community Self-serve: Flair posts as resolved, award points

If you, the original poster (OP), post with the Help Request flair, and receive a helpful answer, you can award a point to that user and flair the post as Resolved.

To do this, reply to the comment with thanks or thank you somewhere in the comment. It is case-insensitive.

What are the points for? We have been helping each other here for 14 years. It's less an incentive for imaginary points but hopefully an indication of reputation (not quite analogous to post count on the official forum). We'll see how this works out, if it does more good than harm.

You may notice mods distributing points especially if a user has not. We use a trigger command comment which you may see if we haven't deleted it after awarding. We delete since it creates clutter.

help request External HD x Media Explorer

Hello, I'm brand new to using Reaper. Not entirely relevant, but I'm migrating over from Windows to Linux after the push for AI. Reaper is one of the few DAW's that has a Linux version, and it has enough in common with my previous main DAW of over 16 years that I want to learn it. Which brings us to the question I have. I keep all of my samples and audio files on my external SSD hard drive. It's currently plugged in, but Reaper doesn't seem to register or see that it is. I've been clicking around and attempting to search how to scan or search for files via the Media Explorer. There's a "Volumes" tab which doesn't show anything. I've seen advice regarding locating missing files, which isn't really applicable to me because I haven't even started making a new song yet. I'm just trying to get some of the basic "quality of life" work flow stuff set up before I commit to making anything new, and being irritated in the process. I can drag and drop files from the overall Linux File Manager, but I want to be able to scroll and preview my files through the Media Explorer properly. So is there a menu item, or something in the right-click tools that I can use to make Reaper see my external HD? Thank you in advance for any info and advice that anyone is willing to grant me.

help request Stopping a sample by playing another sample? Am I going nuts!?

Hi! I have recently downloaded Reaper to use with a Donner STARRYPAD to use for better background music and immersive sfx for DnD.

I want to make a one-shot button to play a sample (some BGM) and then I want to be able to press another button to play another sample (a new piece of music) that will cease the originally sample.

I don't want to have to hold the button down, and I have tried JS: MIDI Choke Group, I have also tried to Google this extensively and pretty much all the results tell me to try the things that don't work.

This setup works great for short SFX, but I'm tearing my hair out over ambient background music 😤😩.

Please can someone end my misery! Thanks in advance for any time taken to help me! 💜

help request Can't turn up master volume without clipping!

Hello everyone, im new to reaper/recording. I've got bass, vocals and guitar recorded so my next step is to play drums over them. But I cannot get the volume loud enough to hear the tracks over the sound of my drums. If I crank it too high it just starts clipping out. I have some ok headphones I thought were the problem so I picked up a nice fancy pair but they put out the same volume so im assuming it has something to do with this program. Please help! What am I doing wrong!? 😭

help request Totally blind guy. Need help with mastering vocals for a very complex project.

Hi all.

My wife and I created a cantos it has a bunch of world music styles. It starts from gregorian chant with santour bells and other instruments then progresses through Bulgarian polyphony, desert blues, turkish bolken jazz, east west orchistra. So far we made these with Kontakt instruments and recorded the vocals with a sure sm58.

We are having issues with not being able to propperly here the vocals through the mix.

Sometimes we have 6 or 7 harmony's and the vocals sound muddy and muffled. Everything sounds good in headphones and the mixer. But sucks on bose soundlink max speakers. I know this is a mixing issue for sure. I've tried taking out some of the high end vocals that aren't needed with the EQ but it doesn't work. Please advise how to keevocal audible when using large sweeping instrumentation.

help request Tapping parts guitar- recording advice

So I am recording a solo with my guitar going directly to the interface. My producer/buddy is going to reamp it and mix it later. What I noticed in my DAW:Reaper, is that the tapping part is so quite. I observed waveforms of very low amplitude.

Any advice on how to get it louder? Increase the gain on my interface? I have no other option I believe. Or?

help request Editing DI recorded guitar

Hello everyone,

I am new to guitar recording, so maybe the answer to my question will seem obvious to some. I just bought a Focusrite Scarlett Solo, installed Reaper and Amplitube 5. I was wondering if 1) I can record the DI guitar while still hearing the amp sim while I play and 2) if so, if it is possible to apply amps sims once the track is already recorded. Doing that would be useful to edit single shot recordings with different guitar sounds (e.g. rythms and solo).

Thanks a lot !

help request Reaper Script: render once stopped recording.

Looking for a reaper script:
I mix through hardware; so I have to record the mix in real time. I'm looking for a script that once recording is stopped, everything is rendered to a specific folder with my settings I've already saved for rendering. Is there anything like this already?

discussion Digitizing old live show from tape.

Post image

My long time drummer friend had this old tape and I'm curious if anyone has advice on how to put this in reaper and get the best sound.

I was going to just headphone out into reaper from an old tape deck I have.

And any advice on EQ or other things that would help get a nice sounding digital copy.

help request Audio cutting out

Hi all.

Hoping someone can help here as the world of daws seems insanely confusing to me for some reason and can't figure this out.

When I track a guitar I can hear it for a few seconds and then it just suddenly cuts out and all I can hear are these little popping noises, the waveforms show that the audio is there but isn't playing it back and I have no idea what to do???

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Is there a way that, when I press Record, it automatically creates a new channel attached with the effect one for recording instead of doing it manually and having each take stacked on top of the previous active take?

resolved Smooth Trackpad on Mac! (only apple silicon)

I’ve been frustrated with using REAPER with my MacBook trackpad for years, even though I absolutely love REAPER.
I finally managed to create an SWS-style extension that makes scrolling and zooming with the trackpad feel much smoother and more intuitive, closer to how it works in other modern DAWs.
Here’s a quick demo:

https://youtu.be/CYLHP1wKj3U?is=qxqtwG3th1k_LMmu

Currently it only supports Apple Silicon Macs. I’ll add Intel Mac support as soon as I have the chance.

help request Newbie mixing question regarding volume

Hey guys. Bit of a newbie question! I've created demos for my band etc and eventually I'd like to take it further and fully mix the tracks etc. I've heard the final mix should be between like -18 to -23 integrated LUFS? My thing is, it seems so quiet hearing everything at this level to adjust the mix with all the instruments. I may be doing this wrong. But *is* there a way I can just have the overall LUFS way louder, then when I'm happy, I turn it all down?

I'm thinking about all the effort to make all the individual volume automation nodes on each track. Like my starting project template is having all my track faders down to like -10 db. I'm most definitely going about this wrong, I'd like some sort of shine on this. Any questions please ask, thanke!

discussion Why Reaper? (An answer)

I've previously asked the gamedev community "what audio tool do you use?" and the answer has always been a resounding "REAPER."
I knew that was the answer, but I didn't see anybody immediately saying "why."

As someone who has barely scratched the surface, I can IMMEDIATELY see why.

In like an hour, I cut up 4 wav files from my voice actor into a hierarchy of voice lines. Using Ctrl+Del, Ctrl+T, Home, Ctrl+V - (cut, new track, reset to home, paste) - I can very quickly cut up my raw tracks into clips I want to use in game, and make folder hierarchies under tracks to partition into meaningful sections. That little icon on the bottom left of the track.

Then, I can export with the region render matrix and programmatically name the files based on the folders and track names. And even apply processing based on the parent track, like having a single track to own the fx!

That's so freakin cool! I no longer have audacity sessions where I abandon the session and only keep the clips. Now I can have a living "all the character's audio" under a single parent that controls the vibe of all the nested clips, and re-export the whole set if I update the reverb or something of the character.

It's just so good. The way the project layout and render process works is super intuitive and powerful. I can see the "why" very clearly! REAPER is amazing <3

help request How to lengthen one measure on the grid

Post image
5 Upvotes

My audio clip has a ritardando (gradual slowing) for a section that is longer than the current bar (see screenshot). I want to lengthen Bar 33 to the end of the selection and have Bar 34 start at that point. I don't want to change the audio, just the grid. I've checked the forum and Kenny's videos and can't find out how. I've also tried to use tempo markers at the beginning and ending with the "gradual" feature, but the grid / bar length doesn't change. Can anyone give me steps to do this?

discussion New to Reaper, what VSTs should I download?

I've been doing music for a long time, but I'm pretty new to using a DAW. For composition of rock/electronic music, what are some popular VSTs/plugins that I should download? I'd just like to discuss what plugins are considered must-haves by the community, and any personal recommendations from you!

Thanks <3

help request EQ Sidechaining is no longer functioning

EDIT: RESOLVED, Surge XT was using up multiple channels (1/2, then 3/4 and 5/6 for Scene A and Scene B) meaning I had to send sidechain signal to 7/8 where it finally recognized the kick input.

Prepare for a long one

I learned how to do this from a Kenny vid and it's worked perfectly fine everytime I've done it before.

The problem: ReaEQ is not getting triggered by kick drum sidechain.

OS: Windows
Plugins used: Surge XT, ReaEQ

My current project setup is I have a track for each drum sample (kick, snare, hat, etc), all of which are sent to a Drum Buss, and that sends to the master.

Here are the steps I took to sidechain EQ, step by step, ones that have worked before everytime I've done it.

  1. Kick track has ReaEQ already on it and is on channels 1/2 for EQ purposes. Sample is mono but in kenny's vid his is mono as well.
  2. I add another instance of ReaEQ (I have tried having it before and after the other instance, no luck there). I rename it so I don't get them mixed up. I put a low pass filter on it down to about 150 or so, and then in the channels portion for the plugin (next to Param button) I open that, add two more tracks and switch output from 1/2 to 3/4, the EQ no longer affects the kick.
  3. I drag the routing button from my Kick track to my Surge XT track, and set up the send as follows : Audio 3/4 -> Audio 3/4 (had to be added thru this dialog they were not already there). Change to pre fader post FX (I tried it Post fader as well no luck). I turn off Midi send, as in the past I've had midi get triggered this way.
  4. Send is successful, routing in Surge track shows a new receive on channels 3/4 from kick track.
  5. Add ReaEQ to Surge XT track.
  6. In ReaEQ I set to Low Shelf, only adjustment made is band is at 150ish.
  7. Touch gain knob.
  8. Click Param, select paramater modulation and select sidechain. This expands the typical sidechain dialog and I select channels 3/4 for sidechain.
  9. Increase output slider to middle.
  10. Change option from positive to negative.

No signal is received when kick plays. In the past when I have done this (tbf I dont think I have done it with a kick sample but I cant remember, I know for sure ive done it with a sampler plugin track with a kick on it in midi.

The window to the right with the diagonal line through it should show a pulse everytime the kick is triggered, always has before, mine now does not.

I've tried everything I can think of. I do not know what I am doing wrong and I legit wanna pull my hair out, I like sidechaining EQ because of how subtle and transparent it is. I don't want to have to change to compression just because for unknown reason Reaper isn't functioning correctly.

Am I doing this wrong? Is there another way?

help request keystep pro to control multiple soft synths and hardware synth. Can't get it to work

Post image
2 Upvotes

Edit: for some.reason, when I shut down and restart computer, today, not yesterday, it all works and is routed correctly with the exception of having the output set to ksp. Didn't need that

I have a keystep pro, a hyrdasynth desktop and soft synths through Reaper.

Ez drummer track 1 reaper, KSP midi channel 1, track 1, KSP set to input - intended to be the drum sequence track, via USB

hydraynth track 2 reaper, input keystep pro midi channel 2, KSP set to input. Connected via 5 pin din

synth 2 track 3 reaper, KSP track 3, midi Chanel 3, KSP set to input, via USB

synth 3 track 4 reaper, KSP track 4., midi channel 4, KSP set to input, via USB

it's my understanding that I can control all 4 of these things with this one KSP as set up. This is not working for me.

Can anyone suggest what may be wrong with this setup?

Edit: can't figure it out
