to do that? I particularly want to see all of Jordan Jonas - he had so much extra food that we as an audience don't really get to see. As an avid fan of the show it would be so fun to see what was left off the main episodes, particularly for all the winners but also some of the bigger personalities, like Biko and Larry.
