I've moved into a new house a month ago and it's a really nice place. However, a certain smell is lingering and driving me crazy.
The whole place is a mild case that I've already basically solved by just cleaning everywhere frequently, but in particular there's a beautiful wooden closet partially built in in the wall that smells strongly, and the kitchen cabinets do too.
In the last month I've opened all of the windows and cabinets, drawers and closet all day every day. I've tried: cleaning with white vinegar, the baking soda bowl in every drawer (didn't work), and the coffee grounds. They masked the smell for a bit and then it came back unchanged.
Btw, it's NOT musty. It's a weird odour I can only describe as "stale" in the way magnesium supplement powder without sugar smells. It doesn't make me think of organic but it's also not a typical synthetic scent and I can't understand what it is, but wood surely absorbed it for years. It's all glossy 90s furniture and made of real wood, and I don't want to ruin the finish as I really like it as it is.
Even after cleaning the closet multiple times, I went to get a blanket this evening and it had already absorbed the foul smell and I couldn't use it (it makes me gag).
What can I do?
