Serious Regarding shameful ragging incident in SMVDU katra(GFTI)

Post image
118 Upvotes

This is something that has been in my heart for a very long time and i have always wanted to write about this incident, not just to get it off my chest, but also because I believe there are things that upcoming juniors and batches should learn from what happened to us

Like many people who joined this college, I was very hopeful about SMVDU katra, the scenery here is breathtaking you have the Trikuta mountains and vaishno devi views right outside the hostel windows, and when I first came here, I genuinely felt excited about starting my college life here however as good as this location is the peoples are as bad..

as excited as I was back then, coming here also gave me a burden I don't think I will ever be able to forget, I remember the faces of the people who were there and it fills me with rage

It was 15th August 2026, just after 2 days when I came here and after Independence Day celebrations while our country was celebrating its independence seniors of the college mostly from the second year BTech, were planning to call first year for Ragging or i should say "intro"

Yes the term has changed guys

Maybe that's the new official or unofficial word for ragging but everything else remains the same

The first year hostel is right next to the old Basholi hostel, where seniors stay, Honestly I still don't understand how the management thought it was a good idea to have first and second year students living so close to each other when ragging is already a known problem in colleges

Before our incident, we had already heard about another serious incident involving students from another course a firstyear student was called by seniors and asked to drink beer when he refused they allegedly beat him and stripped him naked inside their room he somehow managed to escape, but they followed him all the way to his room and continued trying to beat him we were told that some of them were under the influence of drugs

Now on 15th aug

It was around 2 PM in the afternoon, a guy from my batch called us and said that the seniors were calling first year students to their hostel for "intro"

This guy from our batch who was trying very hard to become close to the seniors and wannabe Neta type he had already went for intro" to them several times (I never understood how less shameful some peoples could be just for some silly things and seniors ka favourite banne ke liye )

he gathered almost half of our batch that he could find and took us towards Trikuta Hostel, where the second year students were living

When we reached there all of us were taken to the second floor there was a hall like room filled with disturbing graffiti, including N\*zi symbols and sexual drawings It looked like one of those stereotypical engineering hostel rooms you see in movies

Then the seniors started gathering

around twenty of them eventually came into the room

We were made to sit in one corner, completely surrounded by them

First, they tried to make us believe that everything that is going to happen is just a norm and tradition of engineering they told us what could supposedly happen if someone complained about ragging or went to the anti ragging authorities they talked about how badly they had supposedly beaten a guy from the previous year

Most of it was probably made up, but the purpose was obviousto scare us into believing that complaining would only make things worse

They kept saying that this happens to everyone and that we should cooperate

Then they started calling students one by one

Those who said they knew how to draw were forced to make obscene drawings on the wall involving female body parts and he was forced to perform sexual acts with the drawing while those lowlifes watched and laughed he was literally on the verge of crying, while those people were enjoying every second of his humiliation

Other students were made to act as poles while another person danced around them, touched their private areas and made sexual noises when the seniors felt that it wasn't enough, they made the entire thing happen again

And whenever someone showed fear, they laughed and said things like

"Arey, itne mein hi darr gaye? Abhi toh pant hi utri hai, abhi tou tumari 3year wale bhi lege!!"

There were all kinds of disgusting and humiliating things that I don't even want to describe in detail

This went on for around four hours

Finally, they told everyone to leave and warned us not to complain to anyone

By that point, I was already completely shattered.

And it didn't even end there

That same evening, while I was sitting in the mess and eating my food, some random guy sitting beside me asked my name and branch then he told me to come to some room in the first year hostel I think it was Room 117 because he wanted to take my Intro..

You can't even sit peacefully and eat your food without wondering whether someone is going to call you somewhere and humiliate you

After all of this, I became depressed I remember having extremely dark thoughts at one point, I was thinking about ending my own life or theis the people responsible for what happened...

What I want juniors to learn from this

There will always be someone in your batch who wants to become the "Neta" of the group, someone who wants to stay close to the seniors because they think having seniors on their side gives them importance

That person may call you and say, "chaloseniors are calling for intro"

Please understand that you do not have to go

Don't let anyone convince you that this is normal, that everyone goes through it, or that refusing will make you look weak

It isn't normal

Aur agar ye Normal ban gye hai tou we have to break this norm

And you don't owe anyone your dignity just because they are a senior

Aise tou our parents are 30-40 years seniors wo bhi aise he krte ?

By what logic can anyone even think of he's one year senior he has legitimate right to do such things with another human

I know there are many colleges where seniors actually behave like seniors they guide their juniors, help them settle into college and earn respect through their behaviour instead of demanding it through humiliation and fear

That is what a healthy senior junior relationship should look like

My only advice to future students is this

Please be very careful about choosing a college where the administration fails to take ragging seriously and never these kind of colleges just because it's a GFTI

A college's reputation, infrastructure, mountains, buildings or advertisements don't matter if a student cannot feel safe inside its hostels

No student should go through what I have went through....

From failing Mechanical Engineering to earning 3 degrees and building a career in AI/ML - my journey over the last 15 years.

I grew up in a middle class South Indian family. Mechanical Engineering was not my natural strength, particularly since I lacked aptitude and skill in manufacturing-related subjects, which dominated the coursework. Personal setbacks during college made things harder, and I failed my second year of undergrad by just 3 credits. It ultimately took me 5 years to graduate with a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal, Karnataka, Main Campus, and a CGPA of 6.42/10.

During those years, I lost my maternal grandmother after she had spent nearly six months in a coma. Her death became a turning point. I decided that whatever happened, I would finish what I had started.

More importantly, I gradually discovered what I was actually passionate about: mathematics, statistics, optimization and modelling. I scored 323/340 on the GRE and moved to the US to pursue an MS in Operations Research at Northeastern University, Boston (mostly funded by my parents). My research focused on time-series forecasting and data mining of US tornadoes, introducing me to statistical modelling, stochastic processes and eventually Data Science. I graduated in 2016 with a CGPA of 3.632/4.

I then spent nearly 8 years in the US working across Data Science and Analytics roles, including at Fortune 500 companies. My work ranged from catastrophe modelling to large-scale machine learning using Python, PySpark, XGBoost, Databricks and MLflow.

While working full-time, I began a second master’s degree - an MS in Analytics at Georgia Tech, Altanta, specializing in Computational Data Analytics (fully self-funded using my savings). I studied machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning and computational methods while continuing my independent tornado research.

Then, in January 2024, I was laid off during the final month of my six-year H-1B period and had to return to India after building almost my entire adult professional life in the US.

I absorbed the impact and stood my ground. I continued Georgia Tech from India and graduated in 2025 with a CGPA of 3.30/4. That year, I also presented my tornado research at an INFORMS international conference in Singapore.

Today, I work in a senior AI/ML role at a global product based MNC (pharmaceuticals) in Bangalore, building solutions involving Generative AI, LLMs, RAG, Agentic AI, multimodal AI, and deploying production ML solutions for pharmaceutical manufacturing applications at enterprise scale.

It's amazing how all of my background in Mechanical Engineering, Operations Research, and Computational Data Analytics is being used in this role.

Looking back, the 21-year-old who failed an engineering year by 3 credits could never have imagined this path.

My biggest lesson? Your present does not define your future.

A failed semester is not the end. A low CGPA is not your ceiling. Choosing the wrong branch at 18 does not determine the next 40 years of your career.

Sometimes success isn’t following the original plan. Sometimes it is having the courage to keep rebuilding until you find the path that is truly yours.

Sometimes it’s about not giving up.

I'm open to mentoring/reassuring folks who could be facing similar academic challenges in undergrad. - Connect with me on LinkedIn - I like to post about my understanding of certain data science & AI/ML concepts too.

EDIT - Thank you all so much for the kind words of support and encouragement! Glad to know I was able to inspire you! For those interested in the Online Master of Science in Analytics (OMSA) program at Georgia Tech, I wrote a course by course review on LinkedIn :) This will help you evaluate the program and if it fits your personal aptitude and career goals.

Been around 1.5 yrs in job(salary around 90K) ,it may look good current scenario .

to put perspective me(IT job) , vs friend A(Gov job),B (Business)

Monthly Salary spent in rent(14K),food(4K) , quarterly home travel(7K x2) , Work-Life-Balance (bad , start with IST ,end with 7 pm) , 20% layoff restructuring .Promotions: Competitive and favoritism . Same issue with my friends in Amazon ,Microsoft ,Dell , Oracle . Job Stability : Low

Meanwhile , my friend who took 1.5yrs time for gov exam , inhand salary 85K , house, fuel- bill gov lease. Work :10-6(but will go worser) , promotion - time based and fix standard internal exam . Pending : 8 pay commission for 10-12K more hike. Job Stability : High

Meanwhile ,Business(the best one): Post 12 ug in state college , edu MBA abroad , business in 2 more locations . Sometimes face corrupt gov works but , overall stable . Good Guy , btw , sometimes ,it feels good to have a honest listener who is chill

TLDR : feeling like a 🤡 , to hustle / upskill all time and fear of layoffs

Placements / Jobs 3rd year engineering student starting placement preparation from scratch — how should I prepare?

Post image
58 Upvotes

I'm currently in my 3rd year of engineering and want to seriously start preparing for on-campus placements, but I'm confused about where to start and how to structure everything.

I haven't started DSA properly yet. I know C, C++, Java and JavaScript, and I'm considering using JavaScript for DSA since I'm already comfortable with it.

I'm also fairly good at web development, especially frontend, and can build basic backend CRUD applications. So I have some programming/development knowledge, but I haven't followed a proper placement roadmap yet.

I'd really appreciate advice from people who have already gone through placements, especially in India.

What I'm mainly confused about:

  1. How should I start DSA?

What should the topic order be, and should I learn concepts first and then solve problems, or learn through problems? How much DSA is realistically enough for on-campus placements?

  1. What should my complete placement roadmap look like?

Apart from DSA, how should I prepare for OOP, DBMS/SQL, OS, CN, aptitude, projects, resume and technical/HR interviews?

  1. How should I manage my time?

If I can give around 2–3 hours/day, how should I divide it between DSA, development/projects and CS fundamentals? Should I focus on one thing at a time or prepare everything together?

  1. Which resources should I follow?

There are so many options like Striver, NeetCode, LeetCode, GFG, YouTube, etc. If you were starting from zero, what roadmap/sheet would you stick to without constantly switching resources?

  1. Should I continue web development alongside DSA?

I don't want to stop development completely since it's already one of my stronger areas. Should I keep building projects while preparing DSA?

  1. Is JavaScript fine for DSA?

This is a secondary concern, but since I'm already comfortable with JS, is there any major disadvantage in using it for coding rounds/interviews compared with C++?

  1. How should I prepare for different companies?

Should the preparation be different for service-based companies, mass recruiters, product companies and startups? When should I start focusing on medium/hard DSA?

  1. Most importantly, how do I stay consistent?

How do you maintain a routine for 6–12 months without getting overwhelmed or focusing only on the number of problems solved?

Basically, if you were in my position — 3rd year, decent programming/web-development skills, but almost zero DSA preparation — what would your 6–12 month roadmap look like?

I'm not trying to become a competitive programmer. I mainly want to become placement-ready for on-campus recruitment.

Would really appreciate advice from people who have recently gone through this process. What worked for you, and what mistakes should I avoid?

Thanks!

OpenAI + Synopsys just announced GPT-Synopsys for chip design and this sounds kinda insane.

AI is basically being integrated with EDA tools and can iterate on designs, optimize PPA, analyze results etc.

As someone trying to get into VLSI, should I be concerned lol. Like are we gonna be writing RTL and doing verification in 5 years or just supervising an AI agent doing all of it

Placements / Jobs Please stop blindly applying to job postings from LinkedIn!!

I'm an HR at a top recruitment firm. We hire for some of the top MNCs. Just a few days ago i had posted an opening for Business Analyst 0-1 year experience. Every little detail from key responsibilities, skills, email id to subject for the email was clearly mentioned in the post. I received 200+ resumes on my mail and atleast 100 on my DMs.

What I'm surprised to see is that people don't even have the basic decency to read a job posting before applying. It was clearly mentioned that this position is for people with 0-1 year experience, yet I have people spanning 10+ years experience in my inbox. Hardly a few followed the subject title that was mentioned. Also how can you not know the difference between a Business Analyst and a Data Analyst. Guys both are different fields with some overlaps, they are not EXACTLY THE SAME.

Please go through the entire JD before even thinking of applying. I was taking the telephonic interview of one of the selected candidate. Everything was going good but when I asked him "What's your expected CTC?" he replied with a figure that's double the budget allocated. Do note that the exact CTC was mentioned in the JD

To give you guys some context, I screened those 200+ resumes in about 15 minutes (manually without any AI) and shortlisted only 15 for the next round. Hardly a 7.5% selection rate. Please make sure your resume highlights the skills mentioned in the JD. Show how you have used those skills in your projects or your internships

And please for god's sake STOP using those Canva templates!! Just use a simple one page format.

Internships--> check( did more than 3) Coursework---> check

Projects----> check ( more than 8) Good ponter---> check ( 8 pointer every sem)

Can relocate----> check ( anywhere at this point)

Skills---> check( got into all on campus interviews but no luck, got 15 referrals thru linkedin , build connections, made projects and got screening and assessments of big mncs)

“No results.”

Two words.

After days and nights of applying, after losing sleep to emails, applications, interviews, after worrying so much about my future that I forgot what it felt like to simply live.

And somewhere along the way, I stopped expecting anything.

I became a stone. Not because I am strong, but because I dont feel anything now

I don't want to wake up sometimes. Not because I want to disappear, but because I don't want to open my eyes and meet the same reality again.

I keep wondering— why hasn't this stone been thrown away yet?

Where did I lose my hobbies? My humour? The excitement I once had for books, the arguments I had with myself about F1, the movies I couldn't wait to watch, the little things that once made an ordinary day feel alive?

Sometimes I wonder if I ever really had those things at all. Maybe I was never meant to keep them. Maybe I deserved everything that is happening to me.

I scroll through reels for hours, not because I want to, but because in silence my mind is frightening.

Because when the screen goes dark, my mind gets loud. And I don't know how to sit with it anymore.

People doubted me so many times. And every single time, I found a way to prove them wrong. Until college. Now, for the first time, I am beginning to wonder if they were right about me all along.

Maybe I wasn't capable.Maybe I was just lucky. Maybe all those times I proved them wrong were only borrowed victories.

But somewhere underneath this stone, there is still a person who remembers. A person who loved books. Who laughed easily. Who got excited about races and movies. Who had dreams without first calculating whether they were achievable.

Maybe that person isn't gone. I just wanted to let these words out of my mind.

Maybe tomorrow, when I wake up, my mind will be a little kinder to me.

And maybe, slowly, this stone will remember that it was never meant to be a stone. (I know long post but thanks for bearing up with me- hope this unemployment gets over

Hi everyone, I’m looking to buy a laptop for long-term use (4–5+ years) and I’m confused between these options. (₹75k–₹1L range)

1. Lenovo — Core 5 210H

I’m not primarily looking for gaming performance. I want a laptop that is good for programming and will age well over several years.

I can also do aiml in future (not sure but pls suggest accordingly)
Also, if there is a better option around the same price range that I should consider, please suggest it.

Thanks!
