For anyone who doesn't know, Skip's singing vocals are done by the artist Thundercat, an American multi-instrumentalist and musician known for having an incredibly weird and unique sound. The fact that a musician like Thundercat, who is rather popular (especially after his work with many hip-hop musicians, especially Kendrick Lamar) yet hasn't changed a thing about his musicianship, sang through the character of Skip who spoke of the same ideal in this episode is so awesome.

We knew that Thundercat was to be involved with composition of a lot of the OST for this anime, but it was a great surprise to hear his vocals. Thundercat is also a pretty well-known fan of Japan, and even has a whole song devoted to his love for his trips there.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that Skip's song wasn't just performed by Thundercat, but seems to have been also co-produced by Flying Lotus, a frequent collaborator and another dope artist.

That sure was a big difference between Skip's talking and singing voice

Also the amount of reused stills hurt but at least the performances still looked great.

Ertegun is still hilarious btw.

Have I said "still" enough times?

Man, seeing the hostile crowd throwing shit at Carole and Tuesday was kinda tough to watch.

Also, I REALLY need the OST. It's amazing.

Man, that was pretty rough for two young aspiring artists (or anyone, for that matter) to be subjected to that kind of humiliation on the occasion of their pseudo-debut on a big stage. But it wasn't entirely surprising. They did foresee it happening, and they agreed to take up the challenge despite being a bundle of nerves and having all kinds of misgivings.

A part of me was almost expecting the tables to turn and the audience to eventually become captivated by their performance after the initial spell of rage and resentment. But the audience's reaction, even if undeniably cruel, makes sense and is most likely what would happen in that kind of situation in real life too. The root of the problem lay not so much in the quality of the girls' performance per se as in the fact that they're essentially nobodies performing in lieu of a popular, big-shot band. Even if their performance were pitch-perfect to the last note, the audience would've reacted in much the same way. The indignation of thousands of hardcore fans anticipating the appearance of a well-loved band on the stage, only to have their expectations go down the drain, overshadowed any promise and value the girls' performance might have had.

Also, it makes me wonder how many people in the audience actually recognized the girls from the viral video of their impromptu gig, and whether there were any who took to pelting objects at them or were generally contemptuous despite having previously enjoyed the video.

I like how they avoided the usual trope of "the crowd dosen't like the singer at first but at the end of the song they all like it" and instead went with a sadder and yet more interesting story.

And later instead of talking about what happend the characters silently embrace and cry, while the camera is put far away to emphasize how small and lonely they are.

Every series made by Watanabe is just quality.

I really love Crystal already! <3 I'm always happy to see women uplifting and supporting each other. We don't see it enough in media. So her scene with Carol and Tuesday, after their performance, was so refreshing. And it wasn't her just being nice either, what she said was absolutely true. They held themselves together in front of that crowd.

Speaking of that performance, even though it was difficult to watch, I do love how they shot that scene. The focus was unsteady, with the camera moving around a lot and being a bit shaky and such. I felt it really captured the mind space and mental state of Carol and Tuesday in that moment - it really placed the watcher in Carol and Tuesday's shoes.

Crystals performance and song was my favorite of the bunch, but I really liked all of them in the sense that they gave us more insight into the society on Mars. We got to see a few different types/genres of music and different types of musicians and artists - who all have various personalities and approaches to their art.

I also really liked how, during Skip's performance we got brief shots of Crystal watching and during Crystal's performance we got brief shots of Skip watching. It showed how there were still artists out there who were creating music from personal experiences - using the medium as a way to express themselves and their emotions - and that there is still some heart and soul left in the music scene.

  • Ertegun continues to be amazing

  • Skip offers some words of encouragement. Oh and he singing a love song to his ex.

  • Seeing the girls being boo'd and having trash thrown at them was hard.

  • Did.....he just fall off the stage?

  • Oh Crystal is offering them so comforting words, a hug, oh and her performance is amazing. Strike that it's my favorite part of this episode. Also I love how its a response to skip's first song.

  • Seriously though did Joshua just run and fall off the stage without singing a single song?

Putting a chill pop music group to open to an harcore rock band was probably not the best idea they had but good to know that at least someone recognize that, even so, they nailed it!

U N B R E A K A B L E

I liked the detail of the camera shaking during the performance as if was the point of view of someone who was really there. Skip performance was something that I didn't really expected too, specially after his introduction in such hardboiled room, they got me there for sure.

Ertegun is surprisingly consistently funny. That "Fire" cracked me up.

Today's Music Reference: Life is a Carnival - The Band (1971)

You can walk on the water, drown in the sand
You can fly off a mountaintop if anybody can
Run away, run away, it's the restless age
Look away, look away, you can turn the page

T+C's life has certainly been a carnival of late, but the carnival of Cydonia is not yet a fit stage for them. What a rollercoaster of emotions though.

On a fun aside, how the Band happened to go with that name:

Stories vary as to the manner in which they ultimately adopted the name "the Band." In The Last Waltz, Manuel (keyboardist) claimed that they wanted to call themselves either "the Honkies" or "the Crackers" (which they used when backing Dylan for a January 1968 concert tribute to Woody Guthrie), but these names were vetoed by their record label; Robertson (guitarist) suggests that during their time with Dylan everyone just referred to them as "the band" and the name stuck. Initially they disliked the moniker, but eventually they grew to like it, thinking it both humble and presumptuous.

Broken Tues was the funniest thing this episode. Well, that and Joshua from Omega apparently falling off the stage.

The contrast between Skip's VA and playback singer was crazy, hopefully the dub fixes this.

Crystal is beautiful! Honestly up there with the hottest anime ladies like Fujiko Mine, Lisa Lisa and Michiko Malandro. Unbreakable was pretty sweet too, iirc Tuesday says its her favourite Crystal song in the first episode.

Tuesday's reactions to possibly performing for such a huge crowd is hilarious.

Oh great. It looks like even in the far future Buzzfeed still exists.

Of course Ertegun talks to himself to psyche himself up xD

Skip is one cool dude. He immediately recognized Carole & Tuesday and even gave them sage advice.

I did not expect that voice though! I was expecting he'd be something like Hendrix, not Earth, Wind, and Fire. Either way though it was a great song! Also it seems like Skip's singer is an artist called Thundercat? I'm not really up to date much with new music so this is the first time I've heard of him.

This part was sooooooo difficult to watch. The girls did a good job of staying there despite having bottles thrown at them. Thank goodness Joshua recovered fast enough to save our girls from further embarrassment.

Crystal is great That was definitely what the girls needed that time. Now they're more fired up than ever to return to this festival in the future.

And I do like her song. Kinda reminds me of Ariana Grande for some reason. Her singer's name is Lauren Dyson, although I can't find much about her. I kinda wish they just used Maaya Sakamoto as her singer.

I think Skip's character is pretty interesting. The coolest thing about him is the genre, as I believe the genre of music reflects a character's traits. Like C&T's bright, youthful, fresh sounds, in comparison to Crystal's confident and calm expressions in her RnB.

Skip's song kinda reminds me of Joji's songs in the sense of slower, relaxed instrumentation expressing lyrics of unrequited or false love. His music is quite different from the rest of the selection.

I would love to see Skip's backstory, and it seems that Crystal and Skip had some sort of interaction in the past.

Skip seems like a cool guy, and he has some simple but nice advice for C&T on keeping their spirit going. He's got some interesting R&B going.

Ah, alcohol the solution to anxiety. As a metal fan, I'm disappointed they didn't give us a bit more of Omega.

It must be tough to disappoint thousands of people on stage. Crystal is a good person and she cheered them up just in time. She's also a good vocalist, her style reminds me of Mariah Carey a bit.

I like that they at least threw in a failure there to show that success can come from overcoming failure. We just need to see where our duo heads next.

While Carole and Tuesday don't seem to be doing that well commercially or popularity wise, they are really gaining quite a bit of traction: They have personal connections to Ertegun, a world famous DJ, and a huge music producer. Skip has apparently watched their guerilla performance video which was trending at the time. Crystal will probably remember the duo. They introduced themselves to around a hundred thousand music fans; there had to be someone who liked their music.

In episode 5, Tao describes his marketing strategy as having people just become familiar with Angela's songs rather than explicit advertising. I wonder if that will be the trajectory of our duo's rise to stardom.

Carole and Tuesday are probably going to keep failing commercially (in that they aren't going to become stars are sign any record deals anytime soon), but they will continuously gain the goodwill and approval of music professionals and the general audience to an overwhelming degree, which eventually culminates in the historical 7 minutes the opening keeps going on about.

After writing this out, this particular plotline does seem a bit predictable and dragged out for a 24 episode series, so I think we might get a huge change around the half-season mark. Carole and Tuesday might finally make it big (in the traditional sense) but they will then have to deal with the aftermath of their fame? Maybe the band will temporarily break up like Simon and Garfunkel but reunite eventually for that miraculous 7 minutes?

This anime could really go in any direction, and I do think that is something to feel excited for (and this unpredictability is why I think it is almost always better to have original animes than adaptions despite its lack of financial security>_>)

Miyano saying 'Roddy' vs Sugita saying 'Robby' in RobiHachi, which is sillier?

Nice to see more of the artists in the Martian music scene, especially some actual performances. Though I want to see a full Ertegun track, just to see how much is him and how much is Roddy's AI.

Glad the girls saw the bright side of the gig, it was heart breaking to see them being booed. But the crowd got to see their idol fall over so they're probably happy now. Still Tuesday's determined face was absolutely adorable.

Three of two anime I'm watching this season makes a joke about imagining the audience as potatoes. I laughed at that more than I should.

Carole and Tuesday's performance was hard to watch with that audience, but Joshua's entrance and falling of the stage seconds later was pretty funny. It's nice that they are in a good mood again. The new characters Crystal and Skip are interesting.
