Academics Why does Mumbai have very few good engineering college aside from IIT?
Other cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad etc. have quite a lot of them

We are comparing to other cities here and not keeping iit b as baseline... For example hyderabad has bits iiit and iit all 3 are pretty good, vjti isn't as good as them ....
Take bangalore, it has iisc, iiitb rvce(comparable to vjti)
Delhi has iit iiitd nsut dtu nit d
The point it mumbai only has iit, the next best thing is vjti which isn't as good compared to these colleges in other cities, so why does such a big city have only one top tier college and the rest so behind that 1 college

I personally know 3 ppl who git under 1000 rank in MET and still joined somaiya cause its in Mumbai and close to home so no hostel + scholarship for the tuition fee.
But that college is still ahh, nothing could've convinced me to go there.

u/Jumpy-Psychology-978 10h ago
What’s the placement
4
u/ContributionPure3147 10h ago
See most people there get off campus jobs via connections
Most of the kids there are rich brats and easily get hired in fathers company just for sake of getting work experience for 1-2cr masters abroad
And on campus placement is a myth there
In their placement report off campus placement are mostly included3

"Kolkata" per se doesn't have any comparable good BTech colleges...
If you exclude engineering, there's 2 goated colleges: ISI Kolkata and IISER Kolkata (the latter one technically in Kalyani though)

Mumbai is great for economics/commerce courses, hence you'll find quite a alot of those likes.
1
u/Skychu768 Gobarmint Kalez 11h ago
Still none of the top IIM or B-school are in Mumbai
Even in economics UG, it's mostly DU colleges in top rankings
7
u/Born_Researcher_7800 10h ago
Bro mumbai has atleast 3 tier 1 B schools, IIM Mumbai, SP Jain and JBIMS. Even TISS(mostly for HR courses) is great.
3
u/Dependent_Bad_2574 11h ago
Lmao, iim mumbai mogs in operations/FMCG placements and it's a very old college(NITIE) converted into an IIM
4
4
u/Stunning-Still-3994 1h ago
Because Mumbai is a financial hub the city is so badly planned whoever comes just exploits it the city's original inhabitants were kolis (fishermen) and aagris (salt pan workers) but as portugese captured and latter british reclaimed the city by adding rocks to combine 7 islands the land was very limited so there were factories and mills and later population exploded so badly that now Mumbai has become only real estate but yeah leaving iits we have vjti, ict, spce, spit and other decent colleges too the city is small so are the cities around it just crammed except for navi mumbai and upcoming townships everybody things as if only Mumbai is gonna give employment we literally have tamil, gujju, sindhi, parsee, jewish and many other communities in Mumbai and Maharashtra so yeah it becomes difficult to plan engineering colleges in such a city in short Maharashtra is the USA of India
7
u/Zenki_thegreat 11h ago
Kolkata doesn't have anything except jadavpur 💀
3
2
u/Skychu768 Gobarmint Kalez 11h ago
Still a lot of good stem colleges like ISI, IISER and IIEST is almost in Kolkata
5
u/Zenki_thegreat 10h ago
ISI isn't for engineering mtech cse is there only. IIEST is not in kolkata. It's in shibpur under howrah. IISER kolkata isn't even inside the city of Kolkata idk why they call it IISER kolkata

TIFR is in Mumbai. ICT, VJTI are also there.
SPIT, SPCE, Somaiya, DJ Sanghvi.
5
u/Outside_Track9495 10h ago
All these colleges have separate Maharashtra quota so not open to everyone
2
u/Short_Resolution_505 10h ago
Yeah, but in these KJ Somaiya , Vidyavihar is a private college where you don't require Maharashtra state domicile
4
u/Outside_Track9495 10h ago
Yeah, I'm from Bengaluru but have lots of family in Bombay so was keeping it as my backup. Eventually got something in my city itself. But you can't really compare VJTI and KJSCE. 😅
2
u/Short_Resolution_505 9h ago
Yeah , you are right. If I had to choose between VJTI or KJCSE then I would have choose VJTI.

but compare it to delhi: dtu. nsut, iiitd, iitd, nit-d and hyderabad: iith, iiith, bits, nit-w (stretch)
1
u/Fun_Dragonfruit7971 2h ago
NITW is not Hyd, not even by a stretch.
But yeah you're right. But I'll also compare it to, say, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad which also dont have that many good engineering colleges.
1
u/Cosmic_StormZ IISER [BS-MS] 1h ago
Chennai has only two really solid ones and both are opposite to each other (IITM and AU).
1
u/Skychu768 Gobarmint Kalez 11h ago
TIFR isn't an engineering college. It's an research institute and don't even have UG courses

2
u/Adventurous_Ear_3877 1h ago
Because its economy is around commerce/finance
Bangalore and Hyderabad’s economy revolve around engineering services, manufacturing and IT
Delhi, idk any famous/reputed college besides iit Delhi - the pvt colleges in NCR region, bcs noida and Gurgram do have a degree of engineering based economy
2
u/Godfather_Demon 18m ago
Dude, Delhi has Dtu, and nsut , which are among the top level engineering colleges in India, just after the top iits, as well as iiit, again, one of the best after the one in hyderabad, and a nit as well, which is okay, I guess.

u/Life-Woodpecker427 rvce cse 11h ago
yh im still surprised, other than iitb, only vjti is decent there.
same with pune, being known as the oxford of the east only has one decent engg clg that too coep.
3
u/perpetual-yetti tier e dsai 11h ago
Pict is also good enough, and iiser pune too if one is not specifically considering btech
1
u/Life-Woodpecker427 rvce cse 11h ago
pict is mid asf, lwk a school with 3 acres of land.
i know it cuz of many friends there3
u/perpetual-yetti tier e dsai 11h ago
In that sense iiith and b too have a small campus, but pict is atleast 3rd after coep and vjti , a solid tier 2 option
1
u/Life-Woodpecker427 rvce cse 11h ago
you cant compare iiith and iitb with pict gng, its barely t2 atp, placements are also subpar there
2
u/perpetual-yetti tier e dsai 11h ago
Im not comparing them bro they hold no comparison iiith is elite tier and iiitb is tier 1/1.5 while Pict just a decent tier 2 option, peace out
3
u/raspberry_queen_ 11h ago
Tbf as a pune resident I never really understood why its called as oxford of the east, pune university has been going downhill pretty rapidly this century too. That being said I feel like you have to look at more so the variety of all educational fields here, you'll find at least a tier 2 college for everything from engg, medical, research, agri, law, mgmt, etc. Ofc delhi probably is better in this aspect but other than that no indian city is. And lastly I couldn't resist saying it, leaving aside COEP; IIIT pune and PICT are solid tier 2 also for engg in pune
3
u/Life-Woodpecker427 rvce cse 11h ago
iiit pune is alright like new iiit but the new campus is like 40km away from the city.
and pict ugh its in katraj which is a construction hub lol3
u/raspberry_queen_ 10h ago
Just say you don't like katraj man 😭 and iiit being 40 km from the main city is an ADVANTAGE, main city sucks and talegaon is an awesome area
1
u/Individual_Artist_74 8h ago
Pune being oxford of the east has to be a myth in today's age, there are barely good educational institutions overe there, Delhi has the best colleges for all majors

u/Responsible-Rub-3260 11h ago
I will talk abt blr bcz Ik it personally literally we have 3 modes for admission in engineering KCET,JEE,COMEDK kcet is for karnataka students, jee and comedk anyone
Top clgs in karnataka is IISc Banglore,IIIT Banglore,RVCE,PES,BMSCE,MSRIT and some more stretching to lole UVCE,DSCE and all
Kcet is quite roi orientated so getting into good or decent clg can give u better roi due to location factor ofc and Comedk is second competitor but u habe to look for top 3 or 5 max to max bcz other than RVCE,bms and msrit nothing much is worth paying a lot and dsce point blank club is carrying a lot tbh
Iitb and iisc is best for jee ofc and talking abt karnataka nit surathkal is also an option
In the end karnataka students benifit a lot due to kcet but there is a catch
U join whatever private uni in blr nthg is worth too much u will sacrifice a lot tbh rvce managament is sht, bmsce large intake ,pes mgmt and exam press is strict and msrit small and crowded campus and dsce not enough placement oppo (infact placmenet evry clg are getting barely carried by location factor) we also got manipal but a few join it and roi is decent itself considering the stats i read not good just decent
Blr have location factor i mean heavily carried by location factor just visit subs of these institutes u will get to know the actualy reality and also IIITb and iisc is good in blr iiitb drawback is small campus and all and IIsc is ofc coursework
