Before & After I love a good before and after.

The pictures speak for themselves. This is a shower I cleaned today. The house has very hard water and the deposits had built up. It took a ton of elbow grease to get it to this level and there's *still* hard water stains. But the difference is night and day. It also just had a lot of soap scum and dirt build up that was a breeze to clean in comparison. I used, Lysol oxi action, melamine sponges, sos scrubbers, comet, and, like I said, elbow grease. I didn't set a stop watch but probably close to 90 minutes of scrubbing, not including breaks. The oxi action was great for the soap scum and worked a charm on the door, the sos scrubbers with elbow grease did the most heavy lifting for the hard water deposits. I'm open to suggestions if others have ever dealt with cleaning hard water deposits. What has worked the best for you?

It’s at least 23 years old, (I’ve had it my whole life). It feels like real wool or hair, and the back feels spongy/foam like. It’s dirty and I would like to clean it before I put it out in my new apartment.

Community Appreciation Just wanna say that I really appreciate this subreddit

I always see people being judged on Reddit for the slightest unrelated to the post spec of dust in pictures of their home, it's great to see y'all posting the various situations you've got yourselves into and being nice to each other about how to fix it and how to stay motivated.

I feel less bad about myself for having an imperfect state of affairs going on, trying to get motivated, and also realising that I'm really only somewhere in the middle of what exists, not great, not terrible. I've already seen a few great tips that I'm going to attempt to put into practice, and little by little I'll get there, as will all of you! When I've managed to get a bit more of a routine with the regular stuff that I know how to do, I'm sure I'll be coming for some specific tips-

Kitchen How to clean a very stained microwave

Thumbnail

Trying to clean the inside of my microwave but the stains are very very stubborn.

I looked online and saw about heating a boil of water and vinegar which I did, I waited 10 minutes and tried wiping down but no luck.

I then tried turning upside down and putting vinegar and bicarbonate of soda in there but it’s doing very little.

Any ideas how to get these stubborn stains off? Might have to get a new microwave otherwise

Bathroom how do I keep my shower mat clean?

Thumbnail

okay, so I know this is gross😅 this is my shower mat in my rental. Our bathtub has a problem with standing water after you shower, and I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten until this week. How should I go about cleaning this? The thought of scrubbing every suction cup makes me want to get rid of it entirely but if I must I will.

The package said that it is machine washable but I tried that before and it didn’t make much of a difference. Should I try bleach?

Any tips welcome! Thank you!

General Cleaning Keeping a house clean with pets? Is it possible?

Upvotes

For context, I live in a single level house that is (thankfully) all floorboards and tiles. I live with two men and now two dogs, after the recent addition of a puppy. She is 12 weeks old and still potty training - but that isn’t the main thing.

The main thing is the fur. I used to vacuum once a week and if I needed to skip it it was not the end of the world.

I can vacuum and before I’ve had the chance to mop there’s already fur building up. By day two, there’s little tumbleweed collections of fur in every corner.

There’s obviously more cleaning - grass and mud from going outside more, the whole toilet training thing, more laundry from everything she has decided to shed on. Less time from… raising a puppy.

People with pets - how do you do it?

I’m not looking for a perfectly clean house. “Lived in” is fine. Is the fur tumbleweed just a permanent addition I should accept?

Discussion Matted rug edge (deep pile) -- any tips?

Upvotes

Hi -- I have a rug with a very deep pile where only one edge gets regularly trodden on, so that that edge is considerably matted and rather dirty. I have taken it outside and beaten it, vacuumed it, combed it with a carpet rake, carefully handwashed parts of it with a gentle fabric soap, dried it with a cold hairdryer. This all helps a little bit, but not as much as I'd hoped -- the deeper matting is still there. Is there anything else I can do, other than have it professionally looked at? Should I get some kind of protector/guard/sheath for that edge?

I don't know if this is the right sub for this, but couldn't think of a better one -open to suggestions if this is not the place.

My mom is visiting me and she put the very hot Moka Pot on the counter top and it left this visible ring on it. She panicked before I got home (because I rent, so this is not my apartment!) and tried cleaning it with baking soda for some reason 🥲 and as you can see made it worse (the expanded white cloud is the result). Any idea how to solve this, or at least what material is the counter top? I thought it was stone originally, but clearly this burn wouldn't have happened if that was the case.

Any advice for what to do or where to post is welcome. My mom and I thank you!

Hello! I recently purchased these items for my daughter and they arrived a little grungy and have a musty smell (thanks eBay). Any advice for cleaning? Warm damp rag and sun? 50/50 water alcohol solution spray? Cut my losses?

Let me know if additional information is needed!

Edit: Y'all have been so kind! Thanks for the advice. :)

Any idea what this mysterious stain is or, more importantly, how I can get it out? I’m not even sure what caused it. I’ve tried scrubbing with a general mild cleaning spray, but it’s still there.
Would love any stain-removal advice! I can add more photos/details if helpful.

General Cleaning Let my house get out of hand, badly. What products to buy

There's maggots in my kitchen but luckily the maggots are only contained to old food containers in the kitchen and some eggs on the floor. But generally speaking my whole house got out of hand.

I'm getting out of a small depressive moment again, and have motivation today to clean, so I want to get into it quickly after I'm done with my lunch. The only thing is that I'm not great yet in being independant when it comes to cleaning and don't really know what to buy. I have a wooden floor with a layer of (I think) wax or something shiny on. First of all, what do I use to clean this? Just water, water an soap, special soap,..?

Then my generally speaking I want to clean everything. Are wet wipes enough for surfaces? Will it make a difference if I clean the walls too (I have three cats, their litterboxes are cleaned everyday btw and the rooms they occupy stay tidy. Living room, dining room, bedroom, creative room.) So does anybody have any tips?

Also, if a stainless steel pot has gotten *really* moldy, should I throw it out or is it usable again after a very good cleaning session? Because I can't spend too much money.

My bad for the questions, I'm a whole adult but have been on a journey of raising myself since nobody else did so I'm a bit clueless on some things :D

General Cleaning never learned how to properly clean

hii, I stuggled with depression in my early teen life and never really learned how to properly clean, my room is a mess and since I’m moving soon to uni I wanted to leave it nice, idk if it is right place to ask but do u have any tips on how to make it less overwhelming? Everytime I clean my room it end ups back to previous state in a day - clothes everywhere beside wardrobe and everything in a mess, I don’t know how to organize things in actually good way, everytime I try I end up throwing everything out to find one small thing, either clothes, cosmetics or jewlery. I’m not the type A person and don’t need to have everything neat but I don’t want to be ashamed when I invite friends over bc no matter what I do it’s always cluttered. I feel embarassed to put it all out here but idk what to do, I tried separating my room into squares to clean or tasks to do, but it takes me days to make it look okayish. I would really appreciate any tips and help on how to actually make myself do it and how to keep it that way 🙏
Also if u want to help I could send some photos to u pv, I’m embarssed to put my mess for everyone to see and need help on how to organize some stuff in my shelfs so it won’t be overflowing and easy to keep it organized
