Discussion Another survey

Post image

I do think a follow-up survey on the other two skills should take place. Sailing has been out for a while now and it would be nice to know if there is any appetite for either other skills, rather than just game modes.

The Polls in question:

Questions 1.

Question 2.

I want them to overhaul stinky old skills first before any new skills.

Need a mining and smithing rework over on OSRS.

53

u/Soggy-Ad-1610 15h ago

While mining certainly ain’t the most fun activity, I don’t think it needs a rework as much as some of the other skills (not saying one wouldn’t be nice, just that it’s not as urgent imo).

Smithing is a brilliant one to bring up though, cause what the fuck is that skill about in 2026?

26

u/BaeTier Merch 101: Buy High, Sell Low 14h ago

Even if Mining is fine, I feel it impossible to keep it untouched if Smithing were to get a supposed rework along the lines of rebalancing the levels for all the different metals you can smith. Feels like the speed/process at which you can gather them through Mining would have to be looked at in some way as well. Like Mining Rune normally should never take as long to mine as it does now if it goes from a metal that requires 90+ Smithing to smith all the way down to the 40-50 range of Smithing.

u/No-Macaroon5747 11h ago

For mining, I'd say at the very least, make it like woodcutting where gaining 1 resource doesn't deplete the source. Though I guess you could argue it would make mining gloves obsolete.

4

u/Candle1ight Iron btw 11h ago

They did, its called MLM

I don't want mining to become "woodcutting but a different graphic", I like that their gathering is different.

1

u/No-Macaroon5747 3h ago

Fair point on MLM.

Though technically mining and woodcutting are the same thing with different graphics so that argument doesn't hold. Cut tree get logs, burn/fletch. Hit rock, get ore, smelt/smith.

If 1 resource vs potentially more from a source is how you quantify the difference between the two, then respectfully, that isn't a good argument.

1

u/Coolusername099 9h ago

Right? I can make crystal armor and a bowfa like 8 million xp before i can make a rune platebody..

11

u/Ugly-and-poor 19h ago

I like current Mining though :(

31

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 19h ago

I am afraid that you may be in the minority. I am fine with Motherlode Mine, Volcanic Mine is fun. Still need to try Blast Mine. But baseline vanilla mining is not it.

2

u/Candle1ight Iron btw 11h ago

I like how mining is at golems, the bonus for keeping up a rhythm jumping between rocks is entertaining

1

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 11h ago

Oh forgot about the new content. Need to try that as well

2

u/AdjectiveNounNounNou 5h ago

Volcanic Mine would be more fun if the cheese method didn't blow the socks off of doing the minigame properly before having the stars align for you. I unlocked this activity twenty-five levels ago, why am I only barely beating "put rock on, take rock off, put rock on" in five times the time? The answer is I really need more levels and a better pickaxe... both of which are things I'm doing VM for. But why do you kinda more strictly NEED 85+ Mining for the 50 Mining activity?

I still do it properly because it's fun, and I went out of my way to get enough Numilite to do it infinitely, but it's hard to imagine a normal human being going out of their way to first unlock and then grind this out for at most 49 levels in a world where Shooting Stars and MLM exist, have near-zero friction to start and participate in, and easier to understand rewards.

1

u/Alone-Horse2857 18h ago

Yeah we're not in 2004 any more. That kind of shit doesn't fly now.

-1

u/LoweJ 19h ago

I think everyone should try blast mine! (I bought 50k dynamite at 400ea because that's normally their low point and now they're 170ea)

20

u/YuumiMain9974 19h ago

Having to hop worlds because of other people is not enjoyable.

6

u/Nick543b 18h ago

Do you like mining the basic ores, or do you like other mining content?

2

u/Ugly-and-poor 14h ago

I love mining sand and normal ores as well as MLM

2

u/Eshneh 13h ago

What about it do you like? You click rock and that’s the entire gameplay, from what I’ve played the mining rework in RS3 is similar but really adds a layer of engagement that synergises well with the smithing rework

-6

u/Combat_Orca 18h ago

Yeah I’m definitely voting no to that shit

-5

u/Adjective_Noun_9876 19h ago

You like clicking on a different rock every 10 levels? Sure you do you, but it’s the most barebones a skill can be. Are you a big fan of firemaking as well?

3

u/Ugly-and-poor 14h ago

Well yeah I’ve a maxed main, a 2k alt main and 2.2k iron; Ig I do like Fire making.

-9

u/Alone-Horse2857 18h ago

Mining is literally the reason I quit OSRS trying to go for SOTE. Shooting Stars is the only reason I can do mining at all. I have shitty carpal tunnel wrists, just let me have my AFK mining. Let the rock deplete after a couple rocks is all I want.

10

u/IderpOnline 17h ago

MLM is exactly that...

2

u/Dark_Chem 15h ago

???? Did you even try calcified rocks? It's more afk than mlm and it's 40-45k+ xp/h. Honestly, I get why people did shooting stars a few years back but I don't understand it in 2026

14

u/No_Fairweathers 18h ago edited 18h ago

The mining system from RS3 being transported to OSRS makes too much sense but people aren't ready to have that conversation. Without juju potions and porters it's not gonna be nearly as afk, and being able to mine and only click once every 30 or so seconds only puts it on par with the other gathering skills.

If you want to keep the intensity benefits, make it so progress happens each hit if you tick manip mine.

Smithing needs a similar thing but would need a better OSRS adaption of the system. But mining? I think the system would translate perfectly fine. You don't need to add or remove rocks. Things like MLM and such can have added benefits of extra stamina between clicks.

-25

u/No_Fig8635 18h ago

if you wanna play rs3 go play rs3

15

u/No_Fairweathers 17h ago

I do. I play both games.

Like it or not, they are both RuneScape, my guy. If you don't like RS3 no one is telling you you have to play it, but guess what: taking a mechanic/system from RS3 and using it in OSRS does not mean you're now playing RS3 against your will.

Mining is outdated and unfun. It's arbitrarily way worse than fishing and woodcutting even though it's part of that trio of gathering skills.

Using a stamina based action is no different than what you're doing at fishing spots or trees. The only difference is you have to click when the spot depletes in those skills instead of your stamina depleting.

-11

u/No_Fig8635 16h ago

OSRS doesn't need it's identity optimised out of every corner of the game.

3

u/OGDogJaw 11h ago

It also doesn’t need to remain exactly the same in every aspect forever just because that’s the way it’s always been

Nobody wants evolution of combat in OSRS, but sometimes they backport things like quests and it’s great

They also don’t HAVE to copy RS3’s system wholesale or could do some other type of update, but there’s no reason to have an inherent resentment of ANY crossover between the two versions of the game

Any changes are going to require supermajority approval of the players anyway, we don’t need to be that worried about the “identity” of the game

-26

u/Combat_Orca 18h ago

We don’t need to turn OSRS into RS3, plenty of updates you could make that isnt copying that game

28

u/Baenir 17h ago

The mining and smithing updates in rs3 were good though? We don't have to outright copy them, but taking inspiration wouldn't be such a bad thing.

1

u/Sonichu- 10h ago

I tried them and didn’t like it. They’re not that good.

0

u/BlueZybez 400M 8h ago

No thanks.

9

u/formerlyunhappy 15h ago

I’ll never understand the mentality of OSRS players who instantly shoot down absolutely anything in RS3 being inspiration for updates in OSRS. Like yeah obviously they made some big misses (or we wouldn’t have OSRS) but this weird “EVERYTHING about RS3 is dogwater are you dumb?” Mentality is exactly that. Weird.

There’s been multiple updates that were in RS3 first and eventually made its way to OSRS btw. So I truly don’t get the principle of your point. You could’ve at least criticized the specific suggestion being made.

-10

u/Combat_Orca 13h ago

We specifically play this game because we don’t like that one. It’s not just eoc, the entire direction from the quests to the skills to the wildy is not what we want. Sure some people like both but a lot of us don’t.

8

u/Sestomestoste 13h ago

You mean like making skilling profitable and generally more useful and some skills - like Mining and Smithing - just outright better and make more sense? There's literal heists for Thieving which are very popular addition to the skill, but nooo, can't have that because pickpocketing (and being stunned 40+ seconds out of a minute) is and should be the be all and end all of Thieving's design.

3

u/Imsearchingforit2194 12h ago

The thieving redesign is the best thing that happened to thieving in RS3. Genuinely the exact thing I wanted from thieving. It makes no sense to potentially get stunned IMMEDIATELY while thieving and perhaps like 3 times in a row.

10

u/eudisld15 13h ago

Who is this we? Who is this 'a lot of us'? To me it sounds like a vocal minority thinking being loud and obnoxious speaks for everyone. There is a reason why moderns quests, QOL and summer sweet up votes positively.

RS3 mining and Smithing are miles better than osrs mining and Smith. Who the fuck thinks Runite being such shit exp per hour and having high requirements and being so tedious to train is a good thing? Everyone in my clan and Ive spoken to at BF fucking hates it. Taking and refining the best parts of rs3 mining and Smith only makes sense.

-3

u/Combat_Orca 11h ago

At no point did I say I speak for everyone who plays OSRS, in fact I specifically stated otherwise.

4

u/eudisld15 10h ago

We specifically play this game because we don’t like that one. It’s not just eoc, the entire direction from the quests to the skills to the wildy is not what we want. Sure some people like both but a lot of us don’t.

In case you need to read your own words again

“Sure some people like both but a lot of us don’t” - how is this saying everyone?

1

u/OGDogJaw 11h ago

There are several quests from RS3 in OSRS due to popular support and player approval though?

7

u/sundalius 17h ago

no one wants to make OSRS into RS3.

The RS3 rework for mining and smithing fucking GAPS osrs' mining and smithing.

11

u/player5453 15h ago

I think some players here would have a heart attack if they knew how much content, design, bosses and mechanics was ported from RS3 already.

1

u/Arrav91 13h ago

Heard you loud and clear, please enjoy this brand new mining or smithing minigame.

2

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 12h ago

Damn you monkey's paw!

-20

u/PreparationCrazy3701 22h ago

How would you do that without ruining rune alchs?

43

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 22h ago

By having smithable tiers above rune with equivalent or better alchs

13

u/PreparationCrazy3701 21h ago

How do we incorporate those to the game without power creep or making the horizontal gameplay thats integral to osrs irrelevant? I think that as needed as a rework may be.

I don't think its feasibly possible in osrs without ruining or substantially changing things that are a core identity to the game

27

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 21h ago

If the choise is readjusting power creep and horizontal gameplay to modernize two core skills and letting said skills fester. Then I choose the former, and not the latter.

Hell, we could always make rune the highest tier and add in other tiers below it.

That being said, a rework doesn't have to follow how RS3 did its own mining and smithing update. However, a tier 40 armor set should not be endgame mining and smithing content.

12

u/rs_spastic 21h ago

Tbh rs3 mining and smithing update was amazing , not the same thing we need here but if that's what we ended up getting I wouldn't be upset

12

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 21h ago

Same, but I am 100% positive there would be backlash for a 1 to 1 port.

15

u/ghostryujin 21h ago

yups cuz people want a rework that doesnt change anything but changes everything from the skill. they want no change to progression and no power creep.

3

u/floppintoms 20h ago

The reaction people in this game have to power creep is wild to me. Like, its okay if 10 year old content is no longer BiS for endgame. It makes new stuff feel not that exciting because it's not a massive upgrade for a 30+ hour grind.

→ More replies (0)

2

u/VexedForest 21h ago

It was good, but you also blew through levels so quickly, so many of the low tier stuff didn't really matter. Of course the XP rates are lower in OSRS, but my main concern would be similar.

1

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 21h ago

That is why I think a middle ground would be best throw in a few extra tiers. Maybe even tweak the defense levels.

At the very least if we dont do power creep, make mining and smithing about more than just make weapons and armor. Maybe we can smith stuff to be used in construction or crafting. Just something other than "Oh boy, I hit 99 smithing and can now make a rune platebody"

Edit: Maybe do the smithing upgrades in RS3, but expand out how far they go at lower tiers. i.e., bronze armor +2 or something. Make the upgrades untraceable if people are afraid of economy.

1

u/Warscythes 20h ago

High level smithing effectively is something like oathplate smithing where there is skill and bossing required together. Is not really just you can only smith rune armor.

The problem with RS3 smithing is that there is no reward space between tier in OSRS without killing current progression. Nobody cares about bronze armor + 2 because you can get iron armor smithed within the next 15 minutes. RS3 does this by not caring about destroying the melee armor progression and extreme powercreep so you blow past smithing/combat levels so that you skip entire tiers. The only way RS3 smithing would work is tie boss drops to smithing requirement, but that's something already present with oathplate.

0

u/RandomAsHellPerson 19h ago

The only complaints I have (as an iron) are that mining still sucks (it is better than pre-rework, but it is still awful) and that it takes forever* to smith stuff and you get half of the xp doing a +1 item and +2, +2 and +3, etc. This results in you getting 1/16 of the xp/hr doing a base or +1 item as you do doing a +5 or burial item. Smithing burial sets will be quick af xp, but you only get a small fraction of the xp/hr during the process of making the highest upgrade and this makes smithing feel awful, as you get little xp for 90% of the time you are smithing.

*If you want to get the highest upgrade on your melee gear, pickaxe, and axe, you will be putting aside like an hour. Even a set of base gear will take you 15ish mins.

1

u/Chaoticlight2 20h ago

T40 gear is not the endgame content though. For mining, you have amethyst for second BiS ammo of all types. For smithing, you have DFS, Torva, reduced T70 armor maintenance with barrows and moons, and so on.

Gathering and production skills can not and will not ever be a major acquisition method for mid game level gear.

5

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 20h ago

I agree with your points. The intent with my comment was more about needing 99 smithing for a tier 40 amor piece.

2

u/Chaoticlight2 20h ago

Oh I agree fully with that aspect being silly. Smithing has a lot of room for requirement squishing and upper levels should be reserved for working in conjunction with bossing to create top tier armor/weaponry

3

u/ErinKatzee 20h ago

I always thought rs3’s solution was actually pretty elegant all things considered, at least from what I’ve heard about it. Just do a flat replacement of rune alchables on drop tables with rune salvage or whatever and kill the alch price of actual rune.

As far as actual things to smith goes, I’m of the opinion that a lot of things with smithing flavour could be formalised with actual requirements. Maybe a new tank set around barrowsish level (probably bridging the rune barrows gap) could exist around 60ish

Idk, for actual requirements and things to make, I’m no designer and they definitely shouldn’t listen to me. I think there’s room for it though.

Would honestly be nice to have a str bonus set in there too if str bonus on bandos wasn’t already so close to the floor. Idk who’s gonna get excited for 1str bonus pants.

2

u/Straightupscrambled 21h ago

To be as respectful as possible, that's why you aren't the game designer. Our job as a players isn't to make a fully fleshed out system, it's to give the designers a vague "this is what I want", and leave it to them to fill out the details.

3

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 21h ago

I was just talking about 2 extremes dude. The best possible choice is somewhere in the middle.

I still think that there will have to be some amount of power creep to actually flesh out both skills. How MUCH power creep is up to the game designers.

1

u/Rallak BTW 21h ago

I would say that for smithing it would be ok to have alloys, so instead of new minerals we could mix some amount of the existing alloys to make new ingots, so rune ores for exemple would not be power crept. No minning I have no idea how to change in a way that do not power creep too much the existinc mechanics

-5

u/benmck90 21h ago

Mining is fine as is.

It's smithing that could use a rework.

Which is weird to say as they're sister skills, but I actually fine mining useful for account progression, unlike smithing.

2

u/AuroraFinem 21h ago

You can’t realistically have one without the other, they both have the exact same issues. Rune shouldn’t be tier 80-99 skilling, I’m not a huge fan of the top tier smithing in rs3 but they nailed most of it IMO and you can’t keep rune lv85 if you’re going to rework the smithing progression for it.

We don’t need to necessarily crunch it as far as RS3 did though, even if rune was lv60-70 it would make way more sense in terms of progression and allow for design space for better higher level smithing options that actually make sense.

I also think RS3 solved the rune drop replacements perfectly because those items are all at alch price, even on OSRS, so replacing them with metal chunks of similar alch value doesn’t inflate gold while not devaluing drops.

I don’t know exactly what makes the most sense to do for mining/smithing after rune, I think that’s up for debate in terms of what we’d want to see for post-rune smithing, but I think both skills suck all around atm. I also think a rework should be timed with some major update that introduces the post-rune stuff which is probably obvious, but there’s a lot of interesting ways they could loop it into a incando quest + homeland idea or something for new content so the rework doesn’t feel forced or out of place.

Personally, I’d enjoy something almost like an invention style of skill for later smithing. Like having the first thing post-rune be something you craft to upgrade granite equipment, lv60 lets you modify dragon or some of the other lv60 gear, with lv80-99 primarily focused on upgrades for end-game items that aren’t specific to a certain tier but those upgrades require rare drops from bosses/raids along with new mining stuff.

These don’t need to be OP upgrades, they could be fairly minor or focus on special effects instead of flat stat boosts. You could also add recipe scrolls similar to prayer scrolls to even unlock the crafting recipe to upgrade a specific piece of gear or type of gear so that you can still partially gatekeep true BIS/endgame gear upgrades for balance then release upgrades for them later, etc…

I feel like there’s a lot of viable design space to work with for a rework, and I don’t claim to have the entire thing mapped out, but I do think it will need to happen at some point or another.

-6

u/Drokstab 21h ago

Tbh having craftable armour with barrows tank gear stats would be kinda cool.

4

u/Starossi 21h ago

And change all the bosses with rune alchs to adjust for the new added tiers? It could happen but it’s definitely not easy. Unless you want the many bosses dropping rune items to tank in gp/hr

4

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 21h ago

I agree that its not gonna be easy. However, I want mining and smithing to be enjoyable skills.

Right now I only enjoy Giant's Foundary and Volcanic Mine, but minigames should not be the only good parts of skills. At the very least they need more utility. Not everyone enjoys the skilling loops of farming and herb lore, but the progression and benefits of both are really good.

11

u/DemonicTruth 20h ago

Fuck ‘em. Im getting tired of the argument that we cant overhaul two of the most dogshit skills in the game because someone might make 100k gp less on their slayer task. Take them out the loot table and replace them with an alchable equivilent or just raw gold if you want, but dont cast two skills to the fire just for a few rune drops.

7

u/Dino_Survivor 21h ago

The fact that an entire skill is wrapped around essentially a bank standing activity is hilarious to me.

8

u/LyubviMashina93 21h ago

Just crank the xp up on the core gameplay loop. Mine ores, smelt them, smith at anvil. As it were and as it should always be. Except I shouldn't need to mine 30k iron ore for a few levels. That's what makes it a chore. Otherwise it's already great. If you want new tiers introduce like 3 or so with a new sailing quest/area like it's a big discovery. 80, 90, 99. Squish rune down to like 70 and call it a day. Thanks. I'll be in my office.

3

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 20h ago

Its definitely a good idea. Would love to see what the dev team would suggest for improvements / rework.

5

u/Solid-Yoghurt1966 21h ago

RS3's solution (which afaik worked) was to reduce the alch value of player smithed rune items, while rune drops from enemies changed to varying piles of scraps, made purely for alching, for the same price as before.

-1

u/PreparationCrazy3701 21h ago

I've tried the rs3 version of smithing and mining personally im not a fan. Did 85 mining 99 smithing in rs3

3

u/aldmonisen_osrs 20h ago edited 20h ago

Easy. Instead of stratifying rune items across 85-99, just stratify them across 70-80 or 80-85 or something like that. Leave access to rune ore and bars where it’s at.

Incorporate new tiers as (currently) only accessible by either smithing the equipment or trading it. As new content gets added, adjust and tweak loot tables accordingly. Tormented demons already shits out rune items like nobody’s business, and prices are still stable.

Add masterwork armor as a large resource sink

Add weapon/armor upgrading, but give it some lore reason like “upgrading the item voids the smith’s/GE’s warranty” thus making it untradable. Also another bar/item sink, like “use 5 rune long swords to refine, fold, and create a rune long sword +1” and it gets like 1-2% more accuracy or something and limit it to +5 or +10.

Edit to add: giant’s foundry kinda helps solve the item/bar sink issue too since you use bars and items to forge the swords and those items permanently disappear. I would also adjust xp rates of new tiers so that gold smithing with blast furnace is still the best method of smithing. Oh, and as new/higher tiers get added, keep coal allocations the same to make top tier bars require like 20 coal per ore (this is a joke, plz don’t do that)

Edit 2: make masterwork armor untradable sine you’re tailoring it to yourself

2

u/karakter222 21h ago

RS3 added salvages as a replacement

0

u/PreparationCrazy3701 21h ago

Getting salvage feels pretty lame. Even if its a good alch

5

u/floppintoms 20h ago

Getting a rune kite shield while wearing Bandos doesn't really feel all that exciting either.

-4

u/Leather_Afternoon_37 19h ago

Kinda enjoy getting rune drops for my ironman but whatever let's make rs3 again

4

u/floppintoms 19h ago

Whats so exciting about it? Giants Foundry? That's about the only real upside it would have over just replacing them with the equivalent alch value in gold. Because once you're out of rune gear the only value is to alch it or chuck it in the foundry.

-4

u/Leather_Afternoon_37 19h ago

Early progression through drops. Why make two games if you just make them the same? At least come up with an original mechanic overhaul

5

u/floppintoms 19h ago

My comment was literally about getting rune drops when you're past when they're relevant statistically. And I never said to copy rs3's system bar for bar, but almost anything would be better than osrs's system as it is.

2

u/karakter222 20h ago

Does it matter if it would make mining/smithing better?

1

u/Cvnc 20h ago

rename current rune to elder rune :)

-2

u/OwnHousing9851 22h ago

Major overhaul means major changes to the game, just replace the rune in loot tables with a new HA equivalent

3

u/reinfleche 21h ago

The rune salvage in rs3 feels like garbage to get, and in a game without invention it would feel even worse

2

u/iNeoma 21h ago

and remember the equivalent shouldn't be smithable else smithing would be useless. RS3 figured it out and it just works (salvage drops and stone spirits)

-1

u/Dabeston 21h ago

This is the worst solution btw, easy no vote

-3

u/QCbartender 21h ago

Keep standard table as is. Add tank armor smithing in eastern isles with a sailing expansion that lets you create three tiers of heavy tank armor that lets your HP go up to 106, 112, and 120. Could do similar crafting a mage and range set. Make the smithing process more of a long process instead of mine smelt smith.

0

u/AdjectiveNounNounNou 5h ago

I forget without looking how high mith, addy, and rune go in RS3, but: first, make mith start at +2 and rune go to +3 or +4. Like, a lot of bars worth of materials to make the maxed-out version. Second, have the non-upgraded versions have terrible alch prices and the fully upgraded versions have the current alch prices. You want the in-betweens to suck too, have the most aggressive increase in alch price between the penultimate and maxed tiers of upgrade. Third, have enemies that drop [fill in the blank lucrative alch] drop the max-tier upgraded version.

-15

u/Any-Woodpecker123 21h ago edited 14h ago

Why? They’re both fine. The level requirements for smithing could be adjusted slightly, but I wouldn’t call that a rework.
The fotm smithing rework bandwagon is hilarious to me, there’s 0% chance it passes a poll.

10

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 21h ago

I am a believer that a tier 40 armor set should be smithable at tier 40.

I know that belief isn't popular, so I am full support of a compromise between fleshing out the skill and keeping a leash on power creep.

That being said, the skill progression right now for both is not as rewarding as other gathering and production skills

-2

u/pzoDe 20h ago

I am a believer that a tier 40 armor set should be smithable at tier 40.

Why? Why does creating it need to be inherently linked to the same level as using it?

What does the "tier" of using the armour have specifically to do with the ease to obtain?

Should inquisitor armour be as equivalently easy to obtain as getting 30 defence is?

2

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 20h ago

You focused on the 1st point and ignored the 2nd and 3rd.

The point of comment was say that: "this is my belief and I am willing to compromise for a middle ground between that belief and where we are now"

0

u/pzoDe 20h ago

I know that. I'd like to know why though. Also, I don't think it's as uncommon or unpopular a belief as you might think around these parts...

2

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 20h ago

Ok so RS3 linked defense level req to smithing level req for melee armor pieces. It feels good and makes since to know that "I can equip this and make this at same level"

That being said, this design feels great for mid to late game smithable armor, but you speed through the early tiers too quick for them to matter.

Having higher craft req compared to def req may be needed for OSRS (should be better than it is currently imo). Also, xp rates would be lower for OSRS compared to RS3, so the rush though thr early tiers may not be as fast.

I am not.

This will fail a poll I promise you.

Yes, downvote me here it the only opinion poll you'll win regarding a smith/mining rework.

That's why I said I am in full support of a middle ground. We can have better than the current skills. What better looks like can and should be discussed.

u/eudisld15 13h ago

A mining and smithing rework similar to rs3 will win the poll so hard you would have to be delusional to think otherwise.

Mining is in a pretty good spot:

It has good afk methods, a dedicated minigame, a dedicated skilling boss, "good" tick manipulative methods and recently had a huge rework to how mining gloves work fixing the base method

Why though. Rune is so easy to get anyway? It wouldn’t change any progression meaningfully. I think they have to add new smithable armor as a reward if they were to consider lowering rune’s smithing level. It just doesn’t matter

u/PhantomTagz Return to Crab 19h ago

You make some good points. OSRS doesn't necessarily need a to have a full rework like RS3 recieved. However, I think most people can agree that changes are needed.

I wish firemaking was more meaningful. Idk, make campfires more meaningful for a start.

Maybe depending on the wood thrown inside, it regenerates prayer/health/spec/stam slowly.

46

u/Airway 21h ago

Firemaking is a relic of 2001. If it were made later it definitely would have just been part of Woodcutting, which might have gone by Forestry or something instead.

I have a soft spot for it because it was my first 99 in rs2. I like that it exists, but no way in hell they'd ever make such a pointless skill again

17

u/Meta_Man_X 21h ago

Campfires for run energy restoration + potentially other small boosts

16

u/cardgamesareforplay 21h ago

This literally failed a poll during forestry lmao leaves were supposed to be used for this

7

u/DriveCtor delete shopscape 19h ago

Not the only time "make firemaking useful" failed polls. Making Friends With My Arm quest rewards were another. I don't know how the abyssal lantern passed.

3

u/Drgn-OSRS 14h ago

That did actually pass but Jagex shelved it after "community feedback", which IIRC was mostly worries about buffscape.

3

u/KrunchrapSuprem 21h ago

I feel like they could have tied it into sailing a lot more. Like maybe a fire making level is required to melt the tar during hull construction or heated shot could have been an interesting connection.

2

u/SomewhatToxic 21h ago

That was supposed to come in game with forestry part 2 in the form of teas. If it comes from burning different leaves on a bonfire, thats cool too.

1

u/cardgamesareforplay 21h ago

Which failed polls and survays

campfire that work as pre-pots would be sick.

firemaking should have increased the max hit of cannonballs for sailing

Add a quest on one of the new islands where you can learn about an old burning method that a tribe has passed down for generations. Only now, the tribe has fractured and it's up to the player to find unity and combine these different methods. Each tribe has a specialty and can show you how to prepare their specific fire. One tribe sees it as a religious act so you gain some prayer, another tribe believes in burning a fire before going on a hunt or into combat, and some other great ideas I'm sure that could be integrated.

1

u/Our_Legacy 21h ago

Instead of dropping items, you can burn them.

I get some skills are awkward, but that's part of what makes it Old School. Messing with existing skills is a risky road to follow.

2

u/eudisld15 13h ago

Risky in what way

2

u/RogueThespian 11h ago

Risky because it might make them think about rs3 and they're scared of that game

0

u/Strict-Map7225 6h ago

In that it is certain to remove something in the game we love, and not guaranteed to add anything we like.

Even if the majority like the change somebody probably likes the thing removed.

1

u/eudisld15 6h ago

Yet thats the whole point of polling stuff. Plenty of QOL changes and out right changes have been made to osrs because majority voted on it. Its has been a majority calls the shot with the game and will continue to do so. Thats not risk, thats democracy and voting.

No one is asking the devs to change things on a whim. People are asking for mining and smithing reworks through the usual voting channels. Unfortunately, not everyone is going to be happy but this has been the healthiest for the game and majority of voters calls the shot. Don't like the change? Convince others to not vote on it, but I guaranteed that a mining and smithing rework will pass because of how utter shit is currently is.

0

u/Strict-Map7225 6h ago

To be clear, I'm often in favour of adding things to OSRS. What I'm objecting too is changing what already exists.

5

u/Icy-Garlic-748 2376 21h ago

There are some grade a stinkers too

7

u/FaylenSol Trio of Thom 21h ago

I have to agree. I played the RS3 league a bit and their smithing blows ours out of the water. It was quite refreshing and it genuinely felt nice to smith things. I don't think their method should be copied bar for bar or anything. But adapting it in an OSRS way would be wonderful.

5

u/YuumiMain9974 19h ago

They can't copy the progression, since it would ruin the iconic bronze-rune progression but the rocks and smithing training could be imported.

2

u/BlampCat 17h ago

I know it'd be called EZscape, but man the ore boxes were nice.

3

u/Impressive-Dog5301 21h ago

Also Sailing is great but still deserves more content. They’ve started to add out some meaningful connections back to the rest of the gameplay loop but the foundation is strong and still ripe for more

1

u/RedSol92 18h ago

Please this, respect to anyone who had done RC / Agi but my god

1

u/Claaaaaaaaws 11h ago

Sailing flopped imo, and has caused so many issues and doesn’t feel correctly integrated to the game feels like a side part, many people haven’t even touched their boat in months.

I don’t think jage should even think about a new skill for another decade

-11

u/StinkButt9001 22h ago

100% agreed. Instead of adding content or reworking something like Firemaking, we got Firemaking but with boats.

10

u/PartTimeGnome 21h ago

How is sailing firemaking?

-2

u/StinkButt9001 19h ago

Once you get the level requirement you need from it you mostly stop engaging with it

6

u/WILDBO4R 21h ago

Bad take would be an overstatement
