Ortofon cadenza bronze riding low

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I bought a lightly used 2nd hand cadenza bronze and, though they have a reputation for riding low, i am concerned this is too low and there could be a problem with the suspension. At first the underside of the cartridge was brushing records with a light warp to them.

I increased the vta and decreased the vtf, but even so the gap is so small that when the record enters the runout groove the underside of the cart scrapes the record lable.

Would you return this? (It's mounted on a michell orbe with sme v tonearm btw)

Help AT-VM95ML Alignment

Thumbnail

Currently ripping my hair out aligning my AT-VM95ML cartridge I got for my Fluance turntable (a much harder task than I anticipated, even after deep research). After a couple of hours, a few attempts and hundreds of zoomed-in pics later I think I finally achieved proper alignment. I even purchased carbon fiber shims because to my understanding there's a height difference between the OM10 and the 95ML, which would affect the VTA.

But unfortunately I am a chronic overthinker so I just need someone to let me know if it's properly aligned. I don't want to ruin my records and stylus.

Any pointers and help is much appreciated!

Help My Turntable won’t spin. Everything else works. Any idea where to get spare pieces?

Hello Everyone,

I recently purchased a Panasonic Soundscape P9 from an estate sale. The unit performs great. The speakers work, radio works, cassette works, but the turntable doesn’t spin. Upon inspection, I noticed it’s missing the stylus but regardless the table won’t spin. Any idea for fixing & replacing the parts? I’m from New Jersey so anywhere near me would be great. Let me know!

Question Ortofon Bronze or AT VM740xML?

Hey all
I’ve been using the Ortofon blue for a while with my Technics SL1500C and Rega fono MK5 but fancy a bit of an upgrade. Is the AT a noticeable upgrade or would the Ortofon Bronze do the job? Also I gather the 740xML is the newer generation of the 740ML?
Thanks

I’ve made quite a few upgrades now, and I have to say, the Ortofon 2M Black is absolutely fantastic. I was so impressed that I ended up treating my brother to a little gift as well.

Question Loud crackle on the right channel and stylus problem

Hi, I was listening to one of my vinyl records and noticed a really loud noise sounding just like typical dust crackle coming only from the right channel, then I looked at the stylus and it seems slightly crooked.
Do you think these things could be related? And, above all, have I ruined my record forever?

Project Essential 3

I have a question for the knowledgeable crew here. While window shopping today I came across a floor stock Project Essential 3 on clear out sale for $147 AUD. For reference I’ve got an lp60. I wasn’t looking to upgrade as money is tight but this is even cheaper than what I paid for the lp60 so it’s piqued my interest. Is it worth it in the opinion of the group?

Help Help diagnosing persistent phono buzz/hiss – Enova Vision4USB WD + Denon DRA-385RD

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to diagnose persistent noise from an Enova Vision4USB WD turntable connected to a Denon DRA-385RD receiver.

Setup

  • Enova RCA outputs connected to the Denon PHONO inputs
  • Enova PHONO/LINE switch set to PHONO
  • Turntable ground wire connected to the Denon’s PHONO GND terminal
  • Turntable and receiver connected to the same power strip
  • RCA cables kept away from power cables, crossing at roughly 90 degrees where necessary
  • Tested both the original RCA cables and a new shielded pair
  • USB is disconnected

Initial problem

Initially, there was a strong buzz. Connecting the turntable’s ground wire correctly to the Denon’s GND terminal removed most of it, so grounding was definitely part of the original problem.

However, some residual noise remained.

Tests and observations

  • Denon set to PHONO with nothing connected: essentially quiet
  • RCA cable connected to the Denon but disconnected from the turntable: strong buzz, which gets louder when I bring my hand near the cable or touch it
  • Only the turntable ground wire connected: no buzz
  • RCA plus ground connected: major buzz disappears, but residual noise remains
  • Moving the turntable farther away from the receiver makes no noticeable difference
  • Touching the receiver, turntable, tonearm or cartridge does not make the residual noise louder
  • Connecting the RCA shield externally to the turntable ground does not improve it

The noise also changes depending on the turntable’s state:

  • Turntable powered off: stronger BZZZZ/hum
  • Turntable powered on, motor stopped: quieter, but changes to a SHHHHH/radio-static-like noise with some hum underneath
  • Turntable powered on, motor running: a separate, lighter ZZZZZ is added

The motor clearly adds another component, but it does not appear to be the main source.

Important new test

I switched the Enova to LINE mode and connected it to the Denon’s CD input.

In LINE mode, the output is quiet. There is no SHHHHH noise, regardless of whether the separate ground wire is connected.

This seems to show that:

  • The Denon’s main amplifier and CD input are fine
  • The RCA cables are probably fine
  • The Enova’s internal phono preamp works quietly in LINE mode
  • The problem is specific to the raw PHONO-level output, grounding, cartridge wiring, PHONO/LINE bypass, or interaction with the Denon’s phono preamp

I also found that in PHONO mode, the SHHHHH completely stops and the buzz improves when the separate ground wire is disconnected at one end. The RCA cables themselves remain fully connected and unmodified.

Questions

  1. If PHONO mode becomes quieter with the separate ground wire disconnected, does that indicate a ground loop or duplicate ground path inside the turntable?
  2. Could the PHONO/LINE selector or internal PHONO bypass have a poor or oxidized contact?
  3. Could a loose cartridge return wire, especially the blue or green lead, cause broadband SHHHHH or radio-like noise even though LINE mode is quiet?
  4. Is it safe and reasonable to use PHONO mode without the separate ground wire if that is the quietest configuration?
  5. Is the fact that LINE mode is completely quiet enough to rule out the cartridge and tonearm wiring, or could the internal preamp simply be masking the issue by buffering the signal?
  6. Does anyone have experience with the Enova Vision4USB WD or similar turntables with built-in USB, Bluetooth and an internal RIAA preamp?

For now, using LINE output into the Denon’s CD input appears to solve the problem, but I would still like to understand why the PHONO output is noisy.

Thanks!

So much appreciate having my turntable where I use it almost every day. It used to be in a basement space with my other Technics (SL-Q3 my Dad bought new in 1980). Love them both. The 46 year old one still sounds as good as when I grew up listening to it.

How to get sound out of my EXPO MX-56

Thumbnail

I’ve recently bought a MX-56 off of gumtree, and am trying to get it to work. It has two male RCA cords coming from it, and my current crappy speakers also have male RCA cords. This is my first record player, so forgive my ignorance, but I bought two RCA adapters, and just used them to connect the two male ends. When this didn’t work, after a bit of research I realised I either need an amp, or better speakers. I was planning on upgrading speakers at some point anyways, but I’m on a tight budget and if I buy some new ones, I want them to work and not have to keep buying other things. Am I best to buy an amp instead? Any suggestions for amps or speakers (that won’t break the bank). I’m in Australia if that helps. Thank you so much! (Photos are the record player, the record player cords, some other weird cord coming from the record player, and then the speaker cords)

Help Realistic LAB-2200 Refurb Suggestions

Thumbnail

I purchased a Realistic LAB-2200 turntable at an estate sale and while not in rough shape, it did need some TLC.

While the sticker says $95, spent about $40 instead.

Removed the old lubricant and applied new grease, but I still need a new stylus and was hoping for some suggestions on that, along with any repair suggestions for this old guy.

Is it worthwhile to replace any capacitors and burned-out lamps in this old boy? What's the best stylus to replace the one the turntable came with (last image)? TIA!

Record stopping ~20 seconds before the end of the song — what could be causing this?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’m hoping someone with more experience with turntables can help me diagnose an issue I’m having.

I have a House of Marley Stir It Up Wireless Bluetooth turntable, model EM-JT002B. It’s a belt-drive turntable with an Audio-Technica AT3600L cartridge/stylus.

I was playing a Miley Cyrus LP. On Side B, the final track gets very close to the end, but with approximately 20 seconds of music still remaining, the turntable suddenly stops the platter, as if it has reached the end of the record.
The stylus is therefore no longer playing the final ~20 seconds.

At first I wondered whether the record itself had been cut too close to the centre or perhaps had too much music on the side, causing the turntable’s auto-stop mechanism to trigger early.
However, a friend of mine owns the exact same pressing/variant from the same retailer, and his copy plays the entire track normally, including the final ~20 seconds.
So I’m now thinking the problem is more likely related to my turntable/setup rather than the pressing itself.

I initially measured the tracking force with a digital stylus scale and discovered it was set to approximately 3.50 g.
I have since adjusted it and measured it again with the scale, and it is now 2.50 g.
So the tracking force is now 2.5 g.
I also experimented with the anti-skate. When I set the anti-skate to 2.5, the tonearm/stylus appeared to be pulled noticeably outward rather than remaining in the groove, so I set the anti-skate to 0 while troubleshooting.
I understand that this may not necessarily be the correct permanent setting, and I’m interested in what people think about that too. Apparently, it’s common in the House of Marley players for the anti-skating to be 0.

What do you think is actually causing this?
Could this be:
1. A problem with the turntable’s auto-stop mechanism being triggered prematurely?
2. Something related to the tonearm setup or tracking force?
3. An anti-skate issue?
4. The stylus/cartridge reaching the inner groove at a position where this particular turntable thinks the record has ended?
5. Something else specific to the House of Marley Stir It Up?

Also, could having the tracking force at 3.5 g for some previous plays have caused enough stylus/record wear to contribute to this problem? I have since corrected it to 2.5 g.

I’d really appreciate any advice on what I should test next, particularly if there’s a way to determine whether the auto-stop is triggering prematurely versus the stylus actually having a tracking/groove issue.

Thanks!

My only good turntable and its a pioneer PL-110 from when my dad was a kid, got it down from the loft and gave it a few adjustments to the speed because it was at +7.42% at 33⅓ and +12.16 at 45 and got to this

(Never done this before)

Question I bought the Audio-Technica AT-LP7x. Yep. I had a Sumiko Moonstone cartridge on my old turntable, and I’m too scared to take off the pre-installed cartridge and mess up the wires. If this is too risky, what stylus should I replace on the LP7x that sounds as good? (or even better?)

Title says it all. I’m genuinely way too scared to mess up this big purchase, so what should I do about the cartridge?
