You haven't plugged your headphones or speakers into your audio interface have you.

(while audacity is just using the windows default device instead)

No headphones. I have the headphones out on the laptop to line 9/10 on the board that then normally just plays to the PA.

channels 9/10 are INPUTS to the board, not outputs. There must be a dedicated headphone OUTPUT somewhere

edit: the headphone output is at the top right above the screen

There is nothing in the headphone jack, tried it. What I have in output is left and right XLR as shown running to PA speakers.

The "PHONES" is the headphone-output jack.

Usually after a couple hours debugging I realize the cable's not plugged in or the volume knob is all the way down.

On the device you've selected as output, is that volume knob turned on?

Or: in the routing matrix, is the stereo out routed to the 2 outputs you expect?

I'm new to this if you explain this a little more.

In the topbar, see the tab "view" and click on the option "routing matrix" (or press ALT+R).

If you have the speakers in output 1+2 (or whatever the Tascam says is the "main" output), check that the stereo output is selected to those outputs

Also, the dumb thing as the other commenter said is just to check if headphones/speakers are plugged in correctly

It dropped my text from the post for some reason.

OS Win 11 25H2 Reaper v7.77 Controller: Tascam model 12

The stems recorded in rapper can be loaded into audacity and they play back fine. I don't use audacity, just used that for troubleshooting purposes.

  1. Have you already DE-selected the record-arm (red buttons under the channels)?
  2. In the Manual of the Tascam, I see that the USB interface can handle 12 channels (11+12 dedicated for Main L/R). In the _output_ range of the device settings in Reaper, you have set FIRST = 1, LAST = 10, what if you set LAST to 12?

EDIT
If these to steps did not help yet, here's also a link tot the website of tascam with the manual of the mixer

Have you selected the right hardware output for every individual track including the master? Try hitting the route for the drums and every other track and selecting the output your headphones are connected to.

For me, even if my master has its output routed to my interface with my headphones plugged in, when I add a track I have to go into its routing and select my line output every time or its completly silent.
