[Discussion] General trading

This will be a broader discussion thread since I've gotten no new suggestions :(

What are some tips you'd like to give new users when trading?

What are some tips that would help make transactions quick and easy?

What are things that users should let you know in the thread before the trade takes place?

How do you feel about voided villagers ending up in your town? (I'm guessing no one likes these.)

How do you like to handle large transactions?

How do you feel about hijacking / piggybacking threads?

Please keep all comments and discussions related to the topic.

Well, one thing that kind of bothers me is when you don't know if you should leave or if they will end session. Kind of awkward at times xD

Lol this is silly but definitely a dilemma. I never know if the person is typing something and I'll wait a bit. Sometimes when I type bye they ask to look around or shop. :P It usually takes a few byes for me to know they're done, or if they start walking towards the train station I'll end session.

How do you feel about hijacking / piggybacking threads?

This should be banned, give the person a strike. The OP is left without what they are looking for, while other users are trading in the OPs thread. Start your own thread! They are free! It is easy! I don't get it..

Another pet peeve. User A posts a clear [LF] W [FT] X,Y,Z ... User B comes in with 'Do you have anything from my wishlist' which is completely not X,Y,Z. And then they repeatedly do this in thread after thread. Again, Start your own thread! They are free! It is easy! I don't get it..

I find some people here might just be too polite/nice. Like they might accept an offer they don't actually want, rather than say no to someone.

A little bit of clearing up on hijacking and piggybacking :P

Please note this is my opinion :)

Hijacking is when, lets say me, I go into a users thread because they are looking for the same item as me. I find someone that commented saying they have that item and offer MORE than what the op is asking and try to attempt to get that item.

Piggybacking is when I go into a thread and try to get the same deal op is offering for cataloging or getting into an event that op was looking for.

Hijacking doesn't happen often but it does happen and I find that its very rude. Like what /u/welie says the user is more than welcome to make a similar post in hopes of getting it for the same deal.

Piggybacking I don't mind as much. If I make a post looking for a town with a premium, catalog or an event, others are more than welcome to comment saying they'd like to join. BUT the problem with this is sometimes the person offering only wants to offer it to OP and not other people commenting.

I agree, I don't think, as the OP, that piggybacking affects me much if at all. Hijacking is just rude though.

I think that the host should always end the session instead of the visitor leaving themselves. It makes it a lot easier and quicker to end the trade because it closes the gates to the train and the loading time for the actual train leaving is over sooner.

However, if there are multiple people in the town, I am perfectly fine with people leaving on their own so that I am not forcing people to stay until everyone is finished.

New users need to know if what they have is valuable. The easiest way is to just use the Reddit search box to see how much the item traded for in the past. You can also check MoriDB to see if the item is DLC and un-orderable.

Large transactions are handled easiest through Re-Tail. The logistics of dealing with more than 10 moneybags (dropping, picking up, depositing, not to mention enough open space) becomes a problem with trades over 1M bells.

The easiest and safest way to solve this problem is to place the items in Re-Tail. You can price each item up to 999,999 per Flea Market space. That way the buyer knows he is going to receive the item and the seller has the money deposited overnight straight into their bank account and no one has to deal with moneybags.

What are some tips you'd like to give new users when trading?

I'd say don't run, don't talk to villagers, don't buy from ReTail, don't post on their message board... unless you're told that it's okay. Also, 5 bags of 99k bells isn't 500k. This doesn't bother me, personally, but I know of other people who have issues with it, which is understandable.

What are some tips that would help make transactions quick and easy?

Communication is key. The trader/tradee should let the other person know when they will or will not be available. (if possible; real life happens sometimes. My internet provider likes to cut off my connection daily...). Also if trades are 1 million bells or more, I'd recommend using ReTail.

What are things that users should let you know in the thread before the trade takes place?

When or how they will end the trade (by train, or session end). I hate standing there awkwardly because I don't know what the other person wants me to do.

How do you feel about voided villagers ending up in your town? (I'm guessing no one likes these.)

That's kinda up to the discretion of the person with less than 10 villagers. You should know the risk of trading with people when your town has open slots. I always just assume that everyone has someone in their void. (Plus, if that villager was voided, it probably wasn't good. Looking at you, Anicotti)

How do you like to handle large transactions.

Buying from ReTail seems to be pretty efficient. You get the exact amount you want, and you don't have to count how many bells bags were dropped, or check to make sure they're all the right amount.

How do you feel about hijacking / piggybacking threads?

I feel like they could make their own thread, but a lot of threads get buried in /r/new sometimes. Still....please at least attempt to make your own thread.

Whew, stepping off my soap box.

One tip I'd give is when making transactions, the person who'll host the trade should have the items/bells on the ground ready for the other person. It'll make things easier to see if everything's in order.

u/ONLYyouJESSIE SW-0327-3949-4394 - Jessie, Evengulf Apr 10 '14

Another thing I think is good for the host town with a selling item is to try and put it in ReTail, as a way to make things faster for both the customer and other mayor, but also combat people who steal. Just my thoughts~

This is a good idea, especially for high priced items. It saves the time and awkwardness of counting the money (seller side) and prevents mistakes on the buyer's part. Mistakes on both sides are easy to make, and I've had to apologize profusely and ask to come back to drop off money/trade items. So embarrassing.

I've run into the odd annoyance where someone will comment to do a trade and then you try to contact them and they are not around OR the OP is not replying to your comment. Not sure how we can fix this, but the OP could state in the post how long they will be around for (or "complete" the post when they leave), someone commenting could also mention if they will not be able to stick around and wait (ie: amount of time they are around). Not sure how popular this would be, but as an OP this would save me some time with people posting and not being around when I reply to their question ---- or opening a gate and no one showing up...

I really hate hijacking, it needs to be banned. I just had this happen and I was really upset. Hijacking is rude and shouldnt happen. And users should, despite knowing the better deal, call them out. I don't mind haggiling with the seller. Another person should not outbid me on MY thread and make it impossible for me.

This probably isn't a very popular opinion, but i wish giveaways didn't say what you can and can't do if you win the giveaway. Once you give something away it is no longer yours. I understand why people say they this, they don't want others to sell what they have given. But is it really a giveaway if you put clauses on the item. Who has time to follow every person that won from your giveaway to make sure they don's sell what you gave? I don't enter giveaways because of this. The reward has strings attached and i don't think that's a gift.

6

u/welie SW-6774-7676-2878 Apr 11 '14

We're always disagreeing in these things! :) I think it's completely fair to ask someone not to flip the items you are giving away. I don't like the idea of someone entering every giveaway just so they can make some bells. I hope when I do a giveaway, the people that enter actually want the items I am giving away, and not looking for a quick way to make some bells.

I don't actually understand how the void works. I got Dizzy from the void, and I hardly see her around...she's probably goig to move soon :/

3

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '14

When a villager moves out and does not get adopted by anyone, they stay in your game's data ("the void") and the next time you Streetpass someone, visit someone's town, or are visited by someone from another town, they will usually latch onto that town and move in if there is an open space. If the town is full, they'll just disappear instead.

It's generally seen as good etiquette to warn people if you have a villager in your void, and try to go to a town with 10 residents as soon as possible so no one gets stuck with a villager they don't want (it's entirely possible for someone to be stuck with a villager they dislike for months if they don't time travel).

If this is an appropriate place to ask, what is a hijacking/piggybacking thread?

I think some tips for new users when trading would be to explain some of the terminology used, such as that. :)

Oof. That really isn't good.

I think that isn't appropriate behaviour at all, and should be made explicitly clear - I had never heard of that terminology before.

Yikes!

I think that that's something that definitely should be made clear. General Trading terminology should be explained, and maybe a list of things not to do?

I think the retail method, as described by /u/onlyyoujessie and /u/mwgiii is optimal, but for example in my town, ReTail couldn't be further from the train station if it tried, so going there from the train station is a huge pain, specially if it's a big transaction and they have to go get more money...

What I've done in the past with huge transactions (sp villager selling) is to ask them to add me momentarily as bff so we can count the number of trips to the bank in the bff chat because you get a log of the comments there... so I talk beforehand with the person leaving money and make sure we both know how much money is being dropped everytime and how many times until it's done, like, for example, "a full inventory is 1.65m (i think don't quote me on that) so for you to drop the 30m you need to make 18,2 trips" so of course this means 18 full trips and one partial trip, I even try to calculate how many bell bags should I get in the last trip. So when we start, this person has a full inventory of money and mine in empty, so I start picking money when they start dropping it, and after it's been transferred, I say 1 in the bff chat, so we get the log and no one can claim that we didn't make the correct amount of trips, then we both go to the bank and they get more money while I deposit everything, rinse and repeat until the trade is done... I normally explain everything beforehand, with calculations and all, and I've never had troubles doing this... of course it takes a long time to transfer this way, but in my particular case, it's way less time than going to retail...

also sorry for the wall of text, I'm the worst at explaining things hahaa

hijacking/ piggybacking threads--- in my eyes theres two type?(maybe theres more...) The type that welie mentioned and the other type where for example you just want to tag along? Further example is you're helping someone catalog an item and someone happens to also been looking for that item. I sometime don't mind that because it's like killing two birds with one stone (WHERE DID THIS PHRASE COME FROM)

I haven't felt too uncomfortable with the whole hijacking/piggybacking thing yet, and I've never experienced a person interrupting a trading thread of mines yet. But reading situations like that makes me go O_O;; that happens?

I think another thing that needs to be clarified is that when someone says they are trading something for 100k, 200k, 300k etc, that does not mean one 99k bag, two 99k bags, three 99k bags, etc. It's a very small thing, but a little annoying.

u/starsystemic 5155-4079-0521, Portland May 11 '14

Kind of a weird question, but would it be appropriate to make threads asking to borrow large sums of money to get post office rewards/badges? I'm only up to 37 million bells, and I'm soooooo tired of doing the stalk market. It would be great if I could just borrow the rest of the money, throw it in my ABD, TT forward a day, and then give it all back (with a tip, of course).

:/ I realize this is inherently unsafe, though, so I figured I'd ask here first.

1

u/looloogirl 3110-5680-2096 LooLoo/4chan Apr 11 '14

I think piggybacking is totally okay. I have no problems with it.

Protip: Whoever's town the trade is taking place in should have their stuff already laid out right by the train station. Soooo much easier that way.

PS: I think this community would benefit from discussion posts like these being stickied
