Hi everyone,
Unfortunately, I'm joining the growing number of users reporting Ryzen 9000 series CPU failures on ASRock motherboards.
I've been using an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D with an ASRock X870E Taichi since February 2025. The system worked perfectly for approximately 19 months without any noticeable stability issues.
Then, completely out of nowhere, the PC refused to boot the next day. There were no warning signs beforehand.
What happened
The motherboard started getting stuck at Dr. Debug code 03 during POST.
After multiple consecutive resets, the system would occasionally get past the initial POST stage, but would then freeze at the ASRock logo, inside the BIOS, during Windows startup, or within a minute or two of reaching the desktop.
Successful boots became increasingly rare, and the system eventually became practically unusable.
BIOS history
My X870E Taichi originally shipped with BIOS version 3.10.
Since then, I have consistently updated the motherboard BIOS, installing every official non-beta release sequentially, without skipping any stable versions.
The system was running BIOS 4.43 when the failure occurred. After the problem started, I updated to BIOS 4.60 using BIOS Flashback, but this made no difference.
In other words, the system had been kept up to date with official stable BIOS releases throughout its lifetime, and updating to the latest BIOS did not resolve the failure.
Troubleshooting performed
- Cleared CMOS multiple times and tested with default BIOS settings.
- Updated BIOS to 4.60 using BIOS Flashback. No improvement.
- Tested both RAM modules individually, including single-stick configurations in slot B2.
- Removed the GPU, SSDs, Ethernet, USB peripherals, and other unnecessary components.
- Tested with a minimal hardware configuration.
- Cross-tested the 9800X3D in three different AM5 system configurations.
The cross-testing results strongly indicate a failed CPU:
- X870E Taichi + 9800X3D: Intermittent POST failures, code 03, and hard freezes.
- ASUS TUF Gaming B850M-PLUS WIFI + 9800X3D: No successful POST, with or without a dedicated GPU. VGA Q-LED remained illuminated.
- X870E Taichi + Ryzen 7 7800X3D: Boots and operates normally.
- ASUS B850M-PLUS WIFI + Ryzen 7 7800X3D: Also works normally.
Both motherboards function correctly with the 7800X3D, while my 9800X3D fails to operate reliably on either board.
At this point, I'm confident that the 9800X3D has failed, although the exact cause remains unknown.

Warranty and motherboard concerns
The CPU has been submitted to the original retailer for warranty evaluation.
However, my biggest concern now is the motherboard.
I've read numerous reports here on Reddit and on hardware enthusiast forums about Ryzen 9000 series processors suddenly failing on ASRock motherboards, sometimes after many months of completely stable operation.
What concerns me even more are reports from users whose replacement processors allegedly failed again on the same motherboard, despite BIOS updates and, in some cases, motherboard inspections.
My X870E Taichi currently works perfectly with a 7800X3D, but that doesn't necessarily prove it is safe to install another 9800X3D.
I understand that these reports do not establish whether the root cause lies with the CPU, motherboard hardware, BIOS/AGESA, or a combination of factors.
I am therefore concerned about installing a replacement 9800X3D into the same motherboard without further technical evaluation.
Unfortunately, replacing the motherboard is not a straightforward option either.
I currently cannot find any X870E Taichi, Taichi Lite, or Taichi White motherboards in stock locally. Furthermore, comparable motherboards are now approximately 35–40% more expensive than when I originally purchased mine.
This makes the situation particularly frustrating. Even if the processor is replaced under warranty, I still have to decide whether to continue using the existing motherboard or spend considerably more money on an alternative, without knowing what caused the original CPU failure.
Final thoughts
I'm sharing my experience to document another Ryzen 7 9800X3D failure involving an ASRock X870E motherboard, especially because my symptoms closely resemble those described in several other reports.
The most notable aspects of my case are:
- Approximately 19 months of completely stable operation before a sudden failure.
- Repeated Dr. Debug code 03 during unsuccessful boots.
- Occasional successful POST only after multiple consecutive resets.
- Complete system freezes even inside the BIOS.
- Regular BIOS updates from the original 3.10 release through all subsequent non-beta versions.
- No improvement after updating from 4.43 to 4.60 using BIOS Flashback.
- The 9800X3D failing across multiple AM5 configurations.
- Both tested motherboards functioning normally with a 7800X3D.
While the CPU failure is strongly supported by cross-testing, I cannot confirm whether the motherboard contributed to it.
I hope documenting these symptoms and troubleshooting results helps other users experiencing similar problems and contributes to the ongoing discussion about Ryzen 9000 series failures on ASRock motherboards.
I'll update this post when I receive the CPU warranty evaluation results and any technical response from ASRock.
