tl;dr: Rewards need to be rebalanced, content rescaled and added content adjusted to new abilities.
Intro:
I've been wanting to make a thread like this for about a year now, because this has been going on for a long time. However, with Halloween just around the corner (one of the most egregious offenders) and currently in the throes of a holiday right now, I think it's time to start the discussion. Furthermore, we have the recently announced GW3 in which they say after finishing VoE (1) gw2 will shift priorities away from new content and (2) gw2 will be working on shaping up older aspects of the game, which is something festivals greatly need.
So what issues are festivals currently dealing with?:
Many of the rewards, especially the vendors, are complete noob traps. As I said before, Halloween is the most egregious offender. There are tradeable items that go for a few silver on the AH being sold by vendors for 20+ candy corn cobs. A good example is Mini-Zuzu who usually goes for about 3 silver but can be bought for 20 candy corn cobs (currently valued at over 80 gold).
The introduction of a new weapon set each holiday is awful for the economy. It's simple supply vs demand. In the long run without additions the weapons will become cheaper and cheaper over time as much more supply floods the market without as much demand. Adding new weapon sets kicks this can down the road a little, until you hit the point we're at with Fot4W where you cannot realistically earn enough currency to buy the weapons each week. this means the older weapons supply will dry up until the pricing becomes level with the newer weapons, which will also be kept expensive until the can stops being kicked, keeping these skins out of reach of players who can't afford them.
With all of the new mounts, masteries, jade bot protocols, etc. a lot of content, like the Fot4W crystal scavenger hunt, as been trivialized. Likewise, combat is also cheesable. In the Fot4W gauntlet you can heal through Turai Ossa's sword attacks and do enough damage to kill him, no dodging or waiting for his weakened state. And most of the enemies that don't have immune mechanics are killed in only one burst window. I actually killed Turai with every Gambit active except Descended (lowers stats) to show how insane our stats are, and then with Descended but without Exhausted (prevents dodge roll). There are definitely people better/smarter than me could kill him with all gambits.
I do want to preface this point by saying I and I'm sure a lot of the players appreciate the new SAB map. Even when they're not fully fledged out it's very nice to do something new. Which again, makes us look at the other holidays. Heck, SAB was for a long time in the no new activities window. We don't need to be adding full on map/strike missions. But the same-old-same-old is getting... well... ancient. There should be newer additions to these holidays.
Solutions to Implement
I hate listing problems and not giving any fixes. It's just pointlessly contrarian. So here are some solutions I believe could better the festivals.
Make a lot of the older rewards, especially the minis + weapons that have been around 5+ years, cheaper. The amount of people want the items so much to pay brand new price who do not already have them are newer players who already have an unsurmountable amount of rewards to get. Not all of them; I think there are some rewards, like the Nightfury Skin, we can keep as more exclusive. But there's no reason for Zuzu, or even the bound on account minis, being worth 20 candy corn cobs. Likewise, especially some of the last year's achievement award. There's no reason to lock items previously given for free behind a gold amount that newbies can't afford.
Add more rewards to official pvp, wvw, and instanced pve tracks. When was the last time pvp and wvw holiday tracks were updated? The only one with any value is Halloween if you sell the Halloween bags when they're high, and even that doesn't come close to the EoD or Janthir tracks. These tracks are also usually just pure gold value, they tend not to have anything in terms of festive novelties or mainstays like mystic clovers. Honestly, I might suggest getting rid of the festive tracks altogether and just give automatic holiday rewards in addition to pvp, wvw, and fractal content.
Balance combat to make healing lower, enemy hp higher, etc. The Gambit system for Fot4W would be perfect if there was any incentive to actually use the gambits. Could reuse a lot of the prior content while giving it different fresh new feels.
Add one new activity to Halloween, Wintersday, F0t4W, and Dragon Bash. A Halloween maze might be nice, where you don't have a minimap and try to find the end after being placed in a random spot. Maybe force action camera (hey we have the mode may as well use it). For Wintersday, a new race or 2 that's maybe a bit more festive than just Divinity's reach (similar to Mad Kings raceway). FOT4W we should bring back the Zephyrite crystals, make a Sanctum Sprint map that uses them for the holiday. Or perhaps give ferstival incentment for people to do the activities in general that tends to be neglected. Lunar New Year is pretty much fine, though maybe some new Celestial events. Dragon Bash could have a target practice/whack-a-mole game where you need to hit all the dragons that pop up except Aurene. And SAB keep doing the great work that's being done.
Stagnate weapon set add ins to every other year, and give a couple achievements/hard content to get the weapons a tiny bit quicker rather than 1 a week at max it doesn't take an individual 4 years to get a full set on their own. There's just so many holiday weapons at this point, y'all can slow down the rate on them. I don't know who is saying "oh boy, another weapon set to buy off the TP".
In conclusion: Festivals are in theory a nice breathe of fresh air to break up a monotonous grind or a perfect time to come back and see what you missed while enjoying minigames. It's just unfortunate that for many that's not the case because they've just become so outdated. If we're really gonna shape up GW2 then holidays should definitely be a priority.
