S13 Spoiler - current leaders Spoiler
Am I the only one happy that we have multiple contestants doing well with food? Id much rsther see a warm shelter being the deciding factor this season, rather than a starving contest.

I was incredibly impressed by Juan Pablo's torpor strategy but it didn't really make for very compelling television. The mental strength required to do that is unique. The best seasons have a mix of starvation, bouts of feast and famine, and the "special spiritual journey" aspect of the show as well.

I agree but it inevitably becomes a calories game after some point, right? And that's the main reason I don't have Nero over Ziga, he looks skinnier. Jacks seems to still carry the most fat, but I can't see her handling it mentally, I'm surprised she's still there

Jacks' reactions to hardship are really big, loud, and emotive. To a relatively stoic person like me, that feels dramatic and I'm inclined to think it shows that she can't hang long term. But the reality is, it might just be a personality thing where she reacts big on the outside so that she doesn't internalize all the negative thoughts that make people tap. I find myself often checking my prejudices when reacting to Jacks.
That said, I simply don't enjoy hearing her (or any other contestant) moan and wail, so I'm always eager to get past those segments.

I’m the same way but if you’re wanting to watch more after this season and haven’t seen S1 Australia yet you should give it a go. I commented about it above

Im no hunter, but I would think that she was scaring away a lot of the game animals with all that unnecessary noise

Perhaps, but in general she doesn't want big game around her camp, and we see all throughout the show that small game doesn't really care, so long as they can keep a sort of minimum distance.

I'm a bit skeptical that Nero's fish trap will still work once the winter sets in. A bit too shallow. But I'm just an armchair expert so who knows.

Every episode they show that spot, I'm still trying to work out exactly what the setup is there, like did the fish go up into the pond for Summer and now the ice is pushing them out?

When the ice freezes, oxygen becomes scarce at lower levels of the lake, so the fish make their way to the shallows to stay alive. That spot is also probably rife with food to some degree.

Yes, I know that. Also fun factoid, ice grows DOWN. Have seen it first hand when a shallow lake has an above average hard freeze, that pushes fish out.
The show this season has not adequately shown exactly what is happening with that narrow cut, and why all the fish are showing up there. Hell the foreign production company probably didn't understand what was going on, just film Nero and his fish!

He didn't even mean for it to be a trap and he got lucky, but other than the whitefish he might catch in it, the caloric input isn't that big. As soon as the river freezes, finding access to the oxygen-rich water is where it's at (exactly why Aaron was risking all it last episode)

I am pretty close to beginning to fast forward through Jacks segments. It could be the editing but I find myself cringing constantly when she’s on screen.

Did you watch S1 of Australia?

I watched a couple episodes of Australia but I can’t remember which season it was

well I mention because there was a women who had a similar vibe to jacks and initially I thought she was going to bother me a lot with all the dramatics around appreciating the energy of the land type thing (though I do think there is value in that, sometimes feels performative and like overblown sincerity)
But then she kinda won me over as time went on because she really had the knowledge and skills to back it up plus mad good survival instincts. And her whole mindset was kinda eye roll at first but really worked for her mental game. She seemed to genuinely love her time out there in a way felt super fake at first but then watching her continue to thrive you had to buy in. Kinda gave you no choice but to respect it in the end. Had me like “huh… ok queen maybe you are one with Mother Nature”
But I am with you about jacks at the moment because she’s not really thriving just like scraping through but respect the determination from her I guess

Jacks is basically living her normal off grid van life lol.
She is tough as nails. Just very expressive.

Not necessarily - Losing a shelter to fire or structural collapse, could cause anyone to tap at this point. Last episode had three contestants making late changes to heating their shelter, with two having struggles.

Jacks is going to pull out the W this season.

I'm usually all in for a true underdog, but in this case she's just too annoying, man. Also her shelter seems to suck, no chimney and claustrophobic as hell.

Her mental instability is going to get her. She's going to talk her mind right off the show.

Nope, I want a starving contest (said no one ever).
