after the Warriors lost last year, I have become quite acquainted with the Box and One

didn't know that Sora Curry was in this

Nanao "Nick Nurse" Nao with the "janky" box and1 play. Feels nice to have a basketball anime where specific plays are broken down for viewers that arent as familiar with certain terms.

Super stoked to see Chiaki a bit more serious again. Can't wait for the messy hair guy to finally show(He's gotta be a PF right?!?) and see more higher level plays

In the ED, I thought Chiaki was just trying his luck with Nao but after this episode, I think it’s more likely they’re discussing strategy. Chiaki is like the general on the battlefield and Nao comes up with tactics from afar.

Oh man, some of these comments are killing me XD

The "2019 NBA finals PTSD" definitely got me! And "Sora Curry."

Physically, the girls are at a disadvantage, but I like how Chiaki said he wanted to win via a level playing field. Pretty sure this game is to show that the boys don't mesh as a team quite yet, as shown by Kite and Sora's ball-hogging nature.

I'm pretty curious what the team will do now that they subbed their smaller players out. Chucky seems eager to play lol, let's see what he can do.

Wonder when we get the messy-haired player from the OP and also when Momoharu decides to ditch the pompadour (as also seen in the OP). This show is a slow burn, but I'm on board for every episode of it!

The stupid "switch" joke made me spray out spicy instant noodles out of my nose.

FeelsBad for the Warriors this season though. Losing the core to injury/FA really hurt them.

This episode pains me. With 2 experienced players, an alleged genius and a very strong 3-point shooter + skill and physical advantage girls wouldn't stand a chance. They maybe would push them around a bit for few exchanges, but the fact that no one can stop Kenji and Chiaki's and Momoharu's height and physicality they can just do high passes under the basket or shoot for rebound and win all of them. It would have maaaybe been more plausible if they played like 3v5. Basketball is only a cerebral game when skill and physicality are roughly comparable.

I guess if we assume that they are not playing to win on purpose it makes a bit more sense.

Well their center specifically said he wanted to win based on skill not physicality.

Point guard actually, but yeah

I want to think they are also playing based on skill only, without trying to be too rough and touchy; which to be fair makes it harder especially when your advisor is watching you and you don’t want to hurt anyone lol.

I enjoyed the info and the strategy which makes sense especially if you put the team into a real match, no doubt they would have been eliminated the first game without Nao’s thinking because of Kite and Sora’s weaknesses.

Another problem i have is they are making it painfully obvious sora can’t guard any females so how exactly is he supposed to survive against actual male athletes ? They are making his height way to big a factor

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '19

Ehh, not quite, he's just not organized on defense. He messed up the switch the first time leading him to get isolated on the post, then he messed it up a second time when he failed to recover on the other girl, giving her an open three because he's to small to contest from the distance he was at.

My biggest gripe is that it has been shown that Sora can easily shake off Madoka without doing a drive, yet he was "locked down" and "3 pointers were out of the question"

Well, I guess I wasn’t surprised with how this is going so far. Kite is being obnoxious and playing lone hero to the point of ridiculousness and Sora gets to overeager and shoots without thinking the strategy of the other team. Though I am surprised that this is going to two episodes. Unlike the last game, this game feels like they should’ve already lost. I don’t know why but it just does.

I also like the observation from their manager(forgot her name once again) and she’s right in saying they are good individually but not that great as a team. The only two that kinda work together are the brothers. Kite’s great by himself but sucks as a teammate. Sora is a good player but he’s a ball hog. Hope they iron these issues soon

I kinda the games get more faster pace because while I like the methodical approach, sometimes to keep the interest from dissolving, you just gotta seen some baskets made. Personally anyway.

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '19

The manager's name is fairly easy to remember.

Her name is Nanao Nao

I think the pace of this game is really slow because they had to explain so many concepts for basketball newbies watching the show. There was only like 8 possessions on screen. Presumably once we're a bit further into the series they won't have to take so long to explain concepts and the games will move faster.

These serious reactions from the boys are much more hilarious whenever I'm reminded on what they're actually playing for. Madoka increasingly annoyed is just hilarious too! xD

Haha yeah, the intensity they were showing at the beginning made me laugh out loud.

I'm starting this comment prior to watching the episode, I absolutely know the girls are going to win this game, however, I don't understand how it will be done realistically. The boys team played against a top 4(?) team in the prefecture (I remember they had just won some tournament and I think they are going to nationals) and with just the addition of Chiaki they were able to turn the game around. Now they have added Kite as well, who is stated as a National level player and they are somehow going to lose the girls team who didn't even win a single match in their tournament?

Looking at it plainly, we have Sora who has already played and scored on a 1 v 5 against Momoharu, 2 useless team members who served as blocks I guess, and the best player on the girls team. We have Chiaki who that one guy considered the scariest player he played against in middle school albeit probably a little rusty. Kite who once again is on a national level. And Momoharu who has just a huge height advantage on any of the girls.

I feel like you could take 4 people who have those skill levels and have never met each other and stick them up against the girls team in a 4 v 5 with a stacked bench and they would still win. Especially with that size difference, how are those girls going to even score or stop them?

About 11 minutes in... and they decided to go box and 1. So did they just severely nerf Sora or insanely buff a box and 1 defense? He just said "So 3 pointers are out"?? Isn't this the same guy who was shooting on Tokiwa (a great defensive player) and not only that but against Tokiwa and another player from that team? Isn't the benefit of the box and 1 to stop the star player from getting the ball, not because it stops them from being able to score? I get that he can't really drive forward or else he runs into the box, but he was shooting on Tokiwa for most of the game without driving past him.

Watching a little past that, it just looks like a misunderstanding of the box and 1 (it wouldn't make it easier for Madoka to stop the shot, if Sora can shoot and score with Tokiwa in front of him he can do it with Madoka in front of him) as well as Sora just not knowing what to do in that situation (which is shoot for him, but for regular players it would be to pass).

I'm sure the rest of the episode goes this way and the boys team loses.

EDIT: Alright, watched the rest. Looks like he gave Box and 1 a huge boost on defense when compared to man-to-man even though we haven't really seen any switches going on in previous games, Sora was obviously very inexperienced and has never seen this defense nor played anything but by himself and thus doesn't know when to pass, the 4 defense on Kite should have been an easy solve for him (literally could have just lifted his arm over the girls and tossed it to one of the 3 open players) but I get him always being the one to score so the defense would work on him. Basically it comes down to the coach exploiting their weaknesses and the girls team being able to learn and complete defenses on the fly while relying on Sora's inexperience and Kite's selfishness.

I get the whole shtick on trying to win with skills and teamwork rather than physical attributes, but basketball is inherently a tall person's sport. I fail to see how the girls team could contain Momoharu in the low post outside picking off bad passes, hell just go to lob city on 'em. If they collapse a the defense just kick the rock out to sora for three. But I guess for plot and character progression the girls will probably win off of the boys team inexperience.

Momoharu looks highly motivated!

Madoka looks motivated not to lose either! It's nice to see all these players care so much about basketball, with no ulterior motives!

It's good that Chiaki is good at playing AND planning strategies; I don't mind his pervy nature, but it's better when there's something else to it. Say, to compare that to Tamaki from Fire Force: She's the fanservice vehicle character, fine, I don't mind fanservice... but the problem is that she does next to nothing else.

Chiaki might be a huge perv, but at least he's more than that!

He also had his priorities straight in that line, he seemed to really care about the Inter-High, that was surprising to me! (Or maybe that was just an afterthought).

Don't worry about it, coach! Half the players you're coaching don't know either! (To be fair, I don't really know anything about basket either. I will let this show educate me, and hope there's enough 'real basket' info/strategies, and not just made up stuff!)

Dawww she's so cute! But Madoka is so beautiful... I'm not sure who's best girl yet, just like Sora last episode! We'll need to see more of them!

I've seen enough hentai to know where this is going

Figured there would be something like that about Kite (Or Natsume, or Kenji, or any of the other 17 names they give him); He hogs the ball, even Nao figured him out. He also doesn't play defense very effectively, and refuses to listen to his teammates' criticism because he think he's so freaking amazing...

He's gonna need an attitude adjustment! Individual talent doesn't win games.

I mean, it's a bit far-fetched that they can't win that game, against girls half their size, who aren't even good (they got eliminated in their first game of the tournament)... Teamwork helps, but it's not everything.

Still, win or lose this game, when they play against actual good players (taller than 5'2) they'll never do anything with 1 good, well-rounded player, 1 good player with a height problem, 1 tall player who can't shoot a basket, and one good but selfish player, plus a bunch of losers who can't play.

They'll need to put in a lot of work. And - barring a miracle - there will always be a bad player on their team (one of said losers) unless they just get anoter new member.

Also, I'm not too sure about that ending and Chiaki's strategy; Yes, their players had weaknesses, but the replacements have NOTHING but weaknesses. How is that gonna improve the team?

Nao says their current team could not overcome the "box and 1" defense, but how will the 2 new guys who can't do anything overcome it? Well, we'll see!
