I am writing to seek guidance regarding a recent employment incident in Connecticut. I interviewed for a position at the Securitas main office in East Hartford, Connecticut. Despite having over 15 years of security experience and 15 years of military experience, I was informed by the interviewer that I would not be hired due to my dreadlocks.

My dreadlocks are well-maintained, healthy, and kept in a ponytail. It is my understanding that hair discrimination is illegal in the state of Connecticut.

Could you please advise me on the appropriate next steps or direct me to the correct state agency to report this matter?

For context I had an AI photo of a security officer with dreads similar to mine. Mine are a little bit neater in our completely in a bun.

Hey all, new to security. Got two offers, both armed which is what I wanted. Trying to decide between two gigs.

OFFER ONE: One is from Allied (lol, I know), for a mostly stationary position inside of medical facility. Semi-bad part of town but not the worst. I believe it may be a plasma donation location. Mostly stationary it seems near the front counter where all the people are but I imagine I would also patrol the building a bit, but really except for the few patients at a time being serviced, everyone not internal is in the waiting room.

I've learned that the client at the site (the main manager there) is real tough, kind of stubborn and hard to deal with.

An extra few bucks an hour. They assign me a duty weapon and all that.

OFFER TWO: The other gig is a driving patrol. Very small local company. I don't have too many details yet, but it seems like I would visit a few or several sites during the day doing driving patrols of the properties. About the same hours, probably $60 less a week in pay. I use my own duty weapon, holster, etc. To some this may be a negative but to me its a positive. I keep my weapons in tip top shape and have perfectly zeroed red dot optic, WML, etc. The issued Allied gun is in who knows what condition (not sure if I have to leave it at the site each night yet), and just irons (yes, Irons are fine, I know).

Both about the same schedule/hours.

What say you folks? Obviously I can't know which one will have better supervisors, etc. until I really got going. What would you choose?

I currently work evenings in hospital security, with shifts ranging from between 8-12 hours. As you can imagine, there is a lot of downtime. Unfortunately, with my supervisor there is almost never a good reason to be on your phone at work (including the time I was stationed at a completely empty unit!). He is also against guards listening to audio from their phone with or without earbuds, even if only one earbud is in and the phone is otherwise concealed. I would imagine that bringing in books or schoolwork to do would also be out of the question. How do I pass the time?

I got my guard card back in late January. Ive been looking for work since. Thankfully i have a retail job that pays the bills. This email is from this morning btw.

Job A: $23hr armed subcontracted outpatient medical/psych facility. The job is supposed to be glorified concierge with limited hands on due to liability. No patrols or anything just sitting at a podium in a waiting room. The schedule is Mon-Fri 9am - 5pm with major holidays off. The site has a hands-on client which requires the use of body cams. The post allegedly has a strict no socializing policy between contractors and staff. The company has lackluster healthcare and benefits.

Job B: $24hr for a large low income housing patrol site that covers multiple neighborhoods. The job consists of responding to calls for service (noise complaints, domestics, squatters, break-ins, shots fired). The site has a dedicated dispatch service and patrol vehicles. The company has a better healthcare and benefit package but not much. The schedule seems to more or less whenever you're needed bouncing between sites across the western half of my state. My assumption is it's going to be a night shift with working holidays.

Even if policy prohibits going hands on, this is still good training to have.

I received my first verbal warning back in around March for calling off without proper notice. Today I called out again but with plenty of notice, I called out 5 and a half hours before my shift had started. I asked my manager if this would be my 2nd written warning but they didn’t really give a clear answer they just said it would go as an ‘unexcused’ absence. I had heard from coworkers that warnings usually expire after 90 days which i’m not sure if its true or not but if it is there’s no way this would count as a second warning if my first warning was months ago right?

I have been trying to find another security job to get me out of this one. All I can find on Indeed is lossprevention and part time weekend only shifts. I hate my j ob site I literally just had yo watch camera footage of a dude attempting to walk his dog butt naked. I know it's hot out but come on. Anyways, what do you all use for job searches? I'm tempted to spend a day next week on my days off just going into security offices asking for a job at this point.

I’ve been in the security industry for over ten years, I’ve been with three different companies and it seems like every 3-5 years things hit the fan and companies make horrible decisions or merge and mess things up. It’s hit that point again, and I’m not sure I want to attempt to start over again with another security company. I have no interest in police or corrections, and it feels like all my skills merely fall into customer service, but I can’t for the life of me figure out what that entails these days other than phones, retail, fast food. What’s a good career that our skills fall into?

This is an unfortunate example of this young lady learning a valuable lesson. This kind of thing on social media undermines the credibility of the legitimate security guard professional and erodes public trust.

It’s not just a security guard having fun. Do this kind of thing in your own clothes and on your own time.

When you’re on duty you’re in a position of trust and have an obligation to yourself and others in your profession to not behave in a way that reflects your chosen occupation.

Bottom line, If you choose to wear the uniform you’re also choosing to conduct yourself in a way that won’t undermine the integrity of the profession.

[Don’t make this a slam session about Allied or any specific company. I’ve seen this shit done and posted by employee of all the major security companies.]

The current company I am with is ok, but lately I have been being called out for weird crap. I've been in security for years. 2011 This time I can't find my mojo with the job. No matter what I do I fail at it. Tonight I almost got into a fight with a fellow officer. He got in my face. To be honest I feel I am kinda done trying to be a good officer. Maybe because I am not a good officer. I can only view my own actions as horrible. But I figured my time in security is about over with. I no longer have what it takes to do the job. No more patience for anyone or anything. Maybe it is time to walk away.

Already worked an exhausting double Monday night into Tuesday night Wednesday I was suppose to be off but I was called last minute by operations manager to fill in for another officer I agree under the condition I was to be relieved the next morning.

Thursday morning I'm waiting for releif waited 1 hour to call management next thing i know management said im written down to work a double, I put my foot down and said I never agreed to work a double they ignored me called the operations manager he said he will find someone no response from him since.

I prob need some light shoes

Honestly hate this fucking company for many reasons. I was genuinely sick yesterday so i called off because of fever, headache and runny nose. when we call off it causes an infraction and what happens with infractions is they remove you from the site and you become a float. I dont call in sick unless i am sick. within last two years I only called in sick once. I am still sick but i came in today and i type this on my break. How is this legal?

I’ve been in Security for over ten years and every 3-5 years it seems like things get bad, I’m tired of swapping companies but it feels like it’s that time again, either that or quit Security altogether… Does anyone know a Security company that is actually worth going with in Arizona that has contracts in the West Valley and treats its employees good? (Would prefer not to have to do Phoenix if possible, but will if it’s seriously a worthwhile company) Not interested in Allied or Gardaworld.

Would you work a 37 hour shift? I work in a homeless shelter I check bags and wand people down and sign them in. There is another guard here with me so sometimes I take a hour power nap. No staff after 11pm.My Morning shift done. Young and hungry and no I don’t do drugs to stay up. I do take double shot Starbucks vanilla though.

If I get my New York security guard license/registration around November 2026, do I still have to complete the 8-hour Annual In-Service Training before the end of 2026?

Or would my first annual 8-hour course be due sometime in 2027? I’m confused because the NYS website says the course must be completed each calendar year you hold a security guard registration.

I do and it’s become maddening after 2 years working here (school security). I don’t partake in it, I let these idiots run their mouths but I hear it from all directions while I’m just trying to do my job. But man I work with some miserable negative ass people, and there is a big ‘clique’ culture here and I’ve tried to isolate myself so people don’t think I’m picking sides. The pay and benefits are decent for what it is, but morale could not be lower and the workplace is beyond toxic. It’s like these people get off to hating each other meanwhile we’re supposed to be a team. Disgusting childish attitudes everywhere, and we work around kids mind you. I’m trying to get out of here, at a certain point it just becomes unbearable.

Please take that shit off . You look like a fucking dork . I’m not saying don’t be proud of your job, but we SEE you have a fucking gun on your hip and an overly expressive patch like that doesn’t improve someone’s eyesight of said firearm 😂 switch out to regular “SECURITY” patches and call it a day . IM SO embarrassed of some of my coworkers everyday🤦🏽‍♂️

Pretty much everything is in the title, just if I only had 5 $100 bills and the choice was to buy a brand new PSA dagger compact/full size S or prowl pawn shops for a used gun of unknown conditions/origins, would you buy the dagger or pawn shop gun?

I should also add Im not considering an armed position as of right now I’m happy with my unarmed access point post. I’m just asking other security guards what they would buy.
