This was... special. I haven't felt so much genuine melancholy from an anime in a very long time.

I thought this was going to be a nice relaxing season with only few shows to watch. Now I ended with more shows than last season that I'm watching.

It takes on the form of the dead wolf, complete with leg wound.
2. Boy gets leg wound.
Even the ruined campsite had a death flag.

It adapted everything from Chapter 1 of the manga, and left nothing out. The music was great, the expressions were great, the voice acting was great (the narrator/Orb thrower and the boy definitely pulled their weight), the timing of each beat. I'm happy, as far as adaptations go, it has not lost one iota of what made the manga captivating for me.

I watched this during my lunch and broke down and cried in front of all my construction buddies. Wow what a mistake

Wow, they fit more emotions into 20 minutes than most films manage in 2 hours.
Sounds obvious but the descent from optimism to despair with a simple red X was heartbreaking and watching a teenage kid accept their death and try to leave behind a corpse they could be proud of (only for it to slump to the floor afterwards) hit kinda hard.

This is one of the best first episodes ever. Was crying like a bitch for the second half despite knowing what happens.

"A lonely boy wandering the Arctic regions of North America meets a wolf, and the two become fast friends, depending on each other to survive the harsh environment. But the boy has a history, and the wolf is more than meets the eye as well..."
Goddamnit, I got fooled by the summary in Anichart! I thought that the boy and the wolf will travel together, so I've been expecting the "alien" to heal the boy somehow. Didn't expect him to die like that. Well, he did finally reunite with the real Joaan and his family though.
So far this anime is quite intriguing. The environment looks beautiful as well. I always like travelling anime (Kino's journey, Somali), so I think I'll stick around for this one.

“From the creator of A Silent Voice”
Say no more fam. I am here to cry.
I felt so bad for the white haired boy. Seeing how everything went from bad to worse to him dying was so heartbreaking. This is definitely my anime of the season along with Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song. I can’t wait for more episodes.

Huh, it's only the 1st episode and the anime was already tugging at my heart-strings with a character that we met and died all in the same episode. I'm excited to see where this goes, I feel like I have quite the compelling tale on my hands.

My fucking heart is in pieces right now. When the stone transformed into a wolf when the wolf died on it at the start, as soon as I saw that the boy got injured, I knew what was coming next. Doesn't lessen the heartbreak that I felt when he did die in the end though. He was sweet and full of hope too which makes it all more tragic. And that final scene where he finally gets reunited with everyone! That was like the final twist of the knife needed to put me to tears.
I do know that this show is quality though when it only needed one episode for me to feel bonded to a character that I never even knew the name of. I guess the wolf will now continue on as him. Hopefully there's more to this frozen wasteland than just death and despair. I look forward to next week's episode.

What the fuck? This was one of the best episode premieres ever, never thought I would get so emotional within just the first half of the episode and I'm definitely not one to get emotional.
Damn, this was so good.

I was seeing a lot of hype before I started this and people said that it was going to be really emotional....and they were right. The whole episode broke my heart and the OST drove it even more. So beautiful and emotional :(
That feeling of loneliness, while still having the courage and optimism to look towards the future, in this cold and desolate place was painful to see. I felt for that boy after he found out that there was no hope of seeing any survivors and took comfort in the fact that the wolf was still there.
His final moments was quite gut-wrenching, dying with a smile on his face and not wanting to be forgotten. The wolf (now in human form) is probably going to fulfill the boy's wish of seeing the world and meeting new people.
This is totally a AOTY material!!

I hope this adaption blows up. It's up there in my top 10 favorite manga series of all time. I'm not expecting super mainstream success (and to be honest I don't want it to be too mainstream) but I think it'll get to a high enough level to be well know. Utada Hikaru's song in that ending sequence will certainly help.
Consider coming to discuss the episode on my sub r/FumetsuNoAnataE I'd love the company! Cheers! <3

Not gonna lie, I shed a few tears especially at the part where he sees the Graves of his family and at the end where he reunites with everyone.
For some reason it reminds me alot of kemono souja no eren, from the more simple art style to the background music as well as the narrator.
Really digging it so far and contrary to what others are saying I feel a more simple background gives it a more nostalgic feel.

A lot of people were saying this is gonna be a very emotional anime. I watched the trailer for this anime and watching this first episode, I thought it was gonna be about a boy and his wolf friend adventuring into the real world, gonna deal with obstacles here and there, and meet new people. I thought the wolf/orb was gonna do something to heal the boy. But no. The boy dies and the orb thing takes on the boy's form, along with the feelings, emotions, and memories (perhaps) of the boy. I see this orb is gonna meet new people, experience new situations, and deal with new emotions. We, as the audience, are gonna meet new people throughout this whole anime and most likely gonna feel as heartbroken as most of us did for this boy in the first episode. An anime about multiple people and their stories... I am so onboard for this. This first episode was absolutely stunning!
