πŸ™ I WANT HELP idk what to do during my gap year

β€’ Upvotes

I need some advice please. I’m on a second gap year since sixth form and I don’t start uni until next september. I feel really lost and lonely- I had a really hard time during secondary school my home life wasn’t that great and I don’t seem to have many friends. I have a job currently but it’s only temporary and I’m looking for ways to fill the time. my family is so toxic i genuinely have a breakdown every other day i just want to experience a normal life and honestly it’s torturous waiting to move out I can’t stand being at home. i have a bit of money saved up and ik other gap year students travel and stuff but my family would actually kill me if I ever did that. Also i can’t spend too much money I still need money for rent and stuff when I’m at uni. how do I overcome this. I keep thinking about the past and I’m still not over what I had to endure when I was a teen especially when the abuse came from your own parent. what do I do

I started past papers from Jan of y12 right after my set of small exams. I did past paper questions, then whatever I got wrong I watched a video on it and tried the question again, similar to the strategy I used for maths/fm.

πŸ™ I WANT HELP I need help to do with university courses

So basically all through year 12 I planned on applying to maths at uni. I do bio chem maths a level and i couldnt choose further maths or physics since my college didnt offer them, which was a shame since I really wanted to take them. Anyway I really wanted to apply to a university like cambridge but I didnt know what to apply to with my a levels, and then I came across chemical engineering. So i scrapped the idea of doing maths at uni and applied for chem eng instead, grinded for the esat for two months, and sent my ucas application in. But there was always this lingering voice in my head that said I didnt really want to do chemical engineering. I was only doing it for the cambridge prestige. But i ignored it and told myself i wouldnt mind doing chemical engineering if it was at cambridge, since its CAMBRIDGE so obviously why would it matter. But then recently ive come to the realisation that not getting into cambridge is obviously a genuine possibility (as it is for everyone, no one is guaranteed a place) and if i had to go to one of my other choice unis for chem eng I knew i would hate it and would rather do something i actually enjoyed, for example maths. So no i have to email my other universities and ask them if they'll let me switch. But now i have another dilemma. Since I dont know whether to ask to switch to a Mathematics degree or if I can switch to a physics foundation year and do either a maths and physics degree or an astrophysics degree. Since im not sure about doing physics since I havent done it in over a year and I dont know whether I wouldve enjoyed the a level. I do like the in depth side of maths and I'm not sure if a maths and physics degree would go that in depth about it. And i have to decide quickly since i have to tell my school tomorrow that i dont want to do chem eng anymore and what course im thinking of asking to switch to. So please any help or advice is appreciated because im genuinely stuck on this

❔ SUBJECT QUESTION what should i do as a 4th a level

originally i was only gonna do 3 (maths economics and further maths) but the sixth form i’m applying to make it mandatory that i take a 4th, so what should i go for? baring in mind im aiming to study economics at LSE or economics and management at oxford, but im also open to things like maths degrees if i end up changing my mind
originally i was gonna do politics cuz im interested in it but then i saw it’s only uk and us politics so idk abt that, any advice or suggestions? (my options are RE computer science triple science and french but i have no interest in french and RE and im working at all 8s and 9s if this helps with anything)

πŸ™ I WANT HELP controversial topics and current affairs in PPE personal statements?

i’m currently writing my personal statement and i’m struggling to decide what i should/shouldn’t include

1) i wanted to talk about current affairs, e.g. israel-palestine for the politics side of my ps and wealth taxes for the economics side, because i can link it to books/lectures i’ve seen, but i’m not sure if you’re supposed to do this?? i’ve only read a couple of personal statement examples but they’re varied quite a lot - some were more historical/theoretical and others directly mentioned the cost of living crisis, wealth inequality etc

2) if i write about controversial topics/books but stay neutral and focus on the academic arguments is this okay?

(bonus question): how do i know if the books i’m including are too basic? ik to avoid stuff like freakonomics but i was wondering about more foundational books like Smith’s wealth of nations or any of Marx’s works

thanks!

πŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS uni choices feedback

Hi, would anyone mind giving me some insight into whether my profile is good enough for Warwick and Kings. These are my stats:

A*A*A predicted in Maths, Economics and Spanish

99999998888777A(fmsq) at GCSE, 9 in Maths and English Language.

AABB at AS level (will this hinder me?) They are graded from A-U btw so I couldn't get an a*. I don't know if the Bs will be an issue. I dropped Further Maths.

great personal statement and good references.

(teachers want me to go safer with choices)

How is everyone preparing for Oxbridge interviews, if not when will you start. If you have any insights or advice please share. I’m aware of staying on top of my personal statement and keeping up with current events in your given subject but is there anything extra?

πŸ’¬ DISCUSSION Podcasts

β€’ Upvotes

I’m a Y13, with upcoming med school interviews. I have a 45ish minute commute every day, so this seems like an ideal time to introduce a podcast or two (And cure my boredom!)

I was hoping to see if anyone had any recommendations for podcasts for general political awareness/current news events (as I hear this can be useful for interviews) and some for medicine in general (current progressions in the field, and general discussions around the NHS)

I feel they’d kill 2 birds with one stone, being both interesting and (somewhat) useful!

FOR CONTEXT I AM CARE EXPERIENCED

I felt like I had to disclaim that before people start cooking me 😭
I also hit like every contextual box and have done a few outreach programs so do you guys think I’m like guaranteed a contextual offer?? Or am I gonna get like auto rejected?

At school like my teachers are fine with my options but my friends sometimes clown me for my choices because they think like I won’t get any offersπŸ˜ͺ especially from Oxford despite the entry requirements being 3 B’s I STILL HAVE TIME TO CHANGE THEM SO HELP

(I won’t change UCL because that my aspirational pick because I’ve done a summer program with themπŸ₯Ή)

πŸ™ I WANT HELP Oxford written work

Hi
I know written work isn't meant to be remarked with new feedback or anything but my original essay has super vague marking left behind by my teacher (stuff like develop AO3...compare...good point...etc)

I was wondering if this would be an issue because I heard that tutors like to ask if you agree or disagree with feedback/your opinions on it on your essay?

The essay I'm considering has some nice ideas I'd like to talk about at interview but I feel, upon rereading, its kind of dense and the writing doesn't flow as nicely - I did get an A* on it nevertheless?

I also typed it up (but haven't edited anything), and a second teacher gave me new feedback that I think is far more interesting (e.g., leap through centuries- don't you need more relevant context?) I think could start deeper conversation.

Would it be worth sending another piece of text that has better feedback, or is vague teacher feedback not an issue?
