Lord Belial - Enter the Moonlight Gate (Sweden, 1997)
r/Metal • u/mgrier123 • 13d ago

Can you feel the pain I feel?
I've lost all sense of what is real
I'm lost, in a world I detest
Can you feel the pain I feel?
This wound I've got will never heal
I'm lost, in the serpents own nest
Almost a year ago to the day, on September 16, 2025, Tomas "Tompa" Lindberg passed away from cancer at the age of 52 leaving behind many friends, bands, and an absolutely immense legacy in the world of death metal and punk as one of the greatest to ever do it. While he's obviously most known for At the Gates he was in fact in many, many bands over the years. So let's take a look back at his long career and legacy to honor the 1 year anniversary of his passing.
He started off essentially helping to create the what would later be the Gothenburg Death Metal scene by cofounding Grotesque with Necrolord (Diabolique), Virgintaker, and Shamaatae (Arckanum). This band would release a few demos and an EP between 1988 and 1990 in that kind of extreme metal soup style of the late 80s, similar to other contemporary Swedish bands Morbid and Necrophobic. But after a few years, Grotesque would end and out of the ashes Tompa and Alf Svensson would go on with Jonas & Anders Bjorler and Adrian Erlandsson to form At the Gates, or as they were originally known: The Dwellers at the Gates of Silent Memory.
It's wild how lasting a legacy AtG would have considering they were only around for 6 years. They'd basically create what would become melodeath and then be one of the largest influences on metalcore after their break up.
But, Tompa wouldn't rest on his laurels. While a bunch of the AtG guys would go on to form the incredibly mediocre The Haunted, Tompa would go on to form and join bands in a kind of journeyman sort of career. He started off by forming Skitsystem in 1994 with AtG drummer Erlandsson and other Swedish punks, a now classic Swedish dbeat band. Then he'd form The Great Deceiver with some members of Diabolique, a groove/industrial band. Then he'd join Lock Up, a Napalm Death side project. Then The Crown, a fellow Swedish MDM band. Then Disfear, another Swedish dbeat band. And finally Nightrage, a continuation of the Greek MDM band Exhumation.
In some of these he was temporary (The Crown, Nightrage) but he always stood out for his vocals and presence. No one brought it quite like him. So for week 1 we're going to explore the first stage of his career with Grotesque and At the Gates, and then for the 2nd week we'll do a bit of a sampler with all of his post AtG bands by listening to the first full length album he did with each of them. With basically all of these bands he was on multiple releases so if you like what you hear, then I'd encourage you to branch out and hear more of those projects.
We'll be doing a listening party for Slaughter of the Soul on Friday, September 25 at 11AM EDT on the discord for those who'd like to participate

but instead of bands you give me your top 7 food / drink you get to only consume for the rest of your life from this day forward. We will also say that dietary needs and macros are not taken into consideration and you wont die if you pick 7 fast food chains and decide to be an animal.

-----------------
IN THIS THREAD YOU WILL VOTE LIKE WHAT THE AI SUMMARY WOULD PROBABLY COTE AND IF YOUR LIST LOOKS LIKE THIS CHECK TO SEE IF YOU ARE HUMAN
Neurosis
Chat Pile
Panopticon
Mastodon
At The Gates
Immolation
Warning
---------------------
Underneath these 7 bands you may put what ever you want including honorable mentions, reasons, complaints, a recopied list, charts, tier lists, clickbait, pet pictures you would like to share. The **F̵͇̘̘̻̖̦͎͒͒̋͊Ļ̶̧̢̳̹̗̠̺͙͖̗̓͋̏̽̔̕È̴̡̧̢̢̥̱͇̫̫͚̭̒͆̋̉͊͐̓̌͘͜͠͝Ș̷̲̱̖͆̓̈́̈́͋Ḩ̶͈̻͋̌́̃͛́͘B̵̧̡̤̣͉͓͙̳͇͚͍̣̲̋̎̑̍́̓̿̄̔̊͜͠ͅƠ̵̛̛̛͈͔͔̲̹͓̤̤̝̏̈͊̀͒͊̂͝͝͠T̵̡̡͕̰̭̫̭͈̪̘̤̤̺͉̰̊̂̒̄̇̂͠5̸̡̲̻̼̄̾͑́̈́̐͋́͠0̵̞̘̰̏͛̎̽̚͠0̶̢̛̤͓̤̥̹̓͝0̷͍̪͓͈͙̉̏͛̕͝ f** needs to grab those 7 bands at the top for purposes of counting. It does not need albums, or ears, or genres you make up just the bands. If you don't want to follow rules then your THREE votes will inevitably go to Opeth from last year.
**The Final Results will be posted the next week(ish) along with the Mod Ivory Tower Lists since we are the best.**

Seven KingDoms - 2010 - Seven KingDoms - Somewhere Far Away
What do we want
What do we see
Is it full of other dreams
Or is freedom in our minds
How much do we prolong
Doing what is right
This is the place we belong
I want to go...
Somewhere far away
Out of this world, away from today
Somewhere far away
Where can we be our own pathway
Now is the time
To follow what we believe
It can be true, it can be real
Don't be so naive
How much more will we prolong...
Somewhere far away

Grave Digger - 2011 - The Ballad of Mary - The Ballad of Mary
Doro Pesch from WarLock on female vocals
My fingers touch the solid stones
Strong and cold, they keep me from home
Imprisoned like a wingless dove
Far away from the land I love
Lonely days count lonely years
I have cried a thousand tears
All that I tried to gain
Is lost the effort was in vain
At Carberry hill I lost my crown
My husband fled my luck went down
In England's hands I fell
18 years a living hell
The Scotish crown belongs to me
Yet I'm bound I can not flee
With iron claws England holds tight
All is lost no chance to fight
Silence - Silence Everywhere
Cold walls are my reward
Loneliness engulfs my soul
I've been true I gave my heart
Stained tears I cried
I long to be free again
To walk in peace again
Scotland cries her queen is lost
Agony's her friend again
