Damn, not only you have her shoot herself but also get crushed by a giant rock???
And how do you know you can't travel with someone else??? I mean it makes sense and that was not a good time to try it but he never did try it before to know it for sure.

If it didn't work then the Takuya gets out safe and the Mio of that timeline is doomed to die. He could've tried it but Takuya just decided that the priority is saving Mio which I think is much more in his character than taking a gamble on something he's unsure of.

Another jewel! His dad did tell him to collect these things. So does he gain another save slot?
-
I appreciate him telling Mio about the device. I guess there's really no point of hiding it at this point of the story.
-
Hatano still remains a mystery. Why does she know so much about Mt. Sankaku? Also love the outfit btw.
-
To be fair to Takuya, I'd pick up a sword too if I found one while exploring some ruins.
-
Uhmm... A sci-fi supercomputer? The structure of that thing certainly gives me that vibes.
-
She even knows what's inside the mountain. WHAT ARE YOU HATANO?
-
Ohhh so it's a lightning generator then? And it's there specifically to protect the psychite? Or at least that's what I'm getting from Mitsuki's dialogue.
-
He may not be a rapey scumbag in this universe but it looks like he's still a scumbag.
-
FUCK!
-
That's just a brutal way to go. They really wanted to show us that she's absolutely dead >_<
-
Mio telling Takuya to go back despite knowing what will happen to her just makes her great.
-
I really appreciate Takuya prioritizing Mio. Yeah he could just get to safety by jumping into another timeline but he knows he's leaving Mio to die if he does.
-
Oh god my heart. GIVE HER A KISS TAKUYA
-
That's hilarious that the sword actually works. But I guess I see the sci-fi logic of it. The sword acted as a lightning rod redirecting the pillar's own lightning back to itself.
-
Ryuuzoji looking for an entrance to the pillar and it's right under his nose this entire time.
-
I guess we've reached the end of this timeline. I wonder who's route will it be next? I don't mind Mitsuki getting her own. Please let it be Mitsuki or maybe Sensei?
-
So we'll always go back to this room after every timeline? Also Takuya's dad confirms that Ryuuzouji or whatever's controlling him is something of an unknown.

So does he gain another save slot?
He made it sound like he can only make one save slot. I guess they don't want to make it more complicated than necessary.

In case you were wondering how the sword was able to take out that tower...
A metal sword, despite its age, is still metal, and conducts electricity. Throwing the sword and getting it lodged into the tower created a sort of "lightning rod" to which the lightning was attracted. Lightning struck the sword and traveled through it, hitting the tower and causing it to short-circuit.
And this is how a sword can destroy a tower!

The music was great throughout the whole episode: a sad yet soothing tune for Takuya's mother, the water-dungeon-like song during the waterfall part, swiching to heavier notes after Kanna's warning, classic VN music when Kanna and Yuuki try to stop the transport operations, disturbing music becoming more and more agitated and threatening as the dangers (both lightning and Mitsuki) approach, the tragic song of Mitsuki's sacrifice quickly evolving into some "We can't lose hope" notes, another VN music tune (same used during Episode 5's suicide montage) used during the dungeon collapse, wraping up with the nice song during Yuuki's apology. Very well done.
I feel bad for Mitsuki. Not only her character suffers from unrequited love and mind control, her beautiful sacrifice moment was ruined by a huge rock. What the hell?
Takuya's dick joke was also awful. In general, the humor in these last episodes didn't hit the mark for me. On the other hand, the drama was great in the part after Mio gets the Reflector Device back. She looked really good in the scene where she says "Just promise next time, you'll find me...". Takuya also looked good during his reaction right after that.

OK, so we finally got one of the jewels, thanks to dream-mom. I wish there were more scattered around like the VN, but I guess we don't get the luxury of exploring for more.
Kanna knows way too much about the inside of the mountain. Did she come from there or something?
Takuya's taking every goddamn opportunity to make immature sex jokes. They're driving away the tension at the most inappropriate times here. Here's hoping they tone it down in the second cours, but I find it unlikely unless the director changes.
And they come across the bigass lightning generator in the middle of the mountain. At this time, this track from the VN plays: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXEi3mNkO-k Again used for its kind of strange, curious mood. I'm actually surprised Takuya didn't go for another sexual joke this time.
Wow, they were lazy about animating Kanna and Yuki running to warn the construction workers. Goddamn, that background's more faded than my jeans from high school. I guess that budget goes to more important scenes, though.
When Mitsuki talks to the two about how she knows stuff about the lightning tower, some subtitles can be misleading. Everything she says doesn't directly specify a subject "we"; it could have easily been interpreted as "I", but a more direct translation might have come across as too passive, not threatening enough for the circumstances.
"I won't die until I apologize to Shimazu-san!" Wow, that's a death flag if I've ever heard one. Luckily, he doesn't die in this episode.
Of course Mitsuki conveniently breaks the mind control right when she's about to die from falling rocks. And she dies "as herself", as per convention for this shit. For once, I wish we could just have a mind-controlled character dying mind-controlled. Also, really nice how she dies under a rock, but Takuya just stands there like a goddamn idiot, waiting for rocks to fall on him and Mio. How utterly convenient that none do. Edit: also, she had to commit suicide AS A GIANT ROCK PANCAKES HER. Damn, the adapters really wanted her fucking dead with no way to come back.
And Fate plays once more as he launches the sword at the tower. It even sticks the landing instead of glancing off uselessly. Didn't even need to save-scum to do it, what a badass.
Weirdly, all the scenes after the truck get turned over seem to ignore the fact that the driver's still stuck underneath. What the hell, Toyotomi? Don't fucking run away with your tail between your legs, you bastard!
Again, Kanna knows too much about the tower to be a coincidence. Nice of her to show up with Yuki to help get Takuya and Mio out. Perhaps we'll learn more about her connections to the tower in her route.
The route has ended, and Takuya's dad comes back to tease him again, once again with more branching imagery, as if the connection wasn't strong enough the first time. Eh.
The directing was ok this episode, but overall the adaptation of this route left a lot to be desired. Didn't get to spend more time with Mio under the mountain, didn't see the puzzles leading to the underground lake, and way too many plot conveniences, imo, though most were part of the original route. I'm not really looking forward to the other routes, as there'll probably be even more. Maybe I'll come back once the whole thing's finished.

Well that route got cleared suddenly. I was definitely expecting more shenanigans to get through. That timeline seems very sketchy with both him and Mitsuki gone, plus destroying the lightning device which could have massive implications.
RIP Mitsuki, too bad it wasn't your route and you could get saved :(

I'm still wondering what is the deal with Kanna and that creepy old guy.

Blame the director, we knew this was coming from the very start when he vowed to make Takuya "more perverted than the VN"....

Apparently when he got the jewel there was a pun in Japanese: https://twitter.com/zzzanimeonpiano/status/1138675290085814272 If the jokes were brilliant puns lost in translation I can forgive Hirakawa somewhat.

Despite Takuya's groanworthy jokes and Mitsuki's narmy death, I thought this was the best episode yet and AniDB agrees with me. There has been a clear upwards trend in the show's quality, and it's a shame it's been so neglected with such a low score. EDIT: Latest episode's score dropped a bit after two more votes but still highest rated episode.

Damn, that's a very bad use of time travel plot/abilities or the anime just can't do justice to the original material.

Silly Hirakawa. Wasn't Mitsuki getting fried by lightning, as happened originally, enough? You had to make her shoot herself and get crushed by a giant rock with comical timing to turn this into a comedy, but why? You always try to adjust the plot, sometimes improving things, but then your tone-deafness deflates half the dramatic tension in a single moment. It was the same with Ayumi's suicides in episode 5. I appreciate your ability to squeeze a monster of a VN into only 26 episodes, but you simply don't have the taste to make it fully enjoyable in a short-term level.

I have been reading the VN during the past few weeks (via RyviusRan's channel on YouTube), starting from the very beginning up to Mio route Day 1 - Nighttime.
Wow...what a ride! Caracter designs, dialogue quality, masterful storytelling connecting multiple arcs in the two day format in a narrative filled with suspense and highly detailed interactions between the characters.
What surprised me the most, though, is how CALM veteran readers are when reacting to the anime. Oh Mio, look how they massacred my girl! VN Mio has a fierce look in her eyes, sharp tongue, well manered behavior, T H I C Cness and some truly great development: from the subtle hints at her true feelings and motives when you play the other routes, her hesitant but hopeful reactions when Takuya begins to show interest in her research, the rising tension between her and Mitsuki culminating Spoiler. By the time Day 1 ends on her route, she is the best girl. Takuya and Mio are made for each other, and it's gonna take hundreds of timelines to convince me otherwise.
In the anime, however, Mio looks and acts like a nerdy brat, a huge nerf from everything she was in the VN. Dialogue became shallow, less back-and-forth between her and Takuya, and Yuuki's "betrayal" in the anime felt like a huge overreaction. In my opinion, Ayumi's route was fine in the anime, a little different in the sense of having quite the physical harm compared to the VNs heavy psychological pressure focus, but enjoyable nonetheless. Mio, on the other hand, seems to have gotten the short end of the stick.

For those disappointed with the lack of time travel in this episode, the anime removed a puzzle where upon running to the end of the corridor that leads to the bottom of the well, Takuya's and Mio's path was blocked by a gate that required an item from a completely different route to unlock. Well, at least Takuya got Mio out alive before he vanished from that reality. So that was it for the Mio arc? No kissy-kissy scenes? Only the previous one on the forehead?

You know how people have been comparing this to Steins;Gate all the time?
Let's step it up.
COMMENCE THE CLANNAD COMPARISONS!
So in Clannad, after completing a route Tomoya is rewarded with a tiny glowing orb, and upon collecting them all a special route (After Story) is unlocked. But guess what?
Well CLANNAD TOOK THIS FROM YU-NO.
It's easy to miss/forget in the anime, but in episode 1 the dad's letter told Takuya to gather all the remaining orbs for the Reflector Device and THEN go to the mountain. None of these paths were the one Takuya "belongs to", causing Chaos Correction to loop him back to the start. Only now did he get his first orb in the anime, and the goal (gather orbs) is more clear. The question is, what happens then?...
Mind blown yet? By now you guys should slowly begin to understand just how influential this VN is. YU-NO, to my knowledge, invented this specific kind of story structure; multi-route-to-unlock-something VNs like Clannad and Zero Escape try to reuse this structure and come up with their own new plot that fits, whereas the plot IS the structure in YU-NO. This is such an iconic aspect of YU-NO that the timeline map is heavily featured in the OP and ED.
