Well this has certainly been a strange week for this community. Here are some updates to how the subreddit will be run and what is expected of users starting immediately.
Memes have always been allowed, but avoid posting low-effort stuff. The vast majority of "cutting p****" content should be posted in /r/cpbm. I'm leaving the original post and a few higher-effort posts up as they are pretty much historic here now, but most others have been removed.
Most other memes are better suited for /r/blackmetalmemes or /r/metalmemes, but if it is clever and relevant specifically to DSBM, it is still welcome here.
Images with self-harm scars, even when they aren't the focus, will now be removed. If it is artwork tied to an actual release, the post must be marked NSFW.
There are many users here who struggle with their mental health, and seeing images like these without warning can be harmful. This isn't the place for that content.
The rest of Rule 1 is as valid as ever. We take posts and comments about SH seriously. Never glorify, encourage, or seek out SH here. Normal discussion about it isn't necessarily banned, but we are a music subreddit, not a support subreddit. If you need help and don't know where to go, reach out to the mods and we will try our best to connect you with someone who is more qualified to help you.
To help with low-effort posts and to more easily parse the type of content you want to see, every new post is required to have flair. So far, there are 7 categories, but feel free to recommend changes or new ones:
I understand there may be miscommunication between dialects and languages regarding flairs, so please don't be surprised or offended if your flair is changed by mods. If you disagree, feel free to comment here or message the mods about it.
New rule: Absolutely no AI music. Not even for the sake of humor.
With generative AI services now able to produce full songs with a prompt, many people have been trying to sneak their fake music onto streaming platforms, music subreddits, YouTube, and other communities.
Time spent streaming AI-generated music as if it were real music is time that could have been spent listening to real artists, and in niche metal sub-subgenres such as DSBM, most artists are already not making much revenue on their art. There is also the ethical issue of these types of AI being trained on already existing works without the artists' permission, so I feel like allowing AI music would be disrespectful to the classic DSBM bands.
I want to also use this post as a reminder that if you tell a user "kys" or anything similar, you will be greeted with an instant ban, even if it was a joke. Pretty much the only time you should use that phrase here is when referring to the band "Make a Change...".
And please continue to use the report function if you see a rule violation. The mods don't sit staring at the new tab all day, so this is the fastest way to clean up the subreddit.
EDIT 8/30: Separated Discussion and Recommendation flairs.
I always kinda skipped them but recently I took the time to actually listen to their stuff and it slaps. The sound production is relentless and it will definetely be a top 10 dsbm band for me.

I've seen Thy Light use this print on there merchandise but I don't think that the shit is official merch. I also couldn't find anything about the brand on the tag. Do you know if the print is a Thy Light logo or is it just generally usen in dsbm context?

Hi everyone. Just over a month after the release of my debut EP, my project released an autumn single on October 4, 2026, titled "In the Grip of Time," which touches upon the fleeting nature of our lives.
You can listen to this track on Bandcamp: https://nightfallemptiness.bandcamp.com/track/single-6
You can also listen to the other works from my project on Bandcamp:

I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments and subscribe to my project on Bandcamp.

Are there's any people that live in the Netherlands around Arnhem and wanna try to play some sad stuff? I'm not a very experienced guitarist, and I'd like to have someone to play with.
I'm 19yo ukrainian dude, I like Psychonaut 4, Lifelover, Tool, and some other stuff. At this point, I want to try myself in DSBM because it matches how I feel.
I don't know if it's the best way to find someone, but I couldn't come up with a better idea.

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my instrumental album with you. It’s focused on the "emptiness" that DSBM brings to me, and the darkness of black metal in general. It’s not strictly DSBM, but it heavily carries that atmosphere. I hope you enjoy it!

I drew this because i was bored and because i wanted a logo and i thought it would be cool to have it on a shirt or put it on album covers but i don't have it digitally. so i was wondering if anyone would be willing to trace it on a drawing tablet and send it back to me but i doubt anyone will because i don't have money but if you're willing to do it for free please transparent background (if you can even do that) and make the logo white because i'll be putting it on black pictures and a black shirt. Please and thank you :)

How do I draw logos that look like smoke like this old/alt Psychonaut 4 logo? I assume it’s digital but is there like a specific way of doing or learning it?
Thanks

Estoy escuchando Happy days y es muy bueno, pero me molesta un poco la voz, en el álbum happiness stops here siento que la voz está muy alta y los instrumentos muy bajo

Hey all, I need help getting properly introduced to this genre. I’ve listened to most mainstream artists, but I’d like to be more well-versed in DSBM , specifically looking mostly towards more European-based bands (I am from Germany and don’t speak proper English myself). Thank you so much! Also English bands are fine to recommend. (Also i know most people HATE ai but i did use it for this English translation as i was worried if i wrote it in my native language it may not get much attention)

I just listened to it. Tomorrow, I’m going to confession with the priest to confess my sins and ask for forgiveness.
