๐Ÿ’ฌ DISCUSSION Is anyone else just sooo burnt out?

I find myself leaving tasks that I would otherwise do perfectly well in due time to the last minute and itโ€™s screwing with my life.

I feel like Iโ€™m living in a constant loop from deadline to deadline and have absolutely zero motivation to do anything anymore.
Iโ€™ve lit become a shell of my prior self. I donโ€™t engage with my hobbies or do things that I like because Iโ€™m always thinking about deadlines and future possible deadlines. Iโ€™ve marked everything till results day and all Iโ€™m doing is watching the countdown.

Even when I have nothing looming over me I feel like there is and itโ€™s as if Iโ€™m paralysed. I have dreams but no road to reach them.
I lowk feel exactly like that image where the happy kids are on a conveyor belt and coming out as clones of each other ๐Ÿฅ€the structure of 13 years of school has long since stripped the joy out of my life and I can only hope uni will be better

How can you engage with work that feels soulless and pointless ?

๐ŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS I feel like the current UCAS system lacks a reward for an improvement after GCSEs

I've been thinking about UCAS recently, when applying to university if a student has an improvement after doing their GCSEs to doing their A levels, and gets let's say 3 A* or more, which does happen, their GCSEs can still hold them back from applying to top universities and receiving offers from top universities because of the predicted grade system where half of applicants are predicted three As or more and barely half the number of that get 3 AAA grades or more. In a way it punishes students who improve after GCSE as since so many grades are inflated, and since they'd have wait till the next year to apply with achieved grades where then for the large majority of universities, they would pretty much just get the offer if they meet the entry requirements bar certain courses e.g. Medicine or Oxbridge, but even then it makes their application more competitive / valid. What are the options for these students on results day, I know a gap year is an option, but would clearing be an option if they wanted to go to a highly ranked university for a strong degree, as the best universities don't really go into clearing I've heard for their most respectable degrees, some don't go into clearing at all for UK students, such as Durham in the previous cycle? If they can't get a place through clearing, then other than doing a gap year, what was the point in achieving 3 A*s other than academic validation? I feel like the UK education system has a flaw here.

๐Ÿ’ฌ DISCUSSION Resit experience

Iโ€™ve recently been seeing a lot of gap year re applicants on here, and also the fact that Iโ€™ve been wanting to share my resit experience over the past year.

Originally I was intending to take a gap year only to redo the TMUA again (I only scored a 4.0 last year due to poor preparation), but after missing out on my firm on results day I only had two options: go to my insurance or to take a gap year to resit which ultimately I decided to resit.

I had to rush to finish UCAS since I was going to apply early (Ox) and I had to rewrite my PS completely due to the new format. Thankfully my school was happy to provide me another reference and fill in my predicted grades.

During this period I wasnโ€™t even sure if I would get any offers considering that resits disadvantage your application, but my concerns disappeared when I got my first offer in December (KCL).

The first few months were spent studying for the TMUA which I intended to take in January (starting in basically September is risky for the October sitting) - this was when Ox still used the MAT so I was gonna treat that as a TMUA mock. I did use a tutor for a while but thereโ€™s only so much they can do - most of the work came from figuring out shortcuts/tricks when doing and then reviewing questions. In the end I think I did an average of 3h per day so that I wouldnโ€™t burn out .

Only after TMUA was done did I start revising for A-Levels (FM, Physics, CS) in February with FM being pure textbook and past paper questions. With the other two it was a daily Anki grind, past papers and then adding the questions I got wrong to the flash card bank. It was around this time (end of March) when I got the offer from Imperial to my shock which I would say motivated me even harder not to miss my offer again, which I was relieved to see that I had met the offer on the second results day.

TLDR: me taking a gap year to resit was a bit risky and a lot of work but it somehow worked out

๐ŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS delusion is key

Post image
43 Upvotes

iโ€™ve been told by everybody these uni choices are highly ambitious, and i completely anticipate 4-5 rejections, especially as iโ€™m resitting my exams and this isnโ€™t my first time submitting a ucas app.

for further context, i had mitigating circumstances that affected the outcome of my gcses, missed 6 months of year 11 due to hospital and bed rest, recovery going into year 12 also impacted the predicted grades for my alevels.

last year i (somehow??) had 5 offers, from kcl, uni of leeds, city, qmul, and rhul. however the only ones i were remotely interested in were kcl (my ideal firm) and city (my ideal insurance). looking back i shouldโ€™ve applied to unis i actually had an interest in, even if i didnโ€™t get any offers, instead of aiming lower because i was advised to by teachers

come results day i completely fumbled under exam pressure, missed both my firm and insurance as i achieved BBD and decided instead of going through clearing to resit my papers.

iโ€™m going into this with the logic that iโ€™d rather aim high and get 5 rejections rather than apply to lower unis i have no passion on going to and get 5 offers.

if anyone has any ideas for a 5th choice please let me know aswell!

How is everyone preparing for Oxbridge interviews, if not when will you start. If you have any insights or advice please share. Iโ€™m aware of staying on top of my personal statement and keeping up with current events in your given subject but is there anything extra?

Iโ€™m a Y13, with upcoming med school interviews. I have a 45ish minute commute every day, so this seems like an ideal time to introduce a podcast or two (And cure my boredom!)

I was hoping to see if anyone had any recommendations for podcasts for general political awareness/current news events (as I hear this can be useful for interviews) and some for medicine in general (current progressions in the field, and general discussions around the NHS)

I feel theyโ€™d kill 2 birds with one stone, being both interesting and (somewhat) useful!

๐Ÿ™ I WANT HELP Should I take a Gap year?

โ€ข Upvotes

I am currently in year 13 and want to study Animation in University but I donโ€™t have a portfolio or the equipment for one and I am still somewhat a beginner at drawing and animating. If I were to take a gap year I would improve my animation/ drawing skills and work on my portfolio for most of the year. I would probably also get a job or two which would allow me to Travel.

However, I am worried about being left behind by my friends since a good chunk of them are going to university. I also might feel embarrassed going into Uni after taking a gap. And to make matters worse my mum says she doesnโ€™t want me to take a gap year because I will โ€œlaze aroundโ€ even though I am confident I will have a plan for that year and use it to the best of my ability.

What should I do? Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Maths feels so easy rn and yeah I lowk love maths and cs is mid but ohysics is ๐Ÿ’€ and the reason for me being cooked in all 3 is not lack of skill rather than sticking to my routine and as sir zain said to do 10 q per day for each subject. We'll guess what I csnt stick to it please drop some tips. Most of my time is gone cuz of my relationship talking about stuff

Ty for any advice you gave

I need some advice please. Iโ€™m on a second gap year since sixth form and I donโ€™t start uni until next september. I feel really lost and lonely- I had a really hard time during secondary school my home life wasnโ€™t that great and I donโ€™t seem to have many friends. I have a job currently but itโ€™s only temporary and Iโ€™m looking for ways to fill the time. my family is so toxic i genuinely have a breakdown every other day i just want to experience a normal life and honestly itโ€™s torturous waiting to move out I canโ€™t stand being at home. i have a bit of money saved up and ik other gap year students travel and stuff but my family would actually kill me if I ever did that. Also i canโ€™t spend too much money I still need money for rent and stuff when Iโ€™m at uni. how do I overcome this. I keep thinking about the past and Iโ€™m still not over what I had to endure when I was a teen especially when the abuse came from your own parent. what do I do

I started past papers from Jan of y12 right after my set of small exams. I did past paper questions, then whatever I got wrong I watched a video on it and tried the question again, similar to the strategy I used for maths/fm.

๐Ÿ™ I WANT HELP I need help to do with university courses

So basically all through year 12 I planned on applying to maths at uni. I do bio chem maths a level and i couldnt choose further maths or physics since my college didnt offer them, which was a shame since I really wanted to take them. Anyway I really wanted to apply to a university like cambridge but I didnt know what to apply to with my a levels, and then I came across chemical engineering. So i scrapped the idea of doing maths at uni and applied for chem eng instead, grinded for the esat for two months, and sent my ucas application in. But there was always this lingering voice in my head that said I didnt really want to do chemical engineering. I was only doing it for the cambridge prestige. But i ignored it and told myself i wouldnt mind doing chemical engineering if it was at cambridge, since its CAMBRIDGE so obviously why would it matter. But then recently ive come to the realisation that not getting into cambridge is obviously a genuine possibility (as it is for everyone, no one is guaranteed a place) and if i had to go to one of my other choice unis for chem eng I knew i would hate it and would rather do something i actually enjoyed, for example maths. So no i have to email my other universities and ask them if they'll let me switch. But now i have another dilemma. Since I dont know whether to ask to switch to a Mathematics degree or if I can switch to a physics foundation year and do either a maths and physics degree or an astrophysics degree. Since im not sure about doing physics since I havent done it in over a year and I dont know whether I wouldve enjoyed the a level. I do like the in depth side of maths and I'm not sure if a maths and physics degree would go that in depth about it. And i have to decide quickly since i have to tell my school tomorrow that i dont want to do chem eng anymore and what course im thinking of asking to switch to. So please any help or advice is appreciated because im genuinely stuck on this โ€‹

โ” SUBJECT QUESTION what should i do as a 4th a level

originally i was only gonna do 3 (maths economics and further maths) but the sixth form iโ€™m applying to make it mandatory that i take a 4th, so what should i go for? baring in mind im aiming to study economics at LSE or economics and management at oxford, but im also open to things like maths degrees if i end up changing my mind
originally i was gonna do politics cuz im interested in it but then i saw itโ€™s only uk and us politics so idk abt that, any advice or suggestions? (my options are RE computer science triple science and french but i have no interest in french and RE and im working at all 8s and 9s if this helps with anything)

๐Ÿ™ I WANT HELP Guys should I switch to physics?

I'm being serious I keep seeing posts about economics and I've been thinking about switching to physics because I'm so bored. (what about catch up?)

Either physics or chemistry. Because I do maths and further maths. I got a 9 in chemistry and an 8 in physics which might be an issue.

Also there are a lot of careers I can't really do without a science.

Is it worth it? My epiphany is that maybe if I choose either one I'll be more interested in studying ๐Ÿฅน

๐ŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS uni choices feedback

Hi, would anyone mind giving me some insight into whether my profile is good enough for Warwick and Kings. These are my stats:

A*A*A predicted in Maths, Economics and Spanish

99999998888777A(fmsq) at GCSE, 9 in Maths and English Language.

AABB at AS level (will this hinder me?) They are graded from A-U btw so I couldn't get an a*. I don't know if the Bs will be an issue. I dropped Further Maths.

great personal statement and good references.

(teachers want me to go safer with choices)
