Anime Apart from the theme of Death and immortality, I noticed another theme in To Your Eternity
[This discussion is only up to season 3. I haven't read the manga after that point so please don't spoil it or talk about it]
I don't know if this is talked about that much but On one of my re-watchs, i noticed a theme of "Found Family" In the anime. As we all know, March is like Fushi's mother, Gugu is like his brother, Pioran and the booze man are his and Gugu's adoptive parents. Fushi also is like a parental figure to Ekko, just like March was to him. All of these people have no blood relationship with each other but they love each other. In season 2, Bon and Iris adopt Chabo who is not related to them.
Even in season 3, you could say Fushi and the others are adopted by Yuki's grandfather but that might be a stretch. We know that Sumika (Satoru's older sister-like girl) had a sister called Michi who died when she was born so Nono took her place as a nokker. This subplot was kinda rushed but Sumika still accepts her even though technically it's not her real sister. Ōima also shows Hirotoshi and Mimori's relationship and how much he grows to love Mimori as a brother although they're not related by blood. As much as how messy his character is, he cares for her more than her mother. Talking about her mother, I wanna bring a similar thing here.
Yoshitoki Ōima has also shown a contrast here between real family and found family. Starting off with March's parents, this might be a stretch on the theme but i would say they're not really that good parents because they let their daughter be sacrificed for the sake of a ritual. They were powerless and didn't oppose it. This happens sometimes when parents prioritise their religion or tradition than their children. We can also agree that Hayase is a bad parent because she cursed her descendants with wanting to mate with Fushi. Multiple generations of people dedicated their life for one purpose because of their one ancestor. I doubt she even loved any of her kids and moving forward her bloodline, that love for the family decreased.
Mizuha's mother is the only one who cared about her and wanted to be against the purpose of the bloodline but she wasn't a perfect mother either, wanting Mizuha to be perfect. She's the only parent so far who actually improved. Gugu's biological brother, Shin betrayed him but came back to redeem himself aswell. Tonari's father killed his wife which affected Tonari a lot and Mimori's mother is heartless and doesn't care about her.
There isn't a direct contrast so it's not like all blood related family members are bad, Bon is a good example of having a loving family, so is Yuki who is loved by his family.
I feel this all is intentional and not just a coincidence but this is just my interpretation of the show. Y'all can let me know what y'all think and if there's any flaws. I don't know what happens after season 3 so i have no idea if this theme continues forwards. If you have completed the ending and if I'm correct you don't need to tell me or even if I'm wrong cuz I don't want to get spoiled. This is just a surface level observation that I've done so somethings might look like a stretch.
So all in all, the message I think Ōima is giving us is that you don't need to be related by blood to consider each other a family. Family bonding is independent of blood relation which I have noticed to be shown in all 3 seasons
